An Analytical Study Of Concerto For Piano And Orchestra, Op.13, By Costa Rican Composer Carolos Enrique Vargas, Manuel Matarrita Jan 2004

An Analytical Study Of Concerto For Piano And Orchestra, Op.13, By Costa Rican Composer Carolos Enrique Vargas, Manuel Matarrita

LSU Major Papers

Carlos Enrique Vargas Méndez (1919-1998) was one of the most influential and versatile Costa Rican musicians of the last century. His work involved many areas since he was an accomplished pianist and organist, conductor, composer, arranger, editor, pedagogue and musicologist. However, Vargas’ work as a composer is perhaps the least researched and most neglected of the music disciplines he embraced. This research will focus on one of Vargas’ most important compositions, his Piano Concerto Op. 13, composed and premiered in 1944. The monograph is divided into four chapters. The first chapter includes a synopsis of the history of composition in …

An Introduction For The Singer To The Solo Vocal Works Of Nigel Butterley With Particular Emphasis On His Works Between 1976 And 2003, Alison Rosemary Mccubbin Jan 2004

An Introduction For The Singer To The Solo Vocal Works Of Nigel Butterley With Particular Emphasis On His Works Between 1976 And 2003, Alison Rosemary Mccubbin

LSU Major Papers

For years, Australian composer Nigel Butterley (b.1935 ) has composed a variety of types of composition for voice which are little-known outside of Australia, but which nonetheless merit consideration and performance. This dissertation is an effort to introduce more performers to his work, and to facilitate future performances of it. Central to any performance of his works is an understanding of his desire to integrate the poetic and textual structures of the original pieces into his own musical setting of those pieces, and in so doing to highlight the themes of the originals. Performers can gain insight into the significance …

The Influence Of Bulgarian Folk Music On Petar Christoskov's Suites And Rhapsodies For Solo Violin, Blagomira Paskaleva Lipari Jan 2004

The Influence Of Bulgarian Folk Music On Petar Christoskov's Suites And Rhapsodies For Solo Violin, Blagomira Paskaleva Lipari

LSU Major Papers

Petar Christoskov, born in 1917 in Sofia, is among the most prolific of Bulgarian violinists, pedagogues and composers of the twentieth century. Christoskov’s Suites and Rhapsodies for solo violin represent both an internal evolution of Bulgarian music and an incorporation of the Bulgarian musical tradition into the larger world music scene. Bulgaria’s folk musical tradition was routinely infused and enriched over the course of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Christoskov’s efforts were presaged and made possible by a host of earlier composers and performers. But the evolution of the Bulgarian style was also shaped by larger historical trends and …

What Next?: The German Strategy Crisis During The Summer Of 1940, Leonard Spencer Cooley Jan 2004

What Next?: The German Strategy Crisis During The Summer Of 1940, Leonard Spencer Cooley

LSU Major Papers

The German blitzkrieg across France during May 1940 was the culmination of three years of daring political and military moves that had brought most of Europe under German control. It was the German dictator Adolf Hitler who had outguessed his advisors. Yet, Hitler's bold moves in Western Europe ended with his army's dash across France, and the failure to strike Great Britain that summer when the British were at one of the weakest points in their entire history. After Germany defeated France, Hitler began a fruitless period of waiting for Great Britain to sue for peace. Unlike Hitler, some in …

Hydroclimatic And Circulation Anomalies Associated With The North Atlantic Subtropical High, Brian Taylor Allen Jan 2004

Hydroclimatic And Circulation Anomalies Associated With The North Atlantic Subtropical High, Brian Taylor Allen

LSU Master's Theses

Hydroclimatic and circulation variability in regions around the Atlantic sector are linked to the intensity, location, and areal extent of the North Atlantic subtropical high (STH). Few analyses focus directly on the influence of the STH on climatic variability. Using sea level pressure (SLP) data from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis dataset, a time series of the STH was produced using principal components analysis (PCA) to describe the temporal variability of the STH from January 1948 to December 2001. A simple area average of SLP across the PCA domain is shown to describe the same phenomena (the dominant mode of the STH …

Characteristics Of Hurricane Lili's Intensity Changes, Adele Marie Babin Jan 2004

Characteristics Of Hurricane Lili's Intensity Changes, Adele Marie Babin

LSU Master's Theses

Rapid intensity changes of Hurricane Lili in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) were studied in three distinct ways: climatology, satellite remote sensing, and surface meteorological and oceanographic measurements. Each research methodology provided insight about Hurricane Lili's intensity behavior. A climatology of rapid and explosive intensifications of hurricanes was developed using minimum central pressure observations for the Atlantic tropical cyclone record. Results showed these events were frequent, especially in the GOM. The majority of intensification events occurred ≤ 24 h before landfall, with a third to one-half ≤ 12 h. Lili emerged anomalous as the only hurricane to weaken at a …

Molecular Genetics And Functions Of Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Glycoproteins In Viral Entry And Virus-Induced Cell Fusion, Rafael E. Luna Jan 2004

Molecular Genetics And Functions Of Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Glycoproteins In Viral Entry And Virus-Induced Cell Fusion, Rafael E. Luna

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is considered the etiologic agent of Kaposi’s sarcoma and several lymphoproliferative disorders. Recently, the full-length KSHV genome has been cloned into a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) and successfully recovered in 293 cells. The herpesviral glycoproteins are structural components of the KSHV particle and are thought to facilitate virus entry, egress and virus-induced cell fusion. Investigations, described herein, have focused on the genetic manipulation of the KSHV-BAC36 in order to address the role of K8.1 glycoprotein in virus entry and the role of the carboxyl tail a-helices of glycoprotein (gB) in virus-induced cell fusion. In addition, a …

I-Tal Foodways: Nourishing Rastafarian Bodies, Mandy Garner Dickerson Jan 2004

I-Tal Foodways: Nourishing Rastafarian Bodies, Mandy Garner Dickerson

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis takes a close look at the lived world of Jamaican Rastafarians through the lens of food-related practices and preferences, working to define the group's characteristic strategies for maintaining wellness and illuminating their tastes and sensibilities. It strives to evoke a sensorial and discursive awareness of the activities through which Rastafarians nourish and heal their physical and social bodies, by focusing on ways in which they produce and use I-tal food-medicines. Rastafarian taste for I-tal has developed alongside collective engagement with the valorization and revitalization of traditional knowledge about health and land use. In addition to providing sites for …

The Relationship Between Social Behavior And Mealtime Behavior Problems In Individuals With Severe And Profound Mental Retardation, David E. Kuhn Jan 2004

The Relationship Between Social Behavior And Mealtime Behavior Problems In Individuals With Severe And Profound Mental Retardation, David E. Kuhn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the defining features of mental retardation is a problem in adaptive functioning. An area of adaptive skills commonly deficient in this population is social functioning, often characterized as behaviors that provide individuals with the means to interact effectively and appropriately with others. Researchers in this area have generally focused on improving appropriate social behavior and/or decreasing behavioral excesses that interfere with social interactions. Few studies have examined the effects of improving social behavior on collateral behaviors. The current study examined the relationship between social behavior and feeding and mealtime problem behavior in individuals with mental retardation. Individuals across …
