The purpose of this study was to explore the current status and future potential of the relationship between attendant care and occupational therapy. Survey results showed that a large number of occupational therapists and in independent living centers, and that there is potential for an increase of occupational therapy involvement in attendant care.

The northwest Tobacco Root Mountains are located on the boundary between two major tectonic provinces: the fold and thrust belt and the Rocky Mountain foreland. Deformation typical of the Rocky Mountain foreland is present in the form of two major northwest trending faults with associated folds. Paleozoic rocks were passively draped over at least one of the elevated Precambrian blocks. Foliation of the Precambrian rocks also appears to have been gently folded in the process.

Folds and thrusts occur within the Precambrian and Paleozoic rocks, on the westernmost flank of the range, appearing to follow the general trend of the …

The purpose of this study was to investigate plybond strength development of secondary fiber by the addition of the marine polymer chitosan.

The chitosan was applied to refined, lightly refined and unrefined pulp suspensions. Two-ply handsheets were produced with addition levels of .5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 percent chitosan based on fiber weight.

Results indicate that addition of chitosan to two-ply handsheets significantly increased plybond strength from 30 to 120 percent depending on furnish and degree of refining. It was also determined that maximum strength values of selected tests occurred at approximately the two percent addition level of chitosan. …

A study was made comparing papers dyed in a rosin/alum sized system to papers dyed in two alkaline sized systems. The alkaline sizes chosen were alkyl ketene dimer and alkenyl succinic anhydride. The dye types studied were acid, basic, anionic direct, and cationic direct. The degree of sizing was varied for each sizing type to see if the amount of sizing would effect dye retention. The papers dyed with anionic and cationic direct dyes and the basic dye were not significantly effected by sizing type of sizing degree. Paper made from TMP fibers offers good opacity and stiffness, but its use is limited because of its low strength. Chemical post-treatment of TMP offers possibilities of improving strength. Sulphonation of lignin appears to be the most economically feasible treatment. This thesis was oriented toward finding out if sulphonation of TMP fibers would improve the strength properties of TMP handsheets. Southern pine TMP fibers were treated with sodium sulfite (Na₂SO₃). Since 1974, the use of ultraviolet-cured inks and coatings has become popular with the printing industry. Unfortunately for the deinking industry, removal of these inks is difficult using conventional methods in the U.S. Theory and laboratory work suggests these special inks may be removed using the flotation process.

It was discovered that the optimum flotation cell temperature for UV-cured inks is not significantly different than the optimum temperature for normal emulsifiable inks. However, optimum cell pH was found to be different between the two inks, and most effective at low pH for UV-cured ink.

This project concentrated on the development and subsequent results of an integrated deinking system. Although the chemistry and basic principles are quite different, a few European companies are successfully combining the two·systems by taking advantage of the differences.

Advantages of an integrated system over the conventional type included higher brightness, lower ash content and decreased sensitivity to particle size.

The experiment consisted of two different two-stage deinking systems. Each system was run twice; once with a sodium-precipitate chemistry and once with a calcium precipitate chemistry.

The objective of this study is to look at the effect of starch temperature on the emulsification of ASA. Historical information was limited, but it was discovered that an emulsion particle size range of 1-2 microns would give optimum size results.

A continuous emulsification apparatus was constructed using a glass venturi and power syringe to emulsify the starch and ASA. The basic conclusions drawn from the experiment were that the starch temperature did have an effect on the final sizing characteristics of the sheets. Refiner peroxide bleaching trials were carried out at the Abitibi-Price Research pilot plant using a Sunds-Defibrator CD300 pilot-scale refiner. Results show that, at the pilot scale, blowline addition of bleach liquor gives better brightness gains than addition in the refining zone. Using this technique, brightness gains equivalent to tower bleaching can be obtained when the bleaching parameters are properly controlled. The most important factors were post-refiner retention time and temperature, and the alkali charge in the bleach liquor. These three factors were shown to be highly interdependent. The effect of binder migration on physical paper coating properties was also studied. This report reviews past laboratory studies on binder migration, and the factors that affect binder migration. The coating application was done on a laboratory keegan coater. Dried coating was physically removed using a surface grinder, and the grind offs were analyzed for latex concentration, to determine the degree of binder migration. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a performance management program designed to improve the academic success of high-risk college students; students who had been previously dismissed from the university and had grade point averages (GPA) below 2.0 (on a 4.0- point scale). Twenty-two of these high-risk students were required to enroll in a one-credit hour performance-management course. They met weekly with a student staff member and prepared a contract, which specified their goals for the upcoming week and evaluated the past weeks' accomplishments. The Schlemmer site is located about 20 km southwest of Cahokia Mounds State Park at the southern edge of Dupo, Illinois. This thesis analayzes 166 vessels recovered from 29 pit and structural features at the southern portion of the site. Using a newly defined late prehistoric American Bottom chronology, the Schlemmer vessels were assigned to either Patrick phase (A.D. 600-800) or Lindeman phase (A.D. 950-1000) components. The research discussed in this thesis attempts to describe and explain the formal variation in Schlemmer ceramic vessels through time and space. A discharge of chromium-arsenic-copper laden wastewater occurred periodically from 1970 to 1980 at a wood preserving company located in southwestern Kalamazoo County, Michigan. As a result of this discharge, soils at the company site became contaminated with chromium, arsenic, and copper, and a local glacial outwash aquifer became contaminated with hexavalent chromium.

