Language Brokering Consequences As A Function Of Development, Brent M. Gage Dec 2016

Language Brokering Consequences As A Function Of Development, Brent M. Gage

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Language brokering can be defined as a child mediating linguistically for a parent or other adult figure, either in spoken or written communication. This situation is a common occurrence among migrant and refugee families as children tend to acquire a new language at an accelerated rate in comparison with adults. As the immigrant and refugee populations continue to grow in comparison with native groups within the United States, it is increasingly important to understand the phenomenon of child language brokering. Moreover, it is particularly relevant to understand how the expectations for and consequences of language brokering may help to shape …

Narrative Development In Preschool And School-Age Children, Sara Hegsted Jan 2013

Narrative Development In Preschool And School-Age Children, Sara Hegsted

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Children hear and use narratives in a variety of contexts including school, social situations, and at home. A narrative is a form of discourse that is used to tell the listener what happened in a temporally sequenced, agent-focused way, and these stories can be a production of a real or fictional account. Speech language pathologists take a particular interest in children's narrative abilities because children's story telling capabilities play a large role in language acquisition as well as future academic success, especially literacy. The following literature review seeks to synthesize information on narrative development, production, and intervention from the perspective …

Moving Object Tracking: Seeking Extensible Solutions, Jeremy Pack Dec 2006

Moving Object Tracking: Seeking Extensible Solutions, Jeremy Pack

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Moving object tracking is a difficult field with no "best" solution. The documents contained here detail software that was developed in order to perform tracking of objects that are in the line of sight of multiple cameras. Some of the software developed is already in use by the US Army Dugway Proving Ground. Other software represents prototype or early development code. This software was written by Jeremy Pack, who was the lead programmer, and Luke Andrew at the Space Dynamics Laboratory in Logan, Utah.

Southern Hills, Pocatello, Idaho: Wildlife Conservation/Development Study, Justin Kmetzsch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The sagebrush grassland landscape has shaped aspects of southeastern Idaho culture and enhanced its rural economy. Sharptail grouse, sage grouse and mule deer hunting are deeply rooted in family traditions. Each fall thousands of residents head out into the field to hunt, camp and enjoy the autumn outdoors. Deer hunting and associated activities generate an estimated 240 million dollars annually, in the Idaho economy. More recently, watching and photographing mule deer and other sagebrush grassland species is increasing in popularity and economic significance. But, trends in land conversion and development threaten sagebrush grassland landscapes, the wildlife they sustain, and cultural …

"With A Joint View To The Entertainment And Information Of Mankind:" The Development Of Eighteenth Century British Tourism, Sarah Caroline Wegener

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Tourism in its current form did not exist until the nineteenth century with the emergence of the railroads. However, crucial developments in mid-eighteenth century Great Britain started the process leading to modem tourism. Over the course of the eighteenth century, the concept behind tourism expanded and its motivations were transformed. Early eighteenth century tourism was associated with wealth and class. United in their various interests by a common desire, tourists sought experience to assist them in their future life. By the end of the century a shift had taken place, and tourism took on a new face. Though this form …

The Influence Of Fluorescent Light On The Development Of In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Oocytes, Jared Bunch Aug 1996

The Influence Of Fluorescent Light On The Development Of In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Oocytes, Jared Bunch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Advances in in vitro fertilization and in vitro culture techniques have allowed considerable progress in identifying physiological requirements of mammalian embryos. Parrish et al. (11) reported a major breakthrough on in vitro fertilization when his group identified heparin as an important factor for the capacitation of spermatozoa. Capacitation is necessary for fertilization of matured oocytes. During the precoculture era of embryos (prior to 1980), the development of early preirnplantation embryos was vary limited regardless of medium, medium supplement, gas atmosphere, osmolarity or pH used (7). Coculture techniques of fertilized oocytes using somatic cells during in vitro production, particularly of bovine …

Development Of An Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay Capable Of Detecting Antibodies Specific To The Cytomegalovirus, Rachel Bird May 1996

Development Of An Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay Capable Of Detecting Antibodies Specific To The Cytomegalovirus, Rachel Bird

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The cytomegalovirus (CMV) is capable of causing serious illness and death in immunocompromised individuals. The objective of this research is to develop a method of detecting antibodies against CMV. This has lead to the development of an Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) that is capable of detecting CMV or anti-CMV antibodies. The process in the development of such an assay involves; 1) the purification of Hyperimmune Rabbit Serum containing anti-CMV antibodies, 2) determination of the appropriate concentrations necessary to provide a clear and concise response to the test, and 3) testing of monoclonal antibodies to determine their specificity towards the …

The Fourth Amendment: History And Development Of The Reasonable Search, Bradley L. Tilt May 1993

The Fourth Amendment: History And Development Of The Reasonable Search, Bradley L. Tilt

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The existence of the search and seizure restrictions encoded in the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution is the result of a two part historical development that took place simultaneously in England and the American colonies. Severe legislative restrictions on the press were largely responsible for the developments in England, while in the colonies it was British tax and trade regulations that spawned the changes. On both sides of the Atlantic, however, the primary catalyst was the government's use of general searches in the enforcement of those laws. It was the continued abuse of general searches despite the public's …

Answers to these questions are the motivation for this paper, and aim at the heart of Manchukuo's history.

The Role Of Plant Hormones In Grass Tiller Development, Marit Snow Jan 1986

The Role Of Plant Hormones In Grass Tiller Development, Marit Snow

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Two bunchgrass species commonly found in the Intermountain West, Agropyron spicatum and A. desertorum, are morphologically similar but respond to defoliation very differently. A. desertorum produces more daughter tillers and is more hardy than A. spicatum. Hormones were applied to experimental plants to observe changes in tillering rates, growth rates, and response of plants to the stress of exogenous hormone application. Gibberellic acid treatments were related to increased tiller height in both species, but also a decrease in daughter tiller production in A. desertorum and an increase in senescence in A. spicatum. Kinetin increased senescence in A. desertorum. Auxin showed …

The Development Of Agricultural Policy And Patterns Of Land Settlement In The State Of Israel (1882 - 1967), Sandra L. Goodman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

On May 15, 1948, the state of Israel came into existence in accordance with the United Nation's Palestinian partition resolution of November, 1947. After two thousand years of Jewish exile and diaspora, the world had recognized and granted the Jews the right to claim their Biblical homeland. Establishment of the state by no means signified the beginning of Jewish presence in this Middle Eastern corner of the world since the time of their exile in 70 AD. Since the first modern major wave of Jewish immigration into Palestine in the 1880s, national identity had been the goal of idealistic pioneers, …

Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is difficult to pick up a magazine, medical or otherwise, that does not include an article about the Chinese method of diagnosis and treatment known as acupuncture. This ancient technique, about which there is so much current interest, is reputed to have originated nearly 30 centuries ago when a Chinese warrior emperor made the observation that certain arrow wounds caused pain to disappear in remote parts of the body.

During World War II, the new China of the Red Army rediscovered the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of wounded or sick soldiers during combat conditions. Today, Chinese medical …
