The Relation Of Anchoring And Choice To Memory Self-Efficacy And Performance In Older Adults, Renee Annette Baldi Aug 1993

The Relation Of Anchoring And Choice To Memory Self-Efficacy And Performance In Older Adults, Renee Annette Baldi

Master's Theses

The major purposes of this study were 1) to examine the effects of self-efficacy on task choice, effort and performance on a memory task, and 2) to examine the effect of sequence anchoring on self-efficacy judgments. Forty-two older adults (25 women and 17 men) completed the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), a memory complaints questionnaire (MCQ) , a self-efficacy questionnaire (SEQ), and two memory recall tasks. Subjects received an SEQ that had either a descending anchor (i.e., SEQ began with most difficult task) or an ascending anchor (i.e., SEQ began with easiest task). Also, subjects were either given a choice of …

Richmond's Taverns In The Years 1775 - 1810 : Their Role In The City's Development From Frontier Town To Capital City, Anne Rachel Hedges Aug 1993

Richmond's Taverns In The Years 1775 - 1810 : Their Role In The City's Development From Frontier Town To Capital City, Anne Rachel Hedges

Master's Theses

Richmond's taverns provided food, drink and lodging to travelers. They also served as vital community links for various pastimes, such as gambling, but also expanded their sphere of influence during the nineteenth century by providing spaces for auctions and sales, as well as theatrical and musical performances. An examination of contemporary travelers' accounts, as well as newspapers, wills, insurance reports and legislative documents provided an in-depth portrait of the taverns' importance to the city. The development of numerous taverns in Richmond paralleled the city's prominence as the new capital city of Virginia, and preceded the rapid growth Richmond would experience …

Academic Background And Prerequisite Skills For Success In College Freshman Physics, Jean Friend Condrey

Master's Theses

Instructors of college freshman introductory physics in Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia were surveyed to determine which academic courses, technical skills and general skills acquired in high school are essential for success in their courses. Faculty responses were analyzed using mean and percent frequency, while comparison of their responses by size of physics department was analyzed using chi square. Each student's responses were compared to those of his or her instructor using a paired sample t test. The general skills of English language usage were found to be the most important skills. Results from the students surveyed indicated similar …

Open The Doors : An Analysis Of The Prince Edward County, Virginia, Free School Association, Lisa A. Hohl Aug 1993

Open The Doors : An Analysis Of The Prince Edward County, Virginia, Free School Association, Lisa A. Hohl

Master's Theses

When the Supreme Court ordered integration of public schools in 1954 following Brown vs. Board of Education, Virginia responded with a policy of "massive resistance." Public schools were closed in Prince Edward County between 1959 and 1964. This thesis examines the school closings themselves, but concentrates primarily on the creation, implementation, and effect of the Prince Edward County Free School Association, a privately funded school system that operated during the 1963-1964 school year. Initiated by the Kennedy Administration as a one-year, emergency program, the Free Schools were designed to reestablish formal education for the county's black children. This thesis relied …

F. A. Hayek On The Role Of Reason In Human Affairs, Linda Catherine Raeder Aug 1993

F. A. Hayek On The Role Of Reason In Human Affairs, Linda Catherine Raeder

Master's Theses

This-study examines the views of F. A. Hayek on the role of reason in human affairs. The author explicates certain elements of Hayekian theory that bear on this issue-his views on the nature of mind, rules, law, and cultural evolution-and discusses the characteristics of both the constructivist and critical "kinds of rationalism" Hayek identifies. She then examines the views of various critics who have challenged Hayek's argument. She concludes that, contrary to certain critics, 1) the distinction he draws between constructivist and critical rationalism is meaningful and that the two kinds of rationalism appear to be related to certain political …

They Also Served : The Women Of Southwestern Virginia During The American Revolution, Rebecca A. Vaught May 1993

They Also Served : The Women Of Southwestern Virginia During The American Revolution, Rebecca A. Vaught

Master's Theses

This thesis looks at the legal status and the daily lives of the women living on the Virginia frontier in the counties of Augusta, Botetourt, Montgomery and Washington during the period of the American Revolution. All ages and all levels of society are given consideration in developing the theme that the service performed by the women who survived the rigors of frontier life during this crucial period in American history was as valuable in its own way as was the service performed by their male contemporaries. Court records give insight into the plight of servants and slaves. Court records also …

