Jeffersonianism And 19th Century American Maritime Defense Policy., Christopher Taylor Ziegler
Jeffersonianism And 19th Century American Maritime Defense Policy., Christopher Taylor Ziegler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper analyzes the fundamental maritime defense mentality that permeated America throughout the early part of the Republic. For fear of economic debt and foreign wars, Thomas Jefferson and his Republican party, opposed the construction of a formidable blue water naval force. Instead, they argued for a small naval force capable of engaging the Barbary pirates and other small similar forces. For protection of the nation and commerce, they wanted a strictly defensive strategy developed around coastal gunboats and harbor fortifications. This research will analyze the naval aspect of this defense mentality from its creation in 1794, through the War …
Sex And Pottery: Erotic Images On Athenian Cups, 600-300 B.C., Michael Lee Banner
Sex And Pottery: Erotic Images On Athenian Cups, 600-300 B.C., Michael Lee Banner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many pages have been written concerning erotic images on Greek vases but few studies have focused on the frequency of erotic images. This is an important concept in determining the significance of the erotic images. Various Athenian cups from the online holdings of the Beazley Archive were investigated, using simple tabulations and Chi-square analysis, for erotic images. Out of 7901 cups only 130 had erotic images. As cups with erotic images represented only a small portion of the sample it was likely that they only appealed to the tastes of a small sub-set of the Athenian population. The context of …

African American Fugitive Slaves And Freemen In Matamoros, Tamaulipas, 1820–1865, John C. Gassner
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In the years leading up to the American Civil War, northeastern Mexico became a destination for fugitive slaves and African American freemen seeking refuge from the oppressive conditions caused by the expansion of the slave-based cotton economy in the southern United States and Texas. The geographic position of Matamoros, as well as social, economic and political changes in Mexico and the United States, made it one of the main destinations for African American emigrants leaving the Texas and other parts of the United States. This thesis examines the factors that caused different elements of African American fugitives slaves and freemen …

The Creation Of A Worldview., Jamie Bryan Price
The Creation Of A Worldview., Jamie Bryan Price
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is an analysis of how fin-de-siècle Vienna and its mayor, Karl Lueger, influenced the development of Adolf Hitler’s worldview.
The works of many authors were consulted in conjunction with newspapers and memoirs of the period in order to gain a better understanding of what the environment of the Austrian capital was like in the fin-de-siècle period.
Several of Vienna’s political, social, and artistic facets are analyzed in an attempt to prove that the general atmosphere of the city influenced Adolf Hitler greatly during his formative years. It is concluded that while Adolf Hitler’s Weltanschauung did not completely crystallize until …
Marshall Keeble And The Implementation Of A Grand Strategy., Darrell L. Broking
Marshall Keeble And The Implementation Of A Grand Strategy., Darrell L. Broking
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the development of Marshall Keeble’s work during the early and middle parts of the twentieth century in the Church of Christ. The purpose of this study is to examine the direction taken by Keeble in his work and determine whether he was a submissive Tom used by whites to accomplish their goals among blacks, or to determine if he was pursuing his own grand strategy to defuse racial tension in the Church of Christ. Conclusions of this research denote that Marshall Keeble was following a grand strategy, or a decisive course of action designed to erase the …
Changing Times, Changing Themes: An Exhibit Proposal Of The Historical Occupancy At The Library Site From 1849 To 1869, Jaime Yap
Culminating Projects in Cultural Resource Management
The James Miller Leaming Resource Center is a public and educational institution established in 2000. Many students today may not know that a human skull was discovered during the construction of the library in January of 1999. ln fact. numerous graves were found at this site, with some having skeletal remains.
There are many stories to tell from past occupants of this block. This. thesis will disclose the historical periods that occurred, how they developed and became an integral part of St. Cloud State University and the larger community. The year 1849 was chosen as the start date for this …
Northwood School: The Survival Story Of An Educational Jewel In The Adirondacks, Perry Babcock
Northwood School: The Survival Story Of An Educational Jewel In The Adirondacks, Perry Babcock
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
Northwood School is an example of a secondary boarding institution whose history mirrors the many changes in private education over the last one hundred years. As was the case with many of these private institutions, Northwood had to contend with the issue of isolation. The school's remote location caused it to evolve its own regional character. The school struggled financially as a not-for-profit institution that relied on tuition revenues and donations to maintain its stature in the competitive boarding school world. Northwood School also found itself challenged to sustain an educational philosophy when its market share dwindled and athletics became …
Striking A Balance: The Unionization Of Portland State University’S Faculty, Amanda Taylor Ellertson
Striking A Balance: The Unionization Of Portland State University’S Faculty, Amanda Taylor Ellertson
Dissertations and Theses
American college and university professors joined labor unions as early as 1916. But it was during the 1970s that higher education turned to collective bargaining as a way to raise the voice of the faculty and negotiate a fair and just work environment. Portland State University voted to have the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) represent them in collective bargaining in 1978. The thesis examines the history of PSU’s AAUP chapter and how unionization impacted the college campus and faculty life.
Collective bargaining in higher education encompasses more than negotiating salary and benefit packages. Since their inception, higher education …
Pardon You? Pardon Me. Controversial Usage Of The Presidential Pardoning Power: From Carter To Clinton., Michael Keith Allen
Pardon You? Pardon Me. Controversial Usage Of The Presidential Pardoning Power: From Carter To Clinton., Michael Keith Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study I propose to examine the usage of the pardoning power of the president as it relates to four aspects: the Nixon pardon, political advancement, defense of the person and his party, and independent private gain through the issuance of pardons. These aspects are all a part of the modern day usage of Article II Section 2 of the Constitution.
The study relies primarily on statements made from the presidents involved, as well as statements made by judicial persons involved in the pardoning process. The study is also drawn from direct investigations, both private and governmental. A good …

