A Pilot Plant Study To Determine The Treatability Of Combined Domestic And Milk Wastes In An Aerated Lagoon, Allen M. Vanden Hoek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The milk processing industry commonly produces large quantities of high-strength waste. Frequently, a milk processing plant is located in a small agricultural community in which it is the only sizable industry. Because of this, the wastewater from the milk plant may cause overloading of the wastewater treatment facilities of the community. This situation exists in Volga, a small town in eastern South Dakota. The city of Volga, with an estimated 1967 population of 840, has been treating the domestic wastewater plus the industrial waste from the relatively large milk processing plant by utilizing a stabilization pond system. This type of …

The Retention Of Fallout Particles On Roofs Having Different Slopes, Arden B. Sigl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since World War II the continual buildup and spread of nuclear arms has produced a pressure situation between nations. As more and more nations become nuclear powers and continue to expand their arsenals, the chance of a nuclear attack, either by accident or by specific intent, increases. If a full-scale nuclear attack should develop, the only chance of survival would rest -with a fully prepared population. Even with a fully prepared population many would not survive. The National Fallout Shelter Program is helpful in preventing casualties in the event of a nuclear attack. Studies show, however, that such casualties would …

Reactions Of Oxotrichlorobis(Triphenylphosphine)Rhenium(V), Melvin Leitheiser Feb 1969

Reactions Of Oxotrichlorobis(Triphenylphosphine)Rhenium(V), Melvin Leitheiser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While sealed tube reactions have been used extensively in the synthesis of other transition metal complexes (1), the method has seen limited use in synthetic rhenium chemistry. The first reaction reported was the preparation of tris (l,1O phenanthroline) rhenium(III) chloride (2). The second reaction was an attempt to isomerize oxotrichlorobis (triphenylphosphine) rhenium(V), ReOCI3-[C65H5) 3P] 2; by refluxing it in chloroform (3). Instead of isomerization, oxodichloro(ethoxy) bis (triphenylphosphine) rhenium(V), ReO(OC2H5 )c12 [C65H5) 3P] was produced; the ethoxy moiety came from an ethanol preservative in commercial chloroform. As temperature was sometimes important, the isomerization was also attempted in chloroform.in a sealed tube …

The Influence Of Anaerobic Pretreatment On The Treatability Of A Milk Waste, Jerry Lee Siegel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Both anaerobic and aerobic treatment of wastewater has been used for many years. Some of the common aerobic treatment systems include oxidation or stabilization ponds, activated sludge, trickling filters, and aerated lagoons. Anaerobic treatment has been most commonly used for digestion of sewage sludge. However, septic tanks, anaerobic lagoons, and anaerobic activated sludge (contact stabilization) units are used to treat wastewater anaerobically. More recently, the two systems have been used in combination, with the anaerobic system preceding the aerobic one. This type of treatment has been used primarily for lagooning of industrial wastes, and most commonly for meat-packing wastes. In …

The Preparation And Pyrolysis Of 2-Methyl-4-Alkyl(Aryl)Semicarbazides, Bob Edwin Sherwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the research described in this thesis was twofold. Attempts were made to prepare several 4-alkyl (aryl)-2-methylsemicarbazides, many of which had not been prepared previously. The successful synthesis involved the addition of alkyl and aryl isocyanates to methyl hydrazine under controlled conditions. Secondly, the products from the pyrolysis of the semicarbazides were characterized and found to be 4-alkyl (aryl)-1-methylurazoles. The mechanism of the thermal reaction was elucidated. It was hoped, based on structural similarities to known active agents, that biologically active materials would be obtained. Products are currently undergoing evaluation for biological activity. Anomalous behavior was observed upon …
