The purpose of this study was to examine parent's perceptions of multicultural education, including how they thought a multicultural approach in education may effect their children. This study examined the predictors of computer use by teachers in a semi rural school district. The variables examined were intended personal use of computers, intended use of computers for classroom instruction, and intended use of computers for classroom management. One hundred and forty six teachers at four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school were surveyed. This study hypothesizes that process drama can enhance the acting skills of undergraduate acting students. Not only is process drama effective in teaching acting skills in general; it is adaptable to teaching those particular skills required by alternative forms such as epic theatre. Process drama is an episodic form of improvisation that is initiated through the given circumstances of a pre-text and develops over an extended period of time. To Undo The Conquest: Nationalism, Socialism And The Irish Revolution, 1910-1936, Timothy M. O'Neil

This study investigates the forces and structures that produced and shaped the Irish Revolution and the subsequent modern Irish state. The project essentially asks: what accounts for limited socioeconomic change during and after the Irish Revolution? It argues that nineteenth-century Ireland emerged as a partial colony, that is to say, an integral part of the United Kingdom with parliamentary representation, but unlike England Wales and Scotland, Westminster continued to govern Ireland through the Colonial Office. This hybrid political structure produced two nationalist traditions: a constitutional tradition that attempted to use parliamentary politics to achieve an autonomous Irish state and a …

The work of James Robinson Planché, prominent in English theater from 1818 to 1856 and closely associated with Eliza Vestris, Charles James Mathews, and J. B. Buckstone, has been all but neglected by scholars. However, examining his career yields a wealth of insight into the social, theatrical, and literary atmosphere of Planché's time as well as into his particular creative processes. In particular, four classifications of his plays merit attention: melodramas, fairy extravaganzas, classical burlesques, and revues. His work has been overlooked largely because the social conditions they reflected are only accessible along very broad lines for many readers. In …

