A 2-Digit Multidimensional Logarithmic Number System Filterbank Processor For A Digital Hearing Aid., Hongbo (Jennifer). Li Jan 2003

A 2-Digit Multidimensional Logarithmic Number System Filterbank Processor For A Digital Hearing Aid., Hongbo (Jennifer). Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the design, implementation, and evaluation of a filterbank for digital hearing aids using a Multidimensional Logarithmic Number System (MDLNS). Hearing loss is a function of both frequency and input level. In a typical digital hearing instrument, the hearing loss compensation is performed by separating the incoming sound into several frequency bands which are then compressed to allow the amplification of low level signals while maintaining the amplitude of high level signals. The demands of low power consumption and small size have led to a number of advances in algorithms, semiconductor technologies and system architectures for completely-in-canal (CIC) …

A Biomechanical Model Of The Spine To Predict Trunk Muscle Forces: Optimizing The Relationship Between Spinal Stability And Spinal Loading., Stephen Hadley Morgan Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop an optimization model of the spine that, incorporating a measure of spinal stability as a constraint, allowed for realistic predictions of trunk muscle and spine compression forces. A 3-dimensional, 52 muscle, single joint model of the lumbar spine was developed and tested in situations of pure trunk flexor and lateral bend moments. Spinal stability, about each anatomical axis, was calculated at the L4/L5 spinal joint. Estimates of the optimal level of spinal stability, in a given loading situation, obtained through the use of regression equations developed from experimental findings, were utilized as …

Authorization-Enhanced Security Framework For Ogsa Support., Haiyan. Cheng Jan 2003

Authorization-Enhanced Security Framework For Ogsa Support., Haiyan. Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Security plays an important role for a large distributed system in an open community. Without enough knowledge about the user, it is hard to make access decision to the local resources. Current Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) uses a trusted third party, called Certificate Authority (CA), to check the identity of the users. The assumption of PKI is that every entity trusts CA absolutely and equally. This is also a weakness of PKI. The security problem in a Single-Sign-On (SSO) environment is more difficult to manage. Most of the current SSO security approach relies heavily on the pre-established trust relationship. This …

Participants included 194 female undergraduate students who completed a questionnaire assessing exercise participation, the Body Image Ideals Questionnaire (BIQ), the Revised Restraint Scale (RRS), the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ), and the Exercise …

Characterization Of A Novel Human Cap2 Interacting Protein: Neuronal Calcium Binding Protein 1 (Necab1)., Emilio P. Mottillo Jan 2003

Characterization Of A Novel Human Cap2 Interacting Protein: Neuronal Calcium Binding Protein 1 (Necab1)., Emilio P. Mottillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The actin cytoskeleton is implicated in numerous processes such as cellular division, migration, endocytosislexocytosis, and more recently synaptic plasticity. Important players in controlling cytoskeletal rearrangements are the Cyclase Associated Proteins (CAPs) which are thought to link cell signalling to the dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton, via sequestration of monomeric actin subunits. CAPs are conserved throughout evolution and possess conserved functional domains. Previous studies have suggested a link between CAP proteins and vesicle trafficking and this study focussed on characterizing binding partners of human CAPs. Using a two hybrid screen of a human adult brain cDNA library, a novel human CAP …

In addition, a commercial propane fuel additive blend was introduced and its flame speed compared to instrument grade propane. …

Document Analysis Using Image Processing Techniques., Yi. Lin Jan 2003

Document Analysis Using Image Processing Techniques., Yi. Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Image thresholding and page segmentation are necessary components of any image understanding and recognition system. In order for an OCR to function properly, texts in a document image has to be isolated and then fed to the OCR for recognition. This requires development of a robust and accurate page segmentation technique. In any page segmentation technique, a preprocessing step in terms of image restoration and thresholding is needed. This thesis therefore concentrates on the development of efficient and robust image thresholding and page segmentation algorithms. In this thesis, three efficient contrast enhancement techniques are proposed that in conjunction with the …

A Systems Analysis And Design Approach For Modelling Of Participatory Manufacturing Systems., Ruth Jill. Urbanic Jan 2003

