Electronic Communication Channels In Franchise Organizations., Michael Hebert Dickey Jan 2001

Electronic Communication Channels In Franchise Organizations., Michael Hebert Dickey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The virtual organization has emerged as a result of the availability of information technology. One business model well suited to the virtual form is franchising. Since the success of franchise organizations is highly dependent on communication effectiveness, these organizations are beginning to adopt technology---namely, private corporate networks called intranets and extranets---to support electronic communication. This research study examines the effects of electronic communication channels on communication patterns within franchise organizations. First, the study addresses how electronic communication channels affect communication frequency within the franchise organization. Second, the effect of electronic communication channels on strategic outcomes, specifically, innovation, franchisee satisfaction, and …

Team -Member Exchange And Trust Contexts: Effects On Individual Level Outcome Variables Beyond The Influence Of Leader -Member Exchange., Barbara Ann Wech Jan 2001

Team -Member Exchange And Trust Contexts: Effects On Individual Level Outcome Variables Beyond The Influence Of Leader -Member Exchange., Barbara Ann Wech

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Researchers and theorists have recognized the importance of multilevel research to gain a better understanding of organizational behavior. In particular, there is a need to assess leader-member exchange in the context within which the relationship takes place. This study assessed the associated effect of leader-member exchange and two contextual variables, team-member exchange and trust context, on individual performance, organizational citizenship behavior, fairness perceptions, and job satisfaction. At the individual level, supervisor ratings of leader-member exchange were positively associated with performance, organizational citizenship behavior directed at both individuals and the organization, fairness, and job satisfaction. Contextual effects were found for both …

The Early Identification Of Business Leaders: The Development And Validation Of A Leadership Potential Instrument., Robert Leroy Zehner Jan 2001

The Early Identification Of Business Leaders: The Development And Validation Of A Leadership Potential Instrument., Robert Leroy Zehner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Business organizations spend a great of resources identifying and developing high potential leaders to ensure the continuity of their enterprises. Much of the time and money spent identifying potential leaders is applied inappropriately to employees who are not potential leaders. Many of these valuable employees enter the leadership stream seeking recognition only to find frustration and disappointment. The purpose of this study was to develop a cost effective tool that accurately identifies potential leaders from new professional employees entering a midsize specialty chemical company. By identifying potential leaders early in their employment career, time and energy could be devoted to …

Voluntary Accounting Policy Choices Of Lower -Level Firms In Multi -Firm Organizations., Allen Kenneth Hunt Jan 2001

Voluntary Accounting Policy Choices Of Lower -Level Firms In Multi -Firm Organizations., Allen Kenneth Hunt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the determinants of accounting choices for subsidiary firms in multi-firm organizations. A "subsidiary" is defined as either a company that is controlled (i.e., more than 50 percent ownership) by another corporation (its "parent") or is a firm under the parent company's influence (i.e., between 20 and 50 percent ownership). Previous studies focus exclusively on the parent company; hence little is known about making accounting procedure choices for subsidiaries. As a separate legal entity, a subsidiary's accounting policies should be of interest to its creditors, regulators, and noncontrolling minority-interest shareholders. The accounting procedure choices investigated are depreciation and …

Breaking The Silence: Toward An Understanding Of Speaking Up In The Workplace., Sonya Fontenot Premeaux Jan 2001

Breaking The Silence: Toward An Understanding Of Speaking Up In The Workplace., Sonya Fontenot Premeaux

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although management scholars and practitioners emphasize the importance of employee input to organizational success, research suggests that many workers are hesitant to express an opinion or voice a view because they fear repercussions. In this dissertation, I focus on the issue of employee workplace expression, introducing the concept of speaking up. I define speaking up as "openly stating one's views or opinions about workplace issues." Speaking up is distinguished from several related concepts that fall within a common construct space. Drawing on expectancy theory (Vroom, 1964) and the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1988, 1991), I explain the process believed …

Essays On The Gain -Loss Pricing Model., Kevin Chun-Hsiung Chiang Jan 2000

Essays On The Gain -Loss Pricing Model., Kevin Chun-Hsiung Chiang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation conducts empirical examinations of a new normative (equilibrium) model, the Gain-Loss Pricing Model (GLPM) of Lin (1999a), in which loss aversion is intuitively incorporated into investors' portfolio decisions. In this equilibrium, the risk-return relation is based on the tradeoff between the expected market-related gain of an asset and its expected market-related loss. In addition to its economic intuition, the new model is shown to be more robust than the mean-variance-based Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). This dissertation consists of two essays. The first essay examines the empirical power of the GLPM using NYSE/AMEX/NASDAQ stocks. This testing framework has …

