Trouble In River City: An Analysis Of An Urban Vice Probe, Joseph S. Uris
Trouble In River City: An Analysis Of An Urban Vice Probe, Joseph S. Uris
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is an historical case study of a highly publicized investigation of vice and official corruption which took place in Portland, Oregon from 1954 to 1958. Three major relevant areas of social science literature are reviewed. These are: historical material on American reform and corruption, criminology and political science. This literature suggests both the ubiquity and usefulness of vice and corruption in the urban situation.
A set of propositions regarding vice, corruption and reform was developed from these works. These propositions were then examined in terms of the vice probe and political situation in Portland, Oregon.
The triangulation method …

Attitudes And Attained Esl Proficiency Among First Generation Swedish Mormon Immigrants, Cecilia Nihlen
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis project, the relationship between attitudes toward target and native culture groups and attained ESL proficiency among immigrants was evaluated. The subjects were thirty adult native Swedes, all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who had spent an average of 29 years in the United States. Fourteen were members of a Swedish-speaking branch, while sixteen were members of English-speaking wards. Significant differences were found in immigrants' attitudes toward the culture groups. High English proficiency related positively with a more positive attitude toward the target culture group. Those demonstrating high proficiency viewed the general native …

Of Another World: The Jehovah's Witnesses, William Wesley Zellner
Of Another World: The Jehovah's Witnesses, William Wesley Zellner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Of Another World is an account of how the Jehovah's Witnesses recruit new members and retain these converts in the face of a skeptical world. The study also attempts to advance a theoretical model toward a generic and generalized account for conversion to a group with a devalued religious perspective. The model, developed by John Lofland in his study of the members of the Unification Church, appears with some modification, to be generalizable to the Jehovah's Witnesses. After modification, the model is still applicable to members of the Unification Church. It is argued that the social characteristics of a group …
The London, Ontario Asylum For The Insane 1870-1902, Cheryl Lynn Krasnick
The London, Ontario Asylum For The Insane 1870-1902, Cheryl Lynn Krasnick
Digitized Theses
This examination of the London, Ontario Asylum for the Insane (London Psychiatric Hospital) from its opening in 1870 until the end of the nineteenth century is one of the first analytical studies of a Canadian mental institution, particularly from the inmates' perspective. The thesis attempts to describe the types of people who were committed to late nineteenth century asylums through analysis of the patients admitted to the London Asylum between 1870-1877. The administrations of the first two superintendents, Henry Landor and Richard Maurice Bucke are compared. Because their position required an authoritative outlook, they experienced difficulties in dealing with their …

A Revitalization Study Of Merrimac Square - Merrimac, Massachusetts, Diane Lee Flint
Open Access Master's Theses
The Town of Merrimac is located approximately 35 miles north of Boston on the New Hampshire border. Merrimac developed as a small industrial town and became prosperous during the latter part of the nineteenth century, as a center for the manufacture of horsedrawn carriages.
Merrimac Square, the area selected for study, was the focus of activity during these years. Established on the Square were carriage finding houses, the carriage shops themselves, an elegant town hall building donated by a well-to-do native and many fine homes of the carriage business entrepreneurs. Today, many of these structures remain, strongly reinforcing Merrimac's historic …

From Ritual To Resurrection: The Exploratory Poetic Of Seamus Heaney, Susan L. Morris
Masters Theses
Heaney's poetry has grown and changed since the publication of his first collection of poetry, Death of a Naturalist. This paper is an attempt to present the development of Heaney's exploratory poetic which was created through his use of language and image, allowing him metaphorical vehicles for the examination of oppositions.
Heaney began his poetic exploration, or "dig," with the collections Death of a Naturalist and Door Into the Dark. The poetry presents nature images which represent Heaney's search into the unknown, the dark places. These images symbolize a searching for the imagination and for the purpose of …
