Aluminum Nitride Films By Reactive Sputtering, Alvin Randolph Dec 1996

Aluminum Nitride Films By Reactive Sputtering, Alvin Randolph

Theses

Aluminum nitride thin films (-1000 A) have been deposited on silicon substrate by re active sputtering using Al target in 1 : 1 Ar:N2 environment. The atomic force microscopy examination revealed continuous microcrystalline film structure. The Auger electron spectroscopic analysis shows the presence of oxygen in the films. The annealing at 850 C in nitrogen is found to cause recrystallinization and, by FTIR analysis, further oxidation of the films. The films can be characterized as lossy dielectrics with relative permittivity ~ 10, higher than the bulk value of 8.9. Annealing the films is found to reduce anion vacancies and improve …

A Study Utilizing Halftone Based Digital Proofing Systems In The Flexographic Printing Process, William Hanna Dec 1996

A Study Utilizing Halftone Based Digital Proofing Systems In The Flexographic Printing Process, William Hanna

Theses

Contract proofing for printing has been traditionally done by press proofing. This is costly and wasteful, not just in terms of equipment and labor but also in terms of expendables. The advent of off-press proofing was greeted with some degree of uncertainty by the printing industry. With press proofing, the proof was literally a preview of what would happen on a press. The press proof, although often printed on a different press, generally used the same type of inks, plates and substrate that would characterize the final print. With offpress proofing, printers were comparing apples to oranges; instead of comparing …

An Investigation Of Air Side Heat Transfer Enhancement In Multi-Louver Fins Within Automotive Compact Heat Exchangers, Patrick Fix Dec 1996

An Investigation Of Air Side Heat Transfer Enhancement In Multi-Louver Fins Within Automotive Compact Heat Exchangers, Patrick Fix

Theses

The multi-louver fin is the primary geometric configuration used to enhance the air-side heat transfer characteristics of automotive heat exchangers today. This work presents an investigation into the effects of multi-louver fins on the air-side Stanton number (St) and Fanning friction factor (f) characteristics of a heat exchanger. Experimental St data ranging between 0.0095 and 0.065 and/ data ranging between 0.04 and 0.55 are reported for louver pitch based Reynolds numbers ranging between 30 and 4000. Brazed core test samples with multi-louver fins are utilized to complete this study. Previous investigators have correlated the air-side St and/ to geometric parameters …

Simplicity, Angela Stickell Nov 1996

Simplicity, Angela Stickell

Theses

My thesis work is intended to be part of an ongoing polemic concerning the value of modernism. Modernism occurred at a time in history when craft, industrial design and architectural design were enjoying reciprocal influences. Many architects were translating their architectural value systems into object designs, many of which became landmarks of twentieth century design. This crossover between the fields, which is evidenced still today, produced a rich theoretic tradition from which to draw. I am convinced that architectural design and object design are invariably linked and this is reflected in my thesis works as well as in my thesis …

Two-Dimensional Spectrum Estimation Using The Radon Transform, Jennifer Wideman Nov 1996

Two-Dimensional Spectrum Estimation Using The Radon Transform, Jennifer Wideman

Theses

An alternative approach to two-dimensional power spectrum estimation incorporating the Radon transform in conjunction with each of the one-dimensional periodogram, Blackman-Tukey, and Autoregressive parameter estimation algorithms is examined. The Radon transform is used to express a two-dimensional data set in terms of its projections onto a set of one-dimensional radial lines, effectively reducing the two-dimensional estimation problem to a series of one-dimensional problems. The resulting two-dimensional power spectrum estimates are compared to the known power spectra for a variety of data types. The Radon transform approach combined with autoregressive parameter estimation can provide a high-resolution power spectrum estimate, effectively surpassing …

The Introduction And Development Of Printing In Finland, 1631-1727, Esa-Mikael Kokka

Theses

The objective of this thesis project was to prepare a detailed yet reasonably compact history of the three early printing houses in Finland within a context of general Finnish and Scandinavian history. An extensive study of the literature was needed to accomplish the set goals. The literature included books on both early printing in Finland and on its general history. The necessary field studies consisted of visits to museums, university libraries, archives and churches. These offered the opportunity to study old manuscripts and the early printed products. Some experts were also interviewed. As a result of this research, a compact …

A Nonprofit's Guide To Internally-Planned Successful Print Communications, Joseph Wilson Nov 1996

A Nonprofit's Guide To Internally-Planned Successful Print Communications, Joseph Wilson

Theses

Nonprofit institutions, sans a large budget allocated towards design, publications production and printing, suffer from a lack of effective print communications. Even within the classification of "nonprofit," a distinction can be made between successful groups and struggling ones. To further compound the matter, nonprofit groups, beyond just a deficit of funds, lack a graphic artist's understanding of how to assemble, produce and intelligently purchase print communications. It is no wonder then, that the struggling nonprofit group finds itself caught in a frustrating cycle. They need, desperately, to get their word out in order to raise funds; yet they lack the …

