Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis concerns the biology of Diabrotica cristata a small relatively inconspicuous beetle inhabiting relict prairie and grass lands in the Great Plains Region of North America. Diabrotica cristata has been classified taxonomically in the virgifera group and is, therefore, closely related to several very important pest species including Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera Krysan and Smith, the Mexican corn rootworm (MCR) and Diabrotica barberi Smith and Lawrence, the northern corn rootworm (NCR). The genus Diabrotica (Chrysomelidae) is composed of three groups: fucata, virgifera and signifera. The virgifera group not only includes the above …

Reduced Tillage Effects On Weed Control, Soil Properties, And Dominant Weed Species In Southeastern South Dakota, Mark A. Wrucke Apr 1984

Reduced Tillage Effects On Weed Control, Soil Properties, And Dominant Weed Species In Southeastern South Dakota, Mark A. Wrucke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, farmers have made dramatic changes in their tillage practices. The conventional plow-disk-drag system allows farmers to control weeds, remove crop residue, and prepare the soil for planting. The development of 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) acetic acid] in the 1940’s and of additional herbicides since then has greatly reduced the need for tillage to control weeds. Improvements in planting equipment allow farmers to use crop residue to their benefit. Farmers using tillage systems which leave residue on the soil surface can realize savings of time, labor, and equipment together with increased moisture and soil conservation while. maintaining yields equal to …

The Theory And Practice Of Misspelling : A Linguistic Analysis, Judy Frasch Worman Apr 1984

The Theory And Practice Of Misspelling : A Linguistic Analysis, Judy Frasch Worman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The freshmen at South Dakota State University are primarily students who have lived their entire lives in small agricultural communities. They are neither stupid nor unintelligent but merely inexperienced in writing formal exposition. Many of them come from towns with populations under one-thousand and high school graduating classes of twenty-five to fifty. Their primary means of communication (up until they enrolled in college) was through speech. Because they rarely write, they feel very uncomfortable about learning to write effectively. For the most part, these inexperienced writers are bright but unable to express themselves orthographically. There were some who, in spite …

Flameless Atomic Absorption Study Of Cobalt And Nickel In Black And White Display Screen Glass, Hui-Chieh Wang Apr 1984

Flameless Atomic Absorption Study Of Cobalt And Nickel In Black And White Display Screen Glass, Hui-Chieh Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A small quantity of nickel oxide and cobalt oxide is often added to the screen glass for both black and white and color television screens. These oxides give the glass a primarily neutral grey color. The purpose is to mitigate the influence of light sources outside the television set. Reflection of light from these sources against the luminescent layer can result in a noticeable reduction of the picture contrast. The effect of these colored oxides is based on the fact that the light reflected by the lumines cent layer passes through the screen glass twice and the light emitted by …

Stereochemistry Of Reactive Intermediates In Organophosphorous Chemistry, Alagappan Thenappan Mar 1984

Stereochemistry Of Reactive Intermediates In Organophosphorous Chemistry, Alagappan Thenappan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new synthetic route to produce a phosphonyl radical in the ground state has been devised. The radical is capable of maintaining its structural integrity and geometry. In polar aprotic solvents the radical can equilibrate depending upon reaction conditions. Our results are significant for they show that the homolytic cleavage of a phosphorous oxygen bond could by changing the configuration at phosphorous, influence the biological properties of naturally occurring compounds. The stereochemistry of 2-substituted-5-ch1oromethyl-5methy1-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinans can be established by proton NMR spectroscopy. Methanolysis of 2-hydrazinophosphorinans has been investigated. Cis and trans 2-hydrazinophosphorinans undergo acid catalyzed methanolysis to give products of both …

Robert Bly And The Twofold Consciousness, Mary A. Thelen Mar 1984

Robert Bly And The Twofold Consciousness, Mary A. Thelen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"How beautiful to walk out at midnight in the moonlight/ dreaming of animals." It is samplings of Robert Bly's poetry such as these which have prompted Eliot Weinberger to wonder, "What kind of windbag and language slob would write such a line?" But there are also such fine and startling images as "The bare trees more dignified than ever" or "lamplight that falls on all fours in the grass," which Ian Hamilton admires. Hayden Carruth has encapsulated the view of many of Bly's readers, who regard him as one of the most annoying and exciting poets of the 1960's and …

