Evaluating The Taxonomic Status Of The Great White Heron (Ardea Herodias Occidentalis) Using Morphological, Behavioral And Genetic Evidence., Heather Louise Mcguire Jan 2001

Evaluating The Taxonomic Status Of The Great White Heron (Ardea Herodias Occidentalis) Using Morphological, Behavioral And Genetic Evidence., Heather Louise Mcguire

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Great White Heron was originally described as a distinct species (Ardea occidentalis), but is currently considered to be the white morph of a polymorphic Great Blue Heron subspecies (A. herodias occidentalis). Great White and Great Blue heron breeding ranges overlap in the Florida Keys (USA), providing an opportunity to evaluate the degree to which these two taxa are reproductively isolated. The current classification leads to predictions of no significant size difference (H01), random mate choice (H02), and no genetic divergence (H03) between sympatric white and blue herons. Sympatric Great White and Great Blue herons did not differ significantly in …

Habitat Influences On Nongame Bird Nest Success In A Managed And Fragmented Southern Pine Forest., Michael Darren Baker Jan 2000

Habitat Influences On Nongame Bird Nest Success In A Managed And Fragmented Southern Pine Forest., Michael Darren Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We confirmed the breeding-season presence of 52 bird species and assessed the reproductive quality of a fragmented southern pine forest managed for natural resource extraction on Barksdale Air Force Base in northwest Louisiana, USA. We also conducted point counts to assess relative abundance, richness, and diversity among four habitat discontinuity types (timber harvests, pipeline corridors, access roads, and natural gas wells). Each parameter was greater on study plots adjacent to gas wells than on those adjacent to roads. We determined the fate of 817 nests of 42 species between 1996 and 1998 and determined Mayfield daily nest success (MDNS) for …

Null Codon-Based Models Of Synonymous And Nonsynonymous Substitution From A Phylogenetic Perspective., David A. Mcclellan Jan 1999

Null Codon-Based Models Of Synonymous And Nonsynonymous Substitution From A Phylogenetic Perspective., David A. Mcclellan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation focuses on the relationship between codon composition and the molecular evolution of protein-coding DNA sequences. Chapter 1 emphasizes the role of codon structure in determining patterns of nucleotide substitution, as well as the influence codon composition has on the evolution of the structure and function of the protein. The overall purpose of Chapter 1 is to establish the need to study molecular evolution at the codon level. In Chapter 2, the codon-degeneracy model (CDM) of molecular evolution is constructed. This model considers codon structure in terms of patterns of nucleotide site degeneracy. It allows the prediction of patterns …

Systematics Of The Common Garter Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis., John Jeffrey Boundy Jan 1999

Systematics Of The Common Garter Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis., John Jeffrey Boundy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Character variation was examined in the snake Thamnophis sirtalis . Initially, 187 characters were examined on five populations (OTUs). Only 12% of the characters failed to show geographic variation by ANOVA. A reduced data set of 72 characters remained after eliminating those that were invariant and correlated. The reduced data set was analyzed for interpopulation variation between 37 OTUs, of T. sirtalis. Numbers of significantly differentiated characters between OTUs, determined by ANOVA, were used to generate a UPGMA tree. The tree placed Texas and Chihuahuan populations as sister groups to all other OTUs, and grouped OTUs from west of the …

Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Topminnow, Fundulus Olivaceus And F. Euryzonus., Thomas Allen Blanchard Jan 1998

Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Topminnow, Fundulus Olivaceus And F. Euryzonus., Thomas Allen Blanchard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fundulus olivaceus and F. euryzonus are sister species that commonly occur syntopically in the Amite and Tangipahoa River drainages in Louisiana and Mississippi. Although the habitats of the two species are quite similar, and the timing of their reproductive activity overlaps extensively, no natural hybrids between them have been documented. I examined physiological, as well as behavioral, factors that could potentially serve as effective isolating mechanisms between them. The courtship and spawning behaviors of the two species were relatively generalized and showed a number of similarities. Under forced mating conditions in which females were allowed to associate with heterospecific males …

