The Effects Of Estradiol And Thyroxine On The Plasma And Liver Proteins Of The Thyroidectomized Water Snake, Albert D. Morrongiello Aug 1972

The Effects Of Estradiol And Thyroxine On The Plasma And Liver Proteins Of The Thyroidectomized Water Snake, Albert D. Morrongiello

Master's Theses

The effects of thyroidectomy, estradiol treatment, and thyroxine treatment on plasma and liver protein concentrations in the water snake, Natrix fasciata fasciata (Linnaeus, 1766), were investigated. There was a significant lowering of liver protein concentrations following thyroidectomy. This deficit could be replaced with thyroxine alone, but could not be replaced by treatment of thyroidectomized snakes with estradiol alone or with a combination of estradiol and thyroxine.

The plasma resolved into nine plasma proteins when electrophoresed in polyacrylamide gels. Although thyroidectomized snakes treated with estradiol only or a combination of estradiol and thyroxine showed enhancement in two protein fractions, the significance …

Ddt Inhibition Of (Na+, K+)-Activated Atpase In Gill Tissue Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, Nancy Mccutcheon Slate Aug 1972

Ddt Inhibition Of (Na+, K+)-Activated Atpase In Gill Tissue Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, Nancy Mccutcheon Slate

Master's Theses

The DDT inhibition of (Na+, K+) - activated ATPase in gill preparations of the euryhaline teleost, Fundulus heteroclitus, was measured. The (Na+, K+) -activated ATPase was found to be sensitive to DDT, with 74.6% of the enzyme's specific activity inhibited by 20 ppm DDT. The (Mg++)-activated ATPase was also sensitive to inhibition bv DDT but not to the extent of the (Na+, K+) - activat ed ATPase . Due to previous work which showed that DDT antagonized valinomycin-induced K+ conductance in a synthetic membrane, the effect of K+ on DDT inhibition was examined kinetically. The Km for K+ in gill …

Principles Of Control Theory As Applied To A Thermostat, Joseph Peter Stidham Aug 1972

Principles Of Control Theory As Applied To A Thermostat, Joseph Peter Stidham

Master's Theses

The recent development of solid state electronics has opened new possibilities in instrumentation design. One development has been the availability of compact, low cost, high gain, D. C. amplifiers which can be used in the design and construction of sensitive laboratory instruments (11). Using these amplifiers a thermostat capable of precise control can be constructed and its performance compared with the performance expected by an analysis of the closed loop control equations.

Isolation And Identification Of The Toxic Principle In The Tissues Of The Ectoproct Lophopodella Carteri (Hyatt), Donald Coleman Smith Aug 1972

Isolation And Identification Of The Toxic Principle In The Tissues Of The Ectoproct Lophopodella Carteri (Hyatt), Donald Coleman Smith

Master's Theses

The tissue of Lophopodella carteri (Hyatt) was isolated, and the agent toxic to fish present in the tissues was extracted. A chloroform-soluble component and a water-soluble component were separated from the filtrate of the homogenized tissues. Each component was tested for toxicity. The chloroform-soluble component was found to be extremely toxic. The water-soluble component was originally non-toxic, but after several months of freezing and defrosting the tissue, this component became toxic.

The chloroform-soluble component was purified by thin-layer chromatography. Several lipid classes were obtained, of which one was toxic. This toxic class was further purified by thin-layer chromatography resulting in …

Spacing And Orientation Of The Siphons Of The Tunicate, Styela Plicata, Alfred Page Chestnut Jul 1972

Spacing And Orientation Of The Siphons Of The Tunicate, Styela Plicata, Alfred Page Chestnut

Master's Theses

The spacing and orientation of sipons of Styela plicata (Lesueur)in swift and slow currents were examined. Within aggre crates, the siphons were spaced farther apart in slow currents than in swift currents. The siphons were not horizontally oriented but were vertically oriented in slow currents. The adaptive values of spacing and orientation under different currents are discussed.

To Revitalize The Flaccid Garden : A Study Of Milton's Paradise Regained, Daniel Clyde Bartges Jul 1972

To Revitalize The Flaccid Garden : A Study Of Milton's Paradise Regained, Daniel Clyde Bartges

Master's Theses

By 1654, Milton had partaken of misery, neglect, frustration, poverty; temptation, and disillusionment, as do all men; and it was his hope to "justify" (actually to "explain" since, to Milton, God's "ways" do not lend themselves to mortal justification) these plights to his fellow man. He shared the troublesome question of the Puritans: why is there evil in a world created by a beneficent God? A sincere Christian, he hoped to find a solution to this religious embarrassment through Biblical interpretation and subsequent enlightenment.

