Physiology And Lateralization Of Swallowing: A Comparison Between Young And Old Adults., Stephanie Kay Daniels Jan 2001

Physiology And Lateralization Of Swallowing: A Comparison Between Young And Old Adults., Stephanie Kay Daniels

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Age-related changes in discrete swallows have been well researched, but few studies have investigated sequential swallowing with little emphasis on age-related changes. It is also unclear whether the cortical representation of swallowing is lateralized to one hemisphere or is bilaterally represented. As such, the aims of this research were to examine deglutitive biomechanics of sequential straw swallowing (Experiment I), and study swallowing lateralization using a dual task paradigm in healthy, young and old adults (Experiment II). Thirty-eight right-handed men (young = 20, old = 18) were studied. Experiment I: Videofluoroscopic swallow samples of two 10-second straw drinking trials were obtained. …

A Spatial Inquiry Of Infant Low Birthweight And Cancer Mortality In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Esra Ozdenerol

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Infant low birthweight rate in East Baton Rouge Parish is higher compared to the nation. Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in Louisiana. A few studies have indicated a relationship between the two health outcomes and their environment, but conclusions from these studies have not always been consistent. The spatial and temporal scales of the data and the methods used in these studies contribute to the inconsistent and uncertain results. The spatial patterns of infant low birthweight and cancer mortality in East Baton Rouge Parish from 1993 to 1996 and their relationships with environmental factors at three …

The communicative scores with challenges that were generated with three different assessment activities: a direct/participatory evaluation conducted by a certified speech-language pathologist, an interview of the caregivers, and an observation of daily routine activities. Results indicated that all of the rating procedures differentiated the three communication proficiency groups. Correlations between …

Intestinal Bioavailability And Biotransformation Of 3,4,3',4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl In The Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Adriana Maria Doi Jan 2000

Intestinal Bioavailability And Biotransformation Of 3,4,3',4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl In The Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Adriana Maria Doi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

These studies examined the role of micelle fatty acid composition, contaminant body burden, biotransformation, and non-specific toxicity on the systemic bioavailability of 3,4,3',4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) from the intestine of catfish, as well as the effect of TCB upon the vectorial transporter p-glycoprotein (pgp). Initial in vitro experiments demonstrated that the solubility of [14C]-TCB in micelles was favored by longer chain fatty acids, with higher [14C]-TCB solubility correlating to greater systemic bioavailability of [14C]-TCB in an in situ preparation. The systemic bioavailability of [14C]-TCB was demonstrated to be affected by in vivo exposures to TCB, in a dose-independent manner, and apparently unrelated …

Indices Of Exposure To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In A Bioindicator Species: Point Mutation Detection In The Cotton Rat., Christine H. Lemarchand-Carpentier Jan 2000

Indices Of Exposure To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In A Bioindicator Species: Point Mutation Detection In The Cotton Rat., Christine H. Lemarchand-Carpentier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Release of energy-related contaminants occurs ubiquitously in the environment. Cancer induction by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aromatic amines have been well recognized in the workplace and are also suspected among the general population. Environmental PAHs exposure and effects have been investigated using biomarkers in aquatic and, to a lesser extent, terrestrial animals. Attempts to monitor the presence and effects of PAHs through the detection of point mutations in genes involved in carcinogenesis (p53 and K-ras) would yield interesting clues regarding possible etiologic agents and their potential effect. The identification of a mutation type, known to be G→T transversion predominantly …

The Effects And Mechanism Of Action Of Cimetidine On Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Using An Equine Soft-Tissue Inflammation Model., Robert Paul Hunter Jan 2000

The Effects And Mechanism Of Action Of Cimetidine On Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Using An Equine Soft-Tissue Inflammation Model., Robert Paul Hunter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cytochrome P-450 (CYP) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are similar heme containing enzymes. Cimetidine (CIM) is an H2 antagonist, and since CIM inhibits CYP, it may also bind to the heme-iron of NOS and reduce NO generation. Six horses each had three tissue chambers inserted subcutaneously on either side of the neck for Trial 1. Trial 2 also used 6 female Thoroughbred horses implanted with at least two tissue chambers as in Trial 1. Blood and tissue chamber fluid (TCF) were sampled at -24, 0, 4, 8, 12 h and at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days after …