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler Mar 1984

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most cereal-based diets for swine. Thus, in cereal-based diets the lysine- requirement must be met first if the pig's protein anabolism is to be efficient and maximal. The most widely used diet in the swine industry today is the corn-soybean meal diet. Corn is deficient in lysine, but soybean meal is a relatively good source of lysine, so soybean. meal is added to the corn base to increase the diet's lysine content. Synthetic lysine also can be added to corn-soybean meal diets to increase lysine content or added as a replacement for …

Analyses Of Farmland Sales Transactions In South Dakota, Cindy R. Swinson Mar 1984

Analyses Of Farmland Sales Transactions In South Dakota, Cindy R. Swinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The changes in farmland prices are associated with many factors both inside and outside of the agricultural economy. Changing financing methods and terms, the characteristics of farmland buyers and sellers, land productivity and location are a few factors that can affect farmland prices. Information on these factors is not readily available and needs to be compiled in order to better understand the changes in farmland prices in South Dakota. Knowledge of farmland price changes and the factors associated with them is necessary for farmland investment decisions made by buyers and sellers of farmland in South Dakota. This knowledge is also …

Possible Relationships Between Surface Water Chemistry And Aquatic Plants In The Northern Great Plains, Kristin K. Sletten Mar 1984

Possible Relationships Between Surface Water Chemistry And Aquatic Plants In The Northern Great Plains, Kristin K. Sletten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The possibility of establishing relationships between surface water chemistry and the occurrence of certain aquatic plant species was investigated on 281 wetland sites throughout the northern Great Plains. Ninety-seven species of aquatic plants were selected for the study, selection being based on the direct association of plants with water and on the number of sites at which the plants were found. The ranges and means of surface water conductivity, total alkalinity and pH values were determined on a species by species basis. Of the three chemical parameters measured, conductivity of surface water appeared to have the greatest influence on the …

The Effects Of Steel Fibers On The Plastic Rotation Capacity And Properties Of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams, Khani Sahebjam Mar 1984

The Effects Of Steel Fibers On The Plastic Rotation Capacity And Properties Of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams, Khani Sahebjam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the development of structural engineering, many ideas and concepts were considered and tested. A great deal of research has been done on reinforced concrete, which plays a significant role in current structural construction. Over the past decades there has been a competition between concrete and steel structures. Both concrete and steel structures have some advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, depending on the type of structure, choosing the right alternative is important. Reinforced concrete structures, unlike steel structures, tend to fail in a relatively brittle manner because the deformation capacity of reinforced concrete is limited. When dynamic loadings are involved, concrete …

Correlation Of Soil Moisture With Soil Surface Temperature Obtained By Thermography, Daniel Paul Roesler Mar 1984

Correlation Of Soil Moisture With Soil Surface Temperature Obtained By Thermography, Daniel Paul Roesler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the atmosphere attenuates the radiation emitted by the earth, the actual surface temperature is difficult to measure accurately from satellite heights. However, the temperature difference between two locations on the earth can be measured to a better approximation if the atmosphere attenuates the radiation equally over both surfaces. Thus, the temperature difference between two locations is more accessible than the actual surface temperature of each surface. If surface temperature difference does correlate to soil moisture difference, then relative moisture content can be calculated. Consequently, if a reference moisture is available for one location, the moisture content of the soil …

The Agricultural Trade And Economic Development Between The European Community And Maghreb Countries, M. Nidal Shaar Jan 1984

The Agricultural Trade And Economic Development Between The European Community And Maghreb Countries, M. Nidal Shaar

Economics Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

A critical motivation of the post-war drive for European unification was the desire to change the bases for Europe's relations with the rest of the world in an era of dominance by extraneous continental super-powers and of the decolonization of its own nineteenth-century empires. The strategy adopted after the col lapse of the European Defense Community (EDC) of concentrating on economic integration, and assuming that its inevitable success would facilitate political unification, left the European communities with few instruments for the pursuit of external policy. Even within the economic sphere joint methods of pol icy formation have only fully superceded …

Selenium And Arsenic Interaction In The Rat, Cecile Younan Andraos Jan 1984

Selenium And Arsenic Interaction In The Rat, Cecile Younan Andraos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium was discovered by Berzelius and Gahn in 1817 while they were examining the sediment from a sulfuric acid plant at Gripsholm, Sweden. However, it was not until 1929 that the greatest interest in selenium and its compounds was aroused in relation to its toxic effects in the animal body. At that time, Franke at the South Dakota Experiment Station and other workers discovered that selenium was the toxic agent causing "Alkali disease", a chronic poisoning that affects livestock raised in certain areas of the Great Plains of the United States. It was found that certain plants could take up …

