The Role Of Chemical Senses In Predation, Risk Assessment, And Social Behavior Of Spiny Lobsters, Shkelzen Shabani
The Role Of Chemical Senses In Predation, Risk Assessment, And Social Behavior Of Spiny Lobsters, Shkelzen Shabani
Biology Dissertations
Chemical senses play a critical role in predator-prey and social interactions of many animals. Predators often evoke adaptive escape responses by prey, one of which is the release of chemicals that induce adaptive avoidance behaviors from both predators and conspecifics. I explore the use of chemicals in predator-prey and social interactions, using a crustacean model system, the spiny lobster. As predators, spiny lobsters are opportunistic, polyphagous feeders, and they rely heavily on their chemical senses during feeding. Some of their potential prey deter attacks through chemical defenses that act through the spiny lobsters’ chemical senses. An example of this is …
"Getting Better" After Torture From The Perspective Of The Survivor, Brian Louis Isakson
"Getting Better" After Torture From The Perspective Of The Survivor, Brian Louis Isakson
Psychology Dissertations
The traditional model of Western mental health treatment for survivors of torture has focused mainly on posttraumatic stress disorder and related conditions. This model is symptoms-focused in which the goal is to reduce pathology. In this model, the mental health professional is the expert and the survivors learn from the professionals. Using grounded theory methodology, the current study seeks to expand the understanding for treatment of torture survivors by investigating, from the perspective of the torture survivors, the process of “getting better” after torture. By asking the survivors to explain this process, this study broadens the focus of areas of …
The Influence Of Humor On Approach And Avoidance Motivation, Stuart Jenkins Daman
The Influence Of Humor On Approach And Avoidance Motivation, Stuart Jenkins Daman
ETD Archive
Approach and avoidance motivation have been used to study many phenomena, but no research has yet investigated the influence of humor on approach and avoidance motivation. The feelings associated with humor are also associated with situations high in safety and low in threat. These sorts of situations are likely to result in decreases in avoidance motivation. Participants viewed either a humorous video clip or a mundane video clip and then completed a series of self-report measures to assess levels of approach and avoidance motivation. Contrary to expectations, composites of measures of approach and avoidance motivation were not influenced by the …
