The Stress Management Self-Efficacy Inventory (Smsei): Development And Initial Psychometrics, Kristin Higgins Dec 2005

The Stress Management Self-Efficacy Inventory (Smsei): Development And Initial Psychometrics, Kristin Higgins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of the current study was to develop, pilot, and establish the initial psychometrics of the Stress Management Self-Efficacy Inventory (SMSEI). Once developed and positive psychometrics established, middle school counselors and other mental health professionals can use the SMSEI to identify children who lack self-efficacy in the area of stress management. Once adolescents are identified as having low stress management self-efficacy, this measure can also aid professionals in creating programs and interventions. The SMSEI measures how well adolescents believe they can manage their stress as well as measures specific areas or management techniques that a child believes they …

All-Boy Mathematics Classes In Middle School., Amanda Neel Davis Dec 2005

All-Boy Mathematics Classes In Middle School., Amanda Neel Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comparative case study focused on six mathematics teachers of all-boy classes in three middle schools. Each school chose to experiment with gendered classes to improve specific, yet somewhat different, outcomes. A purpose of this study was not to compare single-gender schooling with coeducation, but rather, to focus on each school's implementation process and to identify school and classroom factors that seemed to contribute to success of the single-gender program. Another purpose was to examine mathematics teaching. Observational analysis used as a framework the Five Strands of Mathematics Proficiency. Related areas of inquiry were classroom time allocation, textbook selection and …

Victimization During The Middle School Years: Exploring The Relationship Between Emotion Regulation And Emotional/Behavioral Outcomes, Jason E. Harlacher

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present thesis examined emotion regulation differences among victims and non victims of bullying and its role as a mediator in the link between victimization and internalizing or externalizing outcomes. Participants from Grades 6 to 8 (n = 240) completed measures that assessed level of victimization, emotions felt relative to emotions expressed during bullying situations, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Weak victim-related differences revealed that boy victims reported feeling more shame and expressing more fear than nonvictims, whereas girl victims reported expressing more shame and feeling and expressing more anger and sadness. A new measure of emotional regulation did …

Bringing Literature To Life For Sixth Grade "Reluctant Readers": A Collaborative, Participatory Study Using Theatre For Young Audiences Experiences To Address Aliteracy, Wayne Brinda Jan 2005

Bringing Literature To Life For Sixth Grade "Reluctant Readers": A Collaborative, Participatory Study Using Theatre For Young Audiences Experiences To Address Aliteracy, Wayne Brinda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the current disenchantment toward reading literature among adolescents, this study explored if an Artistic Director of a Theatre for Young Audiences could lead the transformation of aliterate, sixth grade "reluctant readers" into becoming engaged readers of literature? These students have the basic skills to read, but choose not to read for a variety of reasons. The study used the intervention of specific, collaborative theatrical strategies, which are alternative approaches to traditional middle school reading pedagogy. The strategies included rehearsal techniques, organizing small group "Production Teams," preparing for and experiencing a theatrical adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, and actively …

Drama Discovery: The Effect Of Dramatic Arts In Combination With Bibliotherapy On The Self-Efficacy Of Students With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Disabilities Regarding Their Understanding Of Their Own Exceptionalities, Michele Jacobs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of dramatic arts in combination with bibliotherapy, which is the use of literary sources to help people solve complex problems and find understanding about a topic (Sullivan and Strang, 2003). The Drama Discovery curriculum was piloted in a middle school classroom for eleven students with emotional/ behavioral disabilities and one student with delinquent behaviors at a small private alternative education school in Western Pennsylvania. Students with emotional/ behavioral disabilities often have low self-efficacy when it comes to explaining their own disabilities, coping with the label of having a disability, and …

Middle School Teachers' Beliefs About How They Communicate Caring And Students' Perceptions Of Their Teachers' Caring Behaviors, Cynthia D. Kainaroi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was three-fold: to examine the behaviors middle school teachers use and believe communicate caring and students' perceptions of their caring behaviors; to determine if a discrepancy exists between the two; and to identify the nature of any discrepancies. Participants included 16 eighth grade teachers and 184 eighth grade students. Data were collected through the use of a teacher questionnaire and an anonymous student writing assignment. Teacher and student responses were grouped into emerging themes of caring. Students Perceptions Of Curriculum And Pedagogy In A Newcomer Program, Felicia Billey

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus of this study was to learn about student perceptions of curriculum and teaching pedagogy in their Newcomer classroom. In order to research this topic I conducted a case study of the Newcomer class that I teach. During a six-week period I implemented four teaching strategies that I believed to be affective for second language acquisition. The data collected through parent and student interviews, student free writes, as well as my own observations, reflects on these four strategies. The research reveals that students are enthusiastic and motivated to learn when they are encouraged to incorporate their prior experiences. Data …

From Seclusion To Inclusion: A Comparative Case Study Of Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders In Middle Schools, Cheryl Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transition of students with emotional and behavioral disorders has often been difficult when the move is made from self-contained classes to a less restrictive environment in general education classes. Data were collected over a 2 month period using semi-structured student interviews and teacher surveys, as well as student records and other school …

Integrating Horticulture Biology And Coastal Environmental Issues Into The Middle School Science Curriculum, Kathryn Lauren Karsh Jan 2005

Integrating Horticulture Biology And Coastal Environmental Issues Into The Middle School Science Curriculum, Kathryn Lauren Karsh

LSU Master's Theses

Louisiana is losing nearly 34 square miles of coastal land each year. Scientists predict by 2050 one-third of Louisiana’s coast land will disappear (LaCoast, 2004). Many restoration projects have begun to counteract the severe land loss. Scientists use restoration methods such as vegetative plantings, sedimentary and freshwater diversions, and hydrologic projects to prevent land loss. Coastal Roots, a school-based nursery stewardship project for upper elementary to high school students coordinated by Louisiana Sea Grant College Program and LSU AgCenter, helps students understand the land loss crisis and gives them a constructive way to help restore the damaged coastal habitats by …