Molecular Systematics Of Selected Members Of The Black Basses, Genus Micropterus, With Concentration On The Spotted Bass (M. Punctulatus) Species Complex., Belinda Fuller Jan 1998

Molecular Systematics Of Selected Members Of The Black Basses, Genus Micropterus, With Concentration On The Spotted Bass (M. Punctulatus) Species Complex., Belinda Fuller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined genetic relationships among selected populations of black basses. These centrarchid fishes, separated by both physical barriers (land formations) and distance, have shown varying degrees of differentiation, but retain many morphometric characters in common. Eight populations representing four taxa and geographical extremes in the genus Micropterus, with concentration on the spotted bass complex, were selected and evaluated for biochemical genetic characters. This study examined two species and two subspecies of spotted basses. The type species from Kentucky represented Micropterus punctulatus punctulatus; a population from Alabama represented M. p. henshalli. A Texas population, previously classified as conspecific with spotted …

A Review Of The North American Squalodontidae (Mammalia, Cetacea)., Alton Cline Dooley Jr Jan 1998

A Review Of The North American Squalodontidae (Mammalia, Cetacea)., Alton Cline Dooley Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

All available North American specimens of squalodont whales were examined to determine species assignments, and to determine functional aspects and ecological implications. Only two existing species of the 17 referred to Squalodontidae from North America are members of that family, Squalodon atlanticus and Squalodon calvertensis. Of these two species, only S. calvertensis is based on adequate material for consideration as a valid species. Squalodon calvertensis is redescribed, based on the material which has been collected since 1923. These specimens indicate that the species is found from New Jersey to North Carolina, in the Miocene Kirkwood, Calvert, and Pungo River Formations. …

Relative Rates Of Molecular Evolution In Rodents And Their Symbionts., Theresa Ann Spradling Jan 1997

Relative Rates Of Molecular Evolution In Rodents And Their Symbionts., Theresa Ann Spradling

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this dissertation is the relative tempo of molecular evolution among organisms of varying levels of relatedness. Because this is a rapidly expanding area of research, Chapter 1 is devoted to a review of the current state of knowledge on rates of molecular evolution. In Chapter 2, I present an analysis of relative rates of evolution among several distantly related rodents. The heterogeneity in rate of evolution of the cytochrome b gene observed here cannot be explained by metabolic rate, body size, generation time, or nucleotide-generation time. Likewise, there is no evidence that these differences in rate of …

Flight Muscle Histolysis In The Female House Cricket, Acheta Domesticus., Rush Hoyet Oliver Jan 1997

Flight Muscle Histolysis In The Female House Cricket, Acheta Domesticus., Rush Hoyet Oliver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Flight muscle histolysis was investigated in the dorsal longitudinal muscles (DLMs) of the cricket. Histolysis in the DLMs was characterized by analysis of total protein content, tissue wet weight, and relative percent muscle shortening. Initial declines of total protein indicated the JH signal initiating histolysis occurred by Day 2. Histolysis was essentially complete by Day 3. Ligation of Day 1 crickets prevented histolysis but this inhibition could be prevented by continual topical treatments with methoprene. Ligation of Day 2 crickets did not prevent histolysis. A requirement for active protein expression was demonstrated by analysis of synthesis block by cycloheximide and …

Importance Of A Siderophore In The Pathogenesis And Virulence Of Photobacterium Damsela Subsp. Piscicida In Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone Saxatili X Morone Chrysops)., John Phillip Hawke Jan 1996

Importance Of A Siderophore In The Pathogenesis And Virulence Of Photobacterium Damsela Subsp. Piscicida In Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone Saxatili X Morone Chrysops)., John Phillip Hawke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida, formerly Pasteurella piscicida, is an important new pathogen of hybrid striped bass cultured in brackish water on Louisiana mariculture farms. Louisiana isolates compared with strains of P. damsela subsp. piscicida from Greece, Japan, Israel and Chesapeake Bay, USA and were found to be identical in biochemical phenotype and enzymic activity. Small plasmids of 8 and 5 kb were unique to Louisiana strains. Sequential daily bacteriology and histopathology on hybrid striped bass experimentally infected by immersion revealed that following high doses (13,000 CFU/ml) the gills and spleen are colonized first as early as 24 hours PI, followed …

