Leaving Parental Homes In Canada: An Examination Of Gender, Family And Culture, Zhihong Zhao Jan 1995

Leaving Parental Homes In Canada: An Examination Of Gender, Family And Culture, Zhihong Zhao

Digitized Theses

This dissertation first explores a theoretical synthesis for the home-leaving of young adults in Canada. It proposes that home-leaving decisions are made at the family level, instead of at the individual level. While young adults may base their considerations concerning their living arrangements primarily on their own self-interest, parents are more likely to consider not only their own interests but also the best interests of their children. Young adults from social groups with different levels of familism will also have different patterns of home-leaving.;The analysis involves the life table and the proportional hazards models, as well as logistic regression, using …

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Urea Cycle Enzyme Genes In The Liver Of Rana Catesbeiana Tadpoles During Spontaneous And Thyroid Hormone-Induced Metamorphosis, Yuqing Eugene Chen Jan 1995

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Urea Cycle Enzyme Genes In The Liver Of Rana Catesbeiana Tadpoles During Spontaneous And Thyroid Hormone-Induced Metamorphosis, Yuqing Eugene Chen

Digitized Theses

The ornithine urea cycle enzymes, carbamyl phosphate synthetase (CPS-1), ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) and arginase, are liver-specific proteins. Their expression is coordinately activated during the metamorphosis of the Rana catesbeiana tadpole by thyroid hormone (TH), and their presence is critical for the shift of this amphibian from an aquatic, ammonotelic larva into a terrestrial, ureotelic adult. My studies were focused on analyzing the transcriptional regulation of the genes encoding these urea cycle enzymes and determining whether these genes were upregulated directly or indirectly by TH. With this thought in mind, I isolated and characterized the sequences in the promoter regions of …

An Examination Of Whether Irony And Sarcasm Are Different Terms For The Same Psychological Construct, Christopher James Lee Jan 1995

An Examination Of Whether Irony And Sarcasm Are Different Terms For The Same Psychological Construct, Christopher James Lee

Digitized Theses

Researchers have studied counterfactual statements, such as "There's not a cloud in the sky!" uttered during a violent thunderstorm, both as instances of irony (Jorgensen, Miller & Sperber, 1984; Kreuz & Glucksberg, 1989; Katz & Lee, 1993) and as instances of sarcasm (Gibbs, 1986; Kreuz & Glucksberg, 1989). It is not surprising that some terms are used inconsistently in a young field of investigation such as the psycholinguistics of irony and sarcasm. However. the inconsistent use of the terms irony and sarcasm across different empirical studies is problematic when research participants are asked to judge whether or not counterfactual statements …

Evolutionary Models Of Market Behavior, Guo Ying Luo Jan 1995

Evolutionary Models Of Market Behavior, Guo Ying Luo

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of three evolutionary models examining market behavior.;Profit maximization is the usual prerequisite for achievement of competition. However, for a long time it has been thought that this principle of profit maximization can be replaced by natural selection. In an evolutionary model of an industry, where firms' outputs are chosen randomly, where entry occurs with no motivation and where exit occurs when a firm's wealth becomes negative, the first paper shows that the industry converges in probability to a perfectly competitive equilibrium as firms get infinitesimally small relative to the market, as the entry fixed costs get sufficiently …

Image Correlation Spectroscopy: Development And Application To Studies Of Pdgf Receptor Distributions, Paul William Wiseman Jan 1995

Image Correlation Spectroscopy: Development And Application To Studies Of Pdgf Receptor Distributions, Paul William Wiseman

Digitized Theses

Aggregation of macromolecular plasma membrane receptors following ligand binding is hypothesized to be the initial step in signal transduction in cellular systems. Quantitative measurement of receptor distributions on cell surfaces is integral for elucidating the complicated mechanisms involved in transduction of chemical signals across the cells membrane. Scanning fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (S-FCS) has been used successfully to perform quantitative measurements of receptor densities and aggregate sizes. However, these measurements take a great deal of time, and require specialized equipment to implement. Here, image correlation spectroscopy (ICS) is introduced as a novel extension of scanning fluorescence correlation spectroscopy that improves on …

The Interaction Of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (Tsh), Insulin-Like Growth Factors (Igfs), And Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins (Igfpbs) In The Regulation Of The Synthesis And Secretion Of Thyroid Hormones By Cultured Sheep Thyroid Cells, Jia Fang Wang Jan 1995