Third -Party Organization Endorsement Of Products: An Advertising Cue Affecting Consumer Pre-Purchase Evaluation Of Goods And Services., Dwane Hal Dean Jan 2000

Third -Party Organization Endorsement Of Products: An Advertising Cue Affecting Consumer Pre-Purchase Evaluation Of Goods And Services., Dwane Hal Dean

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Observation of advertising in current use suggests that a new type of ad is emerging as a product positioning tool. The new ad features third-party organization (TPO) product endorsement as one of the elements of the ad (e.g. "Car of the Year" award by Motor Trend magazine, and "4-star" mutual fund rating from Morningstar). Marketers appear to be using favorable TPO statements about their products to enact their positioning strategy. This dissertation proposed that TPO endorsements are perceived by consumers as extrinsic quality cues, similar to the established quality cues of brand, price, retailer reputation, and warranty. This proposition was …

Organizational Cognitive Complexity: Determinants And Consequences., Stern Parker Neill Jan 2000

Organizational Cognitive Complexity: Determinants And Consequences., Stern Parker Neill

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Marketing strategy formation is a complex process. Strategic decision-making involves participation by multiple organizational members with diverse and sometimes conflicting viewpoints. Beyond the cognitive capacity of individual decision-makers, marketing strategy develops through an emergent process that engages the collective efforts and interpretive capabilities of various representatives of the organization. This study examines the relationships among organizational context, processes, and outcomes. Specifically, organizations are examined as cognitive units stimulated by perceived environmental turbulence, team functional diversity, and an open-minded culture. These factors enhance cognitive complexity, which is the organization's capacity to perceive its environment in a multidimensional way. With greater cognitive …

The Effect Of Negative Events And Firm Responses On Brand Associations, Organizational Associations, And Brand Evaluations., Chris Patrick Pullig Jan 2000

The Effect Of Negative Events And Firm Responses On Brand Associations, Organizational Associations, And Brand Evaluations., Chris Patrick Pullig

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the impact of negative events and firm responses to such events on an associative network of brand knowledge; key consumer brand and organizational associations, risk perceptions, and brand response variables. To accomplish this objective the issue of how negative event information is integrated with an existing brand/organizational image was assessed within the framework of a consumer-brand relationship. Two between-subjects experiments were conducted using adult consumers as subjects. In Study One, negative events were found to affect associations linked to the brand and limit the brand's ability to fulfill the consumer-brand relationship. Two types of events were identified, …

The Effects Of Comparative Advertising Format On Consumer Responses: The Moderating Effects Of Brand Image And Attribute Relevance., Mehmet Ismail Yagci Jan 2000

The Effects Of Comparative Advertising Format On Consumer Responses: The Moderating Effects Of Brand Image And Attribute Relevance., Mehmet Ismail Yagci

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Comparative advertising has become a popular and powerful promotion tactic for companies competing in a highly competitive marketplace. While most research examined comparison advertisements, focusing on one brand being compared to a competitor brand, "within-brand comparison" advertising has been neglected. Within-brand comparison advertising compares the attributes of an extension brand with the attributes of an original or replaced brand. This dissertation examines the relative effectiveness of two forms of comparative advertising tactics, "within-brand comparison" versus "across-brand comparison". The moderating effects of "brand image" and "attribute relevance" and the mediating effect of "ad believability" are also assessed by an experiment. Based …

Personal Factors Affecting Sales Performance: Modeling The Effects Of Experience, Competitiveness, Self -Efficacy, Effort, And Creativity., Guangping Wang Jan 2000

Personal Factors Affecting Sales Performance: Modeling The Effects Of Experience, Competitiveness, Self -Efficacy, Effort, And Creativity., Guangping Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sales performance represents an important ongoing research stream to both academicians and practitioners. It is widely recognized that personal/individual factors affect how salespeople perform. Despite the numerous studies, the search for the most powerful determinants of salesperson performance has largely been unsuccessful (Churchill et al. 1985). This dissertation makes another attempt to understand the effects of select personal factors on salespeople's performance. In particular, a neglected personal factor, salesperson creativity, is introduced as a direct predictor of performance. Based on the social psychological research on creativity and the in-depth personal interviews with sales managers in various industries, the author defines …

Virtual Teams: An Investigation Of The Determinants Of Team Effectiveness And The Contribution Of Managerial Behavior Control., Gabriele Piccoli Jan 2000

