A Comparison Of Student Characteristics In Traditional And Web-Based College Science Courses, Meghan Andrikanich Jan 2008

A Comparison Of Student Characteristics In Traditional And Web-Based College Science Courses, Meghan Andrikanich

ETD Archive

Distance learning options at colleges and universities are increasing dramatically (e.g. National Center for Educational Statistics [NCES], 1998 NCES, 2001). Web-based courses create an interesting learning environment for study (e. g., Dupin-Bryant, 2004 Maki and Maki, 2003). Because science is a topic that induces anxiety for many students (e. g., Brownlow, et al., 2000 Greenburg and Mallow, 1982), and test anxiety has been linked to reduced academic performance (e. g., Bruch, 1981 Spielberger, 1979), the intersection of course format, science, and test anxiety is an area in need of research. Quantitative results found no significant difference between age, racial/ethnic background, …

Policy Administration And Political Rights; The Experiences Of High-Level Women In The Kuwaiti Government, Hani A. Alsarraf

ETD Archive

Women in Kuwait were traditionally excluded from the formulation of public policy because they lacked political rights. In mid 2005, women received the right to vote and to run for office. There is little known today about the influence of these political rights on women who work with the implementation of public policies in the higher administrative levels of government. Little is known specifically about the influence of the franchise on promotion of women to high administrative posts. The purpose of this study is to lay a foundation for research on the factors that encourage women's access to high positions …

Rotor Position And Vibration Control For Aerospace Flywheel Energy Storage Devices And Other Vibration Based Devices, B. X. S. Alexander Jan 2008

Rotor Position And Vibration Control For Aerospace Flywheel Energy Storage Devices And Other Vibration Based Devices, B. X. S. Alexander

ETD Archive

Flywheel energy storage has distinct advantages over conventional energy storage methods such as electrochemical batteries. Because the energy density of a flywheel rotor increases quadratically with its speed, the foremost goal in flywheel design is to achieve sustainable high speeds of the rotor. Many issues exist with the flywheel rotor operation at high and varying speeds. A prominent problem is synchronous rotor vibration, which can drastically limit the sustainable rotor speed. In a set of projects, the novel Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) is applied to various problems of flywheel rotor operation. These applications include rotor levitation, steady state rotation …

Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Environmental Contaminants, Protein Structure And Expression, Ian E. Atkinson

ETD Archive

There are a wide array of sciences at our disposal to further our understanding of the roles of toxins in the environment and their effects on living organisms. Of these disciplines, the field of mass spectrometry offers a powerful analytical means to identify compounds in varying and complex sample media. The presence of altered expressions of biomolecules upon exposure to toxins, the effects that these toxins may have on biomolecule structure and the identity of toxins in the sample all can be determined by mass spectrometry. In this study mass spectrometric analysis has been applied to environmental toxicological problems. First, …

Characterization Of Changes In Hyaluronan Following Epidermal Barrier Injury In An Organotypic Model, Gati Ajani Jan 2008

Characterization Of Changes In Hyaluronan Following Epidermal Barrier Injury In An Organotypic Model, Gati Ajani

ETD Archive

The stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis of skin, provides a functional permeability barrier that is essential for our survival and must be rapidly repaired after injury. Of interest to us, a ubiquitous matrix molecule called hyaluronan (HA) has come to the forefront in wound healing research because it is induced after epidermal injury and may be crucial for barrier repair. This thesis examines the role of HA during recovery from the most fundamental form of skin injury, i.e. selective damage to the stratum corneum. The overall question is whether this form of stratum corneum injury can lead …

Occupations, A Diaspora, And The Design Of Local Governments For A Palestinian State, Wasim Al-Habil Jan 2008

Occupations, A Diaspora, And The Design Of Local Governments For A Palestinian State, Wasim Al-Habil

ETD Archive

The forces that shape administrative structures include the goals and objectives of minority and majority groups, modern management principles, and a legacy or history in which domestic political factions have gradually accepted rules and roles for mutual tolerance and inclusion. However, this process can be muted or redefined in societies where centuries of occupation and dispersion "short-circuit" maturation processes and introduce non-indigenous systems externally imposed without any level of popular acceptance or active citizenship participation. In these environments, as new states emerge, their task of building local government institutions requires a clear understanding of indigenous systems and institutions. What must …