On-Screen Electronic Forms Design: Graphical Elements Vs. Straight Data Entry Formats, Karen Preston Nov 1996

On-Screen Electronic Forms Design: Graphical Elements Vs. Straight Data Entry Formats, Karen Preston

Theses

Electronic forms is an emerging market that is being incorporated into daily use in many corporations and small businesses. In the transition from paper forms to electronic forms many users are merely recreating the paper forms digitally to create an exact replica on screen. This is being done through the utilization of page layout programs such as QuarkXpress and PageMaker as well as through the aid of electronic forms software programs available today. These software programs aid the user with forms design, often providing templates of forms that are in a graphical format containing rules, logos, and other graphically embellishing …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Poly(Ester-Imide)S, Jinseo Ahn Nov 1996

Synthesis And Characterization Of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Poly(Ester-Imide)S, Jinseo Ahn

Theses

A series of novel poly(ester-imide)s were prepared by the reactions of 6,6'-(3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic diimido)-bis-hexanoic acid with various aliphatic diols containing four to ten methylene groups using a melt polymerization technique. Besides these, a novel poly(esterimide) was synthesized by the reaction of 1 1 , 1 1 '-(3,3', 4,4'- benzophenonetetracarboxylic diimido)-bis-undecanoic acid with 1 ,6-hexanediol employing the same technique. Two kinds of monomers containing diimide diacids were prepared by the reactions of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride with respective 6-aminocaproic acid and 1 1 -aminoundecanoic acid. A total of eight poly(ester-imide)s, PEIMs, were characterized for liquid crystalline properties. The solubility, viscosity, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses …

Hydroboration Of Alkenes Catalyzed By Rhodium Compounds, Lu Yang Nov 1996

Hydroboration Of Alkenes Catalyzed By Rhodium Compounds, Lu Yang

Theses

Hydroboration of 1-octene in the presence of RhCl3-Aliquat 336 catalyst for different reaction times ( 24, 10, 5 and 2 hours ), results in 2-octanol as the major product , which means that Markovnikov addition is the major process . Different solvents and temperatures caused some changes of product ratio of 2-octanol to 1- octanol. The same catalyst system has been found to hydroborate styrene in an anti- Markovnikov fashion.

Time-Frequency Distribution Analysis Of Heart Rate And Blood Velocity Variabilities In Stage 24/34 Chick Embryos, Andrew Bonacci Nov 1996

Time-Frequency Distribution Analysis Of Heart Rate And Blood Velocity Variabilities In Stage 24/34 Chick Embryos, Andrew Bonacci

Theses

Time-frequency distribution (TFD) analysis is a relatively new process for decomposing a complex signal to understand its spectral content Traditional signal spectral analysis examines both temporal and spectral contents distinctly. This method of analysis is suitable for signals where the spectral content is stationary and time-invariant. However, many naturally occurring signals are not only multicomponent, but are also highly time-variable, such as speech, heart rate variability, and other biological signals. Typically, the Fourier transform exposes sinusoidal frequencies present in a signal. It cannot, however, tell when these frequencies existed temporally. This is where timefrequency analysis excels over traditional spectral processing …

A Hypothesis For Determining The Maximum Viscosity Of Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose In Solutions Of Divalent Cations Of High Ionic Strength, Therese Lorenz Nov 1996

A Hypothesis For Determining The Maximum Viscosity Of Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose In Solutions Of Divalent Cations Of High Ionic Strength, Therese Lorenz

Theses

A hypothesis for deterrnining the maximum viscosity of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (or CMC) in salt solutions with respect to the concentration of CMC, the ionic strength and the cation size of the salts is proposed. The viscosity behavior of sodium carboxymethylcellulose in high ionic strength solutions was studied by varying the concentration of the CMC and the type of counterion. The object of this series of two experiments was to determine the effect of valency, cation size and ionic strength on the viscosity of CMC in high ionic strength solutions. The viscosity data in this study suggest some trends with regard …

Catalyzed Additions To Alkene Double Bonds: (I) Fumarase-Catalyzed Hydration Of Alkene Double Bonds (Ii) Alumina-Catalyzed Hydrochlorination Of Alkene Double Bonds, Charles Francavilla Nov 1996

Catalyzed Additions To Alkene Double Bonds: (I) Fumarase-Catalyzed Hydration Of Alkene Double Bonds (Ii) Alumina-Catalyzed Hydrochlorination Of Alkene Double Bonds, Charles Francavilla