Breeding Ecology Of Songbirds In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of Louisiana., Keith Ouchley Jan 1996

Breeding Ecology Of Songbirds In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of Louisiana., Keith Ouchley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I examined productivity, survivorship and nest-site habitat characteristics of small terrestrial landbirds breeding in bottomland hardwood forest study sites in Louisiana. Bottomland hardwood forests are the dominate ecosystem of riverine floodplains in the southeastern United States, and these forests support a diverse bird community. Over 80 percent of this forest type has been lost, primarily due to agricultural clearing, and the relative abundance of many bird species that breed in these forests has also declined. The outcomes of 790 nests of 33 species were determined. For most species, productivity was greater in large forest tracts than in small tracts. Predation …

Foraging Behavior And Habitat Selection Of Insectivorous Migratory Songbirds At Gulf Coast Stopover Sites In Spring., Chao-Chieh Chen Jan 1996

Foraging Behavior And Habitat Selection Of Insectivorous Migratory Songbirds At Gulf Coast Stopover Sites In Spring., Chao-Chieh Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Abundance of some species of Nearctic-Neotropical migrants has been declining dramatically since 1970. Most literature about Neotropical migrants is from the breeding grounds, and some is from the wintering grounds; very little is from stopover sites. I studied foraging behavior and habitat selection of insectivorous migratory songbirds at three stopover sites along northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico during spring migrations of 1993-1995. Each migrant species had its unique combination of foraging behavior and habitat use during stopover. Migrants selected certain habitat strata and plant species and avoided others. The decrease of understory vegetation in the reduced plots had …

Analysis Of Host-Parasite Cospeciation: Effects Of Spatial And Temporal Scale., James W. Demastes Jan 1996

Analysis Of Host-Parasite Cospeciation: Effects Of Spatial And Temporal Scale., James W. Demastes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

All species of pocket gophers (Geomyidae) are parasitized by at least one species of chewing louse (Trichodectidae), and recent genetic studies have demonstrated that a pattern of cospeciation exists between these hosts and parasites (Hafner and Nadler, 1988; Hafner et al., 1994). Little work has been done on this host-parasite system at lower taxonomic (intrageneric) levels. Although cospeciation is evident in a study of pocket gophers within the genus Geomys and their chewing lice (Geomydoecus), reticulate evolution and retention of ancestral lineages obscure the pattern (Chapter 2). One key to understanding how these patterns of cospeciation are produced and how …

Behavioral And Morphological Development Of Immature Hawaiian Freshwater Fishes., David Chestine Tate Jan 1995

Behavioral And Morphological Development Of Immature Hawaiian Freshwater Fishes., David Chestine Tate

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies of recent fish collections from 17 streams on four islands in Hawai'i provided key characteristics for species identification of immature forms of five native species of freshwater gobioids. Young Eleotris sandwicensis lack fused pelvic fins. A suborbital bar identifies Stenogobius hawaiiensis. Awaous guamensis can be distinguished by lack of notches in the upper lip, Lentipes concolor by a single median notch, and Sicyopterus stimpsoni by three notches. Recruitment from oceanic plankton occurred year round but peaked from February to April. Lentipes invaded streams mainly during the day with the wave surge; Sicyopterus entered mostly during the day regardless of …

Functional Anatomy Of The Integument And Subcutaneous Structures Of The Head, Neck And Thorax Of The Domestic Turkey, Meleagris Gallopavo., Kumudini Nishantha De Silva Jan 1995

Functional Anatomy Of The Integument And Subcutaneous Structures Of The Head, Neck And Thorax Of The Domestic Turkey, Meleagris Gallopavo., Kumudini Nishantha De Silva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The microdissection of the integument and subcutaneous structures of the head, neck, and thorax of the Domestic Turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, revealed a complex system with several distinct layers of connective tissue, smooth and striated musculature, and fat bodies (corpora adiposa). These layers show structural variations across the body surface, and the patterns of variation of the different layers correlate with one another. The smooth apterial muscles and the striated subcutaneous muscles complement each other in moving certain feather tracts. Fat tissue is deposited in the dermis as dermal fat, in the Fascia superficialis, and in distinct fat bodies associated with …

