Effect Of Life Skills Training With Male Youth Who Are Prone To Aggression, Sarah Skradski Dec 2001

Effect Of Life Skills Training With Male Youth Who Are Prone To Aggression, Sarah Skradski

Student Work

The effect of life skills training in reducing aggressive behaviors was researched with seven subjects in a residential treatment facility. The subjects were between the ages of 10-15 and prone to aggression. The subjects had been diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Impulse Control Disorder, and/or Conduct Disorder. The seven subjects’ aggressive behaviors were assessed using the excessive aggression sub-scale on the Burks’ Behavior Rating Scale. Four full-time staff members completed the Burks’ Behavior Rating Scale three times over a 16-week period of time, observing the subjects’ behaviors with and without the life skills training. The results from the paired-dependent samples …

Relationship Between Cognitive Performance And Sociocultural And Linguistic Variables In Bilingual Mexican American Children, Lorraine Geralyn Boudville

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study investigated the relationship between cognitive ability (dependent variable) and 5 independent variables: acculturation, socioeconomic status (SES), oral acquisition of syntactic structures, family size, and family structure. Instruments used were the WISC-III, Bilingual Syntax Measure (BSM), Sociocultural Scales in the System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment (SOMPA). The sample consisted of 96 bilingual Mexican American children aged six and seven years, randomly selected from five school districts in south Texas; 47 were female, and 49, male. The method of analysis was multiple linear regression. The null hypothesis was tested at the .05 level of significance, using a F distribution. Results …

Work Family Policies And Perceptions Of Fairness: Perspectives On Supervisor Support And Work Schedule Control, Emily R. Blodgett Oct 2001

Work Family Policies And Perceptions Of Fairness: Perspectives On Supervisor Support And Work Schedule Control, Emily R. Blodgett

Student Work

In response to increasing degrees o f work and family conflict, some companies have implemented work and family policies. However, evidence suggests that many companies will not implement work and family policies because they believe that some employees will feel that the policies are unfair, although this claim has been made with only minimal empirical evidence. This study examined employees’ fairness perceptions of work/family policies. It was hypothesized that employees who might benefit from a work/family policy would feel that the policy was more fair than would employees who would not benefit from such a policy. To test this hypothesis, …

A Field Study Examining Leader-Member Exchange (Lmx): Challenging The Universally Positive Conceptualization Of Lmx, Thomas Michael Hepperlen Aug 2001

A Field Study Examining Leader-Member Exchange (Lmx): Challenging The Universally Positive Conceptualization Of Lmx, Thomas Michael Hepperlen

Student Work

The construct of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) - which emphasizes the quality of the relationship within supervisor-subordinate dyads - has received much empirical support over the last 25 years. Although high LMX relationships have generally been construed as universally positive in the scientific literature, some recent evidence suggests that: (a) all employees may not have an equal opportunity to develop high LMX relationships with their superiors, and (b) some high LMX employees may actually perform below the level o f their low LMX counterparts. In order to address both the positive and negative aspects o f LMX, the present thesis proposed …

Gang Affiliation In Adolescence And Attachment In Infancy, Joan E. Unis Jun 2001

Gang Affiliation In Adolescence And Attachment In Infancy, Joan E. Unis

Student Work

According to Attachment Theory (Bowlby, 1969, 1973, 1980), infants become attached to their primary caregiver for protection and security. Gang literature reports that individuals join gangs for the companionship and protection a gang can offer (Hochhaus & Sousa, 1987-88; Friedman, Mann, & Friedman, 1975). The aim of this present study was to examine the proposition that individuals who eventually become gang members in adolescence have an insecure attachment to caregivers, a secure attachment to peers, and will have lower scores on constructs related to attachment. The participants in this study were 90 individuals, divided equally into gang and non-gang members. …

Comparing Assessment Measures With Spanish And English Speaking Children, Katrina M. Gill-Glover May 2001

Comparing Assessment Measures With Spanish And English Speaking Children, Katrina M. Gill-Glover

Student Work

Practitioners who serve all children are required to administer an accurate comprehensive evaluation of skills in a variety of domains, provide functional information that is easily translated into interventions, and use data to monitor progress. Because of the language and task demands of most standardized cognitive tests, an inappropriate measure of a child's ability may result. Therefore, the need for a linguistically non-biased cognitive measures for early childhood children is necessary. One particular assessment that is proposed is the Play Assessment of Cognitive Skills Scale (PACSS), a functional assessment technique used to determine a child's current level of cognitive functioning …

Exploring The Effects Of Guilt, Spousal Support, And Role Conflict On The Psychological Well-Being Of The Educated Full-Time Stay-At-Home Mother, Susan Donley Desimone Phd May 2001