Culture And Subcultures In The Domestic Auto Industry; An Emic, Ethnographic And Critical Theory Application, George M. Amolsch Jan 2008

Culture And Subcultures In The Domestic Auto Industry; An Emic, Ethnographic And Critical Theory Application, George M. Amolsch

ETD Archive

The domestic auto industry in the United States is struggling for survival. A steady loss of market share to foreign competitors resulted in the industry reevaluating their business and labor practices that have proven so successful over the years. The problem is that little research has been conducted regarding the impact that the interrelationship between separate management, union, and work force subcultures are having on the reorganization of the domestic auto industry. The purpose of this research was to examine the impact the past and present business and labor practices have had on the domestic automobile industry from the perspective …

Role Of Transcription Factor Mef2a In Development Of Coronary Artery Disease (Cad) And Myocardial Infarction (Mi), Maniragava Sai Bhagavatula

ETD Archive

Coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction (MI) are the leading cause of death in developed countries. Genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of CAD and MI. The revolutionary advances in molecular genetics have provided new insights into the genetic pathways involved in this disease. Recently, our laboratory used linkage analysis to map the first disease-causing gene for CAD and MI to chromosome 15q26 in a large family and subsequently mutation analysis identified a 7-amio acid deletion in MEF2A, a gene encoding a transcription factor. Later we identified three novel mutations N263S, P279L, G283D in four other …

New Insights Into Molecular Mechanisms Of Fludarabine, Alina D. Bulgar Jan 2008

New Insights Into Molecular Mechanisms Of Fludarabine, Alina D. Bulgar

ETD Archive

Nucleotide analogs (e.g. fludarabine) are antimetabolites used in the treatment of a wide variety of hematological malignancies and solid tumors. Upon being metabolized to their active triphosphate form, these agents are incorporated into DNA. Among other molecular targets, their incorporation may lead to activation of base excision repair (BER) pathway. The molecular mechanism of BER recognition and repair of the incorporated fludarabine has not yet been elucidated. The main focus of this research was to study the involvement of BER pathway in the response to fludarabine induced DNA damage. Also, the possibility of enhancing antineoplastic activity of fludarabine by inhibition …

Factor Va Directs Catalysis By Factor Xa During Prothrombin Activation, Michael Anthony Bukys Jan 2008

Factor Va Directs Catalysis By Factor Xa During Prothrombin Activation, Michael Anthony Bukys

ETD Archive

Hemostasis occurs through the controlled activation and inactivation of clotting factors resulting in the arrest of bleeding without blockage to the vasculature, while thrombosis is the undesired formation of vascular blood clots, which adversely affects millions of people annually. Clotting factors circulate in blood as inactive zymogens, which are proteolytically activated in response to vascular injury, assembled into enzymatic complexes and in turn activate additional coagulation factors culminating in the production of thrombin from the enzymatic complex prothrombinase. The prothrombinase complex is composed of the activated enzymatic component factor Xa (fXa) complexed to the activated cofactor portion factor Va (fVa) …

Phylogeography Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) And Comparative Myology Of The Black Bass (Micropterus, Centrarchidae), William Calvin Borden Jan 2008

Phylogeography Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) And Comparative Myology Of The Black Bass (Micropterus, Centrarchidae), William Calvin Borden

ETD Archive

Biogeographic patterns were investigated within a single species and among its congenerics. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) were characterized by portions of the cytochrome b gene and the control region although bass in Lake Erie were also evaluated using eight nDNA microsatellites. Overall, little population structure was observed among sites in Lake Erie which was surprising given that most male smallmouth bass exhibit nest site fidelity. But, these lake bass were divergent from bass residing in nearby tributaries indicating that lacustrine bass are reproductively isolated from riverine bass even though both groups may spawn in the same rivers. Adjacent riverine populations …

Novel Antifreeze Protein Constructs For Improved Activity, Ozge Can Jan 2008

Novel Antifreeze Protein Constructs For Improved Activity, Ozge Can

ETD Archive

Many organisms are exposed to subzero temperatures in nature and can survive these temperatures by the effect of antifreeze proteins (AFPs), which inhibit ice crystal growth and change the morphology of ice crystals. Although the effects of these proteins, such as recrystallization inhibition, ice growth inhibition, and crystal habit changes, are known, a conclusive description of the protein-ice crystal interaction including interaction energy, surface coverage, and lifetime of adsorbate has been elusive. In this study, different antifreeze protein constructs are designed and expressed such that they can be conjugated to polymers to increase the thermal hysteresis activity especially at low …

