Powerful light-weight portable computers, the availability of wireless networks, and the popularity of the Internet are driving the need for better networking support for mobile hosts. Current versions of the Internet Protocol (IP), make an implicit assumption that the point at which a computer attaches to a network is fixed and its IP address identifies the network to which it is attached. Packets are sent to a computer based on the location information contained in its IP address. Therefore, transparent host mobility is not supported by IP. But there is a growing need for users to be able to connect …

Temporal Integration In 17- And 20-Month Old Infants As Assessed By Elicited Imitation, Rebecca M. Starr
Student Work
The present study used a unique task derived from the elicited imitation paradigm to assess temporal integration in 17- and 20-month-old infants. Experiment 1 implemented a simpler task than has previously been used in order to tap temporal integration ability in 17-month-olds. The results indicated that the performance of 17- month-olds did not improve over that of previous research (de Haan & Bauer 1997). Experiment 2 added storage and processing demands to the de Haan and Bauer task in order to assess the robustness of temporal integration ability in 20-month-olds. The results indicated that the performance of 20-month-olds did not …

Senior Outlook On Death And Dying: A Comparative Study Of Older Volunteers Serving Older Clients Versus Older Volunteers Serving Younger Clients, Charles O. Udstuen
Student Work
This thesis examines the attitudes toward death and dying held by volunteers in the Senior Companion Program as compared with those in the Foster Grandparent Program. These programs represent two distinct environments, since volunteers in the former program interact only with other senior citizens while those in the latter program interact with children. In recent years volunteerism has been studied extensively relative to the positive effects that volunteer activities have on those performing them. However, there is a lack of research on the effects of the particular surroundings in which the volunteers operate. The comparison of two groups of volunteers …

The findings are discussed, and the families’ experiences are examined in terms of ethnicity.
Preference For Top Managerial Positions As A Result Of Utility-Maximization Behavior Under Religious Moral Prescriptions, Corneliu Munteanu
Preference For Top Managerial Positions As A Result Of Utility-Maximization Behavior Under Religious Moral Prescriptions, Corneliu Munteanu
Student Work
The analysis described in this study is focused on the influence of religious ethics over individuals' tendency to seek top-managerial positions in their professional activity. The analysis assumes agents maximize utility. According to religious doctrines, afterlife salvation is a goal which could be accomplished only by following certain prescribed behavioural norms. While salvation can be considered as being an identical goal for most religions, the- way of pursuing it differs from one religion to another. This difference in means of attaining salvation reflects on various aspects of human behaviour. One of these aspects is the professional conduct of people engaging …

A Comparative Look At Marital Happiness And Conflict In American Cross-National And Same-Nation Marriages, Sandra Meinecke
Student Work
This thesis explores the similarities and dissimilarities of perceived levels of marital conflict and happiness in cross-national and same-nation marriages and some related issues. Globally, economic and social ties between nations have increased dramatically since World War II. As a result, more and more individuals are working, studying and traveling abroad. This marked increase in international mobility has also given rise to an increase in the number of international marriages (Cottrell 1990; Imamura 1986). For example, the number of foreign spouses entering the United States annually has increased from 27,761 in 1960 to 145,247 in 1994 (U.S. Immigration and Naturalization …

The Relationship Of Perceptual Learning Modality Preference And The Use Of An On-Line Learning Environment To Achieve Non-Technology Related Course Objectives, Patricia M. Nickel
Student Work
The purpose of this thesis study was to explore the possibility of a relationship between perceptual learning modality preference and efficacy in the use of an on-line learning environment to achieve non-technology related course objectives. Subjects were 30 adult students enrolled in the CaseNET course administered by the University of Virgina. Two research questions were explored: 1.) Is there a difference in feelings of student efficacy, in a course which uses Internet technology to achieve non-technology related course objectives, for auditory, visual, and tactile learners? 2.) Is there a difference in the use of student adaptation techniques for tactile, visual, …

A Forgotten Enemy: Omaha Encounters The 1918 Influenza Pandemic, Gary Gernhart
Student Work
Influenza, or the flu as it is commonly called, is considered nothing more than a mild physical nuisance that requires little more than bed rest and aspirin. In 1918, however, this acute respiratory ailment elicited a greatly different response from the ordinary citizen. A deadly and highly contagious strain of the influenza virus emerged in 1918 that encompassed the globe in a matter of months. Although the 1918 influenza pandemic killed over twenty-two million people world-wide, of which over seven-hundred thousand were Americans, the deadly pandemic is rarely acknowledged as a catastrophic event. This study investigates Omaha, Nebraska's response to …

Minority As A Majority: Does It Make A Difference?, Terrance J. Taylor
Student Work
The relationship between race and crime has long been a primary concern of criminal justice researchers. Numerous studies have examined this relationship through the use of official statistics, self-reports, and victimization surveys. The results of these studies present multiple and often conflicting results. Studies examining official statistics and victimization data have generally found a significant difference in delinquency between White and minority juveniles, with minority juveniles responsible for more delinquency than White youth in terms of both incidence and seriousness. Self-report studies, on the other hand, have often found no differences between minority and White youth, or smaller differences than …

The Portrayal Of Older Adults In Consumer Magazines., Bonnie M. Gill
Student Work
Images of older adults in the news and advertising media contribute to the way society learns about aging. Visual presentations become increasingly important in our society of information overload where shortcuts are taken through graphics and sound bites. Perceptions are created instantly. There has been little recent research with the portrayal and representation of our aging society in general consumer magazines during the 1990s. There have been no studies that combine both news/feature and advertising photographs. This study seeks to add to the current literature about magazine portrayals of adults over age 65 through a content analysis of four national, …

A Comparison Of Relation-Breaking Behaviors, Relation-Maintaining Behaviors, And Maternal Sensitivity In Population Of Handicapped And Non-Handicapped Infants, Karol Basel
Student Work
The infant enters the world with certain abilities that allow him or her to interact with the environment. Early on infants demonstrate a preference in viewing the human face (Fantz, 1968) and selectively responding to the sounds of human speech (Eimas, Sigueland, Jusczyk, & Vigorito, 1971). The early development of perceptual sensitivities enable the infant to become a partner in the social environment. It has been suggested that the ability to engage in social interactions provides the infant with the structure to organize cognitive and affective experiences (Stern, Beebe, Jaffe, & Bennett, 1977). Through the interaction process the infant first …

When Socialism Meets Capitalism: Corrupt Practices And Post-Communist Transition. A Comparative Analysis, Alin M. Ceobanu
Student Work
This study examines the conditions of transitional societies that favor the continuous creation and recreation of corrupt practices. By comparing the present contexts of "Westernized" Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) and of the "Balkanized" Romania, I attempt to reveal that a framework for analyzing corruption in post-Communist societies requires the attention to the formal structures and informal secondary arrangements. The analysis focuses on two of the multiple determinants of corruption -- the immaturity of civil society, and the method of transferring public property (state assets) to private interests. Concerted actions are needed to curb the implications of corrupt practices. A …
