The Beauty Of Enjoyment: Aesthetics In Ecclesiastes, Mark Andrew Crumbliss Aug 2015

The Beauty Of Enjoyment: Aesthetics In Ecclesiastes, Mark Andrew Crumbliss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an attempt to discover what Qohelet may have had in mind when he used the term "yapeh" Qohelet does not present his theory of aesthetics in an overt way, but it may be possible to infer what he could have in mind via analysis of his text. Beauty for Qohelet is something that he experiences firsthand, rather than a concept or principle one could memorize and then have at one's service, such as a mathematical concept "2+2-4." Beauty for Qohelet is something which comes from God, but it appears that God gives the gift of beauty to …

The Character Of God In The Speeches Of Yahweh In The Book Of Job, John David Telgren Jun 2006

The Character Of God In The Speeches Of Yahweh In The Book Of Job, John David Telgren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Considering Job in its canonical form with special attention to the lawsuit and the mythopoeic features, this thesis investigates the portrayal of God in his speeches as a corrective to Job and his friends' erroneous view of God. Their erroneous view is based on the concept of violent and militant divine power that defeated a rival chaos deity before the foundation of the world and established order, justice, and community. Job and his friends believed that just rule, which is to preserve community order, is naturally based on the same violent power with which the world was created. Therefore, any …

The Text Of Romans In Sahidic Coptic, David Kneip Jun 2004

The Text Of Romans In Sahidic Coptic, David Kneip

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The last fifty years have seen something of a downturn in the number of studies undertaken concerning the Coptic biblical text. Recognizing the lack of attention the Coptic biblical text has received, and also in light of the growing manuscript evidence in the various Coptic dialects, many scholars have begun to call for new studies in the Coptic biblical text, especially the New Testament. This study takes a first step in the direction toward a new critical edition of the Pauline corpus by investigating anew the three most complete manuscripts of Romans known to the scholarly world.

The Theology Of Atonement Sacrifice In Leviticus 1, 4:1-6:7, And 16, Glenn Pemberton Jul 1995

The Theology Of Atonement Sacrifice In Leviticus 1, 4:1-6:7, And 16, Glenn Pemberton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The theology of Old Testament atonement sacrifice is foundational for both Judaism and Christianity. However, despite a consensus on its importance, the theology of atonement sacrifice remains elusive. Scholars differ significantly on the purpose, meaning, and object of atonement, as well as the modus operandi of atonement sacrifice. This study focuses on specific exegetical issues that arise from the primary sources for atonement sacrifice (Leviticus 1:1-17, 4:1-6:7, and 16:1-34) in an attempt to understand the theology of atonement sacrifice.

The Acts Of The Apostles In The Old Georgian Version, Jeffrey Wayne Childers May 1992

The Acts Of The Apostles In The Old Georgian Version, Jeffrey Wayne Childers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

111e Old Georgian version of the Bible is one of many important pieces of the puzzle which textual critics use in their study of the ancient text of scripture. However, its precise role in studying the ancient text remains to be defined, since some critical questions about the nature of the version remain unanswered. Most pressing is the question of the version's translation base, whether Greek, Armenian, or Syriac. Related questions involve the Georgian version's proper place in the history of the New Testament textual tradition. Scholars have yet to reach a consensus regarding the development of that history and …

The Theological Message Of Revelation In Light Of Selected Apocalyptic Symbols, Desmond John Steyn May 1986

The Theological Message Of Revelation In Light Of Selected Apocalyptic Symbols, Desmond John Steyn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The many divergent interpretations of the book of Revelation seem to create a problem concerning the understanding and appreciation of it. Many Christians are disturbed at their seeming inability to understand Revelation, and skeptics use this evidence in order to attack the validity of the Bible.

Meanings Of Šēm And B[Superscript E]Šēm In The Pentateuch, Timothy M. Willis Aug 1984

Meanings Of Šēm And B[Superscript E]Šēm In The Pentateuch, Timothy M. Willis

The concept of "name" (ŠĒM) was very important in Semitic thought, and therefore important in the Old Testament. The New Testament Text Of Today: An Assessment Of Progress Since Westcott And Hort, Steven Charles Singleton Aug 1982

The New Testament Text Of Today: An Assessment Of Progress Since Westcott And Hort, Steven Charles Singleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Westcott and Hort's The New Testament in the Original Greek has profoundly affected all New Testament textual criticism since its publication. Most subsequent textual critics have acknowledged their debt to Westcott and Hort, while believing that Westcott and Hort failed to uncover the original text and that their principles and text must be refined, modified, and improved. Even though a flurry of activity has characterized post-Hortian textual criticism, the question arises again and again: What progress from Wes-tcott-Hort has actually been accomplished?

A Critical Examination Of The New Testament Concept Of Newness Ascribed To The Words Kainós And Néos, Edward Frank Mathews

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The value of word studies has become increasingly clear with the surge of interest in the Biblical kergyms. The terms that make up the message -- no matter what point of view is held regarding it -- are of utmost importance. This is especially true in the case of synonyms such as kainos and néos.

A careful investigation has been made to establish exactly what took place during that special evening meal which Jesus shared with his disciples before his arrest, trial, and execution.

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis May 1956

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nearly all Old Testament theological works include large sections on the nature of men. While these works discuss meanings and usages of such important terms as "body," "soul," and "spirit," they devote very little space to the term "heart." This neglect leaves the impression that the Old Testament has only a passing interest in the part of man's nature which is revealed under the term "heart." Lexical and critical studies also minimize the importance of the term "heart." Franz Delitzsch has the most notable works in the theological field of the Old Testament on the study of the "heart." The …