A Study Of Resiliency In African-American Middle School Boys, Andrea Celico Jan 2008

A Study Of Resiliency In African-American Middle School Boys, Andrea Celico

ETD Archive

While our nation claims that we provide "equal learning opportunities" for all, the Black-White achievement gap still exists. This leads to a variety of political, economic, and social ramifications for our students. With this said, seldom are studies conducted that disprove the countless theories that explain why African-American students are at-risk for academic success. As an attempt to determine environmental factors that contribute to the achievement gap between African-American and Caucasian students, it is important to gain a greater understanding of how academically successful African-American students have managed to translate their struggles and experiences of oppression into academic success (Griffin …

Quadrupole Magnetic Field-Flow Fractionation;A Novel Technique For The Characterization Of Magnetic Particles, Francesca Carpino Jan 2008

Quadrupole Magnetic Field-Flow Fractionation;A Novel Technique For The Characterization Of Magnetic Particles, Francesca Carpino

ETD Archive

In the last few decades, the development and use of nanotechnology has become of increasing importance. Magnetic nanoparticles, because of their unique properties, have been employed in many different areas of application. They are generally made of a core of magnetic material coated with some other material to stabilize them and to help disperse them in suspension. The unique feature of magnetic nanoparticles is their response to a magnetic field. They are generally superparamagnetic, in which case they become magnetized only in a magnetic field and lose their magnetization when the field is removed. It is this feature that makes …

Urban High School Counselors' Experiences With Students' Access To And Success In College, Kristie Lynn Cooper Jan 2008

Urban High School Counselors' Experiences With Students' Access To And Success In College, Kristie Lynn Cooper

ETD Archive

Higher education is not equally accessible for low-income students, first-generation students, and students of color, nor are these students equally prepared for post-secondary success. Although much has been gained from substantial research identifying factors that predict college access and retention for underrepresented students, the role of the high school counselor, which has been identified as critical for college planning among urban students, has been conspicuously absent. Based on the role of school counselors in providing influence on underrepresented students' postsecondary planning, this study examined the experiences of urban high school counselors. Two rounds of semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather …

A Case In Kinase 2 Inhibitor Is A Potent Anti-Cancer Drug Candidate, Alieta Ciocea Jan 2008

A Case In Kinase 2 Inhibitor Is A Potent Anti-Cancer Drug Candidate, Alieta Ciocea

ETD Archive

Cancer is so widespread and lethal that it can be considered the biggest health problem of our century. Cancer drug development is a real challenge. Efforts outlined in this work were directed towards showing solid evidence that casein kinase 2 inhibitors can be used as a starting point for the development of potential cancer therapy. We first studied the effect of a specific CK2 inhibitor, DMAT, in a malignant megakaryoblastic leukemia cell line (MEG-01). Treated cells grew at a significantly lower rate than non-treated cells. Apoptosis was induced by DMAT in MEG-01 cells, dose and time dependent. When stimulated with …

Hydrogenase Inhibition By O2: Density Functional Theory/Molecular Mechanics Investigation, Daniela Dogaru Jan 2008

Hydrogenase Inhibition By O2: Density Functional Theory/Molecular Mechanics Investigation, Daniela Dogaru

ETD Archive

[Fe-Fe]-hydrogenases are enzymes that reversibly catalyze the reduction of protons to molecular hydrogen, which occurs in anaerobic media. In living systems, [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenases shift the reversible reaction towards H2 formation. The [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenase H-cluster is the active site, which contains two iron atoms (Fep-Fed, i.e., proximal and distal iron). Because most experimental and theoretical investigations confirm that the structure of di-iron air inhibited species is FepII-FedII-O-O-H-, O2 has to be prevented from binding to Fed in all di-iron subcluster oxidation states in order to retain a catalytically active enzyme. By understanding the catalytic processes of metalloenzymes, researches are enabled to produce an …

There is a lack of outcome research in regards to the treatment of adolescents, and even less for urban low-income African American adolescents. In the past, the fields of counseling, psychology, and social work have focused on individual counseling approaches and in-patient treatment facilities as methods for dealing with adolescents with drug, alcohol, and mental health issues (as well as other delinquent behaviors). The purpose of this study is to use archival data to answer research hypotheses to gain a better understanding of what variables (more specifically treatment modality) aid in the treatment of urban low-income African American adolescents. The …

