The Negro Landholder Of Georgia And His White Counterpart, 1860-1900, Richard L. Parks
The Negro Landholder Of Georgia And His White Counterpart, 1860-1900, Richard L. Parks
Student Work
History, for any generation of historians, will be different from the history written by earlier generations of historians. Events, as well as obscure people who have been ignored by earlier historians, now are beginning to receive the attention they deserve. The history of the Negro in the United States is one of those previously obscure subjects. Individuals seeking information or understanding about the historical role of the Negro in the United States seek special courses or special information. General works in American history deal almost exclusively with white Americans. It has only been with the increasing interest about the Negro …
The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale
The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale
Honors Theses
Parliament passed its first comprehensive public health act in 1848. Prior to that time Britain as well as other European countries had mostly just tolerated insanitary conditions.
In English medieval towns people threw their garbage onto the narrow streets where animals--pigs, cattle, ducks--roamed, Houses were built with projections over the streets which blocked light and ventilation. There were few qualms about slaughtering animals on the streets. The common method of sewerage was by cesspools which in some cases were built underneath the houses and in most cases were cleaned out only once every several years by the "dust-collectors". Even in …

On June 15, 1929, President Herbert Hoover signed the Agricultural Marketing Act into law bringing to a close eight years of intensive work by many people interested in the farm problem. Thus, the President had redeemed a campaign pledge to call a special session of Congress and secure a far-reaching piece of farm legislation. The course of agricultural relief, from its origin in the farm depression to the enaction of the new law, was influenced by practical politicians, professional farm representatives, and economic theorists. Each group had an impact on the final solution.

A Political History Of The Poll Tax In Virginia, 1900-1950, Conley L. Edwards
A Political History Of The Poll Tax In Virginia, 1900-1950, Conley L. Edwards
Master's Theses
The poll tax occupies a unique place in Virginia's suffrage history. Basically a twentieth century device ostensibly originated to provide revenue for the state by requiring payment of a fee before the exercise of the franchise, there was probably no other practice quite as foreign to the expanding suffrage traditions of Virginia's history as the poll tax. The only precursor to this tax was a capitation tax levied intermittently, the first such tax appearing in 1623 in the form of a levy of ten pounds of tobacco to meet the debt arising from defenses against local Indians. Free Negroes and …

Student Work
The post-Civil War era in America was one of immense expansion; its developmental process involve industrailizaiton, urbanization, and immigration. The entrepreneurs who led the development of industrailization have received praise from some historians and condemnation from others. Louis M. Hacker has referred to these business leaders as "Captains of Industry." He spoke of their talents, their innovations, their organizational abilities, and suggested that these men were always attempting "... to expand production, to lower costs, and to make more goods and services available to the people.... the net result of their efforts was substantial progress for the entire nation."

The Antecedents Of Council Bluffs, Iowa: From Exploration To Town Charter, Phillip L. Cooper
The Antecedents Of Council Bluffs, Iowa: From Exploration To Town Charter, Phillip L. Cooper
Student Work
As odd as it may seem the second oldest, second largest city in the eastern Nebraska-southwestern Iowa, area has been a neglected topic for historians. At a time when almost every town and way station has had its history written Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been overlooked. This study is an attempt to at least partially fill the void. Council Bluffs' history is far too long and complex to relate in one study of this type, but hopefully, it will be considered as a beginning.

The Box Elder Stake Academy In Its Historical Setting, Byron L. Parkinson
The Box Elder Stake Academy In Its Historical Setting, Byron L. Parkinson
Theses and Dissertations
The Box Elder Stake Academy was a part of the Church System of Academies under the direction of Karl G. Maeser. The historical setting of Box Elder County is rather unique. It was here that Lorenzo Snow directed one of the most successful forms of the United Order. The nearby city of Corinne was established as one of the few gentile cities in Utah, and from there a new crusade to end Mormon rule in Utah was begun.
The Box Elder Stake Academy was one of the first academies created under the direction of the First Presidency of the Church. …

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders
Theses and Dissertations
During the 19th Century, the Mississippi River was the chief commercial highway in the United States. But for two impediments, the Upper and Lower (Des Moines) Rapids, its entire course of 2400 miles would have offered an untroubled thoroughfare to watercraft.
The federal government, as well as private concerns, attempted throughout the better part of that century to alleviate the river of its barriers and to develop its rapids as a source of power. Those attempts were disappointingly unsuccessful, however, and not until the advent of the 20th Century, when the nation had matured both economically and technologically, was the …
Zion's Camp, Wilburn D. Talbot
Zion's Camp, Wilburn D. Talbot
Theses and Dissertations
In 1831, Jackson County, Missouri, was designated as a place of refuge for the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Attempts to establish permanent residence in their Zion ended in bloodshed and violence. An army was raised to go to the aid of those cast out of their homes. This thesis pays particular attention to the recruiting of the army and the gathering of money and provisions, the trek to Missouri, and the interaction of those promoting and opposing the camp.
The trek from Kirtland, Ohio, to Jackson County, Missouri, revealed frustrations, hardships, strengths, weaknesses, and …

Dissension Within The English Classical School: An Integration Of The Thought Of William F Lloyd,, Richard Mario Romano
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Probably more has been written about the English classical economists than any other group in the history of economic thought. While the bulk of this literature concentrates on the major figures of the period, i.e. Adam Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, and J.S. Mill, there is also a considerable amount of material devoted to the works of a less influential group which includes James Mill, DeQuincy, Mcculloch, and Senior. By now the role of all these figures is fairly well understood and attention has shifted to the views of lesser known individuals within the classical period who, foreshadowing later developments in economic …
