Inbreeding In Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri): Analysis Of Lethal Temperature Tolerence, Jospeh L. Mangiardi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inbreeding in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was evaluated in relation to an altered environment (upper lethal temperature 29 C), at four levels of inbreeding. At each level of inbreeding mean time to death for inbred, female-outbred half-sib, male-outbred half-sib and outbred families were evaluated. In all cases inbreds were less resistant to lethal temperature than were respective outbred families. Analysis of variance 9Snedecor’s F) and multiple range analysis (Tukey’s “w” procedure) provided inference limitations. Inbred fish were 82% less resistant to lethal temperature as comared to the respective outbred family at 50% inbreeding and 19% less resistant at 25% inbreeding. …

Determination Of Rnase Phenotype In Winter Barley Populations, Thomas Keith Blake Jan 1979

Determination Of Rnase Phenotype In Winter Barley Populations, Thomas Keith Blake

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selection for high levels of freeze resistance in winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) has resulted in development of cultivars which: 1) contain low RNase I activity in young shoot tissue and 2) a single RNase activity band in expanding leaf tissue at Rf 0.08. By contrast, seedlings of less-hardy cultivars typically have; 1) two RNase polymorphs (Rf=0.54 and 0.58) in young shoot tissue and 2) fours polymorphs (Rf-054, 0.58, 0.64 and 0.81) in expanding leaf samples. All enzymes migrate toward the anode (ph 7.9) and only the fastest moving band is common to expanded leaves in both groups of …

A Doppler Radar Controlled Traffic Indicator, Dennis L. Carr Jan 1979

A Doppler Radar Controlled Traffic Indicator, Dennis L. Carr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traffic hazards on our highways are decreasing with the onset of new safety regulations, lower speed limits and highway design procedures. Unfortunately, economics prevent their complete elimination. New roadways are made safer while old roadways are pretty much ignored. Obstructions such as trees which restrict a motorist's view can be removed but it could be a monumental task to relocate other obstructions such as buildings, or to get the public to agree to the expense of leveling hills which lie too close to crossroads or private drives. Should there be an obstruction such as a hills close to a driveway, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Supplementation of individual amino acids to low protein swine diets is of current interest in the swine industry due to attempts to reduce feed costs. Although cereal grains provide the majority of the total protein requirements for swine, the remainder must be supplied either from natural protein supplements or synthetic amino acids. Research has shown amino acid content and balance are of greater importance than total protein alone in meeting nutrient needs. Because of this, a great deal of effort has been directed toward determining single amino acid requirements of swine. Research of this nature is complicated by the varying …

The Effects Of Varying Dietary Protein, Calcium And Phosphorus In Starter Diets For Early Weaned Pigs, Wayne Eldon Schiefelbein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Genetic selection by swine producers the past 10 to 15 years has resulted in faster growing, heavier muscled pig. In addition, confinement rearing has placed an increased emphasis upon skeletal development and bone formation. Recent research conducted at Ohio State University indicated that growing swine responded to increasing dietary protein levels if both calcium and phosphorus are also correspondingly increased but maintained at approximately a 1.3:1 ratio. This and other research has led some investigators to believe that the National Research Council's requirements for protein, calcium and phosphorus may not be adequate to support maximum growth and development. Much attention …

Demographic And Social Consequences Of A Shift From A Growth To A Stationary Population Model For South Dakota Counties : 1960-1970, Sharon Kunkel Jan 1979

Demographic And Social Consequences Of A Shift From A Growth To A Stationary Population Model For South Dakota Counties : 1960-1970, Sharon Kunkel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The investigation of this problem is important since little empirical research has been done in the area of zero population growth as a result of controlled fertility and its consequences. Historically, the only other country to reach such a stage in development was France in the 1930's, and this stage was relatively short-lived. Consequently, one cannot turn to historical precedents for insights into the consequences of a no-growth population. In fact, most of the literature written on the subject is mainly conjecture. This problem is also timely since it is projected that zero population growth will soon be a reality …

The Role Of Allelopathy On The Vegetational Composition Of Disturbed Sites On The Samuel H. Ordway Memorial Prairie, Randy C. Bartels

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The presence of large numbers of cattle in prairie sites can lead to the trampling and destruction of native vegetation in some areas. These damaged, or disturbed sites are typically invaded by a variety of undesirable alien plant species. Many of the alien plant species possess allopathic mechanisms. These allopathic mechanisms enable the alien species to dominate the disturbed sites, and prevent the re-establishment of native plant species. Attempts are currently underway to preserve remaining tracts of native prairie in South Dakota. The Samuel H. Ordway, Jr. Memorial Prairie in McPherson county is one such tract, and is the research …
