An Information-Theoretical Approach To The Adaptive Segmentation And Classification Of The Sleeping Electroencephalogram, Russell James Clark Aug 1998

An Information-Theoretical Approach To The Adaptive Segmentation And Classification Of The Sleeping Electroencephalogram, Russell James Clark

Wayne State University Dissertations

Sleep is not a single homogeneous state; it consists of several identifiable states. The states are identified by the electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram, and the electromyogram. The most common classification method consists of six classes labeled: wake, stage 1 through 4, and stage REM. A fixed length of data, usually 20 or 30 second epochs, are analyzed and placed in one of the six categories. An all-nigh sleep recording consists of 900 to 1500 such epochs and the task of scoring a record is tedious. Additionally, much of the detail in the EEG is lost due to the size of the …

Migration And Identity Processes Among Somali Immigrants In Canada, Abdi M. Kusow Jan 1998

Migration And Identity Processes Among Somali Immigrants In Canada, Abdi M. Kusow

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation represents a study of the migration processes of Somalis to Canada, and as such, it seeks to contribute to knowledge about the adjustment processes of relocation. The theoretical concepts within which the discussion of this dissertation is based are mainly derived from symbolic interactions. Thirty in-depth interviews from Somali immigrants and refugees in Toronto, Canada constituted the primary data. The data from the Somali immigrants from Toronto indicate that the process of migration intrinsically involves identity challenges and transformations. This process further raises questions about the nature of identity challenges and race relations that these individuals encounter once …

The Relationship Of Cognitive And Emotional Coping To Adjustment To Chronic Myofascial Pain, Julie A. Smith Jan 1998

The Relationship Of Cognitive And Emotional Coping To Adjustment To Chronic Myofascial Pain, Julie A. Smith

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the chronic pain literature, pain coping and adjustment traditionally have been studied using cognitive and behavioral constructs. Little research attention has been devoted to exploring the role of emotional factors and their contribution to adjustment in chronic pain patients. Recent empirical evidence suggests that certain emotional approach coping strategies and competencies are associated with positive adaptation. This study was conducted to provide a better understanding of the relationship between cognitive and emotional coping and adjustment in chronic myofascial pain patients. In particular, this study sought to introduce emotional processes into the pain coping and adjustment literature. Cognitive and emotional …

Synthesis Of 3'-Deoxy- And 2',3'-Dideoxy-4'-C-Alkyl-D-Nucleosides: Potential Antiviral Agents, Gregory William Wells

Wayne State University Dissertations

Novel methodology for the synthesis of 3'-deoxy- and 2' ,3'-dideoxy-4' -C-alkyl nucleosides has been developed. The target nucleosides are of interest as potential antiviral agents. Crucial features addressed by the methodology are: the ability to synthesize nucleosides analogs with a variety on 4'-C-alkyl substituents; exceptional stereocontrol over the C4' stereogenic center; and a semi-convergent synthesis, allowing the late stage N-glycosylation of heterocyclic bases. Both 4'-C-alkyl substituent variety and control of the C4' stereocenter are addressed by introducing the alkyl substituents and establishing the stereogenic center in a cyclopentene precursor. These alkyl substituted cyclopentenes are prepared by carbonyl alkylation of a …

Cognition And Self-Presentation Among Publicly Self-Conscious, Shy Adolescent Females, Linda Greer-Clark Jan 1998

Cognition And Self-Presentation Among Publicly Self-Conscious, Shy Adolescent Females, Linda Greer-Clark

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the cognition and self-presentation of early to middle aged adolescent girls who were self-conscious and shy, and explore the possible qualitative differences in cognition and self-presentation between shy/self-conscious girls, self-conscious/nonshy girls, and nonshy/nonself-conscious girls in a variety of social risk situations. Buss’s theory that self-conscious individuals are more psychologically vulnerable to high social risk situations than those who are not self-conscious was tested by examining the differences in cognition and self-presentation between adolescent girls who were self-conscious and labeled themselves as shy versus those who were just self-conscious during exposure to high …

Characterization Of The Regulatory Domain Of The Mammalian Multifunctional De Novo Pyrimidne Biosynthetic Enzyme Cad, Nisha Sahay Jan 1998

Characterization Of The Regulatory Domain Of The Mammalian Multifunctional De Novo Pyrimidne Biosynthetic Enzyme Cad, Nisha Sahay

Wayne State University Dissertations

Pyrimidine nucleotides play a central role in cellular regulation. Most cells have two pathways to fulfill their pyrimidine nucleotide pools: the de novo and the salvage pathway. The de novo pyrimidine pathway begins with glutamine, ATP and bicarbonate, and through six-enzymatic steps yields uridine monophosphate (UMP). In mammals, the first three activities i.e. the glutamine-dependent carbamoyl phosphate synthetase (CPSase), aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase), and dihydroorotase (DHOase) are carried on a single 240-kDa polypeptide chain called CAD. Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase (CPSase), the first enzyme in the pathway catalyzes the synthesis of carbamoyl phosphate from two moles of ATP, bicarbonate, and ammonia derived …

