Effects Of Social Skills Training Program Designed To Improve The Social Status Of Isolated And Rejected Children, Mariella Giuffra Zapatero
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a social skills training program designed to improve the social status of isolated and rejected children. Subjects were fourth and fifth grade students from two different elementary schools. One school served as the control group and the other one was the experimental group.;The sample consisted of 91 identified students from both schools. A nonequivalent control group research design was used. Pre- and posttest information was gathered using the Piers-Harris Self-Perception Questionnaire, Achenbach's Teacher's Report Form, and Sociogram. Dependent variables were children's self-perception, level of popularity, level of happiness, and …

Occurrence, Fate And Effects Of Polychlorinated Terphenyls In An Estuarine Environment, Kathryn Gallagher
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Aroclor 5432, a mixture of polychlorinated terphenyls (PCT), was detected in sediment and several biological compartments including: saltmarsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), American oysters (Crassostrea virginica), red-jointed fiddler crabs (Uca minax), wharf crabs (Sesarma reticulatum) and mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus) collected from Tabbs Creek. This tidal creek is located in the southern Chesapeake Bay region. Species from several phyla were selected in order to examine PCT accumulation in physiologically and ecologically different organisms. In general, PCT concentrations in sediment and biota decreased with distance downstream from the PCT outfall. The organism with the highest mean concentration (18,300 &\mu&g/kg dry weight) was the …

Beam Dynamics In The Cebaf Superconducting Cavities, Zenghai Li
Beam Dynamics In The Cebaf Superconducting Cavities, Zenghai Li
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This work is a study of beam dynamics in the CEBAF superconducting cavities under the influence of the fields generated by externally applied RF and beam particles.;A full 3-D modeling of the CEBAF 5-cell superconducting cavity is carried out. Details of the modeling with MAFIA are discussed. Multipole fields due to the asymmetric couplers are studied by means of 3-D Fourier transforms. The cavity steering and focusing of the multipole fields are studied. Experimental measurements of these effects are performed to validate the modeling. Evaluation of the cavity misalignment is discussed. The emittance degradation effects in the CEBAF superconducting linacs …

Coping Strategies Of Depressed And Nondepressed Adolescents, Marcia A. Kennedy
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences in the regulation of sad affect between depressed and nondepressed adolescents and between younger (12 years to 15 years, 6 months) and older adolescents (15 years, 7 months to 18 years). Using an information processing perspective, this study focused on several steps involved in emotion regulation including the generation, evaluation, and reported use of coping strategies.;Participants included 38 male students, 12 to 18 years of age, attending public middle and high schools in Chesapeake, Virginia. Participants were presented with two scenarios designed to evoke feelings of sadness. They …
Acid Dissociation Of Chloroguaiacols And Ph Dependent Sorption To Estuarine Sediments, Jennifer Lisa Gundersen
Acid Dissociation Of Chloroguaiacols And Ph Dependent Sorption To Estuarine Sediments, Jennifer Lisa Gundersen
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Chloroguaiacols are common components of bleached kraft pulp mill effluent known to bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, and sorb onto particulate material and sediments. Ionization properties of the chloroguaiacols must be known in order to explain their sorptive behavior in aquatic systems. to obtain this information, thermodynamic acid dissociation constants (p&K\sb{lcub}\rm a{rcub})& of guaiacol (o-methoxyphenol) and nine chloroguaiacols have been determined by spectrophotometric methods. These experimental p&K\sb{lcub}\rm a{rcub}& values have been compared with literature values, values predicted by the Hammett equation and predictions by quantum chemical calculations using MOPAC 6.0 with AM1 and MNDO Hamiltonian operators. Experimental and predicted acidities were …

Self-Concept, Racial Identity Development And The Perception Of The Graduate And Professional Educational Experience Among African-American Female College Students Planning To Pursue Advanced Degrees: A Correlational Study, Wanda Shnita Mitchell
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship among self-concept, racial identity development, and perceptions of the graduate and professional educational experience of African American female college students planning to pursue advanced degrees. The researcher explored the relationship among the factors to determine if they were predictive of the pursuit of advanced degrees among African American female college students. The investigation would provide counselors, educators, and administrators with information which could positively impact the enrollment and retention of African American women in advanced degree programs.;A sample of 85 graduating African American female college seniors at a very selective, …

Academic Freedom And Faculty Careers: A Case Study Of Four Nobel Laureate Exiles, 1930-1940, Timothy Dale Norton
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this historical study was to evaluate the consequences that the politically-determined conventions of academic freedom in Germany and in the United States had on the careers of four elite scientists before and after their emigration resulting from the threats of Nazism. This problem consisted of three distinct conceptual parts: (1) academic freedom, as a concept, (2) the political conventions of academic freedom within pre-World War II Germany and within pre- and World War II America, and (3) the effect that these definitions had on the careers of Albert Einstein, James Franck, Otto Meyerhof, and Otto Stern. The …

The Hidden Curriculum Of The Video Teleconference (Vtc) Classroom And Its Implications For The University Of The Twenty-First Century, Mary Webb Stout
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Old Dominion University's Peninsula Center, in Hampton, Virginia, was the location for an ethnographic case study about the urban "distributed university" centers that provided instruction via video teleconference (VTC). Graduate engineers attended VTC classes at the Peninsula Center originating from five Virginia universities as part of the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program.;The purpose of this study was to describe VTC instruction and identify aspects that impacted on student learning, faculty teaching, and the socio-cultural environment. Fifty-one interviews and two months of observations were conducted during the Spring term, 1993.;Benson Snyder's (1971) ethnographic case study at MIT, described in The Hidden Curriculum, …
Studies On Processes Controlling The Input Of Agricultural Chemicals In Groundwater To Surface Waters, Edward Laurence Libelo
Studies On Processes Controlling The Input Of Agricultural Chemicals In Groundwater To Surface Waters, Edward Laurence Libelo
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation describes several studies of groundwater quality, the fate and transport of nutrients and atrazine in groundwater systems and physical processes at the sediment-water interface which impact on groundwater discharge. Groundwater monitoring wells were installed at the Goodwins Island and Catlett Island NERRS sites in Virginia and agricultural, suburban and forest land use sites in the York and James River Basins. Groundwater was analyzed for nutrients, pH, salinity and trace organics. Shoreline land use, associated nutrient loading and an estimate of total groundwater flux suggest that groundwater contributes up to 30% of the total nitrogen input to the Chesapeake …