Daily Variations Of Lipogenic Activities In Japanese Quail (Coturnix Coturnix Japonica)., Bruce L. Tedford Jan 1995

Daily Variations Of Lipogenic Activities In Japanese Quail (Coturnix Coturnix Japonica)., Bruce L. Tedford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies were made in Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica) to determine if daily variations of plasma insulin and de novo lipogenesis exists and examine the roles of daily variations in lipogenic responsiveness to insulin and prolactin. A daily variation in plasma insulin levels exists in quail fed ad libitum, with photophase levels 4.6 times greater than scotophase levels. This variation was not driven exclusively by the feeding of the quail, because insulin levels had dropped by dark onset, yet all bird's crops contained food at this time. There was a daily variation in the amount of $\sp{14}$C-acetate labelled lipids extracted …

A Comparison Of Ecological Factors Affecting Two Species Of Lotic Molluscs., Paul David Johnson Jan 1995

A Comparison Of Ecological Factors Affecting Two Species Of Lotic Molluscs., Paul David Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined habitat-mediated differences in the population structure of two species of stream molluscs, the Louisiana pearl-shell mussel, Margaritifera hembeli, a protected species, and Elimia semicarinata, a pleurocerid gastropod. In 1991 I located Margaritifera hembeli in a drainage system where it was previously unknown, and describe here the distribution of M. hembeli in the Bayou Rigolette drainage in Grant Parish, Louisiana. The mussel was limited to small second- and third-order lotic systems. Of several physicochemical and habitat parameters, specific conductance, Ca$\sp{+2}$ concentration, sediment particle size, sediment compaction and channel width were most important in explaining abundance. Substratum stability was …

Bamboo Specialization In Amazonian Birds., Andrew Ward Kratter Jan 1995

Bamboo Specialization In Amazonian Birds., Andrew Ward Kratter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

By spot-mapping territories of lowland forest birds in southeastern Peru, 19 "bamboo specialists" were documented to be restricted to thickets of bamboo (Guadua weberbaueri). Six specialists are restricted to thickets throughout their entire geographic range (obligate bamboo users); seven specialists may use other habitats sparingly away from southeastern Peru (near-obligate bamboo users); the remaining six species are frequent users of habitats lacking bamboo in area besides southeastern Peru (facultative bamboo users). The 19 specialists, all insectivorous, were classified into five guilds based on foraging maneuver and substrate preferences: four sallying tyrannid species; four arboreal antbirds; four stem-searching specialists; four dead-leaf-searching …

Daily Variations In Protein Synthesis And Tissue Responsiveness To Growth Hormone, Prolactin And Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I In The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis Baird And Girard., Zeleke Negatu Jan 1995

Daily Variations In Protein Synthesis And Tissue Responsiveness To Growth Hormone, Prolactin And Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I In The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis Baird And Girard., Zeleke Negatu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Circadian variations of $\sp{14}$C-glycine incorporation into protein and the responsiveness of muscle tissue to growth hormone, prolactin and insulin-like growth factor-I were examined in gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis. Incorporation of label during a 5 h period following $\sp{14}$C-glycine injection was tested at different times of day (LD 12:12). Incorporation varied during the day in all the tissues examined (scale, muscle, liver and intestine). The times of peak incorporations differed among the tissues. Scales showed peak incorporation during the dark hours. Peak incorporation by muscle occurred at the onset of light. These patterns were similar in male and female fish. The …

Elevation Of The Hatching Envelope In Penaeidea Shrimp: Morphology And Assembly., Patricia Stoops Glas Jan 1994

