As in other cities, …

A Study Of The Respiratory System Of The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Ben Peter Arnowitz Oct 1943

A Study Of The Respiratory System Of The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Ben Peter Arnowitz

Bachelors’ Theses

The respiratory mechanisms of birds, unlike that of mammals, are definitely adapted to the function of flight. Because of this added adaptation, we should expect, therefore, some morphological and perhaps even embryological, physiological, and histological differences. An example of a morphological difference between birds and mammals is the intricate system of air-sacs that are present in birds. This remarkable feature is probably the reason why birds are able to fly as they do.

In this thesis the writer has used the sparrow (Passer domesticus) for the basis of his experiments. This particular bird was chosen in preference to …

The Personal Religion Of Five Representative Eighteenth-Century Poets, Florence G. Marsh Aug 1943

The Personal Religion Of Five Representative Eighteenth-Century Poets, Florence G. Marsh

Masters Theses

Preface: This thesis had its inception in a study of the personal religion of Samuel Johnson, done in the fall quarter of 1942 for Dr. Emperor's seminar. That study, which forms the second chapter here, was extended to include the personal religion of Thomas Gray, James Thomson, Edward Young, and William Shenstone because of my interest in the subject. The selection of the men to be studied was largely arbitrary; five seemed to be all that the scope of a thesis would permit me to treat adequately.

Hoxie Neale Fairchild's Religious Trends in English Poetry, I am sorry to …

Studies In Abdominal Distention, Valerie Bertina Johnson Aug 1943

Studies In Abdominal Distention, Valerie Bertina Johnson

All Theses

Experiments have increased in number within recent years on the problem of Abdominal Distention. Gatch has stated that "distention is the primary cause of death from all forms of bowel obstruction, mechanical or paralytic, and most of the other supposed and suggested causes of death cannot exist in the absence of distention." Gilbert, Leroy and Feun have performed a number of experiments showing the effect of abdominal distention on coronary blood flow. In these experiments they have shown that distention of the stomach with air causes a decrease in coronary flow, mediated by a reflex over the vagus nerve causing …

They do not realize the fact that they must play a part in helping pupils continue their reading growth.

Review of Studies

It has been indicated by W. S. Cray in a recent study that from ten to …

"In practice, however, the American high school is still a selective institution. A third of those who enter never reach the second year, and considerably less than half graduate." Chapter I

Introduction

Statement of the Problem. Some Physical And Chemical Properties Of Wheat Starch In Relationship To The Maturity Of The Wheat, Claude W. Bice

Master's Theses

Wheat is one of the most valuable of economic plants and is grown extensively throughout the world. Because of the unique chemical and physical properties of its gluten, wheat is superior to all other cereals for bread making. Its high starch content provides a tremendous source of energy as a food, as well as filling certain industrial starch needs, especially in textile manufacturing . The present study on properties of immature and mature wheat starches should be of inestimable worth for evaluation of damaged wheats for starch production, as well as for yielding fundamental information which may facilitate the use …

Observations Of The Use And Efficacy Of Changing A Patient's Concept Of His Role: A Psychotherapeutic Device, Ethel Edwards Jul 1943

Observations Of The Use And Efficacy Of Changing A Patient's Concept Of His Role: A Psychotherapeutic Device, Ethel Edwards

Master's Theses

The problem we faced was to try to develop some form of psychotherapy that would not consume a great deal of time. It was desirable that it should be applicable to a wide range in type of cases and that it should be simple enough so that it would require little training on the part of the therapist. Semantics suggests that a personality may be built up because of language. The use of words as a means of communication has created a civilization yet each person because of individual differences and experiences has his own interpretation of these words. As …
