Temperature And Mold Size Effects On Density Gradients And Mechanical Properties In A Polyurethane Foam System, Dacia J Jackovich

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Rigid polyurethane foams can be used as a thermal or vibration insulator and energy absorption material. They are often molded directly in place, where a smooth, thin skin forms between the mold and the cellular structure of the foam. Density gradients and the skin are shown to have an effect on the mechanical properties of the foam; This work will investigate the effects of processing temperature and mold size on the average density, density gradient, compressive modulus, and compressive strength, for a molded free rise, water blown polyurethane foam system. Four processing temperatures are used during foam fabrication: 25°C, 40°C, …

The Effects Of Exercise On Homocysteine Levels In Men And Women, Tracey Michelle Zuehlsdorff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A recent coronary risk factor, and one believed to be and important biochemical marker of Coronary Heart Disease, is elevated levels of serum homocysteine (Boushley et al., 1995; Malinow et al., 1994; Malinow et al., 1999; Nygard et al., 1995; Stampfer et al., 1992). Serum homocysteine levels above 10 umol/L are considered elevated. There are several unalterable factors, which result in the elevation of homocysteine such as heredity, age, and gender. There are other factors that are alterable such as diet and possibly exercise. The purpose of the study was to determine if a 12-week daily progressive exercise program reduced …

A Study Of The Effects Of Lithium Perchlorate On Poly(Ethylene Oxide), (Peo) Melt Dynamic Behavior Using Fabry-Perot Interferometry, Radoslav Boykov Bogoslovov Jan 2003

A Study Of The Effects Of Lithium Perchlorate On Poly(Ethylene Oxide), (Peo) Melt Dynamic Behavior Using Fabry-Perot Interferometry, Radoslav Boykov Bogoslovov

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Poly(ethylene oxide)/lithium perchlorate (PEO/LiClO4) complexes are widely studied as a prototype solid polymer electrolyte in rechargeable lithium-polymer batteries. Characterizing the structure and dynamics of the system in its molten state is important for understanding the role of the polymer environment in lithium ion transport and conductivity. We implement a fiber-optic coupled Fabry-Perot interferometer to investigate the electrolyte elastic properties and structural response times, which are both related to the intrachain local mobility and therefore to ion diffusion. We propose a simple and inexpensive fiber-optic experimental design combining two experimental techniques, Fabry-Perot interferometry and photon correlation spectroscopy. Our tests and evaluation …

This loop is a multi-section closed system that differs in diameter from one part to another. As a result, an intensive study on the geometry effect is necessary and valuable. In this thesis, this problem was simulated by commercial software STAR-CD. Results provide a good prediction where …

Effects Of A Heat Acclimation Program On Physiologic And Psychological Responses To Work And Heat While Wearing Fire Ensemble, Dale Anthony Branks Jan 2003

Effects Of A Heat Acclimation Program On Physiologic And Psychological Responses To Work And Heat While Wearing Fire Ensemble, Dale Anthony Branks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Heat acclimation program effects on rectal temperature and heart rate during walks in the heat wearing structural fire protective ensemble (FE) were examined. On six consecutive days, male subjects (N = 7) walked 30 minutes on a treadmill (46--53% V˙O2peak) within a 40 +/- 2°C, 20--22% r.h. environment, wearing FE. Rectal (Trec) mean skin (Tsk), and rectal-skin temperature gradient (T rec-Tsk), heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), minute ventilation (VE), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), rating of thermal discomfort (RTD), sweat rate and Na+ and K+ were assessed daily. Significance (p < 0.05) was determined by one way repeated measures ANOVA. Average heart rate, and daily sweat Na+ and K+ concentrations were the only variables observed to decrease significantly during the six days. These changes however were small and represent a questionable practical benefit. Therefore, a six day heat acclimation program during summer months provides no benefit to work in the heat while wearing FE.

The Effects Of Enron, Taniel Khamo Jan 2003

The Effects Of Enron, Taniel Khamo

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Enron's collapse and the long-term implications of its failure. The areas affected by the company's demise are: society's perception of business, energy industry, large corporations, and regulation. One way the energy company was made apparently profitable was through a constant push for deregulation of the energy market. In 2000 Enron reported revenue of $100.8 billion, making them number seven on the Fortune 500 list of the largest companies in the country. It is now realized that Enron's accomplishments were due mostly to their misrepresentation of financial documents. This misrepresentation …
