Anthropological Reflections On Tattoos Amongst Punk Women, Megan A. O'Shea Jan 2009

Anthropological Reflections On Tattoos Amongst Punk Women, Megan A. O'Shea

HIM 1990-2015

The relationship between identity and tattooing regarding female members of the punk community has not been fully explored by the academic community. Through the exploration of the anthropological history of tattoos as markers of identity, the pro-social aspects of this form of body modification can be illustrated. Placing emphasis on punk women, tattoos are shown to positively affect individual identity and reinforce social bonds. The pioneering nature of punk music and the outright rejection of cultural norms creates an atmosphere in which women can more adequately express their identity through the use of body modification. In this open environment where …

The Role Of Transactive Memory In Work Teams : A Review, Megan E. Gregory Jan 2009

The Role Of Transactive Memory In Work Teams : A Review, Megan E. Gregory

HIM 1990-2015

Transactive memory, the transmission and use of knowledge between two or more people, is an important construct to consider when studying work teams. This thesis reviews the literature on transactive memory systems (TMS) in order to summarize what is currently known about TMS and to identify gaps in the literature in need of further investigation. Past TMS research is reviewed according to the operational definitions, antecedents, team processes, outcomes, team performance, and boundary conditions. TMS is most frequently operationalized using Lewis' (2003) TMS scale. Research has focused on three types of antecedents: Communication, Team Characteristics, and Facilitation of TMS. Two …

Multiple Minority Identities : Queer And Muslim Arab Americans, Timothy A. Duvall Brown Jan 2009

Multiple Minority Identities : Queer And Muslim Arab Americans, Timothy A. Duvall Brown

HIM 1990-2015

People who are Queer Muslim Arab Americans have unique experiences, as their multiple identities often clash head-on with cultural expectations of their respective communities. To fully grasp the concept of someone who identifies as such, this thesis explores each minority identity individually, and then examines the interactions of all three identities. The Double Jeopardy and Intersectional Invisibility theories of multiple minority identities are explored in relation to people who are Queer Muslim Arab Americans. Scenarios are outlined in which each theory seems more relevant. Finally, community needs of Queer Muslim Arab Americans are discussed, with a focus on the opportunities …

Numerical Solution Of The Two-Phase Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations Using A Gpu-Accelerated Meshless Method, Jesse Kelly Jan 2009

Numerical Solution Of The Two-Phase Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations Using A Gpu-Accelerated Meshless Method, Jesse Kelly

HIM 1990-2015

This project presents the development and implementation of a GPU-accelerated meshless two-phase incompressible fluid flow solver. The solver uses a variant of the Generalized Finite Difference Meshless Method presented by Gerace et al. [1]. The Level Set Method [2] is used for capturing the fluid interface. The Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) language for general-purpose computing on the graphics-processing-unit is used to implement the GPU-accelerated portions of the solver. CUDA allows the programmer to take advantage of the massive parallelism offered by the GPU at a cost that is significantly lower than other parallel computing options. Through the combined use …

Critical Success Factors In Florida's Bed And Breakfast Industry, Catherine I. Rash Jan 2009

Critical Success Factors In Florida's Bed And Breakfast Industry, Catherine I. Rash

HIM 1990-2015

Florida bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) were surveyed for the purpose of discovering the attitudes, beliefs, and actual behaviors of B&B owners and operators that contribute to an operation’s success. This study had several objectives: 1) to provide an analysis of attitudes and beliefs perceived to be necessary for success and the actual behaviors exhibited by operators based upon their self-definition of success, 2) to collect demographic information from various bed and breakfasts in Florida, and 3) to expand the limited amount of research that has addressed issues in the bed and breakfast industry. Between July 2009 and August 2009, data …
