A Study Of Associations Between Third Grade Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program Scores And Subsequent Scores In A Rural Tennessee School District., David Cloud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the associations and differences that exist in the NCE scores of students on the TerraNova portion of the Tennessee Comprehensive Exam, as well as the possible influence of variables such as initial scores, grade level, gender, and free or reduced lunch status. The population consisted of a stable group of 49 students enrolled in a rural Tennessee school district reported to have taken the annual assessment at the same school as they progressed from 3rd to 8th grade during the 1999 to 2004 school years. Reading Through Brown Eyes: Toward Developing A Culturally Congruent Reading Curriculum, Clara Taylor Dec 2005

Reading Through Brown Eyes: Toward Developing A Culturally Congruent Reading Curriculum, Clara Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This inquiry examined the reading motivations of African American middle grade males and investigated why some African American males are more successful academically in reading than others. This investigative pathway traveled through the possible interconnected barriers relative to reading achievement and reading motivation using the research strategy of critical narrative inquiry and the theoretical lens of critical race theory. Simultaneously, this qualitative analysis investigated racial/ethnic identity as it relates to background, popular culture, and learning styles as motivational factors for engaging African American males in reading and the learning process. African American, middle-grade males guided this path of exploration in …

Associations Involving Open Court Reading In Kindergarten And Student Performance On Standardized Assessments In Reading In A Tennessee School System., Rachel Suzanne Walk

The purpose of this study was to determine what, if any, associations existed between the implementation of the Open Court Reading® program in kindergarten and students’ reading achievement on the Terra Nova standardized achievement test in the first grade. The study involved first-grade students who attended kindergarten in one school system in East Tennessee. Using a quantitative design, this study included the first-grade Terra Nova scores from 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. Scores obtained by first-grade students who did not receive Open Court Reading® in kindergarten (2001 and 2002) were compared with first-grade scores obtained by students who …

Bringing Literature To Life For Sixth Grade "Reluctant Readers": A Collaborative, Participatory Study Using Theatre For Young Audiences Experiences To Address Aliteracy, Wayne Brinda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the current disenchantment toward reading literature among adolescents, this study explored if an Artistic Director of a Theatre for Young Audiences could lead the transformation of aliterate, sixth grade "reluctant readers" into becoming engaged readers of literature? These students have the basic skills to read, but choose not to read for a variety of reasons. The study used the intervention of specific, collaborative theatrical strategies, which are alternative approaches to traditional middle school reading pedagogy. The strategies included rehearsal techniques, organizing small group "Production Teams," preparing for and experiencing a theatrical adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, and actively …

A Comparison Of Decontextualized And Contextualized Reading Skills In Persons With Severe Aphasia, Carey Smith Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Decontextualized And Contextualized Reading Skills In Persons With Severe Aphasia, Carey Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A repeated measures comparative design compared the reading comprehension accuracy scores of three participants across two conditions: Condition A -- Decontextualized Stimulus Reading Task (DSRT), resembling traditional reading therapy, and Condition B -- Contextual Choice Reading Conversation (CCRC) with a communication partner. In the DSRT condition, participants read a sentence-length question prior to selecting one of 3-to-5 printed responses with no supports. In CCRC, partners presented graphic sentence stimuli representing conversational questions and response choices with the following supports: simultaneous auditory input, supplemental drawings or gestures, natural repetitions, consistent topic, and conversational order. Experimental conditions were administered in counterbalanced order …

Latinate Word Parts And Vocabulary:Contrasts Among Three Groups Comprisingthe Community College Preparatory Reading Class, Tom Bellomo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students enrolled in a college preparatory reading class at one particular community college were categorized based on language origin. Native English speaking students comprised one group and foreign students formed two additional groups--students whose language origin was Latin-based (i.e. Romance languages) and students whose language origin was not Latin-based (i.e. Japanese). A pretest assessment measure was used to quantify the extent that pre-existing knowledge of Latinate word parts and morphologically complex vocabulary differed among groups based on language origin. The identical instrument served as a posttest to measure the extent that direct instruction in morphological analysis resulted in change among …