Fabrication Of Nanostructured Metals And Their Hydrogen Storage Properties, Asli Ertan Jan 2008

Fabrication Of Nanostructured Metals And Their Hydrogen Storage Properties, Asli Ertan

ETD Archive

Searching for new energy sources is highly desirable for the next generations when rapidly changing factors are considered such as population, increasing pollution and exhaustion of fossil fuels. Hence, there is a need for clean, safe and efficient energy carriers or forms of energy that can be transported to the end user. One of these energy carriers is electricity which has been used widely and can be produced from various sources. However, its production from fossil fuels contributes to pollution. On the other hand hydrogen, due to its abundance, light weight, low mass density, high energy density and non-polluting nature …

African American Psychologists' Attitudes Toward Psychotherapy, Ramone Ford Jan 2008

African American Psychologists' Attitudes Toward Psychotherapy, Ramone Ford

ETD Archive

Over the last fifty years, Americans attitude of psychotherapy has become more accepting. However, in the African American community the attitudes have not been as accepting. Thompson, Bazile, and Akbar (2004) documented that African Americans had utilized alternative resources such as friends, the church and other community resources, in attending to commonly treatable mental health disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety). The purpose of this dissertation is to discover the attitudes of African American psychologists toward psychotherapy. Jordan, Bogat, and Smith (2001) hypothesized that African American professional psychologists will be the future of conducting research with African Americans, because of their cultural …

We study the feasibility of a novel hybrid solar-wind hybrid system that shares most of its infrastructure and components. During periods of clear sunny days the system will generate electricity from the sun using a parabolic concentrator. The concentrator is formed by individual mirror elements and focuses the light onto high intensity vertical multi-junction (VMJ) cells. During periods of high wind speeds and at night, the same concentrator setup will be reconfigured to channel the wind into a wind turbine which will be used to harness wind energy. In this study we report on the feasibility of this type of …

The Development Of An In Vivo Spinal Fusion Monitor Using Microelectromechanical (Mems) Technology To Create Implantable Microsensors, Lisa Anne Ferrara Jan 2008

The Development Of An In Vivo Spinal Fusion Monitor Using Microelectromechanical (Mems) Technology To Create Implantable Microsensors, Lisa Anne Ferrara

ETD Archive

Surgical fusion of the spine is a conventional approach, and often last alternative, to the correction of a degenerative painful spinal segment. The procedure involves the surgical removal of the intervertebral disc at the problematic site, and the placement of a bone graft that is commonly harvested from the patients iliac crest and placed within the discectomized space. The surrounding bone is expected to incorporate and remodel into the bone graft to eventually provide an immobilized site. Spinal instrumentation often accompanies the bone graft to provide further immobility to the targeted site, thus augmenting the fusion process. However, the status …

The Impact Of Local Historical Designation On Residential Property Value; An Analysis Of Three Slow-Growth And Three Fast-Growth Central Cities In The United States, Akram M. Ijla

ETD Archive

Historic designation is thought to have a role in neighborhood economic and community development. Local designation of historic districts is increasingly used as a tool to revitalize deteriorated neighborhoods and to protect endangered historical districts. A number of limitations in several previous studies have made policy development as well as a complete assessment of the impact of designation difficult. Some past studies focused only on historic neighborhoods in one city or one state other studies have tested the impact of historic designation in general without distinguishing between local, state, or federal designation. Lastly, several earlier studies have also relied on …

Effective Area And Effective Volume Calculations For Ceramic Test Specimens, Rahul Jain Jan 2008

Effective Area And Effective Volume Calculations For Ceramic Test Specimens, Rahul Jain

ETD Archive

Calculation of effective volume and/or effective area is a key step in estimating reliability of ceramic component life cycle. Most common tests performed to assess the strength and reliability of components made from ceramics are bend bar specimens tested in three-point and four-point flexure, C-ring and O-ring specimen under diametral compressive or tensile loads and biaxial ring-on-ring specimens. ASTM closed form solutions for the effective volume and area exists for these specimen geometries which are based on classical theories with underlying assumptions. In general the closed form expressions are valid for limited specimen geometry bounds. An alternative numerical approach has …
