Health And Lifestyle Among Ute Native American Elders, Laura L. Prestwich

A basic health and lifestyle questionnaire was given to a convenience sample of 103 Ute elders, age 50 and older. Fifty-three percent reported being diagnosed with diabetes. The mean BMI (body mass index) was 33.31 (SD=8.72). For descriptive purposes, BMI was divided into three categories: less than 25, 25-29.99, 30 or above. Eleven percent were in the BMI category of less than 25. Thirty percent of Ute elders reported a BMI between 25-29.99. Fifty two percent had a BMI of 30 or above. Among healthcare professionals, there is little research on health promotion and health-promoting practices, particularly advanced practice nurses (APN's) The literature also reveals a paucity of research on the counseling practices of APN's. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to examine the relationships between selected variables, derived from Pender's revised Health Promotion Model (1996), and the degree to which they explain advanced practice nurses' current practice of health-promoting behaviors from a random sample of APN's (N = 357). The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate health-promoting lifestyle practices and correlate these to self identified factors that may limit health promotion activity of frontier rural elders living in Nevada. Pender's Health Promotion Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The sample included 114 participants that were aged 65 and older from locations in Nevada counties that qualify as frontier (population less than 6/square mile). Participants completed a two part self-administered questionnaire, the Health-Promotion Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) and the revised Elderly Health Care Needs Questionnaire (EHCNQ). This research estimates the life expectancy of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in Utah. We create gender-specific life tables for four groups: total Utah, active LDS, less-active LDS, and non-LDS. Male life tables are based on data from 1991-1995; female life tables are based on data from 1994-1998. Life expectancy at birth is 75 years for all utah males, 79.8 years for active LDS Utah males, 71.6 years for less active LDS Utah males, and 71.5 years for non-LDS Utah males. Environmental, health and safety management approaches and practices at small colleges are investigated. Awareness of environmental, health and safety initiatives among colleges is also investigated. Surveys were distributed to twelve colleges that accepted an invitation to participate in this study. The colleges were divided into two groups: an experimental group that consisted of small colleges that had made an envirpnmental claim or commitment and a control group that consisted of small colleges that were not known to have made such a claim or commitment.