Virtual Teams: An Investigation Of The Determinants Of Team Effectiveness And The Contribution Of Managerial Behavior Control., Gabriele Piccoli

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Information Technology is providing the backbone for development of new organizational forms. Virtual teams represent one such organizational form that has the potential to change the workplace and provide organizations with increased levels of flexibility and responsiveness. Many organizations are recognizing these potential benefits and are implementing virtual teams. A gap exists in the current Information Systems literature. No previous study has looked at the role of managerial control mechanisms in fostering virtual team effectiveness. This study contributes a model of virtual team effectiveness based on an extension of research in traditional environments. The contribution of managerial behavior control practices …

The Financial And Operational Performance Implications Of Compensation Practices: A Study Of Relative Wage Practices And Pay Structures., Mark Patton Brown Jan 2000

The Financial And Operational Performance Implications Of Compensation Practices: A Study Of Relative Wage Practices And Pay Structures., Mark Patton Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research examines the organizational performance implications of relative wage strategies and pay structures. Organizations' relative wage strategies and pay structures are key characteristics useful in describing and delimiting various compensation systems, and are therefore particularly relevant for evaluation at the organizational level. The organizational performance implications of organizations' relative wage strategies and pay structures are investigated in terms of both operational and financial indicators of organizational performance. Initially, relevant theory and past research on relative wage strategies and pay structures are discussed. Following this, hypotheses are developed that predict the operational and financial performance implications of pay structures and …

Workplace Whining: Antecedents And Process Of Noninstrumental Complaining., Anita Konieczka Heck Jan 2000

Workplace Whining: Antecedents And Process Of Noninstrumental Complaining., Anita Konieczka Heck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a conceptual scheme that advances understanding of workplace whining. It reports an investigation into eight theoretically relevant antecedents to workplace whining, classified into four categories (i.e., dispositional, attitudinal, relational, behavioral). Additionally, it explores the role of organization-based self-esteem in mediating the link between each antecedent and workplace whining. Kowalski's (1996) theory of complaining and self-esteem theory (Coopersmith, 1967, Epstein, 1973; Jones, 1973; Leary & Downs, 1995, Mruk, 1995; Pierce et al., 1989) provided the primary theoretical underpinnings for a series of hypothesized relationships. Data on 471 schoolteachers and their immediate supervisors from …

An Investigation Of Intra -Strategic Group Profiles, Performance And Reputation., Tamela Dawn Ferguson Jan 2000

An Investigation Of Intra -Strategic Group Profiles, Performance And Reputation., Tamela Dawn Ferguson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current strategic group research generally provides collectively meaningful assessments of strategic group averages or median-based profiles. While this approach facilitates inter-group contrasts and performance predictions, potentially valuable information contained in intra-group differences (i.e., core-periphery-fringe zones) typically is overlooked. This multi-study research adopts a more fine-grained approach to strategic group analysis by investigating intra-group competitive profile and performance differences across such zones, both within and across groups. Study I of this series identifies intra-strategic group zones that differ in strategic competitive profile and performance. Study II assesses how strategic groups and related intra-group zones might change over time, the stability of …

Comprehensive Income And Its Relation To Firm Value And Transitory Earnings., Carol Callaway Dee Jan 1999

Comprehensive Income And Its Relation To Firm Value And Transitory Earnings., Carol Callaway Dee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The distinction between permanent and transitory earnings is important when using accounting earnings to predict future dividends. To the extent that net income includes transitory items, it is less useful in predicting future dividends, and thus, less useful in valuing the firm. If comprehensive income includes more transitory items than net income, it is less useful than net income in valuing the firm. This study contributes to the literature in two ways. First, a definition of permanent earnings is developed that is based on the relation between earnings and expected future dividends. The study illustrates the relation between permanent, transitory, …

Executive Compensation And The Investment Opportunity Sets Of Initial Public Offerings., Tanya S. Nowlin Jan 1999

Executive Compensation And The Investment Opportunity Sets Of Initial Public Offerings., Tanya S. Nowlin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines how the components of CEO compensation contracts vary with characteristics of initial public offering firms (IPOs). There are two major steps in the analysis. The first step investigates whether IPOs exhibit variation in characteristics that theory predicts affect compensation contracts. The second step investigates whether these differences across firms are related to the use of accounting versus non-accounting performance evaluation measures, levels of base salary and cash bonuses, and the value of stock options for CEOs. Results from this study support the importance of modeling compensation components separately. Theoretical constructs differ depending on the type of compensation …