Characterization Of The Microsomal Mixed -Function Oxidase System Of Several Species Of Sea Anemones (Phylum: Cnidaria)., Linda Marie Heffernan Jan 1999

Characterization Of The Microsomal Mixed -Function Oxidase System Of Several Species Of Sea Anemones (Phylum: Cnidaria)., Linda Marie Heffernan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Several studies have demonstrated detrimental effects of anthropogenic compounds on coral reef communities. These compounds are known to be bioaccumulated rapidly, but eliminated slowly by anthozoans (i.e., corals and sea anemones). The cytochrome P450-dependent mixed function oxidase (MFO) system is the primary pathway for initial oxidation of many hydrophobic exogenous compounds; however, its presence had not been well documented in anthozoans. The studies reported herein show that a functional cytochrome P450-dependent MFO is present in the microsomal fraction of the sea anemones Anthopleura xanthogrammica , A. elegantissima, and Bunodosoma cavernata . The evidence is based on the presence of classical …

Studies On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated Macrophages., Byeong Churl Jang Jan 1999

Studies On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated Macrophages., Byeong Churl Jang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cyclooxygenase (COX) is the key enzyme in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins (PGs) known as pro-inflammatory mediators. COX has two isoforms: the constitutively expressed COX-1 and the mitogen-inducible COX-2. It has been demonstrated that COX-2 expression is selectively induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment after several hours in rat alveolar macrophages (Lee et al., 1992; Chanmugam et al., 1995). The mitogen-activated protein kinases [MAPKs; extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), P38, and c-jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs)], nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), and Lyn kinase are known to be activated in the early stages (within minutes) of LPS signaling pathways. In the current study, the …

Risk Management Of Aflatoxin Through Mutagenic Potential Modification And Toxin Formation By Intrinsic Components In Food., Syed Shahid Ali

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aflatoxins are the secondary metabolites of Aspergillus flavus and their presence in food and feed crops is unavoidable. This study evaluates the antimutagenic properties of phytic and linoleic acids in aflatoxin-affected food. A reduction in the number of revertants was a function of an increased concentration of phytic/linoleic acids and phosphotidylinositol in the Salmonella/microsomal mutagenicity assay (tester strains TA-100 and TA-98) with and without metabolic activation (S-9). Linoleic acid (10 and 100 mug/plate) and phosphotidylinositol (25mug/plate) were antimutagenic against most of the mutagens tested. Although a reduction in the number of revertants was observed in the phytic acid treatments, the …

Effects Of Selected Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons On Cell Proliferation, Protein Phosphorylation, And Intracellular Calcium Concentration In Lepomis Macrochirus., Helen Runnels Connelly

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) have been demonstrated to affect signal transduction in higher vertebrates. In this research, the freshwater species of fish, Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill) was used to test the effects of a 14-day diet of PAH on lymphocyte signal transduction. PAH tested included: 2-aminoanthracene (2-AA), 2-methylnaphthalene (2-MN), 9,10-dimethylanthracene (9,10-DMA), and a mixture of these three compounds (MIX). Individual compounds were tested at a total PAH dose of 3.1 $\pm$ 0.01mg over the 14 day period. The MIX diet was a total PAH dose of 0.13 $\pm$ 0.01mg 2-AA, 0.19 + 0.01mg 9,10-DMA, and 0.22 $\pm$ 0.02mg 2-MN over the …

Evaluation Of The Toxicological Consequences Of Dietary Exposure To Individual Classes Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Or A Mixture In The Fischer-344 Rat., Mary Durand Boudreau Jan 1998