Volunteerism Develops Communities, Trains Leaders, And Guards Democracy: Odessa, Texas 1896-1948, Debra Noe Gibbs
Student Dissertations & Theses
Volunteers were an essential tool used to build our nation and communities. The creation and maintenance of communities across the United States relied heavily on the activities of volunteers and their organizations in order to meet the endless needs of both the citizens and the infrastructure. Furthermore, volunteer organizations provided an increase and stability in democracy and in building communities in a variety of ways. First, volunteer organizations filled needs that the government was not able to meet. Second, they were training grounds for developing the skills needed to manage communities. Volunteer associations, by providing avenues and developing skills, helped …
Cherokee Indian Removal: The Treaty Of New Echota And General Winfield Scott., Ovid Andrew Mcmillion
Cherokee Indian Removal: The Treaty Of New Echota And General Winfield Scott., Ovid Andrew Mcmillion
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Treaty of New Echota was signed by a small group of Cherokee Indians and provided for the removal of the Cherokees from their lands in the southeastern United States. This treaty was secured by dishonest means and, despite the efforts of Chief John Ross to prevent the removal of the Cherokees from their homeland to west of the Mississippi River, the terms of the treaty were executed. In May of 1838, under the command of General Winfield Scott, the removal of the Cherokees commenced. Scott encountered many difficulties including inefficient commissioners and superintendents, drought, disease, and the wavering policy …
Jessie Ackerman, 'The Original World Citizen': Temperance Leader, Suffrage Pioneer, Feminist, Humanitarian., Jenny Rushing
Jessie Ackerman, 'The Original World Citizen': Temperance Leader, Suffrage Pioneer, Feminist, Humanitarian., Jenny Rushing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Jessie Ackerman was the second world missionary for the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. Her fascinating life sheds light on the most important issues facing women during this time period. Most WCTU women have been dismissed by twentieth century scholars as being religiously fanatical and conservative. They have been overshadowed by suffragists and other women that we consider more radical by today’s standards. Only in recent years have some feminist historians begun to reexamine the contributions WCTU women made to the suffrage movement and to feminism.
The research for this thesis relies heavily on primary sources including Ackerman’s personal papers found …
A History Of "Especially For Youth" - 1976-1986, John Bytheway
A History Of "Especially For Youth" - 1976-1986, John Bytheway
Theses and Dissertations
The summer of 2002 marked the 26th anniversary of the youth camp “Especially for Youth” (EFY). Over 34,000 teenagers from across the United States, Canada and several foreign countries gathered on thirty-one different college campuses to attend one of the sixty-four sessions of the five-day program. Since the first session in 1976, Especially for Youth has enjoyed steady increases in attendance and popularity. Beginning in the early 1980s, the program's success reached the point that applicants were turned away because there was not enough space to house all those who wanted to attend.
EFY is sponsored by Brigham Young University …
Steamboat Passenger Ferries In Nineteenth Century London: A Cultural Survey, Jennifer Wohlberg
Steamboat Passenger Ferries In Nineteenth Century London: A Cultural Survey, Jennifer Wohlberg
Masters Theses
Traditionally, steamboats and their history have belonged to the area of antiquarians. Many sources in my bibliography focus on the design and use of the boats and neglect the social and cultural impact the boats had on mid-Victorian London life. Steamboats, however, were an important transportation system in mid-Victorian London, so that a study of steamboats can provide an insight into mid-Victorian times. In this thesis, I will place steamboat design construction and use in the context of the social and cultural worlds of mid-Victorian London and the River Thames.
The results of my research yielded a thesis describing the …
Pioneers, Patriots, And Politicians: The Tennessee Militia System, 1772-1857, Trevor Augustine Smith
Pioneers, Patriots, And Politicians: The Tennessee Militia System, 1772-1857, Trevor Augustine Smith
Doctoral Dissertations
Like all U.S. states, prior to the Civil War Tennessee maintained an active militia system. This dissertation examines the establishment, function, and decline of this organization. For more than eighty years the Tennessee militia participated in a number of military conflicts. It also played an important role in the state's social and political development.
The militia was among the first institutions established by the early Tennessee settlers. It began as an informal collection of every able-bodied male. By 1800 the militia had grown considerably, and the volunteers, who served by choice, assumed the burden of meeting the state's military needs. …

