The Effect Of Fill Patterns On Graphical Interpretation And Decision Making, Robert D. Helgeson, Robert A. Moriarty Sep 1993

The Effect Of Fill Patterns On Graphical Interpretation And Decision Making, Robert D. Helgeson, Robert A. Moriarty

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated if decision makers could be mislead by computer generated vertical bar graphs that contained varying intensities of fill patterns. It also investigated if the misleading influence of vertical bar graphs caused any differences in interpretation or decision making. A literature review revealed a need to test bar graphs with varying intensities of fill patterns in a controlled environment. By creating vertical bar graphs that use fill patterns, stronger impressions may be produced on the decision maker which may lead to misinterpretations of the underlying data. An experiment was conducted on 182 mid to upper level Department of …

Research And Development Project Selection Tools: Probing Wright Laboratory's Project Selection Methods And Decision Criteria Using The Lateral Airfoil Concept, James E. Barger Sep 1993

Research And Development Project Selection Tools: Probing Wright Laboratory's Project Selection Methods And Decision Criteria Using The Lateral Airfoil Concept, James E. Barger

Theses and Dissertations

This research accomplished three major tasks. First it examined familiarity and usage rates for fifteen published R&D project selection methods in the context of a larger general issue, the Air Force's ability to develop and exploit technology. Wright Laboratory served as the focus for the research effort and displayed a greater tendency to use formal methods in 1993 than was shown in prior research. The laboratory's overall preference for simpler models like Checklist, Scoring, and Sorting led to a recommendation that authors familiar with the other techniques communicate them in engineering and management vernacular. Secondly, the study introduced a technological …

Decision Making Environments In The Meeting Planning Industry, Chia-Mei Johanna Liu Jan 1993

Decision Making Environments In The Meeting Planning Industry, Chia-Mei Johanna Liu

Theses

This was a pilot study on the decision making environments in the meeting planning industry. A critical incident questionnaire which was developed by Boone & Kilmann (1988) and later used by Janet Barnard (1992) in her research "Decision Environments of Small Firms" was adapted. The questionnaires were mailed to 210 samples which were randomly chosen from members of Meeting Planners International in four states, and there were 30 valid responses received. Among those 30 respondents, the majority (70%) are female meeting planners. Most of the participants are over 30 years old, and their years of experience in the meeting planning …

Executive Decision Making During A Crisis: Burger King Reacts To Hurricane Andrew, Sue M. Scaglione Jan 1993

Executive Decision Making During A Crisis: Burger King Reacts To Hurricane Andrew, Sue M. Scaglione

Honors Capstones

This paper investigates the decision making practices of the Burger King Corporation after the near destruction of its world headquarters in Miami, Florida by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Seven executives were personally interviewed five months after the hurricane. Each were asked the same set of questions to determine: the pathway of decisions, to test the theories of centralized decision making vs. decentralized decision making, to test the structure of the organization on decision making, and to test the applicability of the five steps of decision making. Burger King made decisions based on the problem. The organization is decentralized, allowing for …

The Effect Of A Semester Unit Of Study On Ethical Issues In Nursing On A Group Of Practising Registered Nurses, E. C. Ambrose Jan 1993

The Effect Of A Semester Unit Of Study On Ethical Issues In Nursing On A Group Of Practising Registered Nurses, E. C. Ambrose

Theses : Honours

This study explored the effect an educational unit on ethical issues in nursing had on the ethical reasoning of practising registered nurses. The educational unit was conducted at a university school of nursing as part of a baccalaureate degree programme for already registered and practising nurses. A quasi-experimental posttest design utilising stratified random samples compared subjects from one group who had undertaken the unit (n=53) with subjects from another group who had not (n=61). Ethical reasoning was measured using Grisham's Nursing Dilemma Test and a researcher designed demographic data sheet provided information on additional variables for analysis. The group which had …
