Perceptions Of Georgia Elementary School Principals In Relation To Education Reform And The A+ Education Reform Act Of 2000, Doris Elizabeth Newton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the study, the researcher investigated the role perceptions of Georgia elementary school principals after the implementation of A+ Education Reform Act of 2000. Principals are being held accountable for making significant changes with in their schools. The reform movement may make the principal's job more demanding since new responsibilities have been added and few or none have been taken away. Demands that are now being placed on principals are such that few people are willing to step up and take on those responsibilities. Principals, as building administrators, have firsthand knowledge of the positive and negative impacts A+ Education Reform …

This study was conducted to identify Georgia high school principals' perceptions of student diversity. The student demographics of many Georgia school districts and schools are changing rapidly, while some school districts and schools have not experienced much, if any, demographic change. As a result, it is important for principals to be aware of what other principals perceive as advantages and disadvantages, the types of policies/programs that impact principals in regard to student diversity as well as to be familiar with artifactual evidence that may represent an appreciation or awareness of student diversity. The data displayed in this study was gathered …

Controllability, Observability And Realizability, Inna N. Smith Dec 2005

Controllability, Observability And Realizability, Inna N. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this research project, we analyze three important concepts of the control theory, including controllability, observability and realizability. In particular, we analyze the theory of and solutions to linear time systems, continuous and discrete time systems, time-varying systems, and first-order matrix Sylvester systems. Examples and sample computed calculations are provided for both uncontrolled and controlled systems. We also develop a new method for computing the approximate values of matrix exponentials, and use this to estimate solutions to initial value problems.

Vegetation, temperature, and rainfall data were collected and compared with female home range. Reproductive data were collected for …

Agrarian Impressions, Barney M. Durrence Dec 2005

Agrarian Impressions, Barney M. Durrence

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The images and words assembled in this thesis describe and relate experiences from my past that seem necessary to understanding my current body of ceramic and mixed media sculptures. As the title Agrarian Impressions implies, the stoneware sculptures are based upon memories from growing up on a self-sufficent farm. In addition to my functional work, my sculptures reference tools and machines used to aid the production and harvest of crops and troughs and animal feeders. Problem solving abilities learned long ago and which sometime appear as humorous make-do solutions, reflect the confidence farming has given me to take chances. In …

Current Parent Involvement Practices In Georgia Title I Schools As Reported By Title I District-Level School Administrators, Martha Massey Mcbride Dec 2005

Current Parent Involvement Practices In Georgia Title I Schools As Reported By Title I District-Level School Administrators, Martha Massey Mcbride

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current parent involvement practices in Georgia Title I schools as reported by Title I district-level school administrators are described in this quantitative study. Data gathered describe strategies, means of communication, barriers, personnel, and staff development impacting parent involvement. The researcher found that, although districts employ a variety of research-based strategies to engage parents, only half of the surveyed strategies had been used with any degree of frequency. This is possibly attributable to the finding that almost two-thirds of the participants had five or fewer years Title I administration experience and that many districts had not provided teacher compensation or …

Impact Of Labeling, Legislation, And Accommodations On The Academic Achievement Of African American Students With Learning Disabilities, Kimberly Suress Gaiters-Fields Dec 2005

Impact Of Labeling, Legislation, And Accommodations On The Academic Achievement Of African American Students With Learning Disabilities, Kimberly Suress Gaiters-Fields

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last three decades, public schools have positively contemplated the concepts of mainstreaming, least restrictive environment and inclusion and have begun to serve more students with disabilities in K-12 general edcuation classes (Hicks-Coolick & Kurtz, 1996). There has been a corresponding increase in the number of students with disabilities who attend college and universities. However, at the postsecondary level, issues of educating students with disabilities are often different than those affecting K-12 education, and the instructional climate is much more challenging. Therefore, this trend calls for a more systematic method of assessing needed accommodations for diverse learning needs. The …

Odds ratios assessed relationships between receipt of health information and activity, diet, and nutrition for normal-weight and overweight students; odds ratios also assessed associations between BMI and diet and activity behaviors. Post-hoc analyses were also conducted. Students who received health …

