Absolute Tumor Perfusion Determined By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy :, Nicholas Edward Simpson Jan 1997

Absolute Tumor Perfusion Determined By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy :, Nicholas Edward Simpson

Wayne State University Dissertations

The ultimate goal of this dissertation is to describe the optimization and implementation of an NMR indicator uptake technique which can non-invasively and repeatedly measure tissue perfusion. Chapter II concerns itself with the method optimization of the NMR approaches to measuring tissue perfusion. Since the primary goal of this dissertation research is to obtain absolute perfusion measures, and the AIF is required for this, Chapter II discusses the development of the apparatus and NMR method with which one can extract an apparent AIF from individual rats - a method which will not necessarily result in the animal's immediate death. As …

The Annual Educational Reports were analyzed to validate compliance with the reporting requirements of Public Act 25 of 1990 and the modification to the act by Public Acts 335 and 339 of 1993. The study, using content analysis examined the data presented in the Annual Educational Reports for the seven school districts, representing 52 school buildings, in St. Clair County for a three year period (1993-1994, 1994-1995 and 1995-1996). The seven components of the Annual Educational Reports were analyzed by 13 research questions to determine compliance, outcomes and changes during the study. The seven components investigated were: Accreditation Status, Specialized …

Emotional Competence In Children With Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder And Their Parents /, Jill Norvilitis Jan 1997

Emotional Competence In Children With Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder And Their Parents /, Jill Norvilitis

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study investigated the pattern of emotional competence skills found in children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their parents. Forty-one ADHD children and 29 non-ADHD comparison children ages 7 to 14 participated with at least one of each child's parents. Parents and children completed measures designed to assess their expression, appraisal, and regulation of emotion. In addition, parents completed measures of psychopathology for both themselves and their children. Children with ADHD were expected to be worse than comparison children at identification and regulation of emotions in themselves and in others. Parents of children with ADHD were hypothesized to show …

Cultural Conflict : Attitudes Of Arabic High School Students Toward Cultural Adaptation In An Educational Setting, Dib Saab Jan 1997

Cultural Conflict : Attitudes Of Arabic High School Students Toward Cultural Adaptation In An Educational Setting, Dib Saab

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if Arabic students from one community differed in their attitudes toward cultural assimilation based on grade level, length of time in the United States, gender, and academic performance in high school. A total of 216 Arabic high school students in grades 9 through 12 participated in this study. These students were either immigrants or children of immigrants. Cultural assimilation for the purpose of this study was defined as the process whereby a minority group gradually adopts customs and attitudes of the majority culture. This type of adaptation generally leads to disappearance of …

Maternal Grief Reactions To Their Children's Birth Defects: Factors Influencing Grief Resolution, John W. Mccaskill Jan 1997

Maternal Grief Reactions To Their Children's Birth Defects: Factors Influencing Grief Resolution, John W. Mccaskill

Wayne State University Dissertations

The study examined factors related to resolution of maternal grief reactions to the event of learning about their child's birth defects. Subjects were 63 mothers and their toddler-age children, recruited from medical clinics in the Metropolitan area of Detroit, MI. Mothers' ages ranged from 18 to 42 years (mean = 30 years). 63% (n = 40) of the families were Caucasian, with 32% (n = 20) African-American, and 5% (n = 3) from other ethnic backgrounds. Toddlers' ages ranged from 13 to 33 months, with a modal age of 28 months (mean = 25 months, SD = 5 months). 60% …

Development Of Spiral Ganglion Cells In Syrian Golden Hamster, Lollita Devi Panchoosingh Jan 1997

Development Of Spiral Ganglion Cells In Syrian Golden Hamster, Lollita Devi Panchoosingh

Wayne State University Dissertations

An understanding of auditory development requires description of anatomical events underlying the onset and maturation of function. Relatively little is known about the anatomical events responsible for subsequent maturation of auditory sensitivity. The present project will attempt to fill this gap by focusing on ultrastructural changes in the type I spiral ganglion cells (SGC) of the cochlea during the period of functional maturation using the Syrian golden hamster (LVG strain). Cochleas were taken from 6 day old to 30 day old animals in two day intervals, inclusively. Mature 36 day old hamsters were studied for comparison. The cochlear tissue was …

Relationships Between Cognitive Styles And Written Composition Of African American Ninth Grade Students In A Metropolitan School District In Western Michigan /, Catherine W. Large Jan 1997

Relationships Between Cognitive Styles And Written Composition Of African American Ninth Grade Students In A Metropolitan School District In Western Michigan /, Catherine W. Large

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships that exist between cognitive styles, and written composition. The procedure included testing 200 ninth grade students in six high schools in a metropolitan school district in western Michigan, with the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT). The median for the GEFT scores was the criterion used to form two categories of cognitive styles, low field-independent and high field-independent. The writing items of the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) Eighth Grade Writing Test, provided the measures for writing comprehension. Analyses of one-way ANOVA were performed to determine whether there were statistically …