A Systems Analysis And Design Approach For Modelling Of Participatory Manufacturing Systems., Ruth Jill. Urbanic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was aimed at understanding the effects of human worker attributes within the manufacturing system environment; hence, a model is needed to provide insights into the sensitivities of a manufacturing system. To this end, a framework has been developed which is valid for different perspectives and environments. A matrix methodology has been created that assesses the three levels of manufacturing complexity: product complexity to process complexity and operational complexity. The systematic approach has lead to the development of an objective measure of complexity, which can be used to "mathematically" show tradeoffs at each level. A model …

Salary Determination In The National Hockey League: The Development Of An Equitable Player Compensation Model., Jess Charles. Dixon Jan 2003

Salary Determination In The National Hockey League: The Development Of An Equitable Player Compensation Model., Jess Charles. Dixon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nowhere else in North America is the performance of an employee so readily visible and so easily measured than in the sport of professional ice hockey (Banister, 1997). "Although the performance of professional athletes may be objectively measured and compared by the vast quantities of statistics compiled by sports analysts, controversy still surrounds whether their individual efforts justify their salaries" (Banister, 1997, p. 47). NHL salaries have become so disparate in recent years that it is quite common for certain 'marquee' players to earn 10--20 times the salary of other players competing on the same team (Banister, 1997). With 50% …

Photoblur (Original Writing, Novel)., John Sigurd. Gudmundson Jan 2003

Photoblur (Original Writing, Novel)., John Sigurd. Gudmundson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The idea that context shapes text is traceable to Aristotle who identified poetry or "making" with the form or plot that best appeals to audience expectations. Today's complex world, with its host of competing truths, requires texts that reflect this confusion. My novel reacts to this context, appealing to expectations in both form and story. What are those expectations? The current appetite for shorter texts and the popularity of the short novel might be explained by a growing alliterate population, an educated group who value books, but who have little time to read them. Yet reading hasn't declined altogether. Current …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitric oxide is involved in many physiological processes including vascular control, immune responses and neurotransmission under physiological conditions. Many functions of NO are triggered by the formation of its metabolite, S-nitrosothiol. S-nitrosothiols play an important role in the delivery, storage and transport of NO. In addition, they regulate the activity of a variety of proteins and enzymes. The first part of my study is focused on studying the regulatory role of S-nitrosothiol. In this study, S-nitrosothiols including S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) have been demonstrated to regulate the activity of a key protein in plasma, fibrinogen, without chemically modifying it. GSNO and a …

The Construction Of Ecstasy As A Social Problem In Toronto Newspapers (Ontario)., Sean Cristin. Miller Jan 2003

The Construction Of Ecstasy As A Social Problem In Toronto Newspapers (Ontario)., Sean Cristin. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the early 1990's there has been a considerable amount of attention given to ecstasy and raves in Toronto. This study examines newspaper coverage of ecstasy through a content analysis of all articles about ecstasy appearing in the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail and National Post from 1988 to 2002. Using a "contextual" constructionist perspective, claims-making activities of various individuals and/or groups is examined. Claims are contrasted with "objective evidence" to illustrate their constructed nature. It is concluded that ecstasy use in Toronto is not the "social problem" it is made out to be in newspaper accounts. A short discussion …

Variation Of Bloom Filters Applied In Distributed Query Optimization., Yue (Amber). Zhang Jan 2003

Variation Of Bloom Filters Applied In Distributed Query Optimization., Yue (Amber). Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Distributed query processing is important for Distributed Database Systems. Through the past years, the research focus in distributed query processing has been on how to realize join operations with different operators such as semi-join and Bloom Filter. Experiments show that using bloom filters, the hash-semijoin, almost always does better than semi-join for the query processing. However as long as you use bloom filter, you cannot avoid collisions. So in order to get the cheaper processing, some of the past work uses two or more bloom filters to do the hash-semijoin. However several factors still affect the cost and optimization result. …

Depth Recovery Using A Plenoptic Camera., Mohamed. Amtoun Jan 2003

Depth Recovery Using A Plenoptic Camera., Mohamed. Amtoun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Depth recovery is a central problem in Computer Vision. Stereopsis is one of the most extensively investigated techniques amidst the approaches addressing it. Though sufficiently accurate, stereopsis is highly dependent on the success of point correspondence, an ill-posed problem that is known to suffer from a number of underlying difficulties. Single-lens stereo systems emerged recently as an effective means to thwart some of the problems of correspondence. The plenoptic camera in particular, has a special image formation geometry that claims to resolve the correspondence ambiguities and simplify depth recovery. However, to our knowledge, prior to this work, no study has …
