Maine lakes and streams serve as significant sources of public water supply, serving 40% of the population. Drought affects surface water resources by reducing water quantity and altering water quality, for example by reducing inputs of materials from the watershed and increasing water residence times. The 2001-2002 drought was the worst in Maine in over thirty years, and it exposed deficiencies in current water resources planning and management. Fisheries research on the green sea urchin in Maine has been limited despite its importance to the state's fishing industry. The objective of this thesis was to generate critical information for the management and monitoring of the Maine green sea urchin fishery. In particular there are three main areas of interest: (1) an investigation of biological reference points; (2) spatial analysis and biomass estimation, and (3) the development of a simulation framework approach to determine an optimal sampling strategy for the fishery-independent survey program. Soil nail walls have been used as retaining structures worldwide since the early 1970s. The technology is particularly well suited for constructing walls in areas with limited overhead clearance and maneuvering room for heavy equipment, such as highway bridge underpasses. However, designers have been reluctant to experiment with soil nailing in areas with cold-weather climates and frost-susceptible soils, due to the lack of quantifiable data on the behavior of these walls when subjected to freezing conditions.
