The Relationship Between Home Economics Teachers' Conceptual Systems Levels And Classroom Discipline Ideologies, Kathleen R. Winberg Mar 1982

The Relationship Between Home Economics Teachers' Conceptual Systems Levels And Classroom Discipline Ideologies, Kathleen R. Winberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Support for the hypothesis that conceptual systems may be used to predict various teaching behaviors has been established by several researchers (Harvey, 1970; Harvey, et al ., 1966; Murphy and Brown, 1970; Pryor, 1975). Harvey, et al. (1966) recorded and assessed actual classroom teaching behavior of thirty Head Start teachers varying in conceptual level to determine the effects of the teachers' conceptual level on the classroom climate created for their pupils. High, medium, and low conceptual level teachers were rated on twenty-six behavioral dimensions including expression of warmth towards children, enjoyment of teaching, perceptiveness of children’s needs, smoothness of class …

Photoinduction Of Floral Development In Hard Red Winter Wheat, Jose Ernesto Robles Wijangco Mar 1982

Photoinduction Of Floral Development In Hard Red Winter Wheat, Jose Ernesto Robles Wijangco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is at the northern limit of winter wheat cultivation in the United States. However, it has been estimated that only 15% of the total winter wheat acreage has been planted to hardy winter wheat cultivars in this state. Records at this station indicate that grain yields of winter hardy cultivars can be 20 to 40% lower than less hardy cultivars in the absence of severe freeze stress. Low grain yields of hardy types is one reason for low preference of these phenotypes by growers. Hardy cultivars usually head late compared to less hardy ones. With late initiation of …

Carbon Metabolism Of Azospirillum Brasilense, Galina V. Vigil Mar 1982

Carbon Metabolism Of Azospirillum Brasilense, Galina V. Vigil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To understand the nature of bacteria-plant associations both plant and bacterial metabolism studies are important. Research into the biochemistry of photosynthesis has revealed that besides the reductive pentose phosphate cycle, many grasses also possess the C-4 dicarboxylic acid cycle. Grasses possessing this pathway utilize their available nitrogen more efficiently in producing dry matter and fixing atmospheric C02. The general importance of the C-4 dicarboxylic acid pathway in tropical grasses had previously been widely accepted. Azospirillum spp. are thought to be mainly responsible for the nitrogen fixation that occurs in grasses. The preference of these bacteria for malate and other organic …

Bionomics Of The Northern Corn Rootworm On First Year Corn In Eastern South Dakota, Paul M. Vassalotti Mar 1982

Bionomics Of The Northern Corn Rootworm On First Year Corn In Eastern South Dakota, Paul M. Vassalotti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica longicornis barberi, is a major pest of corn in South Dakota. It has one generation per year and overwinters in the soil as an egg. The eggs hatch in June and the larvae begin feeding on developing corn roots. The loss of roots reduces the uptake of water and nutrients, which can reduce yields especially under dry conditions. Root pruning by the larvae also weakens the brace root system, which may cause the plant to lodge, making harvesting difficult. Corn is the preferred host plant, although larvae have been reported surviving on several other species …

Genetics Of Resistance To Hessian Fly Derived From Dawn Winter Wheat In Spring Wheat Crosses, Debra Kay Steiger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), has been a serious insect pest of cornnon wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell.) since it was first identified in the United States over 200 years ago. Losses are difficult to estimate due to geographical variability in populations but are large enough to characterize this pest as one of economic importance. Dahms in 1967 estimated the direct average annual loss in the United States at 15 million bushels. The last serious outbreak in the United States was reported in 1978 in the spring wheat producing regions of north central and northeastern South Dakota where conservative …

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen Feb 1982

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seasonality of reproduction in sheep has created an oscillating supply of lambs. A more constant supply of lambs would allow more efficient use of facilities and labor by producers, feedlots and packing plants. Seasonal reproduction also limits the lifetime production of the ewe. Extension of the breeding season would provide a more consistent supply of lambs. In addition, more than one lamb crop per ewe could be produced annually. Not only the yearly lamb production but also the lifetime production of the ewe would then be increased. Also, the generation interval would be shortened allowing faster herd improvement. It is …

Relationship Between Soil Moisture And Soil Surface Temperature, Steven Darwin Ness Feb 1982

Relationship Between Soil Moisture And Soil Surface Temperature, Steven Darwin Ness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermal-infrared imagery (thermography) obtained from satellite altitudes has been shown to be a promising new tool for resource management and development. Satellite-borne thermal-infrared sensors allow the collection of time-sequential thermal-infrared radiation (thermal emittance) data over large land surface areas of the earth at relatively low cost. Thus, any resource which can be related to thermal emittance can be readily monitored. Thermal emittance from a surface is proportional to the fourth power of the surface temperature. Thus any factor which affects the surface temperature greatly affects the surface thermal emittance. · Moisture is such a factor when the land surface is …

Nitrogen Fertility Requirements, Dry Matter Production And Nutrient Uptake Of The Sunflower, Robert Andrew Narem Feb 1982

Nitrogen Fertility Requirements, Dry Matter Production And Nutrient Uptake Of The Sunflower, Robert Andrew Narem

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Grain Protein Content And Yield Of Spring Wheat In South Dakota, Syed Dara Tazul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been predicted that the cost of nitrogen fertilizer will soon triple. Consequently, N management by wheat growers in South Dakota will be even more critical than it has been in the past. Nitrogen is one of the most limiting nutrients for wheat production in South Dakota. Many of the spring wheat producers fail to take advantage of nitrogen fertilizer recommendations based on soil testing. Therefore, it is likely that a simple post-harvest method of determining if adequate N was present for wheat crop would be very beneficial to spring wheat producers. One such method is using grain protein …

Adjusting Potential To Actual Evapotranspiration Rates Applicable Over Large Spatial Regions, Leah Jane Horton Feb 1982

Adjusting Potential To Actual Evapotranspiration Rates Applicable Over Large Spatial Regions, Leah Jane Horton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because of their repetitive flight patterns and broad spatial coverage, satellites hold great promise for supplying the data necessary to predict soil moisture conditions. Already satellite data have been used to predict such input parameters to soil moisture models as solar radiation values and leaf area indices. In addition, surface soil moisture or rainfall events could be detected remotely and used as model inputs. Conceivably, satellite imagery could be used to. predict most, if not all, of the inputs into a soil moisture model. Although the use of satellite data sounds like a timely panacea, there are some inherent questions …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the Arab oil embargo of 1973, we have become increasingly aware of the finite nature of our petroleum supplies. Current studies estimate that our supplies of petroleum will be depleted in the next 25 to 50 years. As supplies diminish and prices rise, we will need alternate forms of energy to take up the slack. One of the leading alternatives is the use of biomass in the production of liquid fuel that is, conversion of cellulose, starch, glucose, or other carbohydrates to ethanol. In the United States, the fuel ethanol industry is still in its infancy. Approximately a dozen …

The Forgotten Realist, John Garvey Jan 1982