An Idiographic Approach To The Person X Environment Interaction In Support Judgments /, Catherine J. Lutz Jan 1997

An Idiographic Approach To The Person X Environment Interaction In Support Judgments /, Catherine J. Lutz

Wayne State University Dissertations

Earliest models of perceived social support emphasized aspects of the individual's social environment, proposing that perceived support is a direct function of the help one actually received. Other researchers speculated that perceived social support is a reflection of the personality of the perceiver. However, a recent series of generalizability studies suggest that the single most important determinant of support judgments is the Perceiver by Environment interaction. Thus, it appears that social support judgments are largely driven by the unique matching between the perceiver and the support provider. One potential mechanism of this matching process is that different people base their …

An Evaluation Of Item Response Theory For Detecting Differential Item Functioning Of Examinees' Responses To The Seventh Grade Mathematics Meap Test Investigating Learner Characteristics /, David Charles Odett Jan 1997

An Evaluation Of Item Response Theory For Detecting Differential Item Functioning Of Examinees' Responses To The Seventh Grade Mathematics Meap Test Investigating Learner Characteristics /, David Charles Odett

Wayne State University Dissertations

Historically test fairness has been an issue for stakeholders such as test makers, administrators, educators, examinees, and others. The consequence of bias testing creates "high stakes" for all stakeholders. During the past 50 years several cycles of dissatisfaction and reform occurred in educational testing (McGhee, 1995). Large scale testing was used to make decisions regarding college entrance, employment opportunities, funding, school policies and curriculum. The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) was a large scale testing program requiring students to pass several specific sections (reading, mathematics, and science) before receiving a state-endorsed diploma. Test measurement continues to come under the microscope …

The Impact Of Computer Based Interactive Instruction (Cbii) In Improving The Teaching-Learning Process In Introductory College Physics, Afif A. Jawad Jan 1997

The Impact Of Computer Based Interactive Instruction (Cbii) In Improving The Teaching-Learning Process In Introductory College Physics, Afif A. Jawad

Wayne State University Dissertations

Institutes are incorporating computer-assisted instruction (CAI) into their c1assrooms in an effort to enhance learning. The implementation of computers into the classroom is parallel with education's role of keeping abreast with societal demands. The number of microcomputers in schools has increased tremendously. Computer Based Interactive Instruction (CBBI) software is available for the language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, etc. The traditional instruction, supplemented with CAI, seems to be more effective than traditional instruction alone. Although there is a large quantity of research regarding specific aspects of learning through computers, there seems to be a lack of information regarding the impact …

Wayne State University Dissertations

Results and Implications The Medicare data used for the study comes from previous RAND studies and data from a sample community hospital for comparisons of average lengths of stay, post hospital utilization, characteristics of patients who have a propensity to use post hospital care by gender, age and diagnosis. The study examines how reimbursement has effected patient care management therefore changing the hospital discharge planners priorities. The activities where discharge planners spend the majority of their time were stressed the least during their collegiate preparation as rated by the discharge planners through a survey instrument. Patients are experiencing shorter hospital …

A Comparison Of Homeless And Housed Poor Children On Psychological And Environmental Factors /, Pamela Anne Bukowski Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Homeless And Housed Poor Children On Psychological And Environmental Factors /, Pamela Anne Bukowski

Wayne State University Dissertations

Relatively little of the existing research on homelessness has focused on children. Those studies that do exist suggest that homeless children experience serious psychological and environmental problems. However, findings are inconsistent and most are comprised of nonrepresentative samples, have a limited range of measures with no evidence of reliability and validity, and, most importantly, lack appropriate comparison groups on which to base their results. The present study attempts to determine if there is a higher occurrence of psychological and environmental problems in homeless children when compared to a carefully matched sample of housed children using the same interview protocol and …

A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis Of A Statewide Fiscal Reform: The Case Of Michigan's 1993-3 Property Tax Reform, Buagu G. Ndugga Musazi Jan 1997

A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis Of A Statewide Fiscal Reform: The Case Of Michigan's 1993-3 Property Tax Reform, Buagu G. Ndugga Musazi

Wayne State University Dissertations

A computable general equilibrium model analyzes the tax effects of simultaneously reducing property taxes by 44 percent and increasing the rate of sales taxation from four to six percent in Michigan in 1994. The dissertation fills the void in the literature for empirical regional computable general equilibrium models. It adds some numerical flesh to the existing general equilibrium analytical frameworks by Courant (1977) Henderson (1985), McLure (1969) and Kimbell, Shih and Shulman (1979). Most analytical frameworks use the "New View" theory of property tax incidence where property taxes, in an economy with fixed capital, are "profit-taxes" on capital rather than …