Elevation Of The Hatching Envelope In Penaeidea Shrimp: Morphology And Assembly., Patricia Stoops Glas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The appearance of extracellular coats around "eggs" are associated with activation of the oocytes. This coat, termed fertilization envelope (sea urchins), chorion (fish), zona pellucida (mammals), capsule (crab) or hatching envelope (HE) (shrimp) serves as a polyspermy block (Wasserman, 1982) or microenvironment protecting the egg from bacteria or other hostile elements (Kudo and Inoue, 1989; Kudo and Teshima, 1991; Kudo, 1992; Epel, 1993). HE assembly is described for penaeoid shrimp (Lynn, et al., 1991) and is, in contrast to many systems, a fertilization independent event. However, the mechanisms of assembly appear similar to extracellular coat formation in other animal systems …

Comparisons Of Spontaneous Mutation Rates And Estimates Of Numbers Of Cell Divisions In The Germlines Of Three Metazoans., Joni Boncille Drost Jan 1993

Comparisons Of Spontaneous Mutation Rates And Estimates Of Numbers Of Cell Divisions In The Germlines Of Three Metazoans., Joni Boncille Drost

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Germline mutation rates measured per generation per locus in three species of Metazoa are used to address questions of the constancy of mutation rates per generation, per year and per germcell division. Null mutation rates per generation are: 3.6 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for human X-linked disease, 8.9 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for Specific Locus Test (SLT) in male mice, 3.2 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLT in female mice, 8.0 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLT in male Drosophila melanogaster (D.m.), 1.6 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLRL test in male D.m. and 2.0 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLRL test in female D.m. They were found to be very similar …

Interaction Between Hydrodynamics And Sediment Topography On Meiofaunal Abundance And Distribution., Bin Sun Jan 1993

Interaction Between Hydrodynamics And Sediment Topography On Meiofaunal Abundance And Distribution., Bin Sun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the small-scale spatial and abundance patterns of meiofauna and their relationship with sediment microtopography and hydrodynamics. Meiofauna are known to be aggregated at small spatial scales. A study was first undertaken to determine, how patchiness differed over seasons and habitats. Significant small-scale aggregations were remarkably consistent across different seasons and habitats for all abundant copepods of an intertidal mudflat. Spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that the abundance of copepods was autocorrelated at short distances (cm scale) on all sample collecting dates, indicating a consistent spatial pattern. Small-scale variation contributed heavily to the components …

Genetic And Systematic Study Of Viviparus Georgianus (Lea), A Freshwater Snail Species Complex., Masaya Katoh Jan 1992

Genetic And Systematic Study Of Viviparus Georgianus (Lea), A Freshwater Snail Species Complex., Masaya Katoh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Genetic and morphological variation were studied in a brooding (ovoviviparous) and morphologically variable freshwater snail (Viviparus georgianus (Lea)) in the southeastern United States. Eleven populations were clustered into three genetically isolated, allopatric species characterized by 7 to 15 diagnostic loci out of the 38 loci examined. These allopatric species were an eastern species (in eastern and southern Florida), a western species (in the Florida panhandle), and a central species in the Ochlockonee River. Nei's standard genetic distances between species were large (0.23-0.52) compared to within-species distances (0.00-0.06). Moreover, genetic distances between the Ochlockonee River species and other species were larger …

Molecular Phylogenies And Biogeography Of Central American Birds., Shannon J. Hackett Jan 1992

Molecular Phylogenies And Biogeography Of Central American Birds., Shannon J. Hackett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents data on the biogeography and molecular systematics of seven independent lineages of birds; both allozyme and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) characters were used. The purpose of this study was to discover biogeographic patterns among endemic taxa distributed in the highlands and lowlands of southern Central America and sister taxa in either North or South America. Analyses of the genera Diglossa, Buarremon, Pselliophorus, and Pezopetes suggested a complex biogeographic pattern in the highlands of southern Central America; divergence of some highland lineages occurred relatively recently (during the Pleistocene), after the landbridge connection between Central and South America was completed, …

Timed Daily Thermopulses Alter The Circadian Hormonal Regulation Of Glucose And Lipid Metabolism., Christopher Joseph De Souza Jan 1991

Timed Daily Thermopulses Alter The Circadian Hormonal Regulation Of Glucose And Lipid Metabolism., Christopher Joseph De Souza

