Collaborative Writing In Petroleum Engineering: A Case Study Of Petroleum Engineers In An Academic Setting, Michael Anne Coffey Aug 1993

Collaborative Writing In Petroleum Engineering: A Case Study Of Petroleum Engineers In An Academic Setting, Michael Anne Coffey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Interest in collaborative writing has surged in composition studies since the mid-tolate 1980s; aspects addressed include motivation, the composing process, the kinds of participants, authorship, conflict, etc. Much composition research concentrates on collaboration in the workplace to gain an understanding of collaborative writing that can be readily transferred to the classroom and that can prepare students for the social, as opposed to solitary, act of writing—to encourage collaborative thought. In this study, I attempted to find out more about what occurs in the stages (prewriting, writing, post-writing) of collaborative writing. My subjects were petroleum engineers on university campuses. Departments were …

Cone Penetration In Cemented Deposits-A Field Study, Semih Arslan May 1993

Cone Penetration In Cemented Deposits-A Field Study, Semih Arslan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neglecting cementation results in an underestimation of slope stability and pile capacity in design and analysis of geotechnical engineering problems related to cemented deposits. Developing methods to identify and assess the engineering characteristics of cemented deposits is an important subject in geotechnical engineering.

This study is conducted to evaluate the reliability of the prediction schemes proposed by previous investigators through a field study of cone penetration in a cemented deposit and respective laboratory triaxial study on undisturbed cemented specimens. The effect of cementation on cone penetration resistance is investigated through the field study, and the effects of cementation on drained …

The Poetry In-Between: Presence And Absence In Whitman, Rimbaud, And Hopkins., Jonathan Flint Alexander Jan 1993

The Poetry In-Between: Presence And Absence In Whitman, Rimbaud, And Hopkins., Jonathan Flint Alexander

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

"The Poetry In-Between: Presence and Absence in Whitman, Rimbaud, and Hopkins" analyzes three major nineteenth-century poets and their development of a poetics which has as its chief focus of concern the issue of presencing an eternal and universal "Other" by which to assess self identity. After the Kantian critique and the seeming reduction of human knowledge to phenomenal perceptions, early nineteenth-century poets and theorists feared the entrapment and isolation of the self in subjective awareness. The romantics, such as Friedrich Schlegel, sought ways to overcome such alienating subjectivity and ultimately conceived of the poet as a privileged spokesman and arbiter …

Studies On Hepatitis A Virus: I. Expression Of Viral Capsid Peptides In Escherichia Coli And Their Application For An Immunoassay. Ii. Development Of An Assay For Viral Detection By Anti-Hav Antibodies., Luis Antonio Baez Jan 1993

Studies On Hepatitis A Virus: I. Expression Of Viral Capsid Peptides In Escherichia Coli And Their Application For An Immunoassay. Ii. Development Of An Assay For Viral Detection By Anti-Hav Antibodies., Luis Antonio Baez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A panel of eleven monoclonal antibodies of the IgG and IgM class were developed against the HM 175 strain of the Hepatitis A virus. Immunoglobulin specificity for the Hepatitis A virus was determined and the antibodies were applied toward the development of an antigen capture assay linked to a nucleic acid amplification step (RT-PCR), for detection of the Hepatitis A virus. The neutralizing mouse monoclonal antibody and a rabbit polyvalent serum were assessed as capture antibodies for the immunoaffinity stage of the assay. Fifty microliter microfuge tubes were coated with the capture antibody. Formalin inactivated HAV was diluted to concentrations …

Neo-Hamiltonian Republicans And Military Reform In The Progressive Era: 1898-1912., Ronald James Barr Jan 1993

Neo-Hamiltonian Republicans And Military Reform In The Progressive Era: 1898-1912., Ronald James Barr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Spanish-American War changed the course of American history. In a few months the United States acquired a colonial empire and adopted a policy of overseas involvement that greatly altered future world events. The political victory of a few military reformers and politicians, who endorsed Social Darwinism, over those who upheld the ideas of Jefferson and Jackson, destroyed the international isolation of the American republic. No matter what successive political administrations claimed, they inherited substantial overseas commitments. The group that engineered this profound change in American foreign and defence policy were led by Elihu Root, John Hay, Leonard Wood, Alfred …

Comparisons Of Spontaneous Mutation Rates And Estimates Of Numbers Of Cell Divisions In The Germlines Of Three Metazoans., Joni Boncille Drost Jan 1993

Comparisons Of Spontaneous Mutation Rates And Estimates Of Numbers Of Cell Divisions In The Germlines Of Three Metazoans., Joni Boncille Drost

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Germline mutation rates measured per generation per locus in three species of Metazoa are used to address questions of the constancy of mutation rates per generation, per year and per germcell division. Null mutation rates per generation are: 3.6 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for human X-linked disease, 8.9 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for Specific Locus Test (SLT) in male mice, 3.2 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLT in female mice, 8.0 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLT in male Drosophila melanogaster (D.m.), 1.6 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLRL test in male D.m. and 2.0 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLRL test in female D.m. They were found to be very similar …

Specificity Of Chaperonin Groel Binding To The Precursor Of The Small Subunit Of Ribulose-1,5-Bisphosphate Carboxylase., Carmen Wheelock Dessauer Jan 1993

Specificity Of Chaperonin Groel Binding To The Precursor Of The Small Subunit Of Ribulose-1,5-Bisphosphate Carboxylase., Carmen Wheelock Dessauer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although chaperonin-assisted protein folding has been studied in vitro by a number of investigators, the features of an unfolded or partially folded polypeptide that are recognized and bound by chaperonins are not known. I addressed this question using the precursor of the small subunit (pS) of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase as a model substrate for GroEL, the bacterial chaperonin. The precursor protein was expressed in E. coli as a C-terminal fusion to protein A. Protein A-pS (and any associated cellular proteins) was isolated by affinity chromatography. GroEL could be eluted from the fusion protein by ATP and either GroES or casein, consistent …

Wise Economies: Storytelling, Narrative Authority, And Brevity In The American Short Story, 1819-1980., Kirk Lee Curnutt Jan 1993

Wise Economies: Storytelling, Narrative Authority, And Brevity In The American Short Story, 1819-1980., Kirk Lee Curnutt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study proposes a new way of measuring brevity in the American short story. Since Edgar Allan Poe's definition of the tale, literary criticism has looked to various structural features within the text to define the elements that distinguish the short story from other prose genres like the novel. I argue that brevity is an essential feature of storytelling and suggest that its perception is molded and shaped by several historical factors. The phrase "wise economy" offers two ways of thinking about the conciseness of the form: it evokes a history of rhetorical economy central to the formation of a …