The Perceptions Of Members Of Boards Of Directors For State Associations Serving Community-Based Development Organizations Regarding *Policy And Governance., Ernie Troy Hughes Jan 1999

The Perceptions Of Members Of Boards Of Directors For State Associations Serving Community-Based Development Organizations Regarding *Policy And Governance., Ernie Troy Hughes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of members of boards of directors for state associations serving CBDOs regarding policy and governance, procedures and how they are achieving organizational goals and objectives. The target population for the study was defined as members of boards of directors of state associations serving CBDOs. The instrument used in this study was a researcher designed questionnaire. It was comprised of two sections---demographics and perceptions of the roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments of the organization. As the literature review established, boards of directors play an important role in the life of associations …

Executive Compensation, Performance, Board And Ownership Structure: A Simultaneous Equations Approach., Ayalew A. Lulseged Jan 1999

Executive Compensation, Performance, Board And Ownership Structure: A Simultaneous Equations Approach., Ayalew A. Lulseged

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Incentive contracts and monitoring by boards of directors and blockholders are alternative internal mechanisms to ensure that managers act in the interests of shareholders. Most prior research on compensation and performance ignores endogeneity among board, ownership and compensation structure (mix of pay) variables. Ignoring the endogeneity leads to inconsistent parameter estimates. I address the endogeneity problem by using a simultaneous equations model. The three equations in the system are mix of pay, compensation and performance. The results are consistent with efficient contracting. Mix of pay depends on characteristics of the firm and alternative governance mechanisms. The relation between stockholders and …

The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge Jan 1999

The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research addressed the question of the importance of the service encounter (both functional and social support components) and the importance of the technical component in consumers' judgements of service quality. To date in the literature no one has attempted to measure in a field setting, the relative contribution to the judgement of service quality of each of these components. This research switched the focus of the service quality's definition from the provider's point of view to the consumer. By measuring the three service components' importance, the researcher hoped to obtain a clearer understanding of the consumer's determination as to …

On Biodata Construct Validity, Criterion-Related Validity, And Adverse Impact., Michelle Ann Dean Jan 1999

On Biodata Construct Validity, Criterion-Related Validity, And Adverse Impact., Michelle Ann Dean

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the personnel selection technique of biographical information (biodata) in terms of theory, criterion-related validity, and adverse impact. First, the construct validity of biodata was examined to determine if biodata theory was useful in explaining biodata's strong criterion validity. Items from an existing biodata inventory were mapped onto construct domains drawn from Mumford, Stokes, and Owens' (1990) ecology model. Relationships between subjects' biodata responses and training performance was examined for consistency with the model's predictions in an organizational sample. The ecology model did not fit the data well. Follow up exploratory analyses did yield good fit when the …

Quantitative Modeling And Information System Support For Just -In -Time Partnership., Faisal Badi Al-Khateeb Jan 1999

Quantitative Modeling And Information System Support For Just -In -Time Partnership., Faisal Badi Al-Khateeb

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Just-in-Time (JIT) supply calls for frequent, small deliveries, which arrive on time, with the quantity and quality required. For JIT to be effective there should be a cooperative relationship between the buyer and the supplier. They should work together to enhance their competitive positions in the market place. This study extends the quantitative models published in the literature to provide more realistic models for JIT operations and evaluates the costs and benefits of JIT partnerships to help in the negotiation process between the partners. We provide a new model for the optimization of the joint total relevant cost of the …

Incomplete Acquisitions: The Valuation And Performance Effects Of Changes In Control., Karyn Lynn Neuhauser Jan 1999

Incomplete Acquisitions: The Valuation And Performance Effects Of Changes In Control., Karyn Lynn Neuhauser

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation provides an extensive examination of a corporate control transaction that has not been previously examined in the finance literature, an incomplete acquisition. An incomplete acquisition is defined as an offer for a sufficient amount of equity in a target firm to give the bidder effective control that is not accompanied by a disclosed intention to acquire the remaining minority shares. An original database of incomplete acquisitions is developed and used to examine three major aspects of these unique control transactions. First, descriptive data about the prevalence of incomplete acquisitions and the mechanisms that are used to effect these …

Equity Issuance In Mexico., Arun Kumar Tandon Jan 1999

Equity Issuance In Mexico., Arun Kumar Tandon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the equity issuance process from an international perspective. Specifically, it examines the underpricing, long run stock price performance and operating performance of Mexican ADR IPOs compared to that of domestic Mexican IPOs. This study also examines the share price response to global seasoned equity offerings by Mexican firms. Mexican IPOs and global seasoned equity issues by Mexican firms are further distinguished based on the nature of the foreign tranche, that is whether it is a Level III (public offering) or a 144A (private placement) issue. This distinction is maintained throughout the study owing to the differences and …