Reading Through Brown Eyes: Toward Developing A Culturally Congruent Reading Curriculum, Clara Taylor Dec 2005

Reading Through Brown Eyes: Toward Developing A Culturally Congruent Reading Curriculum, Clara Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This inquiry examined the reading motivations of African American middle grade males and investigated why some African American males are more successful academically in reading than others. This investigative pathway traveled through the possible interconnected barriers relative to reading achievement and reading motivation using the research strategy of critical narrative inquiry and the theoretical lens of critical race theory. Simultaneously, this qualitative analysis investigated racial/ethnic identity as it relates to background, popular culture, and learning styles as motivational factors for engaging African American males in reading and the learning process. African American, middle-grade males guided this path of exploration in …

Sponge Community Structure And Anti-Predator Defenses On Temperate Reefs Of The South Atlantic Bight, Richard Robert Ruzicka Dec 2005

Sponge Community Structure And Anti-Predator Defenses On Temperate Reefs Of The South Atlantic Bight, Richard Robert Ruzicka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The interaction between predation and anti-predator defenses of prey is important in shaping community structure in all ecosystems. This study examined the relationship between sponge predation and the distribution of sponge anti-predator defenses on temperate reefs in the South Atlantic Bight. Significant differences in the distribution of sponge species, sponge densities, and densities of sponge predators were documented across two adjacent reef habitats. Significant differences also occurred in the distribution of sponge chemical and structural defenses with chemical deterrence significantly greater in sponges associated with the habitat having higher predation intensity. Structural defenses, although effective in some instances, appear to …

Perception And Reality: An Examination Of American Print Advertising, Angela Rose Ryczkowski Dec 2005

Perception And Reality: An Examination Of American Print Advertising, Angela Rose Ryczkowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I contend current American print advertising relies on the objectification of the body, both male and female, in conjunction with the use of utopian ideals to sell products. The nature of the print ad and mass media is such that they gratuitously inform our cultures ideas on gender and normalcy. By depicting unrealistic images of normalcy and unattainable representations of beauty, advertising not only creates consumer anxiety to purchase products beyond economic means, but also to manipulate our bodies unnaturally, and it creates tension in relations between genders. As a Graphic Designer, I strive to not only reverse this process …

Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Impacts On Herbaceous And Woody Vegetation In Southeastern Georgia, Jessica R. Brzyski Oct 2005

Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Impacts On Herbaceous And Woody Vegetation In Southeastern Georgia, Jessica R. Brzyski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

North American beavers are considered ecosystem engineers. Their activities can quickly and drastically alter habitat properties and perhaps permit highly aggressive colonizing plants, notably non-native species, to invade and potentially dominate. This study examined if beavers in southeastern Georgia have an effect on the terrestrial plant community. Sampling areas included beaver modified (N=9) and nearby but relatively non-impacted riparian habitat (N=9) in a matched pairs design. Vegetation surveys were performed in spring and summer. Species richness was calculated for herbs, vines, woody seedlings, and woody vegetation. Richness of herbaceous vegetation was higher at distances closer to shore while richness of …

Effects Of Fire On The Ectoparasites Of Small Mammals In Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Habitats, Todd N. Nims Sep 2005

Effects Of Fire On The Ectoparasites Of Small Mammals In Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Habitats, Todd N. Nims

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I tested the hypothesis that fire significantly decreases prevalence and abundance of ectoparasites and therefore increases the condition of small mammals in longleaf pine habitats. I trapped two areas with paired burned and unburned sites in east central Georgia during 2002 2003. I collected 190 mammals from 9 species and recovered 32 ectoparasite species. I found little overlap in mammal species between paired sites. The overall chance for any mammal of having an ectoparasite was significantly greater on unburned sites (87.7% prevalence on burned vs. 100% unburned). There was no significant relationship between the number of individual ectoparasites on a …