Soil samples collected from the discharge site were analyzed for clay-silt-sand-gravel content, organic matter, pH, clay mineralogy, and chromium, arsenic, copper, iron, and manganese content. The magmas which formed the northeastern Idaho batholith were contaminated with, or derived from, old crustal material as evidenced, from previous studies, by high whole-rock ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios, relatively high ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁶Pb ages, and Archean to Proterozoic upper intercept ages for batholithic zircons.

The old zircon component has been identified in this study by separating zircons into fractions based on size and morphology. Pb/U isotopic ratios are distributed on a chord with a lower concordia intercept intrusive age of 73.6+6 m.y. Bioclastic limestones, siltstones, and shales of the Point Pleasant Member were deposited in a shallow marine environment immediately below normal effective wave base. High-energy conditions produced by storms lowered the effective wave base and stirred the bottom sediments and redistributed them into bedforms. The different types of contacts, distribution of the faunal groups, and fabrics permit inferences regarding energy levels and assignment of samples to a mode of deposition. Vertical and lateral trends were then deduced. Using a single-subject A-B-C-D design, this study examined NaCl and sucrose taste thresholds in water, tomato juice, and milk with four 4-year-old children. Taste thresholds were determined by presenting several concentrations of an adulterant (i.e. NaCl, sucrose) in each vehicle, in blocks of ten trials. Subjects evaluated each taste sample by pressing one of two levers (Yes/No response). Detection threshold was defined as the level at which there was 50% correct responding. During Baseline, subjects received no feedback regarding the accuracy of their response. During the differential reinforcement phase, subjects received reinforcement following each correct response. This study hypothesized that high writing apprehensive subjects would differ significantly from low writing apprehensive subjects in regard to the writing intensity of their jobs. A random sample of 143 people employed in clerical, technical, secretarial, professional, supervisory, or administrative positions in one midwestern company was studied. Subjects completed the Writing Apprehension Test and the Writing Intensity Questionnaire. The latter was designed for this study to measure the amount and type of writing projects subjects produced, plus audience and deadline pressure. The Effects Of Validation Versus Reality Orientation Approaches In Music Therapy With Disoriented Elderly Adults, Debra Diane Harvey

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Validation and Reality Orientation in a music therapy setting with disoriented elderly adults. Subjects (age 80 and older) were divided into four treatment groups, two each of Validation and Reality Orientation (total n=19). The groups met for thirty minutes, five days a week, for six weeks. Pre and posttest measures of orientation, ego integrity, and behavior were compared using a one-way analysis of variance on mean gain scores. Results showed a significant improvement (p<.05) on the measure of ego integrity in the Validation treatment groups. No other significant differences were found for either treatment group on the measures of orientation or behavior. Recommendations for further investigation include more attention to specific levels or orientation and behavior prior to treatment, and the use of a larger sample population.

The reaction between copper(II) and N -(2-hydroxyethyl)iminodiacetatonickelate( II) (NiHEIDA) was studied between pH 4.0 and 5.6 over a 70 fold variation in copper concentration at an ionic strength of 1.25 and a temperature of 25° C. The reaction order in both NiHEIDA and Cu(U) is first. The reaction rate is pH sensitive and a hydrogen dependent pathway as w ell as copper dependent and copper and hydrogen independent pathways were found.

The system considered is a simple classical fluid with interactions according to the Lennard-Jones (6-12) pair potential function. Two parametric integral equations (C and T) are studied in detail. Derivation of equation T and a power series solution are given. Computer solutions at several different temperatures, densities, and parameter values are obtained.