Exploring The Effects Of Guilt, Spousal Support, And Role Conflict On The Psychological Well-Being Of The Educated Full-Time Stay-At-Home Mother, Susan Donley Desimone Phd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of guilt, degree of spousal support, role conflict, and decreased psychological well-being experienced by educated stay at home mothers with young children. Social role theory is utilized as a basis for the development of a theoretical model. Relevant research literature does not identify a link between guilt, degree of spousal support, role conflict, and decreased psychological well-being in stay at home educated mothers. The significance of this study was to bring recognition to the phenomenon among educated stay at home mothers that little or no attention has been acknowledged. The …

The Effects Of Fair Treatment On Customer Reactions In A Service Encounter, Tara Rohde Apr 2001

The Effects Of Fair Treatment On Customer Reactions In A Service Encounter, Tara Rohde

Student Work

Given that fair treatment increases customer satisfaction (e.g., Bolton & Drew, 1991), the present study integrated consumer and organizational justice concepts by testing the interaction among distributive justice (DJ), procedural justice (PJ), and interactional justice (IJ) with respect to customers. The predicted nature o f the interaction differed from that obtained in research with employees such that unfavorable outcomes, rather than favorable outcomes (Skarlicki & Folger, 1997), were expected to render PJ and IJ inconsequential. The sample included 37 male and 83 female university students ranging in age from 19 to 46 years. Participants watched a videotaped scenario depicting an …

The Relation Of Religious Orientation, Coping Behaviors, And Adjustment In Family Caregivers Of Hospice Patients, Rachel Leigh Huhra Jan 2001

The Relation Of Religious Orientation, Coping Behaviors, And Adjustment In Family Caregivers Of Hospice Patients, Rachel Leigh Huhra

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The relation of religious orientation, coping behaviors, and adjustment (i.e. depression, anger, anxiety, and life satisfaction) was assessed in 34 family caregivers of hospice patients in a veterans affairs hospice program. Intrinsic religious orientation was positively correlated with positive religious coping behaviors and life satisfaction; and negatively correlated with depression, anxiety, and inward hostility. Extrinsic religious orientation was positively correlated with negative and positive religious coping behaviors and an outward expression of anger. It was not correlated with higher levels of life satisfaction, depression, or anxiety. Positive religious coping predicted depression and inward hostility beyond non-religious coping. Study limitations and …

The Effect Of Prime Word Processing On The Semantic Priming Effect., Satomi Imai Jan 2001

The Effect Of Prime Word Processing On The Semantic Priming Effect., Satomi Imai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In three experiments the effect of ease of prime word access on semantic priming was investigated. Ease of prime access was manipulated by prime word frequency, by prime degradation, and by prime repetition. Primes accessed faster (high frequency prime words, repeated primes) should produce larger priming than those accessed more slowly (low frequency prime words, degraded prime words). The time course of priming was also examined by comparing a 150 ms SOA to a 500 ms. The results partially supported the hypothesis. There was a prime word frequency effect on priming in both short and long SOA conditions. High frequency …

Effects Of The High -Probability Sequence With And Without Extinction In Children With Feeding Disorders., Jennifer Eileen Dawson Jan 2001

Effects Of The High -Probability Sequence With And Without Extinction In Children With Feeding Disorders., Jennifer Eileen Dawson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of the high-probability instructional sequence, with and without extinction, on increasing compliance to eat in three children with severe food refusal and selectivity were evaluated. Pediatric feeding disorders, in which children refuse most or all food and drink, are a rare and life threatening problem that requires intensive treatment. The majority of behavioral techniques used with feeding disordered children manipulate the consequence of food refusal. The use of antecedent procedures in the treatment of food refusal has been limited. One antecedent technique, the high-probability instructional sequence, involves first presenting the individual with a series of instructions that he/she …

Variables Related To Sexual Aggression In Male College Students., Laura Anne Estupinan-Kane Jan 2001

Variables Related To Sexual Aggression In Male College Students., Laura Anne Estupinan-Kane

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Using the Pathfinder computer algorithm comparisons were made of participants' knowledge organization of sexual, sexually aggressive, and aggressive concepts. Three hundred and fifty-two heterosexual males (81 admitting a past history and future likelihood of sexual aggressive/coercive behavior; 111 admitting a past history of engaging in sexual aggression; 88 admitting no past history of or future likelihood of engaging in sexual aggression) rated all possible pairwise combinations of 18 words relevant to sex, aggression, sexual aggression, and emotion. Analyses of the dependent variable, number of links, failed to support predicted differences as a function of level of sexual aggression in the …