The Richmond Slave Market, 1840-1860, Robert H. Gudmestad May 1993

The Richmond Slave Market, 1840-1860, Robert H. Gudmestad

Master's Theses

On the eve of the Civil War, Richmond had developed into the largest market in the Upper South for the purchase of slaves. This thesis examines the individuals responsible for putting the city into such a pre-eminent position. Many of them gravitated to the business because of the opportunity to amass a significant amount of wealth. Those who became most successful were among the city's wealthiest residents, while traders as a whole became a close knit and well defined group within the city. They relied upon one another to foster the trade, while a few of their number assumed prominent …

The Empathetic Savior : Narcissism And The Role Of The Son In "Paradise Lost", Anna Nabb Meade May 1993

The Empathetic Savior : Narcissism And The Role Of The Son In "Paradise Lost", Anna Nabb Meade

Master's Theses

I began my research intending to develop a coherent theory regarding the poolside scene in "Paradise Lost." Troubled by the recognition that Eve was created perfect and yet shows a disturbing tendency toward vanity, I began to probe possible interpretations for Milton's allusion to the Narcissus myth. I incorporated Satan and Adam as further exploration of narcissism, and the Father and Son as self-love recognized ideally. Working with the theories of Heinz Kohut, I concluded that certain aspects of the Son's role in the Christian faith are analogous to the role of the therapist in healing the narcissistically impaired individual, …

An Evaluation Of Hands-On Instruction As A Method To Improve Observation Skills In Second Grade Students, Lydia Rogers May 1993

An Evaluation Of Hands-On Instruction As A Method To Improve Observation Skills In Second Grade Students, Lydia Rogers

Master's Theses

A hands-on assessment tool for testing second-grade students' ability to discriminate physical attributes (size, shape, color, texture, pattern, edge, part-to-whole, and type) of mollusk shells was developed, pretested, and administered to 48 second-grade students at Maybeury Elementary School, Henrico County, Virginia. Treatment group students (n = 24) attended five afterschool, activitybased classes in which close observation of object a~tributes was taught. The classes included the same discriminations as did the assessment test but used different materials. Control and test group students were retested. Neither paired t test nor question-by-question analysis showed a significant improvement in the test group's score. Presence …

Reagan And Cutting The Federal Budget : How Consistent Was The Pursuit?, E David Adams May 1993

Reagan And Cutting The Federal Budget : How Consistent Was The Pursuit?, E David Adams

Master's Theses

President Reagan assumed office advocating an economic program based on tax and spending reductions. Achievement of these objectives, Reagan argued, would improve the American economy and result in balanced federal budgets. This thesis examines Reagan's commitment to the spending restraint element of his program. I will analyze all of Reagan's budgets and State of the Union addresses to determine how consistently he sought reductions in federal spending.

Though Reagan's commitment to budget reduction was evident, his selection of means to achieve the cuts was inconsistent. His proposed budget cuts varied in intensity, and Reagan failed to propose consistent reductions in …

Relationships Of Epidermal Morphology And Breeding Behaviors In Pebble Nest-Building Minnows (Pisces: Cyprinidae), William R. Mcguire Feb 1993

Relationships Of Epidermal Morphology And Breeding Behaviors In Pebble Nest-Building Minnows (Pisces: Cyprinidae), William R. Mcguire

Master's Theses

Abstrad The objective of this study was to determine if epidermal morphology corresponds with reproductive behavior in cyprinid fishes. Representative species of nest-building fishes (Nocomds leptocephalus, Semotilus atromeculatus, exoglossum maxillingua) and non nest-building fishes (Campostoma anomaulm and Clinostomus funduloides) were studied. Light and scanning electron microscopy were used to examine epidermal morphology and keratin distribution of skins from the snout, cheek, mandible, anterior dorso-lateral trunk, and caudal peduncle of breeding males of nest-building species and were compared to those in non nest-building cyprinid species. Previous frame-by-frame analysis of video tapes of reproductive activities of each species and literature accounts were …