It is my belief that Paradise Regained constitutes Milton's most concentrated effort toward solving this baffling …

An Electrophoretic Comparison Of The Gill Plasma Membrane Proteins Of Freshwater And Saltwater-Adapted Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Earl Dean Hammit Jul 1972

An Electrophoretic Comparison Of The Gill Plasma Membrane Proteins Of Freshwater And Saltwater-Adapted Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Earl Dean Hammit

Master's Theses

A study was undertaken to compare proteins present in the gill membranes of freshwater and salt water adapted killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus. For this purpose, a method for the preparation or gill plasma membranes was developed. Polyacrylarnide gel electrophoresis indicated that the two types of gills possessed many membrane proteins in common. However, the freshwater adapted group possessed a single protein not found n the saltwater adapted group and the latter contained a protein not found in the freshwater adapted group.

Quantitative Growth Relationships Of Microcoleus Vaginatus (Gom.) Ex Drouet And Alcaligenes Sp. In A Sucrose-Salts Medium, James Rexford Brownell Jul 1972

Quantitative Growth Relationships Of Microcoleus Vaginatus (Gom.) Ex Drouet And Alcaligenes Sp. In A Sucrose-Salts Medium, James Rexford Brownell

Master's Theses

The blue-green alga, Microcoleus vaginatus (Gom.) ex Drouet 1968, and a bacterium, Alcaligenes sp., collected from the same habitat, were cultured together and separately in mineral salts media with and without sucrose. Growth of axenic M. vaginatus was stimulated by sucrose. In association with the bacterium in sucrose-containing media algal growth was suppressed, while in inorganic media it was stimulated. Factors involved in this algal-bacterial system probably included competition for the carbon source, changes in pH, and accumulation of cellular waste and lytic products.

The Glasgow Paradox : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Sad Ladies, Frank Alexander Lovelock Jul 1972

The Glasgow Paradox : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Sad Ladies, Frank Alexander Lovelock

Master's Theses

This study intends to examine the career of Ellen Glasgow to determine how her personal philosophy is re flected in her work--and more especially in the characters of her long-suffering heroines (the sad ladies). It is hoped that the reader will come to understand how Glasgow moved from an initial phase of hope, through a period of pain and sorrow, and into a final time of despair .

For the purpose of this study, special emphasis has been placed. on the importance of the novels which were written after 1900. It is these novels that have come to be considered …

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon Jul 1972

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon

Master's Theses

Camilo José Cela, a philosopher and a consummate artist, has produced a series of works which individually and as a group, are a careful combination of idea and form. One work cannot adequately be understood unless it is also seen in context with Cela's other works. Each of the novels, short stories, essays and travel books, is united to the others by Cela' s overall existential philosophical outlook, and each rests on and at the same time illuminates the others.

The Role Of The Adrenal Gland In The Survival Of White Rats Subjected To The Parotid Toxin Of The Toad, Bufo Marinus, Mark A. Green Jul 1972

The Role Of The Adrenal Gland In The Survival Of White Rats Subjected To The Parotid Toxin Of The Toad, Bufo Marinus, Mark A. Green

Master's Theses

Six groups of white labor atory rats were utilized in this experiment. A sham-operated group and an adrenalectomized group were used as controls. Four other groups were adrenalectomized and given replacement therapy of cortisone, deoxycorticosterone acetate, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. All groups were then given injections of toad toxin from the parotid glands of Bufo marinus. Their heart and breathing rates were recorded for 60 minutes.

All of the untreated adrenalectomized rats showed altered heart and breathing rates and were killed by the toxin. Cortisone and nor epinephrine aided the adrenalectomiz ed rats to survive. but cortisone was the …

One-Trial Versus Incremental Learning : A Re-Evaluation Employing Signal Detection Theory, James William Hyams Jul 1972

One-Trial Versus Incremental Learning : A Re-Evaluation Employing Signal Detection Theory, James William Hyams

Master's Theses

The purpose of the present study was to lend support to either the one-trial or incremental theory of learning by examining the probability of correct responses as a function of prior stimulus exposure. Signal detection theory was employed as the method of analysis. Two experiments tested the theories in a verbal learning task and a psychomotor task. On each of three trials a list of 6 AB pairs or 6 AB distances was presented once, then one of these 6 pairs or distances was tested for recognition. On the recognition test either AB (a previously viewed pair or distance) or …

A Correlation Of The Idealized Heat Of Vaporization To Molecular Weight, Harold Earl Bennett Jul 1972

A Correlation Of The Idealized Heat Of Vaporization To Molecular Weight, Harold Earl Bennett

Master's Theses

Using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation as a base, many investigators have tried to develop variations to better describe both ideal and non-ideal systems. The literature is abundant with correlations of vapor pressure to temperature and associated correlations of latent heats of vaporization to molecular characteristics; often molecular weight or carbon number.