The Interaction Of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (Tsh), Insulin-Like Growth Factors (Igfs), And Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins (Igfpbs) In The Regulation Of The Synthesis And Secretion Of Thyroid Hormones By Cultured Sheep Thyroid Cells, Jia Fang Wang

Digitized Theses

Thyroid growth and function are regulated by TSH in synergy with other hormones, growth factors, and neurotransmitters. Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), which have insulin-like effects on metabolism and regulate cell growth and function, are synthesized and secreted by thyroid cells. IGFs are associated with their specific binding proteins (IGFBPs), which not only carry and store IGFs in body fluids but also modulate the biological function of IGFs. Previous studies found that both IGFs and IGFBPs participated in the regulation of the growth of thyroid cells.;This study has further examined the biological function of IGFs and IGFBPs in the regulation of …

An Investigation Of Value Accessibility And Its Role In The Value-Attitude Relationship, Rae Sidney Gilchrist Jan 1995

An Investigation Of Value Accessibility And Its Role In The Value-Attitude Relationship, Rae Sidney Gilchrist

Digitized Theses

The primary thesis of this research is that values can causally influence attitudes, and that one mechanism of that influence involves value accessibility, or the ease with which values can be accessed from memory. Three studies are reported that address questions concerning the nature of value accessibility and its role in the value-attitude relationship.;A significant positive relationship was found to exist between the importance people ascribe to various values and the speed with which they can indicate the perceived importance of these values. This was interpreted to mean that response latencies constitute a valid measure of value accessibility.;It was further …

Joint Venture Ownership Structure And Performance: Japanese Joint Ventures In Asia, Shigefumi Makino Jan 1995

Joint Venture Ownership Structure And Performance: Japanese Joint Ventures In Asia, Shigefumi Makino

Digitized Theses

This study examines the relationship between the ownership structure of international joint ventures (IJVs) and their performance. This under-researched relationship was examined using a JV ownership structure typology newly developed in this study. Four distinct JV ownership structures were identified based on both partner nationality and affiliation: Intrafirm JVs--those JVs formed between affiliated Japanese firms; Cross-national DJVs--those JVs formed between unaffiliated Japanese firms; Traditional IJVs-those JVs formed between Japanese and local firms; and Trinational IJVs--those JVs formed between Japanese and third-country based firms. Two primary hypotheses were tested: (1) a JV ownership structure is chosen primarily on the basis of …

Heterological Rhetoric: Textual Waste In "The Anatomy Of Melancholy", Robert Grant Williams Jan 1995

Heterological Rhetoric: Textual Waste In "The Anatomy Of Melancholy", Robert Grant Williams

Digitized Theses

This dissertation argues that Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy generates unmanageable rhetoric or what I call textual waste. Whereas many premodern systems take as their fundamental template the classical body and, therefore, methodically exclude from their homogeneous, functional field the heterogeneous, The Anatomy challenges the integrity of Renaissance systematicity by disfiguring and abjecting the classical body. Examining the complex correlations between medical and rhetorical discourses, economies concerned with regulating a system, this study demonstrates how Burton deviates from a rhetorical economy that handles the text as if each part efficiently functioned in an overall corporeal order. The Anatomy is …

A Logic For Object-Oriented Databases, Machmudin Junus Jan 1995

A Logic For Object-Oriented Databases, Machmudin Junus

Digitized Theses

When E. F. Codd {dollar}\lbrack{dollar}Codd70{dollar}\rbrack{dollar} designed relational databases, he made use of mathematical logic concerning Predicate Calculus. However, when object-oriented databases were designed, there was no such support from any established mathematical logic.;In this thesis, we present a logic suitable for reasoning about object-oriented database systems. This logic is the result of the modification of F-logic {dollar}\lbrack{dollar}KifLa89, KifLaWu90{dollar}\rbrack.{dollar} The main difference between our proposed logic and F-logic, is the way our logic treats class objects and instance objects.;Our designed logic has the ability to represent: object identities, attributes, methods, classes, class hierarchies and inheritance. Similar to F-logic, the designed logic …