Theses

The stereospecific hydration of (5)-malate to fumarate, catalyzed by fumarase, was extensively analyzed by NMR. The NMR techniques employed were one dimensional 2H and NOE Difference, and two dimensional ^^H COSY. Various potentional substrates were tried for fumarase-promoted hydration with no sucesss. It was concluded that mesaconate is possibly the largest molecule that can fit into the active site of fumarase in the correct orientation for hydration to occur. Thionyl chloride and appropriately prepared alumina was found to promote the addition of HC1 to norbornadiene ( I ), resulting in71%(+l%) exo-5-chloronorbornene ( II ) and 29% 3-chloronortricyclene ( HI ) …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Optical Dot Gain And Mechanical Dot Gain Of Am And Fm Halftones, Eva Gronberg Nov 1996

A Study Of The Relationship Between Optical Dot Gain And Mechanical Dot Gain Of Am And Fm Halftones, Eva Gronberg

Theses

FM screening differs from conventional screening by the absence of screen ruling and the use of small micro dots to represent the tonal values in an image. FM screens have a high dot gain which is comparable to the dot gain of very fine conventional screens. Some tests showed that FM screens are more stable on press compared to AM screens, that is, they experience less variation in dot gain when the solid ink density is increasing. The major questions of this study were: 1) What is the relationship between mechanical and optical dot gain for FM screens? Is the …

Image Quality Metrics And Optimum Focus Criteria For Visual Optical Systems, Xiaoxue Cheng Nov 1996

Image Quality Metrics And Optimum Focus Criteria For Visual Optical Systems, Xiaoxue Cheng

Theses

Image quality metrics for visual instruments were examined in terms of their through focus behavior in the presence of various aberrations, and their correlations with available subjective performance data. The contrast sensitivity measurements were performed using rotationally symmetric, variable contrast difference-of-gaussians (DOG) targets, viewed through specially designed telescopes that presented various amounts of monochromatic aberrations. Then the contrast sensitivity ratios were correlated with the image quality metrics of the telescopes. The results show that an appropriately defined integral of the instrument-observer MTF (called MTFa) correlates well with subjective performance in most cases and predicts the optimum focus best; the radius …

Press Performance Of Frequency Modulated Screen Printing On Newsprint, Li-Yi Ma Oct 1996

Press Performance Of Frequency Modulated Screen Printing On Newsprint, Li-Yi Ma

Theses

Frequency Modulated (FM) screening has been praised for its apparent resolution advantage over conventional halftone screening. Studies showed FM screening can be processed with the existing technology, and it does bring about a visible improvement in image quality on newsprint. This study focused on the press performance of the FM halftone printing on newsprint. The fineness of conventional halftone screens can be described by indicating the screen rulings (lines per inch or lpi), and the fineness of FM screens is measured by the size of the micro dots ([micron] or 10~6m). It is difficult to equate the microdot size in …

A Vhdl Model Of A Superscalar Implementation Of The Dlx Instruction Set Architcture, Paul Ferno Oct 1996

A Vhdl Model Of A Superscalar Implementation Of The Dlx Instruction Set Architcture, Paul Ferno

Theses

The complexity of today's microprocessors demands that designers have an extensive knowledge of superscalar design techniques; this knowledge is difficult to acquire outside of a professional design team. Presently, there are a limited number of adequate resources available for the student, both in textual and model form. The limited number of options available emphasizes the need for more models and simulators, allowing students the opportunity to learn more about superscalar designs prior to entering the work force. This thesis details the design and implementation of a superscalar version of the DLX instruction set architecture in behavioral VHDL. The branch prediction …

A Buffering Strategy For Stabilizing Network Data Rates, Brian Bell Oct 1996

A Buffering Strategy For Stabilizing Network Data Rates, Brian Bell

Theses

In the past ten years, there has been substantial growth in the area of networked applications. The expansion of such Internet applications as USENET and the world wide web has lead to greater demand for faster and higher quality data transmissions. However, the Internet tends to have a bursty traffic pattern. Such a pattern interferes with an application's ability to receive a data stream at a constant rate. A constant rate is necessary for real-time, networked multimedia applications to be able to provide a high quality of service to the user. This thesis proposes a buffering strategy that stabilizes a …

Lei Rimana "She Stays", Keith Watson

Theses

My concept is to re-evaluate and advance personal communication aids, generally, but not entirely, in the form of greeting cards, to a new level of interest and signification. The goal is to eliminate the passive viewer, and have the individual actively participate in the presentation. The computer-based, interactive media project is designed around three-dimensional sculptures, which serve as "narrators," and put back the one-to-one interaction that is so often missing in non-verbal greetings. In combining technology with more traditional storytelling techniques, it will develop and express a personal message that will help reinforce the intent of the message by becoming …