Chelation Of Two Polyhydroxyamines With Copper (Ii) Ion, David H. Powell May 1972

Chelation Of Two Polyhydroxyamines With Copper (Ii) Ion, David H. Powell

Master's Theses

Two polyamines, 2,8-bishydroxymethyl-2,8-dimethyl- 3, 7-diaza-1,5,9-nonanetriol and 2,8-bishydroxymethyl-2,8- dimethyl-3,7-diaza-l,9-nonanediol, were prepared and the coordination of these compounds with Cu (II) ions in solution was investigated. Spectrophotometric study of the solutions of these compounds gives evidence of the formation of two complexes, containing one mole of ligand per metal ion and two moles of ligand per metal ion, respectively. The two stability constants for these complexes and the basicity constants for these ligands were calculated from potentiometric titrations at 30°C. A compadson of the stabj lity constants and basici ty cons tan ts for the two compounds was made to determine the …

Chaucer's Knight's Tale : A Symbolic Reading, Naomi Pasquine May 1972

Chaucer's Knight's Tale : A Symbolic Reading, Naomi Pasquine

Master's Theses

Chaucer's Knight Tale has called forth much critical comment. Individual lines have been commented upon, characters have been analysed and the resolution of the poem has been discussed. Critics have offered suggestions as to the poem's meaning, but an interpretation that encompasses all aspects of the poem and gives the reader the feeling that all the poetic elements of the poem have been resolved into that interpretation has not been presented. What the reader is looking for is an interpretation that will give the poem what we call today a sense of its own being or an existence of its …

Memory Facilitation As A Function Of Category Cues And Stimulus List Construction, Janet Sanford Graves Apr 1972

Memory Facilitation As A Function Of Category Cues And Stimulus List Construction, Janet Sanford Graves

Master's Theses

The capacity to effectively reorganize material to be recalled is perhaps the most essential element in the complex retention process (Deese, 1958). A known type of reorganizational procedure which was shown to exist by Boufield (1953) in his investigation of the retention of a randomized word list is the grouping or clustering of associated words. The results of his study clearly indicated that upon immediate recall of a randomized list, related items, that is, items belonging to the same category, are listed together in clusters.

A Survey Of Fresh-Water Oligochaeta And Their Commensal Ciliates From The Richmond, Virginia Area, Elsa Queen Falls Apr 1972

A Survey Of Fresh-Water Oligochaeta And Their Commensal Ciliates From The Richmond, Virginia Area, Elsa Queen Falls

Master's Theses

The distribution of North American aquatic oligochaetes and the ciliates inhabiting their guts have received very limited attention. For this reason, the present study was initiated to survey fresh water oligochaetes of the families Aeolosomatidae, Naididae, Opistocystidae, and Lumbriculidae in four bodies of water of the Richmond, Virginia area and to determine the incidence of commensal ciliates within the gut .

Teacher Use Of Stimulus Discrimination And Response Cost As Techniques For Reducing Socially Maladaptive Student Behaviors In A Secondary Classroom, Thomas J. Doland

Master's Theses

The present study was designed to evaluate the use of two behavior modification techniques in modifying three inappropriate student behaviors in a secondary classroom. T'he two behavior modification techniques employed were 1) response cost, and 2) the teacher 's use of students' names as discriminative stimuli. The subjects were a D-section Junior English class consisting of fourteen boys and five girls of average intelligence, but who were under achieving academically. The contingencies were applied to all students, utilizing a multiple baseline design. In experimental condition I, the teacher informed the class that ten minutes of free time would be available …

Linwood Holton's Long Quest For The Governorship Of Virginia And Its Impact On The Growth Of The Republican Party, Jack R. Hunter Apr 1972

Linwood Holton's Long Quest For The Governorship Of Virginia And Its Impact On The Growth Of The Republican Party, Jack R. Hunter

Master's Theses

When the history of Virginia in the 20th Century is written, the emergence of the Republican Party as a force in its political affairs will surely rank among the more important events of the time. It is my purpose to examine this event , chiefly in terms of the role played by Abner Linwood Holton, Jr., in his long and successful effort to win election as Governor of Virginia. It is not my intention to say that Holton alone was responsible for the growth of Republicanism in Virginia in the 1960's, nor to suggest that it would not have come …

A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Reaction Between Benzoyl Peroxide And N, N-Dimethyl-P-Phenylenediamine, Bertha Cosby King

Master's Theses

A special need for methods to determine low concentrations of organic peroxides originated because of their hazardous and harmful effects, Even the small amounts of organic peroxide formed by autoxidation in ethers exposed to air make the ethers highly explosive and unsuitable for use as anesthesia or laboratory solvents. The formation of organic peroxides in fats and oils causes rancidity. They have been named as pollutants, and some of them are known to have detrimental physiological effects.

The purpose of this research was to improve this method of analysis and to determine better conditions for the measurement of color by …