Chemistry Of Phosphate Esters : Stereochemical Evidence For A Dissociative Mechanism, Mohammed Hashmat Ali Jan 1984

Chemistry Of Phosphate Esters : Stereochemical Evidence For A Dissociative Mechanism, Mohammed Hashmat Ali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many attempts have been made to elucidate the various mechanism by which phosphates act in biological and other systems. There are many suggestions regarding mechanisms all of which fit into one of two broad categories. 1. Associative. 2. Dissociative. Of these two, interest to the associative type displacement has been of most investigators and this pathway has been established with certainty. On the other hand, less work has been done and there has been much controversy surrounding the dissociative mechanism. The dissociative mechanism is believed to be important because it has been thought that it represents the actual biological processes …

Love In Major Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Lynn Margaret Butterbrodt Jan 1984

Love In Major Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Lynn Margaret Butterbrodt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mrs. McCullers was not a prolific writer; this was largely due to the fact that she was hindered throughout much of her life by serious illnesses. When she was fifteen, doctors misdiagnosed rheumatic fever as "pneumonia with complications.” Her heart was severely damaged by this illness; consequently, she suffered strokes which resulted in blindness in one eye, complete paralysis of her left side, and complications therefrom. Her final stroke in 1967 left her comatose for forty-seven days until her death on September 29, 1967, at age fifty. Her doctors believed that had her early illness been correctly diagnosed, her lifestyle …

The Short Stories Of Djuna Barnes : A Less Disquieting Vision, Patricia Doughty Jan 1984

The Short Stories Of Djuna Barnes : A Less Disquieting Vision, Patricia Doughty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reading the works of the relatively unknown American author, Ojuna Barnes, often proves to be an intense experience, an experience which is not easily forgotten. Although one may not readily comprehend the thematic content of Barnes' work, one is immediately drawn to the beauty and the power of her language. Barnes' language is harmonious with her ideas. In her writing she deals with the often confusing complexities of the human condition, and to express those complexities, she uses language that is as highly charged and as complex as the condition described. She writes poetic fiction, prose that is inundated with …

Pesticide-Pesticide Interaction In Organophosphorus Insecticide Degradation, Peter E. Cheng Jan 1984

Pesticide-Pesticide Interaction In Organophosphorus Insecticide Degradation, Peter E. Cheng

The widespread use of pesticides during the last two decades has played an important role in the development of today's agricultural system and is one of the major topics of modern science. It is also expected to assist in meeting the nutritional needs of the rapidly expanding populations in the world. The organophosphorus insecticides are among the most toxic pesticides employed for agricultural pest control. However, organophosphorus insecticides are usually rapidly degraded and eliminated. There has been a great amount of study on the chemical, microbial, and physical factors affecting degradation of organophosphorus insecticides, but degradation pathways and behavior have …

Grazing Potential Of Major Soils Within The Black Hills Of South Dakota, Daryle L. Bennett Jan 1984

Grazing Potential Of Major Soils Within The Black Hills Of South Dakota, Daryle L. Bennett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Silvicultural management applied by the United States Forest Service (USFS) utilizes a system of intermediate thinning cuts rather than clearcutting. This practice results in a rich understory of vegetation supporting significant wildlife populations. In 1980, 62,000 deer were estimated to be present within the Black Hills. The understory, in conjunction with the adjacent open parks and stream meadows, also supports another valuable resource the livestock industry. Over 29,000 cattle grazed nearly 486,000 hectares of Black Hills National Forest grazing allotments in 1980, totaling approximately 128,000 AUMs (animal unit months) seasonally. However, only 194,000 hectares of forest are classified as suitable …

The Effects Of Limited Energy Supplementation On Pasture And Level Of Dietary Energy In The Feedlot On The Finishing Performance And Carcass Traits Of Beef Cattle, Mark J. Goetz Jan 1984

