Was Manchukuo a favored trading nation of Japan or just another province in an expanding Japanese empire? Answers to these questions are the motivation for this paper, and aim at the heart of Manchukuo's history.

An expert system for identifying cows to be culled, MAXCULL, was programmed to run on an IBM or compatible personal computer. It was designed to be used with Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) records as an aid in decision making. MAXCULL used fifty-two health, seventeen reproduction, and thirty-nine production rules in the analysis.

MAXCULL was initially developed using two expert system tools. VP-Expert and Super Expert both had inductive abilities and were reasonably priced. This dissertation involved the design and validation of the Obesity Cognitions Inventory (OCI) which was intended to quantify cognitions associated with obesity. An initial pool of 117 items was refined through expert ratings, a pilot test involving 59 subjects, and a major test and validation using 217 subjects.

The resulting 56-item instrument contains scales measuring five types of cognitions: Personal Control, Dietary Restraint, Cost-Benefit Beliefs, Health Knowledge, and Self-Concept. Test-retest reliabilities for these scales range from .69 to .83 and Cronbach alphas range from .57 to .82. This thesis examines the inverse relationship between foreign capital inflow and domestic savings. The results of the tests lead to a variety of outcomes: (1) There is a positive relationship between the domestic savings ratio and the foreign savings ratio in sub-Saharan African countries. (2) The conclusion from the statistical use of the Chow Test shows that the derived results are reliable results, with the exception of one country, Tanzania.