A Treatment-Based Reading Assessment., Gary Joseph Duhon Jr Jan 2001

A Treatment-Based Reading Assessment., Gary Joseph Duhon Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Each year a large number of students are identified as having problems in reading. The methodology for the identification of reading problems has been established and in practice for several years, however, the tools necessary for the identification of remediation procedures appropriate for the individual student lack this level of refinement. This study is an attempt at refining current assessment practices for the purpose of identifying remediation procedures that are effective on the level of the individual student. A conceptual model of learning (instructional hierarchy) was combined with a treatment based functional assessment methodology, resulting in a behavior analytic approach …

The Effect Of Psychotropic Medications On Social Skills In Persons With Profound Mental Retardation., Jerald Wayne Bamburg Jr Jan 2001

The Effect Of Psychotropic Medications On Social Skills In Persons With Profound Mental Retardation., Jerald Wayne Bamburg Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

People with mental retardation exhibit a large number of behavioral excesses and deficits and the full range of psychopathology. As a result, interventions involving psychotropic medications are widely used in the population. However, few conducted studies have examined the effect of psychotropic interventions on the total behavioral repertoire. Most studies examine only the suppression of symptoms or maladaptive behaviors without considering the manner in which medications may alter the positive behavioral repertoire or cause deleterious side effects. This study aimed to address medication effects on the positive behavioral spectrum by examining the effects of these interventions on social skills, adaptive …

Treatment Outcome Of Childhood Obesity: The Effect Of Children's Psychological Distress And Problematic Behavior., Tana Louise Hope Jan 2001

Treatment Outcome Of Childhood Obesity: The Effect Of Children's Psychological Distress And Problematic Behavior., Tana Louise Hope

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The number of children and adolescents effected by obesity has been increasing over the past 30 years. Current treatment of childhood obesity focuses primarily on increasing physical activity, modifying diet, providing nutritional education and teaching self-monitoring and stimulus control procedures. Although children have been shown to lose weight by participating in these treatment programs, the amount of weight children lose during treatment is often small, and long-term maintenance of weightloss continues to be challenging for many. Given the relatively weak outcome of childhood obesity treatment programs, research into factors that effect treatment outcome is needed. Psychological distress and problematic behavior …

Parenting Practices As A Moderator Of Exposure To Community Violence., Nicole Francingues Lanclos Jan 2001

Parenting Practices As A Moderator Of Exposure To Community Violence., Nicole Francingues Lanclos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Numerous studies evidence that urban youth are exposed to epidemic proportions of community violence. Exposure to community violence has been associated with significant levels of distress including aggression, academic difficulties, anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Although it is clear that children who experience chronic levels of violence exposure are at increased risk for poor developmental outcome, the consequences of exposure are not the same for all children. Parenting factors found to buffer the effects of community violence exposure include family size, parental presence in the home, family support, parenting resources, family cohesion, and strong parental monitoring. It is less …

Parenting And Child Competence: A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Moderating Influences Of Ethnicity, Family Socioeconomic Status, And Neighborhood Quality, Eric Curtis Dearing Jan 2001

Parenting And Child Competence: A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Moderating Influences Of Ethnicity, Family Socioeconomic Status, And Neighborhood Quality, Eric Curtis Dearing

Doctoral Dissertations

Although there is considerable evidence that parenting influences the behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children, the effects of some parenting behaviors may not be universal. In the present study, child ethnicity, family socioeconomic status, neighborhood quality (i.e., crime and median income), and cumulative risk (i.e., composite of family socioeconomic status and neighborhood quality) were modeled as potential moderators of associations between parenting (i.e., maternal sensitivity and traditional values) and four child outcomes (i.e., behavior problems, depression, loneliness, and school performance). Pathways of mediation for these parenting measures were also explored. In addition, age trends in neighborhood effects were …

Before Boulder: Professionalizing Clinical Psychology, 1896-1949, Ingrid Galusha Farreras Jan 2001

Before Boulder: Professionalizing Clinical Psychology, 1896-1949, Ingrid Galusha Farreras

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation documents the early history that led to the scientist-practitioner ("Boulder") model of training in clinical psychology. It uncovers pre-Boulder training guidelines and programs suggested by individuals and psychological organizations while exploring two themes: (1) the boundary issues between the budding clinical psychologists and the more established, elite mental health providers, particularly psychiatrists, between academic psychologists and these new clinical or applied psychologists, and between the various applied psychologists, and (2) how these training models (and organization membership requirements, codes of ethics, licensing and certification issues, and institutional accreditation) served as a way to professionalize clinical psychology, to improve …

Socialization Of Emotion Regulation: Use And Understanding Of Display Rules In East Indian Children., Vaishali Vidhatri. Raval Jan 2001

Socialization Of Emotion Regulation: Use And Understanding Of Display Rules In East Indian Children., Vaishali Vidhatri. Raval

