Effects Of Self-Pollination In The Genus Pinus, Liz Cole Dec 1980

Effects Of Self-Pollination In The Genus Pinus, Liz Cole

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The problems of self-pollination among trees are a major concern to foresters. Silvicultural practices have an effect on the frequency of self-pollination.For example, a cut, such as a shelterwood or seed tree, reduces the number of individuals in the breeding population and increases the distance between individual trees. This tends to increase the frequency of self-pollination. These effects can either be helpful or harmful depending on the goals of the forester. Therefore, a basic understanding as to the effects of self-pollination on trees is necessary. The point of focus in this paper is the genus, Pinus.

Self-pollination occurs naturally in …

Huntington Lake Recreation Management Composite Plan, Kermit L. Johansson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The existing uses at Huntington Lake have evolved from development of the basin area for timber and hydroelectric generation. As a result of the resource attraction in the 1920's, roads were constructed, allowing an influx of recreation visitors. The scenic beauty of the lake made it a popular area which promoted the formation of resorts and Forest Service recreational facilities. Special use permits for recreation summer homes were later granted by the Forest Service to allow utilization of the lake when relatively few people could make the arduous drive up the narrow mountain road.

The degradation process has been referred to as desertification, desertization, desert encroachment, and desert creep.

A Survey Of Selected Employers And Placement Counselors To Determine Sociocultural Factors In The Work Adjustment Of Navajo Students In Box Elder County, Utah, Dolores M. Keller May 1980

A Survey Of Selected Employers And Placement Counselors To Determine Sociocultural Factors In The Work Adjustment Of Navajo Students In Box Elder County, Utah, Dolores M. Keller

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The primary goal of vocational education is to prepare the student to successfully enter the world of work. While the present educational structure seems to work well for most Anglo-American students, there is evidence that the system is not effective with minority students. For example , in the case of Navajo students in government-sponsored technical schools, the dropout rate (60 percent) suggests that for Native American students there are serious problems in the educational process which need to be investigated and understood.

Because of the sharply different cultural background of the Navajo student a formidable barrier frequently exists between student …

Economic Impacts Of Irrigation Technologies In The Sevier River Basin, Theodore R. Frickel May 1980

Economic Impacts Of Irrigation Technologies In The Sevier River Basin, Theodore R. Frickel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The economic well-being of the semi-arid intermountain area requires efficient use of available water supplies. Agriculture, the major water-consuming industry, depends on irrigation water. The adoption of sprinkler systems that increase irrigation "efficiencies" and increase water available for irrigation upstream may interfere with the "tenure" of downstream water rights. The farmers would like to use the water saved to irrigate additional acreages or crop to provide greater profits.

The problem in letting farmers expand their irrigated acreage is that the individual farmer increases his profits through increased consumptive use. The consequent reduction in return flows reduces the water available to …

Ultrastructural Localization Of Solanidine In Potato Tubers, Shau-Ron Han

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Solanine, the green substance in potato, Solanum tuberosum L., tubers, is a toxic glycoalkaloid that is a potential human health hazard. To control the formation of this glycoalkaloid a greater understanding of its site of synthesis is needed. Labelling of solanidine, a direct precursor in the biosynthesis of solanine, with digitonin may indirectly locate the site of solanine synthesis in tubers. A study using ultrastructural cytochemical techniques was initiated to explore this possibility.

Sprouted tips and peridermal complex (periderm and cortex) tissue were fixed three different ways: (1) glutaraldehyde only, (2) osmium tetroxide and glutaraldehyde, and (3) glutaraldehyde-osmium tetroxide-digitonin mixture. …
