Crashes In The Vicinity Of Major Crossroads, Charles G. Allen Nov 2008

Crashes In The Vicinity Of Major Crossroads, Charles G. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Major crossroads are designed to facilitate the conflicting movements of numerous vehicles in a manner that is both safe and efficient. Accesses located within the functional areas of major crossroads add complication to intersection activity due to additional conflicts arising from ingressing and egressing movements at the accesses. In this research, the impact of accesses on crashes within major crossroad functional areas was analyzed. Specifically, the effects of access spacing within functional areas and access setback from intersections were addressed. In order to conduct the analysis, the functional areas of 159 signalized major arterial crossroads across the state of Utah …

"Getting Better" After Torture From The Perspective Of The Survivor, Brian Louis Isakson Jul 2008

"Getting Better" After Torture From The Perspective Of The Survivor, Brian Louis Isakson

Psychology Dissertations

The traditional model of Western mental health treatment for survivors of torture has focused mainly on posttraumatic stress disorder and related conditions. This model is symptoms-focused in which the goal is to reduce pathology. In this model, the mental health professional is the expert and the survivors learn from the professionals. Using grounded theory methodology, the current study seeks to expand the understanding for treatment of torture survivors by investigating, from the perspective of the torture survivors, the process of “getting better” after torture. By asking the survivors to explain this process, this study broadens the focus of areas of …

The Development And Validation Of The Perceived Workplace Civility Climate Scale, Raymond Charles Ottinot Jul 2008

The Development And Validation Of The Perceived Workplace Civility Climate Scale, Raymond Charles Ottinot

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study was to extend the concept of safety climate into the aggression research domain. In order to address this goal I developed and validated the perceived workplace civility climate scale (PWCC), which assesses the extent to which employees perceive the importance an organization places upon managing and preventing acts of incivility and verbally aggressive actions in the workplace. The factor analytic results produced three factors: (1) Intolerance, (2) Response, and (3) Policies and Procedures. All dimensions demonstrated adequate reliability and correlated significantly to hypothesized stressors and strains. Lastly, correlation results (i.e., convergence) between self- and peer …

Campus Coalition Against Sexual Assault (Ccasa), Morgan Levell Jan 2008

Campus Coalition Against Sexual Assault (Ccasa), Morgan Levell

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone project is designed to increase the knowledge of students living in CSU Monterey Bay's residential housing facilities regarding issues of rape, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Prevention education and information will be provided by the five community organizations that work closely with survivors of sexual assault, rape, stalking, and dating violence with the hope of raising campus awareness around said issues.

Neutron Cross-Section Sensitivity Studies In Higher Actinides For Criticality Safety In Reprocessing, Lawrence J Lakeotes Jan 2008

Neutron Cross-Section Sensitivity Studies In Higher Actinides For Criticality Safety In Reprocessing, Lawrence J Lakeotes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During reprocessing, the spent fuel rod can be divided up into its component parts for separation into different waste streams. These radioactive streams are then directed appropriately toward low-level waste (LLW) storage, high-level waste (HLW) storage, or reuse into a recycled fuel pin. [1]; The issue that requires evaluation is the nuclear reaction of the higher actinides in reprocessing in an aqueous solution with regard to small temperature changes. This will need an analysis of neutron cross section, which is the measure of the probability that a nuclear reaction will occur; The isotopes' cross sections need to be temperature corrected. …

Development Of A Gis-Based Safety Analysis System, Vidhya Kumaresan Jan 2008

Development Of A Gis-Based Safety Analysis System, Vidhya Kumaresan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this study is to develop a safety analysis system that integrates crash data and roadway related information. This system is developed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. It includes customized user interfaces to support queries to analyze data and to display results either in graphical or tabular formats. The system also affords the capabilities to export such results. The system permits analyses to be performed either at individual locations such as intersections, or for roadway segments. These analyses are based on data fields included in the crash database. The queries may be based on individual attributes …

Exploratory Study Of Construction Safety Culture Through Systems Thinking, Charles J. Jr Benford Jan 2008

Exploratory Study Of Construction Safety Culture Through Systems Thinking, Charles J. Jr Benford

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since its conception, in 1986 after the Chernobyl accident, the term "safety culture" has gained major popularity throughout many systems, especially the construction industry. Although this concept has gained much popularity over the course of two decades, it remains a heavily debated topic between advocates and skeptics for various reasons. Much of the skepticism is due to the failure of proponents of the concept to clearly define and provide an understanding of those factors that comprise what "safety culture" is, and how it can be achieved. A system (particularly a construction system) that possesses a safety culture is one in …

Characteristics Of Red Light Running Crashesin Florida, Dina Elnashar Jan 2008

Characteristics Of Red Light Running Crashesin Florida, Dina Elnashar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Red light running is one of the main contributing factors of crashes in urban areas in Florida and the United States. Nationwide, according to preliminary estimates by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) 2001, there were nearly 218,000 red-light running crashes at intersections. These crashes resulted in as many as 181,000 injuries and 880 fatalities, and an economic loss estimated at $14 billion per year nationwide, According to the Community Traffic Safety Team Florida Coalition (A statewide traffic safety group) there were 9,348 crashes involving red-light running in Florida and 127 fatalities in 1999. This research study focused on studying the …

Factors Affecting Young Driver Safety In The State Of Louisiana, Cherian Cherian-Korah Jan 2008

Factors Affecting Young Driver Safety In The State Of Louisiana, Cherian Cherian-Korah

LSU Master's Theses

Though teenage drivers constitute only 6.4 percent of the total drivers in United States, they are responsible for 14 percent of the fatal crashes and are involved in 18 percent of all police-reported crashes in the country. One of the main causes of teenage crashes was found to be the presence of passengers in the vehicle. This study is focused on the effect of passengers on young drivers in the state of Louisiana. There have been efforts from traffic safety departments to contain crashes involving this age group of drivers and, particularly the Graduated Driver's License Law, which imposes restrictions …