Structural Studies On Silver(I) Metallothionein, Ziqi Gui Jan 1995

Structural Studies On Silver(I) Metallothionein, Ziqi Gui

Digitized Theses

Metallothioneins (MT) are a class of low molecular weight, cysteine rich proteins in almost all living things. These proteins have been found to bind a wide range of metals both in vivo and in vitro due to the unusually high cysteinyl sulfur content. The metallothioneins are believed to possess the ability to store and transport essential metals, such as Zn(II) and Cu(I), and also to detoxify toxic metals, such as Cd(II) and Hg(II). However, the precise physiological functions of these proteins still remain unclear to date. As silver(I)-metallothioneins have shown different stoichiometric ratios of Ag:MT from Zn(II)- and Cd(II)-metallothioneins in …

Electrical conductivity measurements demonstrated that the samples were comparable to those used in other laboratories. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the cations are located on a hexagonal sublattice, but details of the anion sublattice could not be resolved, because of the low X-ray scattering factor of {dollar}\rm O\sp{lcub}2-{rcub}.{dollar};The compositional dependence of the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal structure of the {dollar}\beta{dollar}-{dollar}\rm (Bi\sb2O\sb3)\sb{lcub}1-x{rcub}(SrO)\sb{lcub}x{rcub}{dollar} phase, which was determined at {dollar}27\sp\circ\rm C{dollar} using …

The Putative Role Of Fatty Acids In The Activation Of Trehalose Synthesis In The Fat Body Of The Cockroach Periplaneta Americana L, Irshad Ali Jan 1995

The Putative Role Of Fatty Acids In The Activation Of Trehalose Synthesis In The Fat Body Of The Cockroach Periplaneta Americana L, Irshad Ali

Digitized Theses

Hypertrehalosemic hormones produced by the corpus cardiacum increase the concentration of several fatty acids in cockroach fat body trophocytes. The phospholipase A{dollar}\sb2{dollar} (PLA{dollar}\sb2){dollar} activator melittin has a similar effect. The fatty acids include palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acid. The hormone mediated release of these fatty acids is blocked by the PLA{dollar}\sb2{dollar} inhibitors mepacrine and {dollar}\rho{dollar}-bromophenacyl bromide. These observations suggest that hormonal release of fatty acids, may be due to the activation of PLA{dollar}\sb2.{dollar};The increase in non-esterified fatty acids appears to be linked to the increase in trehalose efflux since sugar efflux is stimulated by stearic, oleic, linoleic and arachidonic …

Personality-Oriented Job Analysis, Maryann Frances Fraboni

Digitized Theses

The purpose of the present research was to develop a personality-oriented job analysis measure that could be used to identify non-cognitive person attitudes relevant to a given job. One application of this new job analysis measure could be to use it within a person-job (P-J) fit predictive framework.;Three studies were conducted. The first study was aimed at testing an initial item pool developed for the personality-oriented job analysis measure and selecting the best items for each scale. The job analysis measure was constructed to assess (a) 15 personality traits measured by the Jackson Personality Inventory (Jackson, 1994) and (b) 12 …

Genome Organization, Replication And Movement Of Foxtail Mosaic Virus, Michele Rouleau Jan 1995

Genome Organization, Replication And Movement Of Foxtail Mosaic Virus, Michele Rouleau

Digitized Theses

Foxtail mosaic virus (FMV) is a member of the potexvirus family which infects primarily monocotyledonous plants. Its flexuous filamentous particles are 500 nm long and consist of a messenger sense RNA encapsidated by a single type of coat protein. We have determined the nucleotide sequence of the FMV gRNA as well as the organization of its coding sequences. The gRNA is 6151 nucleotides long and contains five major open reading frames (ORF). The amino acid sequences of the putative proteins are closely related to homologous proteins of other sequenced potexviruses.;A procedure for the partial purification of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase …

Syntax-Directed Interpretation Of Visual Languages, Shane Denis Dunne Jan 1995

Syntax-Directed Interpretation Of Visual Languages, Shane Denis Dunne

Digitized Theses

Recent trends suggest that it will soon be practical to implement graphical user interfaces wherein a large part of the communication between human and computer will take the form of structured graphics, i.e., diagrams, notations, etc., which have come to be called "visual languages" in the literature. This thesis argues that implementation of such interfaces will be greatly facilitated by the development and use of syntax-directed translation methods for visual languages, and the embodiment of such methods in automated tools for application development, as has been done for compilers. An algebraic formalism to express syntax and semantics for visual languages …