Gendered Experiences Of Public Accounting Firms: Organizational Commitment And Intentions To Leave., Harriet Lynn Stallworth Jan 1998

Gendered Experiences Of Public Accounting Firms: Organizational Commitment And Intentions To Leave., Harriet Lynn Stallworth

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The under representation of female public accountants in the upper echelons of public accounting organizations is recognized as problematic by both these firms and the accounting profession. The problem is confounded by women's higher turnover rate at each organizational level within these firms. The purpose of this study is to examine women's and men's experiences of the public accounting work environment in order to provide some insight into why women are more likely to leave these firms. The research questions to be addressed are (1) whether, and specifically, how, do males' and females' experiences of the public accounting work environment …

A Social Cognitive Theory Model Of Salesperson Performance., Robert Chapman Mcmurrian Jan 1998

A Social Cognitive Theory Model Of Salesperson Performance., Robert Chapman Mcmurrian

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A primary objective of marketing practitioners, especially sales managers in organizations with personal selling functions and salesforces, has been an understanding of the factors related to effective sales performance. Much of the current research dedicated to understanding these factors has been grounded in Vroom's expectancy theory. Expectancy theory posits that successful performance of a task is a function of the level of effort that a person expends on the task. There are three factors that influence this level of effort: (1) an expectation that effort will result in better task performance; (2) a belief that better performance will result in …

Multilocation Inventory Systems With Centralized Information., Jianxin Hu Jan 1998

Multilocation Inventory Systems With Centralized Information., Jianxin Hu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The management of multi-echelon inventory systems has been both an important and challenging research area for many years. The rapid advance in information technology and the emphasis on integrated supply chain management have new implications for the successful operation of distribution systems. This research focuses on the study of some fundamental issues related to the operation of a multilocation inventory system with centralized information. First, we do a comparative analysis to evaluate the overall performance of individual versus centralized ordering policies for a multi-store distribution system where centralized information is available. This study integrates the existing research and clarifies one …

Understanding Performance Differences In Small Family Firms: A Resource-Based View., Janet Baulos Runge Jan 1998

Understanding Performance Differences In Small Family Firms: A Resource-Based View., Janet Baulos Runge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examined the resource-based view of the firm to explain performance differences among family businesses. How do resources impact strategy and performance in the family firm and what resources are important to strategy and performance in the family firm were the primary research questions. Hypothesized relationships between reputation and financial resources, between human resources, financial resources, and physical resources and strategic perspective, and between strategic perspective and performance were tested in sample of family owned/operated retail jewelry stores. Structural equation modeling (LISREL 8) was used to develop a measurement model and structural model to test the patterns of relationships …

Managing Promises And Marketing Activities In The Cultivation Of Long-Term Relationship Commitment: The Development Of A Model For The Services Industries., John Michael Weber Jan 1998

Managing Promises And Marketing Activities In The Cultivation Of Long-Term Relationship Commitment: The Development Of A Model For The Services Industries., John Michael Weber

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The concept of promises is important with services, because they can represent some tangible aspect of the service organization upon which the customer can develop expectations and partially evaluate the performance of the organization. It is also important to examine the marketing processes (external, internal, and interactive) the organization utilizes and the consumer can participate in, because these processes act as the communication avenue for the promises. Finally, it is important to evaluate the promises and marketing processes from the perspective of the consumer in order to determine the consumer's expectations, perception of service personnel, evaluations of actual service delivery, …

A Case For Procedural Justice Climate: Development And Test Of A Multilevel Model., Stefanie Elizabeth Naumann Jan 1998

A Case For Procedural Justice Climate: Development And Test Of A Multilevel Model., Stefanie Elizabeth Naumann

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current conceptualizations of procedural justice focus largely on individual perceptions; no framework exists for examining procedural justice's social context. This dissertation presents a model that identifies contextual factors contributing to procedural justice climate and, in turn, a variety of work-related attitudes and behaviors associated with procedural justice climate. In general, empirical tests on data collected from 220 employees of two banks offered support for the model. Employee perceptions of leader member exchange, organizational support, and supervisor monitoring were positively associated with individual procedural justice perceptions. Work group perceptions of cohesion and supervisor visibility in demonstrating procedural justice were associated with …