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Children's ability to regulate their emotions is considered to be a major developmental task (Cole, Michel, and O'Donnell-Teti, 1994). However, very few studies have examined emotion regulation in cultures other than North America. This study investigated East Indian children's use and understanding of display rules in regulating anger, sadness, and physical pain. The relation between mothers' reactions to their children's expressions and children's regulatory decisions was also examined. Eighty-nine children between the ages of 5 and 9 years and their mothers were interviewed. Dyads were recruited from two middle-class Gujarati speaking communities located in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. …

Street Youth Suicide In Canada: A Qualitative Analysis., Sean Andrew. Kidd Jan 2001

Street Youth Suicide In Canada: A Qualitative Analysis., Sean Andrew. Kidd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was developed to address the problem of the high rates of suicidality found among street youth. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 80 street youth in agencies and on the streets of Toronto and Vancouver. Participants described the meanings suicide held for them and their understandings of the phenomenon of suicide among street youth. Qualitative analysis of the interviews revealed themes of worthlessness, loneliness, hopelessness, and most centrally the feeling of being 'trapped' that form the construct of suicide held by the participants. These idioms of distress were situated within the context of the street life that included social …

Stress, Identity Status, And Well-Being In Young Adults., Sharon. Jeyakumar Jan 2001

Stress, Identity Status, And Well-Being In Young Adults., Sharon. Jeyakumar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined identity achievement in the context of a stress and coping relation. Previous research has shown that identity status is related to self-esteem, emotional distress, capacity for intimacy, and cognitive advancement, with identity achievement being associated with more optimal states. Previous research has also shown that identity status is related to the social-cognitive orientations, or identity styles, that are utilized in encountering information, making decisions, and solving problems. These identity styles, in turn, have been found to be related to specific coping strategies an individual uses to deal with stress. Drawing from these findings, it was hypothesized that …

Attitudes Towards Suicide: A Structural Model And Its Relationship To Experience With Suicide., Michael David. Wallace Jan 2001

Attitudes Towards Suicide: A Structural Model And Its Relationship To Experience With Suicide., Michael David. Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two of the main approaches to understanding suicide are the sociological and the psychological. The former explains suicide as a consequence of social factors; the latter explains suicide as a consequence of individual factors. Through an examination of both social (i.e., participants' exposure to the suicidal ideas and behaviour of others) and individual (i.e., participants' own attitudes and experience with suicide) factors this study is one attempt to bridge these two approaches. A tripartite model of attitudes towards suicide was proposed, comprised of cognitive, affective, and conative components. A sample of 602 university students rated their attitudes towards suicide on …

Children's Word-Finding Test (Revised): Diagnostic Utility, Developmental Influences, And Construct Dimensions In A Heterogeneous Clinic-Referred Sample., Rosemary Susan. Waxman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present work examined the clinical utility, and construct dimensions of the Children's Word Finding Test (Revised; CWFT-R) within a developmental framework. Participants consisted of 361 diagnostically heterogeneous children between the ages 6 through 8 years inclusive who were assessed on a comprehensive neuropsychological battery of tests in the Windsor-Detroit region. CWFT-R performance of the 7- and 8-year-old clinic-referred children was compared to a 7- and 8-year-old sample of normal children, who had been utilized in previous research. Using partial correlations to control for age effects, the data of the 361 clinic-referred children were subjected to Principal Components Analysis, which …

Clinical Memory Subtypes In Hiv-1 Infection: A Novel Approach., Shemira. Murji Jan 2001

Clinical Memory Subtypes In Hiv-1 Infection: A Novel Approach., Shemira. Murji

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study sought to delineate empirically derived memory subtypes using the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT; Delis, Kramer, Kaplan, & Ober, 1987) in a sample of HIV-1 infected adults (N = 154). First, confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate eight models of the CVLT structure suggested by Wiegner and Donders (1999). A four-factor model, consisting of Attention Span, Learning Efficiency, Delayed Recall, and Inaccurate Recall appeared to be the best fitting model. Next, variables with the highest factor loadings from the model were entered in a two-stage cluster analysis. Four reliable CVLT clusters or subtypes were identified: Normal, …

The Role Of Memory Self-Efficacy In Memory Performance And Performance Estimation Accuracy In Old Age, Gregory Dennis Wells Jan 2001

The Role Of Memory Self-Efficacy In Memory Performance And Performance Estimation Accuracy In Old Age, Gregory Dennis Wells

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study explored several issues regarding memory self-efficacy (MSE) in old age. There were two specific goals. The first was to examine whether the relationship between MSE and memory performance is more accurately described as curvilinear rather than linear, with moderate levels of MSE being most conducive to performance. The second goal was to investigate whether interactive relationships between MSE and other components of metamemory are present in the prediction of memory performance and the accuracy of memory performance estimates. Measures of MSE, memory knowledge, strategy use, memory performance, and performance estimation accuracy were obtained for 95 community dwelling …