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling Jan 1995

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling

Digitized Theses

The dynamic response of guyed masts excited by wind turbulence is examined in this study using numerical methods. Specifically, the report addresses two main subject areas: the development of a simplified dynamic analysis method for guyed masts, and an investigation of the nonlinear dynamic response characteristics of guys and guyed masts.;A simplified patch load analysis method is proposed which reliably estimates the dynamic response of a wide variety of guyed masts. A series of static load patterns, or patch loads, are used to replicate the effects of wind gusts. Empirical scaling factors account for mast geometry and structural properties.;The proposed …

La Voix Enfantine De L'Apres-60: Refus Du Double Normatif, Recherche Du Double Marginal, Marie-Diane Tuyet-Mai Clarke

Digitized Theses

Commitment And Utopia: A Liberation Theology Approach To John Dos Passos, Flannery O'Connor, And Thomas Pynchon, James William Horton Jan 1995

Commitment And Utopia: A Liberation Theology Approach To John Dos Passos, Flannery O'Connor, And Thomas Pynchon, James William Horton

Digitized Theses

My intent in this work is to see what consequences can be derived from looking from the perspective of Christianity (especially, liberation theology) at three very different writers: John Dos Passos, Flannery O'Connor, and Thomas Pynchon. Having taken this stance, I will be viewing one major work of each of these three writers as work which deals with the nature of human commitment and its relationship to a stated or implied utopia. My intention is to perform a religious and ideological reading of the three authors, and to see what the implications are of liberation theology for literature in an …

Contextualism And Nonlocality In Quantum Mechanics, Michael William Kernaghan Jan 1995

Contextualism And Nonlocality In Quantum Mechanics, Michael William Kernaghan

Digitized Theses

I describe the conceptual problems associated with the Kochen-Specker theorem including the presuppositions of the theorem and plausible interpretations of the conclusions motivated by the theorem. I describe an idealized quantum system which demonstrates both the Kochen-Specker theorem and the Bell argument for nonlocality. I present new findings about the mathematical structures which support a proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem.

A Test Of The Effects Of Leadership Style And Task Feedback On Self-Efficacy, Performance Quality And Attitudes, Christine M. Shea Jan 1995

A Test Of The Effects Of Leadership Style And Task Feedback On Self-Efficacy, Performance Quality And Attitudes, Christine M. Shea

Digitized Theses

The present study examined the effect of three leadership styles (i.e., charismatic, structuring and considerate) and three feedback conditions (i.e., internal inspection, external inspection and no feedback) on individual performance on a manufacturing task and on attitudes towards the task and the leader.;One hundred and forty eight graduate business students were randomly assigned to one of three leadership conditions and one of three feedback conditions. They then participated in an exercise which required them to build four electrical wiring harnesses and complete a series of questionnaires. The questionnaires measured their self-efficacy before each trial and their attitude towards the task …

Diffusive And Advective-Diffusive Transport Through Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Kazem Badv Jan 1995

Diffusive And Advective-Diffusive Transport Through Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Kazem Badv

Digitized Theses

This thesis describes a series of laboratory experiments together with the theoretical analysis of NaCl migration through single and double layer soil systems for a range of physical and chemical characteristics. The soil materials were tested under saturated and unsaturated (gravity drainage) conditions. The small and large scale apparatus were designed so that soil samples could be tested for "diffusive" and "advective-diffusive" migration.;The experiments examining NaCl diffusion through the saturated fine sand and clayey silt were used to obtain the reference diffusion coefficients for the individual types of soil. The fine sand and clayey silt were then used in a …

Electronic Structure Of Gold-Silver Bimetallics, Arthur Bzowski Jan 1995

Electronic Structure Of Gold-Silver Bimetallics, Arthur Bzowski

Digitized Theses

The main thrust of this thesis concerns studies of the electronic structure of Au-Ag bimetallic materials, both in bulk alloys and in metallic overlayers on Ru(001). First, a series of bulk Au-Ag alloys: Au{dollar}\rm\sb{lcub}0.75{rcub}Ag\sb{lcub}0.25{rcub},\ Au\sb{lcub}0.67{rcub}Ag\sb{lcub}0.33{rcub},\ Au\sb{lcub}0.50{rcub}Ag\sb{lcub}0.50{rcub},\ Au\sb{lcub}0.25{rcub}Ag\sb{lcub}0.95{rcub},\ and\ Au\sb{lcub}0.05{rcub}Ag\sb{lcub}0.95{rcub}{dollar} has been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). It is found that in alloys with {dollar}>{dollar}50% atomic Au, the alloy d-band width narrows little relative to that of pure Au; however at 50% (and less) atomic Au concentration, the widths of the Au-Ag alloy d-band are much smaller than that …

