Siphon Removal Of Cohesionless Materials., Syeed Mahbub. Ullah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the removal of cohesionless sediments by siphoning. A significant part of this study involves the analysis of equilibrium scour hole dimensions under different siphon flow characteristics. Scour holes of the sediments were formed by a siphon tube of three different sizes (9.65, 13.86 and 20.4 mm) positioned vertically at different positions relative to the surface of the sand bed. A total of 174 tests were performed, where the position of the tube ranged from 101.6 mm below the original bed to 6.4 mm above it. The latter part of the study investigates the heights for critical and …

Nonlinear Deformations Of Laterally Loaded Piles Embedded In Stiff Clay Located Below The Water Table: Sensitivity Analysis., Deddy. Suwarno Jan 2003

Nonlinear Deformations Of Laterally Loaded Piles Embedded In Stiff Clay Located Below The Water Table: Sensitivity Analysis., Deddy. Suwarno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensitivity analysis is one of the methods predicting how sensitive a soil-pile interactive system will behave under a lateral loading, whether a horizontal force or a bending moment, due to the changes of the design variables. For a civil engineer, it is important to know what is the deformation at the top of the pile foundation to be considered for the upper structure. Therefore, the sensitivity analysis in this thesis focuses on the changes of the displacement and the angle of flexural rotation at the top of the pile due to the changes of the design variables which are the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the investigation is to study the strength of bolted ring-type connections used for solid-round leg members of all-welded steel towers subjected to tensile loads and to determine whether the current practice of ignoring the eccentricity of the connection can be justified or not. The load carrying capacity and maximum gap were determined experimentally and by finite element analysis. A total of eighteen specimens divided into three groups were tested. Group 1 consisted of six specimens of 25.4 mm (1.0 in.) leg size and 22.2 mm (7/8 in.) bolt size with no girls, group 2 consisted of six …

Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Using Innovative Ductile Composite Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Systems., Wael Fathy. Ragheb Jan 2003

Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Using Innovative Ductile Composite Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Systems., Wael Fathy. Ragheb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the technique of external strengthening of reinforced concrete beams using externally bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials has been established as an effective tool for rehabilitating and strengthening reinforced concrete beams, it is still suffering from some drawbacks. A significant part of these drawbacks is attributed to the characteristics of currently available FRP strengthening systems. This study deals with the development and evaluation of the effectiveness of two innovative ductile FRP systems for flexural/shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams. The systems are fabrics that are hybrid of glass and carbon fibers and designed to have the potential to avoid …

Analysis Of Circular Geogrid-Reinforced Soil-Steel Bridge., Andre John Kendall. Bom Jan 2003

Analysis Of Circular Geogrid-Reinforced Soil-Steel Bridge., Andre John Kendall. Bom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A finite element analysis, by means of ABAQUS, has been undertaken to study the effects of inserting geogrid layers in the soil cover of a circular soil-steel bridge with a diameter of 7.6 m. Two loads are applied to the soil-steel bridge: gravity, as well as a truck load defined by the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code design truck. Because experimentation and design of geogrids involve the application of a strip load, it is necessary to apply a strip load at the soil surface. Therefore, the rear two axles of the truck, separated by 1.2 m, are the largest loads …

Submergence Effects On Local Scour., Md Rajib. Ahsan Jan 2003

Submergence Effects On Local Scour., Md Rajib. Ahsan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study discussed herein focuses on the local scour created in a cohesionless sand bed by a plane turbulent wall jet with varying levels of submergence from 1 to 20. From the observations of 40 experiments the study reveals that the formation of unstable scour processes, which can be short and long-term in nature, depends on the water depth available above the mound apex for a given initial jet velocity. In case of stable scour process, the growth of the scour hole dimensions follows a linear relation with the logarithm of time beyond which the rate of change in the …

Identification Of Dynamic Characteristics Of Linear Systems., Md. Mizanur Rahman Jan 2003

Identification Of Dynamic Characteristics Of Linear Systems., Md. Mizanur Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Structures, built in active earthquake zones, can be subjected to damaging dynamic loading. The health monitoring process for these structures is essential. When a structure is submitted to repetitive moderate earthquake events, it is expected to accumulate certain damage. The variation of the dynamic characteristics can be an indicator of the damage extension in a structure. The procedure of evaluating the dynamic characteristics of a structure is referred to as system identification. This investigation focuses on the analysis of different techniques for identifying linear structures with available recorded responses during earthquake events. These approaches are: (i) Fourier transform approach; (ii) …

Implementation Of The Maturity Method Into Precast Concrete Applications., Alvin. Olar Jan 2003

Implementation Of The Maturity Method Into Precast Concrete Applications., Alvin. Olar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The personnel at Prestressed Systems Incorporated (PSI) suspected that use of the zero slump test cylinders to measure the compressive strength of hollowcore concrete was not reliable. If a test cylinder failed only by a chipped edge while being tested for compressive strength, it was not useful for determining the time at which the prestressing force in the tendons can be transferred into the bed of hollowcore. A more reliable method was sought to quantify the compressive strength of zero slump concrete at the time of tendon release. The method should also provide real-time information on the progress of concrete …

Dynamic Analysis Of Structures With Uncertain Properties., Sudhan Sampad. Banik Jan 2003

Dynamic Analysis Of Structures With Uncertain Properties., Sudhan Sampad. Banik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The properties of engineering structures are variable by nature. This variation affects considerably the dynamic response of structures and this is overlooked in traditional deterministic analysis. The incorporation of statistical variability of structural properties in analysis has been a topic of considerable research for the last thirty years. The determination of statistical measures of a desired response variable, such as the natural frequencies, maximum displacement, or stresses has been a primary goal of this study. The objective of this research work is to determine the quantitative effect of uncertainties on the dynamic response of a structure with uncertain parameters through …