Gendered Utopia : Women In The Icarian Experience, 1840-1898, Diana M. Garno

Wayne State University Dissertations

Etienne Cabet's utopian novel, Voyage en Icarie (1840), depicted a country organized according to the French Revolutionary principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity that he equated with Christ's tutelages. Its National Assembly of citizens exercised the reason that Cabet deemed Nature had given men to pass beneficial laws which provided for the lifetime needs of all. This research began with an exploration of the background sources Cabet used in his utopia, especially those related to women. Icarians boasted that they had female doctors, surgeons, and priestesses. Everyone was able to choose a marriage partner without a dowry and were permitted …

The Rise Of The Reagan Democrats In Warren, Michigan, 1964-1984, Richard David Riddle

Wayne State University Dissertations

From 1964 to 1984, the Democratic Party lost support in the white working class Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan, as formerly loyal Democrats defected to vote for George Wallace, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. This study examines three controversies that contributed to this "Democratic defection." The first was the 1970 effort by federal officials to require open housing in Warren in return for urban renewal grants. After months of debate, Warren's voters turned down the funds in a 1970 citywide referendum. The second controversy, over the war in Vietnam, reflected the division in the national Democratic Party, as antiwar Democrats …

Tumors were isolated and nuclear matrix proteins isolated and analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Upon comparison, distinct nuclear matrix protein differences were observed in all of the organ sites that were investigated suggesting that the extracellular matrix, as well as growth factors and hormones, may be important in directing the production of …

Interaction Between Positive- And Negative- Regulatory Elements In The First Intron Controls Transcription Of The Glutamine Synthetase Gene During Adipocyte Differentiation, Chongsuk Ryou Jan 1998

Interaction Between Positive- And Negative- Regulatory Elements In The First Intron Controls Transcription Of The Glutamine Synthetase Gene During Adipocyte Differentiation, Chongsuk Ryou

Wayne State University Dissertations

Expression of a number of genes during cellular differentiation is controlled at the level of transcription. Cell type- and time-specific patterns of gene transcription result from the interaction between cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors. In order to understand the molecular mechanisms of gene expression at the level of transcription, the regulatory region of the glutamine synthetase (GS) gene was investigated using both functional and binding analyses. GS expression increases more than 100-fold during differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells into adipocytes. Recently, Hadden et al. (Nucleic Acid Research, 25:3930-3936, 1997) identified the regulatory regions of the mouse GS gene in the first …

A convenience sample of 149 nursing students, graduate nurses, and expert nurses was selected from nursing programs and health care agencies in the Midwest. Critical thinking …

Development Of A Middle-Range Theory Of Caregiver Stress From The Roy Adaptation Model, Pao-Feng Tsai Jan 1998

Development Of A Middle-Range Theory Of Caregiver Stress From The Roy Adaptation Model, Pao-Feng Tsai

Wayne State University Dissertations

A theory of caregiver stress derived from Roy Adaptation Model was developed to examine the relationships among stimuli, coping mechanism and adaptive modes. The theory hypothesized that objective burden in caregiving would be the most important stimulus that leaded to perceived caregiver stress. Higher perceived caregiver stress would result in ineffective responses (poor health function, lower self-esteem/mastery, role enjoyment, and marital satisfaction, and less ability to reciprocate). These adaptive modes should be interrelated. In addition, this study also examined the role of depression and the function of contextual stimuli in the model. However, statistical analysis did not support the initial …

A Zero-Bias Spark Source For Direct Solid Sample Introduction For Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry, Billie A. Shepherd Jan 1998

A Zero-Bias Spark Source For Direct Solid Sample Introduction For Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry, Billie A. Shepherd

Wayne State University Dissertations

A new "zero-bias" spark source was used as an ablation device for the analysis of solids with ICP-AES. Direct solid analysis has an inherent advantage for ICP applications as it allows a dry plasma to be maintained. This helps minimize the background species present as many arise from the water and acids present in solution. The use of a spark source as a sample introduction method for ICP employs separate sampling and excitation processes. In separating these two events, both may be optimized individually to give enhanced performance. Dependence of spark parameters such as peak current and repetition rate on …

Grieving The Violent Death Of A Child: Synthesizing The Private And Public Response, Helen Christine Dannemiller

Wayne State University Dissertations

Accidents, suicides, and homicides are the leading causes of death in the young. These are all modes of violent deaths. Although the response to loss has been a prevalent area of inquiry, limited research exists how or whether the context of violent death affects the response of parents to the loss of a child. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to enhance the theoretical understanding of the parent's bereavement response to the violent death of the child. Twelve parents whose children were murdered participated in the in-depth interviews. With the constant comparison and analysis of data, the public …