Bulgarian Contribution In Building The Byzantine Commonwealth In The Ninth And Tenth Centuries., Pavel Stoyanov Murdzhev
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines factors contributing to Bulgaria’s important role and involvement in the creation the Eastern European Orthodox Community under the cultural influence of Byzantine Empire from the middle of ninth century.
The study primarily uses original Greek and Latin sources translated either in Old Church Slavonic or in contemporary Bulgarian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian or English. The approach of this thesis places Bulgarian-Byzantine relations in the context of the creation of the Eastern European Orthodox Community, illustrating that adopting and interpreting of Byzantine culture by the Slavic nations is a process of mutual acculturation, with paramount importance for the creation of …

Attitude Changes Resulting From A Course In Middle East History, Aaron Imig
Master of Education Program Theses
This study explored the change in high school students' cultural acceptance of Islamic peoples after a semester long course in Middle East History. Ten senior high school students in a small Christian high school were tested in knowledge, visual perception, and cultural attitudes before and after the semester course. Final data collection suggests that the population size for this study needed to be larger and more diverse. The results were not significant enough to indicate attitudes were changed over the course of the semester. There was not a positive correlation found between knowledge gained by the students and the resulting …
Beachheads : A Historical Reconsideration Of The U.S. Landings At Anzio And Inchon, Travis James Hardy
Beachheads : A Historical Reconsideration Of The U.S. Landings At Anzio And Inchon, Travis James Hardy
Master's Theses
Traditional thinking in American military history holds that the amphibious Allied landing at Anzio, Italy, on 22 January 1944 was a complete failure and represents one of the biggest blunders of World War II. This is especially true when Anzio is compared to the American landing at Inchon, Korea, on 15 September 1950 during the Korean War, that has been widely hailed as being one of the unrivaled amphibious successes in American military history. This thesis addresses the issues of whether Anzio was truly a "failure" and whether Inchon was truly a "success." Relying upon the personal paper collections of …

"Enough Glory For Us All" : The "Negro Exhibit" At The Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition, 1907, John Thomas Wilkes
Master's Theses
The Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition of 1907 invited the United States and the world to display their progress in a way befitting the dawn of a new century. Though this exposition fell short of matching the notoriety of other Victorian fairs, African- Americans successfully presented their advancement and historic contributions to American society, despite the shortcomings of the exposition itself and the dismal state of the nation's race relations. Black organizers at Jamestown underscored the rise of their people by maintaining firm control over the entire "Negro" exhibit, an achievement viewed as untenable at earlier fairs. Records of the United States …
Sir Nicholas Throckmorton: A Diplomatic Advisor To Queen Elizabeth, Kenneth M. Kisner
Sir Nicholas Throckmorton: A Diplomatic Advisor To Queen Elizabeth, Kenneth M. Kisner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study concentrates on Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, a resident ambassador sent to France in the first years of Elizabeth's reign. He had never held a high level government position before this time, but was remembered for his ability to give advice on matters of foreign policy. Typically historians have approached the subject of the Queen's policy from a top down perspective. This thesis attempts to redress this view by looking at how diplomacy was conducted through the eyes of a diplomat.
The culture of diplomacy created statesmen and foreign policy advisors out of the diplomats in Elizabeth's reign. Ambassadors and …
Colonizing Cyberspace: The Formation Of Virtual Communities, Matthew Jones
Colonizing Cyberspace: The Formation Of Virtual Communities, Matthew Jones
Masters Theses
The topic of this thesis is the electronic bulletin board systems that existed in Memphis, TN from the early 1980s until around 1999. Although initially a fringe hobby limited to computer enthusiasts, the declining cost of computers, and their subsequent proliferation, allowed those without technical proficiency to dial in. Over time, those who connected to the BBSes developed into a close-knit, emotionally involved community. The dynamics of the communities that arose on BBSes differed based on numerous factors, particularly age. This thesis attempts to examine those interactions, as well as challenge the notion that community is wedded to geography, an …
"With A Joint View To The Entertainment And Information Of Mankind:" The Development Of Eighteenth Century British Tourism, Sarah Caroline Wegener
"With A Joint View To The Entertainment And Information Of Mankind:" The Development Of Eighteenth Century British Tourism, Sarah Caroline Wegener
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Tourism in its current form did not exist until the nineteenth century with the emergence of the railroads. However, crucial developments in mid-eighteenth century Great Britain started the process leading to modem tourism. Over the course of the eighteenth century, the concept behind tourism expanded and its motivations were transformed. Early eighteenth century tourism was associated with wealth and class. United in their various interests by a common desire, tourists sought experience to assist them in their future life. By the end of the century a shift had taken place, and tourism took on a new face. Though this form …