Relationship Between Conviction Rates Of Child Abuse Perpetrators And Forensic Medical Examinations Performed By Trained Versus Non-Trained Examiners On Victims Of Child Sexual Abuse, Leila Smith Bragg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thorough and detailed forensic medical examinations on sexually abused children can result in findings that make stronger cases against alleged perpetrators involved in child sexual abuse. A retrospective chart review was conducted of 1561 child abuse cases occurring in the Middle Judicial Circuit of Georgia during a 3-year period. Charts were reviewed to assess whether or not the child received a forensic medical examination and if the examination was performed by a trained or a non-trained forensic examiner. Court conviction data were obtained from the office of the district attorney in order to compare conviction rates to the forensic medical …

Home Range And Provisioning Use Of Semi-Free-Ranging Ringtailed Lemurs (Lemur Catta), Jennifer Ann Savage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ringtailed lemur (Lemur catta) population on St. Catherines Island (SCI) may serve as a model system for reintroduction. Free-ranging troops of ringtailed lemurs have been managed on SCI since 1985 and are monitored and provisioned daily. There has been no assessment of the effects of provisioning or seasonal dependence on provisioning to date. Ringtailed lemur troop home ranges and use of provisions were quantified to examine seasonal patterns and changes in relation to habitat quality of the home range. Activity, ranging behavior, and provisioning use were monitored for one year. Habitat assessment of forage species was conducted through stratified …

Connectives And Causal Relatedness In Expository Text, Benjamin G. Simpkins Jul 2005

Connectives And Causal Relatedness In Expository Text, Benjamin G. Simpkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The combined influence of causal connectives and varying levels of causal relatedness on online and offline comprehension of expository texts was investigated. The current hypothesis was that causal connectives would encourage elaborative processing and online generation of bridging inferences, particularly in the moderately to low causally related sentence pairs. This was predicted because past research has noted causal connectives capacity to elicit generation of inferences online. Connectives were not predicted to encourage inference generation in the higher-related items because the causal bridging inference should be obvious to the reader. To test this, a new set of 24 expository items was …

Transitive Inference And Commonly Coded Stimuli, William T. Suits Jul 2005

Transitive Inference And Commonly Coded Stimuli, William T. Suits

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This experiment examined whether stimuli that were commonly coded through association with similar outcomes would be treated differently when used in a transitive inference (TI) task than stimuli not commonly coded. A TI task was used in which stimuli were presented to pigeons as pairs (A+B-, B+C-, C+D-, D+E-), and a single pair of stimuli was presented as a test (BD). Pigeons were assigned to four groups in which stimuli were associated with one another along the linear array. For the Within Common Coding Group, the outcomes were arranged so that B and D both received the same outcome (when …

Effect Of Orthotics On Dynamic Balance In Participants With Pes Planus And Subacute Lateral Ankle Sprains, Amanda Dawn Antinori Jul 2005

Effect Of Orthotics On Dynamic Balance In Participants With Pes Planus And Subacute Lateral Ankle Sprains, Amanda Dawn Antinori

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lateral ankle sprains are common athletic injuries which lead to a decrease in balance via proprioceptive damage around the joint. Orthotics have been shown to help increase balance following acute ankle sprains. This research focused on the effect of orthotics on balance in participants with unilateral, subacute lateral ankle sprains and pes planus. Ten participants (half randomly assigned to orthotics group) performed balance testing twice (pre- and 5 minute-post) on each leg of the Biodex Balance System. A 2 X 2 ANOVA with Repeated Measures was used to evaluate the treatment (orthotics, no orthotics) over time (pre-orthotic, post-orthotic). The results …

Effects Of Exercise And A Brief Education Intervention On Social Physique Anxiety In College Students, Lisa Anne Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body image concerns that create anxiety in social settings [social physique anxiety (SPA)] has shown to influence behaviors of college women (Crawford & Eklund, 1994). There have been attempts to lower SPA among college students by utilizing physical activity or administrating an education or cognitive-behavioral intervention to decrease SPA (Bane, 1996; ODea and Abraham, 1999; Zabinski, Calfas, Gehrman, Wilfley, & Sallis, 2001.) Interventions take time and time in todays society is limited. Brief or time-limited interventions have shown to be beneficial, and ultra-brief therapy (treatments with six or fewer sessions) has shown to be beneficial to a substantial amount of …