The Effects Of Limited Energy Supplementation On Pasture And Level Of Dietary Energy In The Feedlot On The Finishing Performance And Carcass Traits Of Beef Cattle, Mark J. Goetz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, pasture and range have been the major source of nutrients for grazing animals. The manner by which ruminants survive and thrive on range with no additional nutrients other than those supplied by forage is unique in the animal kingdom. Nevertheless, western man has cultivated a taste for grain-finished beef. To meet that demand, modern beef production involves both the grazing of forages and the feeding of rations high in concentrates. Major disruptive changes, either physical (as in prolonged drought) or economical (fluctuation in market prices) encourage the reexamination of traditional systems. Within the last 10 years, extreme fluctuations in …

Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson Jan 1984

Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate goal of the beef industry is efficient production of beef that satisfies the consumer and increases demand. In the past, American producers have been primarily interested in the production of high quality beef because consumers were concerned with meat palatability, particularly tenderness. However, due to current diet-health issues and economic conditions, American consumers have come to expect acceptable palatability and are now more concerned with the nutrient density and cost of their meat purchases. Maximum production efficiency must be realized to keep beef competitive with other protein sources for consumer dollars. Production systems must be used that are …

Egypt's Image In The American Media : A Content Analysis Of The New York Times' Coverage Of Egypt, Mahmoud Abd Elraouf Kamel Jan 1984

Egypt's Image In The American Media : A Content Analysis Of The New York Times' Coverage Of Egypt, Mahmoud Abd Elraouf Kamel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It seems to the unfamiliar with the Arab world that all Arab countries are the same. The Arab countries speak the same language, Arabic; have the same dominant religion, Islam; share the same geographical boundaries; have the same cultural and historical backgrounds; and share the same future as developing countries. The American media, and probably European media, are used, in many cases, to stereotype the Arab countries as one whole. Nevertheless, the Arab countries vary one from another in many characteristics such as natural resources, kind of rule, literacy rate and population density and growth. Egypt is one of these …

Ability Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae To Fix Nitrogen Utilizing Selected Energy Sources, Theresa Helen Lemme Jan 1984

Ability Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae To Fix Nitrogen Utilizing Selected Energy Sources, Theresa Helen Lemme

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many nutrients in a farming operation which can limit production. Nitrogen deficiencies are found more often than any other. Crop yield increases needed to meet world population growth result in a greater demand for nitrogen. The commercial chemical manufacturer of fertilizer nitrogen by the Haber-Basch method is very energy intensive. Biological nitrogen fixation as an alternative source of nitrogen is now being extensively studied. The legume-rhizobium symbiosis has been well documented. This symbiosis has occurred for centuries yet the knowledge of its process and how it helps to decrease fertilizer nitrogen requirements was welcomed by the agricultural community. …

Patient Demand For Nursing Home Care, Kenneth Ray Spear Jan 1984

Patient Demand For Nursing Home Care, Kenneth Ray Spear

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A great deal of attention has been devoted in recent years to the rising costs of health care and to the resulting pressures upon private and public budgets. Likewise, much attention has been focused on the economic well-being of the increasing number of older citizens. Surprisingly, the tools of economics have been infrequently applied to the nursing home industry, which is a growing segment of the health care sector that now provides services to over one million elderly persons annually (U.S., Department of Health and Human Services, 1981). Since economics is concerned with scarce resources and their efficient allocation among …

Effects Of Dietary Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea) On Body Weight, Food Consumption, And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6phd) Activity In Lethal Yellow (Ay/Aw) And White-Bellied Agouti (Aw/Aw) Mice (Strain 129/Sv), Lisa Deette Staber Jan 1984

Effects Of Dietary Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea) On Body Weight, Food Consumption, And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6phd) Activity In Lethal Yellow (Ay/Aw) And White-Bellied Agouti (Aw/Aw) Mice (Strain 129/Sv), Lisa Deette Staber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a non-competitive inhibitor in vitro of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the rate controlling enzyme in the pentose-phosphate shunt. This pathway produces NADPH, a necessary co-factor for the synthesis of fatty acids and ribo- and deoxyribonucleotides. Some researchers believe that by decreasing G6PDH activity, DHEA produces an anti-obesity and anticarcinogenic effect in laboratory mice and rats genetically inclined toward obesity and cancer. It is DHEA's anti-obesity effect which lends it to the study of the yellow obese (AY/-) mouse with its peculiar pleiotropic syndrome. Yellow obese AY/AW mice were found to be more susceptible to dietary DHEA's effects than …
