The Effects Of Relaxation Exercises On Young Persons With Moderate Asthma, Robert Edward Obrecht
Dissertations
This experiment studied the acute and cumulative effects of relaxation exercises on young persons (mean age 11.4 years) with moderate asthma. In order to assess the acute effects of relaxation, treatment group subjects were instructed to perform relaxation exercises immediately before and during methacholine inhalation challenge procedures that produced a 20% reduction in forced expiratory volume in one-second (FEXA,). The control group subjects were not taught the relaxation exercises, but still underwent the methacholine challenges. In order to assess the cumulative effects of the treatment group subjects practicing relaxation exercises twice daily at home for 10-weeks, they were instructed to …

Spies Like Us? : An Analysis Of Six 1980s Spy Films And The Images They Presented About The Cold War, Jason Bologna
Honors Theses
"Let us not be deceived--we are today in the midst of a cold war. Our enemies are to be found abroad and at home. Let us never forget this: Our unrest is the heart of their success. The peace of the world is the hope and goal of our political system; it is the despair and defeat of those who stand against us" (Platt 48) . This passage was part of a speech delivered by Bernard M. Baruch before the South Carolina state legislature on April 16, 1947. The speech is significant because in using the term 'cold war,' Baruch …

This investigation encompasses his first appearance in 1934's The Wise Little Hen to his later appearances in the late fifties and early sixties. Part of this study will focus on discovering just what forms of humor were used and to establish working definitions for exaggeration, understatement, black humor, and reversal and see how they function in the Donald Duck cartoon.
In addition, the character of Donald will be examined to see how he is used as a solitary …

Flow And Fantasy: An Exploration Of Role-Playing Games, Andrew Roy

This chapter lays out the conceptual foundation that one must possess in order to examine the role-playing game phenomenon. First. I will present what has been done in the scholarly community on rpgs . This section will also serve as a justification for this study. In the second section, I will examine the games themselves , explaining their form and history to the reader.
Considering the massive popular impact that roleplaying games have had over the last two decades , there is remarkably little scholarship on them . Scanning across anthropological and sociological literature, one can find almost nothing that …
Dancing On Razor Wire: Caring To Write And Writing To Care In A Women's Prison, Kathe Penfield Simons
Dancing On Razor Wire: Caring To Write And Writing To Care In A Women's Prison, Kathe Penfield Simons
Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative study investigates the writing of women in prison as a tool to care for themselves and others. The inmates participated in a student-centered, socially contextualized, process writing class whereby they could write for their own purposes, and share and publish their writing. The study presents case studies of two women who were also involved in a peer-tutoring program (one serving as the tutor for the other) and who used their literacies extensively on their own time outside of the classroom.
Many of our nation's inmates are considered illiterate by standardized, school-based measures. Some participate in correctional education programs …

The Series Romance: The Changing Representation Of Gender Relationships Within A Popular Genre, Lilybeth M. Mayhew
The Series Romance: The Changing Representation Of Gender Relationships Within A Popular Genre, Lilybeth M. Mayhew
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The continued popularity of series romances, read privately for pleasure, poses a problem for those who study such texts in the public, institutional world of the university. Feminists, students of cultural studies, and theorists of popular culture, attempt to map the ideologies, discourses, psychoanalytic readings, and spaces for resistance within the romance. Other researchers and scholars use ethnography to discover what private pleasures readers say they get from the texts. Always there is this tension between the public and the private, both inwho says what about the popular romance, and in what the romance says about the social practices of …

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard
Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard
Honors Theses
It is important to create an accepting environment for children to begin to appreciate faith in God. Adults need to recognize that even though children may not be able to talk about God, they do have an ability to think about and appreciate God (Lester 174). Because children have an active imagination and are just beginning to develop some logic skills, this is an easy segue for a child to understand many of the stories and parables that adults may discount. When children ask questions, it is important to get them to think through the issue and to provide some …