Becoming Multicultural Teachers: An Exploration Of Transformation In White Female Elementary Educators, Lee Woodham Digiovanni May 2005

Becoming Multicultural Teachers: An Exploration Of Transformation In White Female Elementary Educators, Lee Woodham Digiovanni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the population of the United States becomes more diverse, and the teaching force remains predominantly White, multicultural education becomes more and more important. Many White elementary educators, however, treat multicultural education in a very cursory, shallow way. Some educators, however, have moved beyond a cursory approach to multicultural education. Utilizing feminist standpoint theory informed by postpositivist realism and critical race theory, this study examines the experiences of three White female elementary educators in the same school system in the Metropolitan Atlanta area who have moved beyond cursory implementation of multiculutral teaching. Potential participants were screened using the White Racial …

Influence Of Outcome Expectancy On Optimisim, Pessimism, Anxiety And Self-Confidence In Collegiate Football Players, Tiffany D. Watson May 2005

Influence Of Outcome Expectancy On Optimisim, Pessimism, Anxiety And Self-Confidence In Collegiate Football Players, Tiffany D. Watson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Expectations are instrumental in predicting performance quality (Solomon, 2002). According to the expectancy theory, what is expected to happen often does (Chase & Lirgg, 1997). Often, the underdog, or unexpected winner, will defeat the more likely winner creating questions as to the validity of the expectancy theory. Psychological variables related to expectations may contribute to the ability of the underdog to succeed in unexpected situations. Optimism refers to a positive expectation or perception of the future, and pessimism refers to a negative expectation or perception (Scheier & Carver, 1993). Anxiety, though often given a negative connotation, has shown facilitative effects …

Relationships were found with Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale scores and the CDP Comfort scale for all participants and for all male participants. …

Pregnancy Intendedness In A High Risk Group: Reassessing Its Meaning, Mary Miller May 2005

Pregnancy Intendedness In A High Risk Group: Reassessing Its Meaning, Mary Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The traditional framework of the National Survey of Family Growth classification scheme works well for most married couples, but is less plausible for minority women who are labeled as high-risk. Surveys that are being used to assess the National Family Growth are limited classification schemes because they have failed to reveal the complex nature associated with defining pregnancies in high-risk groups. This research was designed as a qualitative study, which used semi-structured, open-ended interviews to explore concepts of pregnancy. Five qualitative dimensions of pregnancy intendedness emerged: socioconception desire for pregnancy, forced preparation, fertility behavior and expectation, post-socioconception desire for pregnancy, …

Effect Of Sex On The Coordination Patterns Of Athletes During Dynamic Activities, Corrie Lynn Barnett May 2005

Effect Of Sex On The Coordination Patterns Of Athletes During Dynamic Activities, Corrie Lynn Barnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current research has largely focused on the specific actions of individual joints while neglecting the overall pattern of motion and interaction between body segments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare coordination patterns between man and woman collegiate athletes during static and dynamic activities. Thirty healthy collegiate division-one man and woman athletes participated. They completed a battery of tasks, including the single-leg squat and lateral step-downs while three-dimensional kinematics of the pelvis, thigh, knee, and shank were collected. Using a dynamic systems analysis, coordination patterns were calculated and statistically compared between the sexes. Additionally the stability of the …

Using Multicultural Literature To Develop Empathy And Compassion In Preservice Teachers: A First Step In Preparing Culturally Responsive Teachers, Lyndall Harrison Warren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study explored possibilities for change in the Early Childhood Teacher Education Program in the John H. Lounsbury School of Education at Georgia College & State University (GC&SU). Concern for the lack of diversity in the teaching population increased when the demographics for preservice teachers were examined. Reports by Marilyn Cochran-Smith, Danne Davis, and Kim Fries (2004) show that there is an overwhelming presence of whiteness in teacher education. These data show that, depending upon the institution and location, 80-93% of the students enrolled in collegiate education programs are white (Cochran-Smith, Davis, & Fries, 2004). These phenomena are represented in …