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies were made in Syrian hamsters and Holtzman rats to examine roles for circadian rhythms in the control of body fats stores. Baseline and circadian rhythms of plasma insulin varied seasonally in the Syrian hamster. Baseline concentrations of the hormone were almost 4 times greater in scotosensitive female hamsters held on short daily photoperiods when they were fat than in lean animals at other seasons and other photoperiodic schedules. Additionally, plasma insulin levels in fat hamsters, but not in lean animals, peaked at light onset when lipogenic responsiveness to insulin is greatest. The circadian rhythms of plasma insulin are not …

Mean ($\pm$ s.e.) study unit size was 2220 $\pm$ 246 ha. No food plots were installed on the remaining 2 study units (controls). Warm-season food plots were planted with American jointvetch (Aeschynomene americana); cool-season plots were planted with red clover (Trifolium pratense), subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum), winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) and white clover (Trifolium repens). All plots were maintained …

Habitat Use, Movements, And Behavior Of Shiny Cowbirds In Southwestern Puerto Rico., Paul Michael Mckenzie Jan 1990

Habitat Use, Movements, And Behavior Of Shiny Cowbirds In Southwestern Puerto Rico., Paul Michael Mckenzie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Shiny Cowbirds were primarily located in six major areas of concentration. Of these, all but one was in mesquite woodland. Overall, cowbirds used mesquite woodland almost 75% of the time but use of this habitat varied among weekly periods and was linked to rainfall received during weekly periods prior to the observation. Habitat use of cowbirds and the time they spent eating particular prey items were most correlated with total rainfall received 2-5 weeks prior to the observation (p =.0067 and p =.0149, respectively). Major food items taken by cowbirds following periods of sufficient rainfall were caterpillars, berries and grass …

Brugia Pahangi: Effects Of Maternal Filariasis On The Responses Of Their Progeny To Homologous Infection., Stephen Carl Bosshardt Jan 1990

Brugia Pahangi: Effects Of Maternal Filariasis On The Responses Of Their Progeny To Homologous Infection., Stephen Carl Bosshardt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of in utero and neonatal exposure to maternal Brugia pahangi infections on the development of homologous infections, immune responses, and pathologic lesions was studied in age-matched progeny of infected and uninfected female jirds. High IgG antibody titers to B. pahangi antigens were present in the sera of progeny from infected mothers. These neonatal titers to homologous antigens were shown to be of maternal origin, and did not alter the cellular responses of uninfected progeny as measured by in vitro antigen-stimulated blastogenesis and in vivo pulmonary granulomatous inflammatory responses to antigen-coated beads. Studies were conducted to measure age-related differences …

Ecology Of Small Insectivorous Birds In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest., Wylie Clark Barrow Jr Jan 1990

Ecology Of Small Insectivorous Birds In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest., Wylie Clark Barrow Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Changes in species composition and abundance, habitat use patterns and foraging behavior of 19 bird species in a bottomland hardwood forest in Louisiana were studied during the 1984-1989 breeding seasons. Species that used only one macrohabitat included the Yellow-throated Warbler along oxbow lake margins and the American Redstart, Swainson's Warbler, and Hooded Warbler in non-flooded oak-gum-elm forest. The Northern Parula and Kentucky Warbler used 2 macrohabitats--non-flooded forest and oxbow lake margins. Thirteen species used 3 macrohabitats (non-flooded forest, seasonally flooded forest, and oxbow lake margins). I distinguished 6 groups of species that used similar microhabitat and foraging behavior. Ecological partitioning …

Effects Of Artificial Mineral Licks On White-Tailed Deer., Stephen Redmore Schultz Jan 1990

Effects Of Artificial Mineral Licks On White-Tailed Deer., Stephen Redmore Schultz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A commercial mineral mixture for deer was used to evaluate the effects of broad-spectrum dietary mineral supplementation on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) growth, antler development, and tissue mineral content. Forty-two artificial mineral licks for deer were established on 3 study areas in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. All licks were monitored monthly, recharged to original level if used, and mineral consumption recorded from May 1988 through December 1989. Consumption data were converted to estimated average per deer values based on population estimates. Effects of artificial lick mineral consumption on free-ranging deer were examined by comparing deer harvested during the 1988-89 and …
