Designing An International Friendship Model For Children, Charlotte Martins Dec 2008

Designing An International Friendship Model For Children, Charlotte Martins

Theses and Graduate Projects

In 2006 this writer traveled to Windhoek, Namibia to take the course Walking the Truth; Culture, Gender and HIV/AID,S in Sub-Saharan Africa. As part of that class each student was assigned to work with an organization or individual whose mission was working with HIV/AIDS patients or there families. It was from this experience that the project was born. The purpose of this project is to design a friendship model that links children of middle school age from different cultures and different nations together through letter writing.

Examination Of The Association Between Discussion Of Hiv Status And High-Risk Sexual Behaviors Of Msm In Atlanta, Auntre' Dojuan Hamp Nov 2008

Examination Of The Association Between Discussion Of Hiv Status And High-Risk Sexual Behaviors Of Msm In Atlanta, Auntre' Dojuan Hamp

Public Health Theses

As the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States nears the end of its third decade, stakeholders have begun to sift through the previous experiences in prevention in order to assess progress as well as plan the next steps in this fight. The purpose of this study is aimed at understanding the factors which may affect unprotected intercourse. It is hypothesized that for men who have sex with men (MSM) there is an association between having a discussion about their HIV status and high-risk sexual behaviors. A secondary analysis was conducted using data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) System. …

Regulators Of G-Protein Signaling, Rgs13 And Rgs16, Are Associated With Cxcl12-Mediated Cd4+ T Cell Migration, Lijin Xia Aug 2008

Regulators Of G-Protein Signaling, Rgs13 And Rgs16, Are Associated With Cxcl12-Mediated Cd4+ T Cell Migration, Lijin Xia

Theses and Dissertations

Chemokines are important chemical signals that guide lymphocyte movement within the immune system and promote the organization and functions of germinal centers (GCs) in the secondary lymphoid tissues. Previous studies have shown that GC T cells exhibit high expression of chemokine receptor 4, CXCR4, but that these cells are unable to migrate to the ligand for this receptor, the chemokine CXCL12. This “migratory paralysis” to CXCL12 was found to be correlated with the expression of two Regulators of G-protein Signaling, RGS13 and RGS16 in the GC T cells. The objective of my research was to determine whether RGS13 and RGS16 …

Hiv/Aids Relative Survival And Mean Residual Life Analysis, Xinjian Zhang Aug 2008

Hiv/Aids Relative Survival And Mean Residual Life Analysis, Xinjian Zhang

Mathematics Theses

HIV/Aids Relative Survival and Mean Residual Life Analysis BY XINJIAN ZHANG Under the Direction of Gengsheng (Jeff) Qin and Ruiguang (Rick) Song ABSTRACT Generalized linear models with Poisson error were applied to investigate HIV/AIDS relative survival. Relative excess risk for death within 3 years after HIV/AIDS diagnosis was significantly higher for non-Hispanic blacks, American Indians and Hispanics compared with Whites. Excess hazard for death was also higher in men injection drug users compared with men who have sex with men (MSM). The relative excess hazard of old HIV/AIDS patients is significantly higher compared with younger patients. When CD4 increased, the …

Structure And Energetics Of Rna - Protein Interactions For Hiv Rreiib Targeting Zinc Finger Proteins., Subrata H. Mishra Jul 2008

Structure And Energetics Of Rna - Protein Interactions For Hiv Rreiib Targeting Zinc Finger Proteins., Subrata H. Mishra

Chemistry Dissertations

RNA - protein interactions constitute a vital part of numerous biochemical processes. In the HIV life cycle, the interaction of the viral protein Rev and the Rev Responsive Element (RRE), a part of unspliced HIV RNA, is crucial for the propagation of infectious virions. Intervention of this interaction disrupts the viral life cycle. Rev - RRE interaction initially occurs at a high affinity binding site localized to a relatively small stem loop structure called RREIIB. This binding event has been well characterized by a variety of biochemical, enzymatic and structural studies. Our collaborators have previously demonstrated the efficacy of zinc …

Effects Of Probiotics On Type 2 T Helper Skewed Immune Disorders; Including Allergic Rhinitis And Infection With Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Tara Elizabeth Koyama Jan 2008

Effects Of Probiotics On Type 2 T Helper Skewed Immune Disorders; Including Allergic Rhinitis And Infection With Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Tara Elizabeth Koyama

Digitized Theses

The aims of this thesis were to select probiotic bacteria with potential to confer anti-allergy effects, develop a food formulation to deliver the strains, then test the concept in humans. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Bifidobacterium adolescentis 7007-05 were selected and successfully incorporated into yogurt. A total of 95 subjects participated in three studies. Immunoglobulin, cytokine and chemokines proved to be poor markers for allergy. Subjects who consumed probiotic yogurt for two months during grass pollen season tended to have improvements in their symptoms and signs of allergy. This was not found during a similar study in the ragweed pollen season …

A Descriptive Study Of Native Americans Participation In Hiv Testing In Montana, Carrie Strike Jan 2008

A Descriptive Study Of Native Americans Participation In Hiv Testing In Montana, Carrie Strike

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Since reporting first began in Montana in 1985 there have been few, if any, significant changes in regard to HIV/AIDS case rates as well as the demographic characteristics and risk behaviors of Native Americans infected with HIV/AIDS. The fact HIV/AIDS does not appear to have had a disproportionate impact on Montana’s American Indian population at the present time is somewhat surprising given other markers of potential HIV risk, such as the increase in both teen pregnancies and other sexually transmitted disease rates like Hepatitis C, suggest an increased level of risk among American Indians when compared to non-Indian populations. Epidemiologic …
