During the seventy-eight years of Jonathan Swift's life, from 1667 to 1745, English satire was in its heyday. The stinging bit of the pen became recognized as one of the strongest political weapons, and those who possessed the natural gift of creating this weapon were sought high and low by those who desired to sway public opinion. There are really three main reasons why this period, in particular, was an age of satire. "First, it was a time of radically changing values, when intensely held convictions were in conflict with each other, and a new world order was emerging. Second, …

History Of The Metropolitan Theatre In Grand Forks, North Dakota, Under Independent Management, 1890-1897, Alan H. Adair

This study provides a historical record of Grand Forks theatrical activity during a part of the last decade of the nineteenth century (1890-1897) when the Metropolitan theatre operated under local management. A focus on the cultural climate of the city relative to the theatrical activity provides a full range analysis of the theatre's operation and the events produced. Newspapers comprise te most valuable source of material with manuscripts, printed records, and interviews also contributing to this evaluation.

Perhaps no time in the history of Anglo-Irish relations has brought more criticism on a British administration than the period of the great of 1846-50. The man most responsible for British policy during those years, Lord John Russell, has been accused of having only a superficial interest in the well-being of millions of Irish people, and it had been said that his actions were motivated primarily by political considerations.