A Programming Model For Optimism, Crispin Cowan Jan 1995

A Programming Model For Optimism, Crispin Cowan

Digitized Theses

Technological advances are increasing the throughput of most aspects of computing systems. However, latency is being held back by the speed of light, particularly in distributed systems. Optimistic algorithms that "guess" the results of operations and proceed in parallel with confirmation of the guess are an effective way to hide the latency of slow operations with predictable outcomes. Optimism is used in concurrency control and distributed simulation systems, but is not generally used. Optimistic algorithms are difficult to write because of the necessity for checkpointing, rollback, and dependency tracking. This thesis presents a set of primitives called HOPE that simplifies …

Synchronization Expressions In Parallel Programming Languages, Lifu Guo Jan 1995

Synchronization Expressions In Parallel Programming Languages, Lifu Guo

Digitized Theses

In this thesis, we first review current trends in the areas related to parallel programming languages. By reviewing data-parallel and control-parallel paradigms, parallelizing compilers and parallel programming languages, we demonstrate the necessity of developing high-level parallel programming languages.;Synchronization is an essential part of parallel processing. However, many synchronization mechanisms currently used in parallel programming languages are at too low a level to be compatible with the other constructs of high-level languages. We propose and develop new constructs for synchronization termed "synchronization expressions". These new constructs relieve programmers of the burden of imposing synchronization, requiring them only to specify the necessary …

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this project was to study the effect of aging on the regulation of Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} by cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and its potential contribution to the age-related alterations in myocardial contractile performance in Fischer 344 rats.;In cardiac membranes enriched in SR (MSR) and its light (LSR) and heavy (HSR) subfractions fractionated by a sucrose density gradient, the rate of ATP-supported and oxalate-facilitated Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} uptake was significantly reduced (24-50%) in the aged (26-30 months old) compared with that of the adult rats (6-8 months old). With aging, the Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar}-stimulated phosphoenzyme of the Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}2+{rcub}{dollar} pumps was reduced in MSR, LSR …

Intermolecular Forces And Statistical Mechanics Of Liquids, Maria Koulis Jan 1995

Intermolecular Forces And Statistical Mechanics Of Liquids, Maria Koulis

Digitized Theses

This research is involved with the construction of potential energy models for the interaction of closed shell atoms and/or molecules and with the study of the thermodynamic properties of pure liquids and liquid mixtures, through the use of statistical mechanical perturbation theory.;The previously developed Exchange-Coulomb potential energy model for the interaction of closed shell atoms is modified to correct its unphysical behaviour for small interspecies distances and so that it is applicable for interactions involving molecules. The new potential energy model is based on using the Heitler-London energy to represent the repulsive part, and a damped and overall corrected dispersion …

Structural Basis For Human Anti-Dna Antibody Specificity, Mahmoud Mahmoudi Jan 1995

Structural Basis For Human Anti-Dna Antibody Specificity, Mahmoud Mahmoudi

Digitized Theses

Anti-DNA antibodies are hallmarks of SLE both in human and inbred lupus prone mice. The role of these antibodies in disease pathogenesis, particularly in glomerulonephritis has been documented. It is now well accepted that the genetic potential to generate anti-DNA antibodies also exists in the normal B cell immune repertoire. This genetic potential has been revealed by detection of anti-DNA antibodies in serum of normal individuals and by immortalizing DNA reactive B cells as hybridomas and as transformed cell lines. There is growing evidence that anti-DNA antibodies from the normal B cell repertoire and disease-associated anti-DNA antibodies share V region …

Commercial Integrity, Roles And Object-Orientation, Matunda Nyanchama Jan 1995

Commercial Integrity, Roles And Object-Orientation, Matunda Nyanchama

Digitized Theses

This thesis presents a study of realizing commercial security, as defined in the Clark and Wilson Model (CW87), using Object-Oriented (O-O) concepts.;Role-based security is implied in the Clark and Wilson model in which specified operations are grouped to compose roles. This approach to protection is suitable for applications involving large numbers of users with overlapping user requirements and/or where there is a large number of objects. It presents a flexible (hence adaptive) means for enforcing differing ranges of security policies. It enforces the principle of least privilege, hence minimizing the risk of Trojan horse attacks.;Consequently, in part, this work focuses …