This study compared perceptions of ethnoviolence experiences among urban middle and high school students in six Michigan public school districts in the County of Wayne. Student participants represented a cross section of a diverse ethnic and racial school population, and were enrolled in grades ranging from the 8th to the 12th grade. The study investigated students' perceptions of ethnoviolence experiences, and analyzed such perceptions based on students' ethnic/racial background, gender and grade level, and length of period the students lived in the United States. Eight Mile Road is a twenty-seven mile stretch of road in southeast Michigan that joins 4.6 million people. To metropolitan Detroiters, however, Eight Mile Road is more than just a roadway or street: it is a racially symbolic marker. Eight Mile Road symbolizes more than two decades of hostility between Detroit and the northern suburbs. Some would even argue that Eight Mile Road separates two worlds: the white from the black, the safe from the unsafe, and the desirable from the undesirable. How did a roadway come to define so much? Breast cancer, is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among women in developed countries, and the incidence of morbidity and mortality is rising in developing countries. The purpose of this project was to utilize the differential display technique to identify genetic changes in normal versus malignant breast tissue. It was also used in a defined cell culture system having differential cellular characteristics, to identify genes that may be responsible for different biological behavior of these cell lines. Alcohol use among adolescents continues to be a widespread problem with as many as four million alcoholics under the age of eighteen. The cognitive variables of self-efficacy and outcome expectancies are important in determining behavior and can be viewed as mediational components whereas predisposition variables are translated into actual alcohol use or abuse. The arena where these predispositions may find the greatest expression, via cognitive variables, is within the social/peer influence realm. The purpose of this study was to determine if leadership styles and personality types differed among elementary school principals in schools that were accredited by the State of Michigan and those that were nonaccredited. Accreditation from the State of Michigan indicated that students have attained a level of mastery, while nonaccreditation meant the students were not performing academically. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of experiential education on particular aspects of associate degree graduates' careers as well as their resulting level of personal satisfaction. It compares data from experiential education graduates to graduates who have not participated in experiential education to determine if there is value in taking an experiential education curriculum. Three hundred seven (307) surveys were returned, giving a seventeen percent (17%) return rate. Differences in the expression of drug metabolizing enzymes between cells of the rat and human kidney on chemical-induced nephrotoxicity were studied. Rat renal proximal tubular (rPT) and distal tubular (rDT) cells differed in their susceptibility to trichloroethylene (Tri) and thiophene-containing compounds. These differences were caused in part by differences in the activity of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450) between the two cell types. rPT cells expressed cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2B1/2, CYP2C11, CYP2E1, CYP4A2/3, and GSTα, but not CYP3A1/2, GSTµ, GSTπ, or GSTτ. rDT cells expressed CYP2B1/2, CYP2E1, and CYP4A2/3, GSTα, and GSTµ, but not CYP2C11, CYP3A1/2, GSTπ, or GSTτ. The purpose of the study was to examine the academic value of interscholastic athletic participation, to appraise how such participation affected educational aspirations, and to ascertain, within selected motivational factors, why high school students play sports. A non-experimental descriptive research design that included descriptive and inferential statistics was used. Survey methodology that incorporated student records was also included in the design. The variables were not manipulated and no treatment was provided to the participants. This study intended to determine if there were differences in the perceptions of effectiveness of site-based management, differences in the perceptions of participation in shared decision making, and differences in the areas of decision making in which teachers should be involved, in schools using site-based management and in schools using traditional styles of management. Findings show that teachers that use site-based management did not appear to differ in their perceptions of shared decision making from those that use traditional style of management. This dissertation provides historical and theoretical analyses that demonstrate how liberal democratic ideals of individual autonomy and universal impartiality have shaped dominant conceptions of literacy. I further demonstrate the inadequacy of liberalism for addressing the relations of group oppression that define the color line in the United States. Building on this explication of the need for a theory and practice of democratic equality that can account for social groups as well as individuals, I explore contemporary post-liberal theories of communicative democracy. This dissertation shows the impact upon two academic medical centers (AMCs) from the competition from managed care. From fiscally sound and thriving organizations a decade ago, many medical schools are now facing severe money problems. U. S. medical schools derive a large share of their general operating revenues from patient care, through the income of practice plans. Since neither tuition nor research generate sufficient funds to cover medical school costs, income from practice plans is vital. Considerable research has been devoted to studying the causes and correlates of drug use and abuse among adolescents. This literature has revealed that occasional use signifies developmentally appropriate experimentation, while the extreme behaviors of abuse and abstention are signs of underlying emotional problems. Abstention has not been directly researched. Information on abstention has been a byproduct of the use/abuse literature. Personality and family relationship correlates of drug abstention were investigated in a sample of 292 seniors from a Midwestern, middle-class suburban high school. The purpose of this study was to examine the usage (diffusion) of the Beaumont Communication Tool, as part of a formative evaluation, to determine who is using the communication tool, perceptions of strengths and weaknesses of the communication tool, and perceptions of the effectiveness of the communication tool in facilitating communications with nonverbal patients. A total of 90 nurses and ancillary professionals, who used the communication tool completed an original survey to determine strengths and weaknesses of the tool, use with patients and families, and reasons why the tool is used or not used in their areas. This research studied perceptions of public school superintendents in Michigan regarding charter schools. Superintendents in Genessee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties comprising 111 school districts, completed a two-part survey about charter schools that was developed by Ogden (1995) and modified for the current study. CHAPTER II In this study, we evaluated the effect of L-NAME, a NOS antagonist, on MAP, HR, and selective vascular flows in male and female normal and diabetic rats. Rats were made diabetic using streptozotocin (50 mg/kg, IV) and maintained for 5-6 weeks. Following anesthesia with urethane/α-chloralose, the femoral artery and vein were cannulated for recording and sampling and flow probes were placed on the iliac, renal and superior mesenteric arteries. A bolus infusion of L-NAME resulted in a rapid increase in MAP in normal females and males. However, in diabetic females and males this response was significantly lower and …