The New Top Hats At Westminster : A Longitudinal Study Of The Effects Of The British General Election Of 1906 On The Liberal Party, Michael Rosenberger
Honors Theses
When the new Parliament first met on 13 February 1906 there were a lot of new black top hats at Westminster. The Liberal success in the election the previous month had not only brought the Liberals to power with a resounding majority, but it also brought in 310 new Members of Parliament, 220 of them Liberals, who had never before held national office. The new MPs roamed and mingled through the corridors of Westminster with their new tops hats perched lightly on their heads, the brims tilted down towards their noses. The black hats had been polished to a shine …
American Identity In The Illinois Territory, 1809-1818, Daniel Northrup Finucane
American Identity In The Illinois Territory, 1809-1818, Daniel Northrup Finucane
Honors Theses
Many histories have been writen about Illinois, both by early inhabitants and modern scholars. The histories are quite inclusive, yet none specifically address the topic that I am examining. Scarce material exists regarding the Americanism of the early settlers in Illinois. But, in fashioning my argument on the subject, I have taken from a variety of these cources bits and pieces of information about geography, demographics, economics, politics, and social life. My hope is that these facts and arguments will help to substantiate my suggestions regarding the mindsets of territorial Illinoisians. The work coming closest to my focus is an …
Guided By God: The Catholic Church And Political Legitimacy In The Philippines, Steven B. Shirley
Guided By God: The Catholic Church And Political Legitimacy In The Philippines, Steven B. Shirley
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The developing world is witnessing a growing (some may say disturbing) trend towards “de-secularization” of national governments. This trend has been understudied and misunderstood over the past decade. Government experts and scholars alike too often view this trend through the lens of “threat” analysis and in so doing miss key cultural, historical, and political factors at work. This study attempts to redress this problem. By looking at political legitimacy and the role religious organizations such as the Catholic Church may play, a new understanding of how religious institutions can shape and mold governments and policies emerges.
This study focuses specifically …
The Christian Century And The Fluidity Of American Ideologies, 1919-1932, Michael Levin
The Christian Century And The Fluidity Of American Ideologies, 1919-1932, Michael Levin
Honors Theses
The most fundamental belief echoed in the Christian Century during the '20s was a persistent optimism about human progress. Editors of the journal devoted such a great deal of energy to the task of diagnosing the ills of society because they held the improvement of the American system to be both beneficial and achievable. It is from this platform of optimism that the Century derived the various components of its complex worldview: its religious morality, pragamatic approach, and its egalitarian belief. All of these principles were dependent on the notion that tomorrow could and would be better than today. The …
The Tragedy Of The Rivers: Building Authority Over The British Water Environment, Kevin B. Vichcales
The Tragedy Of The Rivers: Building Authority Over The British Water Environment, Kevin B. Vichcales
Dissertations
"The Tragedy of the Rivers: Building Authority over the British Water Environment" examines the problem of rivers as common public resources in modern Britain. Viewed historically, the enduring problem of environmental pollution control in Britain has been the establishment of regulating authority over aspects of nature that are regarded simultaneously as economic resources, public utilities, and public amenities. Legislators, subject to pressure from industrial polluters, political parties, and advocates for environmental quality, sought at different times to locate authority at local, regional, national and extra-national levels. Each effort failed to resolve the issue of authority over the environment, because administrative …

An Interdisciplinary, Teaming Approach To History And English Instruction At The Secondary Level, Miles J. Caples
All Graduate Projects
The relationship of integrating history and English objectives to enhance student achievement was studied. A model curriculum has been developed to connect U.S. History and American Literature content. Research has been obtained that indicates improved student learning when subjects are integrated in a relevant fashion. Secondary schools using interdisciplinary curriculum are showing improved GPA's, attendance and standardized test scores. Secondary teachers must align their daily lesson plans and assessments with the state essential learning's in both the history and language arts area.
