Heterogenous Reduction Of Co2 Over Boron-Rich Alb2, Jose C. Berger
Heterogenous Reduction Of Co2 Over Boron-Rich Alb2, Jose C. Berger
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Evidence suggests that the recent drastic changes in the global climate have been caused by greenhouse gases, especially CO2. As a result, scientists are aiming to develop processes that either minimize the production of these gases or convert them into products of higher value. To that end, the catalytic properties of a two-dimensional boron-rich material were investigated. Herein is reported that such a material can reduce CO2 into benzene, C3 species, and C4 species at relatively low temperatures (225-450 ℃) and pressures (0.38 MPa). Current data suggest that a low-temperature induction period (e.g., 225 ℃) …
A Model Experiment To Investigate The Possibility Of Glyphosate Contamination In St. Kitts And Nevis, Winston Fu
A Model Experiment To Investigate The Possibility Of Glyphosate Contamination In St. Kitts And Nevis, Winston Fu
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide that is used globally to combat the spread of weeds among crops. Not all countries around the world have been using the herbicide. For example, island countries such as Dominica and St. Kitts and Nevis do not use the herbicide on their crops. However, St. Kitts and Nevis imports food and other agricultural products from around the world, leading to the hypothesis that glyphosate is contaminating the soil through those imported products. The aim of this research project was to determine if glyphosate is present in the island country of St. Kitts and Nevis. A …
Development Of A Computer Algorithm For Generation Of Primers For Nucleic Acid Sequence Based Amplification (Nasba), Rohit Karnati
Development Of A Computer Algorithm For Generation Of Primers For Nucleic Acid Sequence Based Amplification (Nasba), Rohit Karnati
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Nucleic acid sequence based amplification (NASBA) is a primer based isothermal method of RNA/DNA amplification. Currently, primer design for NASBA has been restricted to hand creating sequences of oligonucleotides that must follow a set of rules to be compatible for the amplification process. This process of hand-creating primers is prone to error and time intensive. The detection of mutants, post amplification, also offers a benefit in point of care scenarios and the design of hybridization probes for sequences in the region of amplification is also an erroneous and time intensive process. By creating a program to design primers and hybridization …
Self-Assembly Of Squaraine Dyes, Maher A. Qaddoura
Self-Assembly Of Squaraine Dyes, Maher A. Qaddoura
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Squaraine dyes have been a subject of extensive investigations lately due to their wide applications in important technological fields such as bioimaging probes, bioconjucation, second generation photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy, second harmonic generating organic dyes, two-photon absorbing materials with large cross section values, and, finally, photoconducting materials in photovoltaic cells. While a large number of patents and papers has been produced regarding their applications limited work has been done concerning their thermotropic behavior, including their liquid crystalline properties, or correlation of the crystalline structure to both the solid state aggregation and their photophysical properties. In the first chapter of this …
Development Of Novel Dart Tofms Analytical Techniques For The Identification Of Organic Contamination On Spaceflight-Related Substrates And Aqueous Media, Kathleen Loftin
Development Of Novel Dart Tofms Analytical Techniques For The Identification Of Organic Contamination On Spaceflight-Related Substrates And Aqueous Media, Kathleen Loftin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Organic contamination on spaceflight hardware is an ongoing concern for spaceflight safety. In addition, for the goal of analyzing for possible evidence of extra-terrestrial life, it is necessary to consider the presence of terrestrial contamination. This paper will introduce and evaluate a new method using a direct analysis real time (DART) ionization source paired with a high resolution time of flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) for the determination of organic contamination involved in spaceflight hardware and ground support materials. This novel analytical technique has significant advantages over current methodologies. Materials analyzed in this study were historically considered as probable contaminants in …
Solution Processible Aromatic Polyimides Via Diels Alder Precursor, Saral Shah
Solution Processible Aromatic Polyimides Via Diels Alder Precursor, Saral Shah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aromatic polyimides are interesting materials since they possess outstanding key properties such as thermoxidative stability, high mechanical strength, high modulus, excellent electrical properties, and superior chemical resistance. However, their low solubility makes them difficult to characterize, process and obtain high molecular weight polymer. In this report, we synthesized a series of precursor polymers that contains Diels-Alder (DA) adducts of anthracene. Different dienophiles were tried. These precursor polymers are soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform and can be easily processed to thin films. Heating the film above 215 degree induce retro-DA reaction, which generated the fully aromatic polyimides in …
A Three Part Research Report: The Synthesis Of Potential Insecticides, N-(4-Heteroaryloxybenzoyl)-N'-(2,4-Dichlorobenzoyl) Hydrazines: A Reinvestigation Of Hexamethylphosphoramide With Ketoximes; Regioselective Fluoralkoxylation And Polyfluoroalkoxylation Of Activated Dihalobenzenes And Dihaloheterocycles, Gary A. Decrescenzo
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report discusses research in three areas of organic synthesis: The synthesis of potential insecticides; the reinvestigation of the reaction of hexamethylphosphoramide with ketoximes; and the regioselective fluoroalkoxylation and polyfluoroalkoxylation of activated dihalobenzenes and dihaloheterocycles. In Part I, a series of N-(4-heteroaryloxybenzoyl)-N'-(2, 3-dichlorobenzoyl) hydrazines are synthesized, and attempts at cyclic dehydration to the corresponding 2, 5-disubstituted-1, 3, 4-oxadiazoles are discussed. In Part II, the synthesis of N, N-dimethyl-N'-aryl amidines by the reaction of aryl alkyl and diaryl ketoximes with HMPA is discussed. In Part III, a series of activated dihalobenzenes and dihaloheterocycles are reacted with sodium trifluoroethoxide to study the …
Isomerization And Dehydrocyclization Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Thomas E. Marcinkowski
Isomerization And Dehydrocyclization Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Thomas E. Marcinkowski
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Piperylene concentrate is a complex mixture of 5-carbon unsaturated hydrocarbons obtained as a by-product when naphtha or gas oils are cracked. The major component in this mixture is 1,3-pentadiene. During the course of this study, a number of trials, utilizing liquid phase reaction conditions, were made to investigate the geometric isomerization of 1,3-pentadiene and its separation from the piperylene concentrate. Isomerization was accomplished employing catalytic amounts of iodine at temperatures ranging from 0°C to reflux. Using this method, the maximum amount of trans-1,3-pentadiene obtained was 70% as compared to 51% in the piperylene concentrate. Recovery of the product was 90%, …