Evaluation Of The Toxicological Consequences Of Dietary Exposure To Individual Classes Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Or A Mixture In The Fischer-344 Rat., Mary Durand Boudreau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is special concern about the potential health effects of by-products released into the environment after combustion or conversion of fossil fuels. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), while initially released largely into the atmosphere, are subsequently deposited in soil and water and on foods. Although the significance of PAH contamination with regard to environmentally caused diseases and cancer in humans is difficult to estimate, it is suggested that the potential hazards may be underestimated. In an effort to understand the potential adverse health effects of PAHs, a comprehensive study was undertaken to determine the metabolic fate of selected PAHs as individual …

The Effect Of Pulmonary Infection (Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae), Endotoxin And Dexamethasone On Enrofloxacin Pharmacokinetic Parameters In Swine., Lynn O. Post Jan 1998

The Effect Of Pulmonary Infection (Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae), Endotoxin And Dexamethasone On Enrofloxacin Pharmacokinetic Parameters In Swine., Lynn O. Post

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Efficacy studies are often done on diseased animals while pharmacokinetic studies are done on healthy animals. Disease models are inherently difficult to standardize because of the many variables associated with measuring pharmacokinetic parameters in abnormal animals. Information derived from pharmacokinetic studies with diseased animals could be useful to determine if therapeutic doses of a drug or antimicrobial becomes less effective or toxic due to changes in distribution and clearance. The objectives of this study were to: characterize a pulmonary infection model in swine using Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae; evaluate the pharmacokinetic changes associated with the pulmonary infection model and dexamethasone after the …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study associated climatic and environmental factors with the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (calazar) in Northeast Brazil. Remote sensing (RS) techniques permitted evaluation of spatial and temporal landscape features to stratify the region and define the target population for this vector-borne disease. The Municipality of Caninde, Ceara, Brazil was divided into 873-- 2 x 2 km2 squares centered on coordinates from a Universal Transverse Mercator projection (scale 1:100,000, 1994) and geo-referenced with 2 Landsat T.M. (TM) scenes (September 26, 1976 and July 2, 1996). The assignment of squares into foothills, plains or city strata was based on vegetative categories determined …

Perception-Action Coupling During Goal-Directed Locomotion Without Vision., Robert D. Clark Jan 1998

Perception-Action Coupling During Goal-Directed Locomotion Without Vision., Robert D. Clark

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability to walk to distant targets accurately without the use of vision has been demonstrated in a number of studies (e.g., Elliott, 1987; 1990; Loomis, Da Silva, Philbeck, & Fukusima, 1996; Rieser, Ashmead, Talor, & Youngquist, 1990; Steenhuis & Goodale 1988; Thomson, 1983). Processes underlying the mechanisms involved in this ability however, are not completely understood. One possible mechanism examined involves non-visual sensory flows during locomotion. In Experiment 1, manipulations to normal walking led to significant increases in error relative to the control group. Error expressed as a percentage of target distance revealed that target distance did not affect …

Beta-Carotene And Exercise Performance: Effects On Race Performance, Oxidative Stress, And Maximal Oxygen Consumption., Kim Edward Leblanc Jan 1998

Beta-Carotene And Exercise Performance: Effects On Race Performance, Oxidative Stress, And Maximal Oxygen Consumption., Kim Edward Leblanc

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is evidence in the literature that suggests a possible worthwhile role of antioxidants during athletic endeavors and exercise performance. Several studies have evaluated the antioxidant ability of beta-carotene and demonstrated a beneficial influence. However, these studies have investigated beta-carotene's effects within an antioxidant mixture which included other antioxidant vitamins. Consequently, this study attempted to isolate the antioxidant role of beta-carotene during exercise. Three parameters of beta-carotene influence were measured using eleven well-trained runners: serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (a marker of free radical generation), 5000 meter race performance, and maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). Subjects were tested using a double-blinded cross-over …

The Effects Of Hypoestrogenism On Rest And Acute Submaximal Exercise Metabolism Using A Gnrh Agonist Analogue Model., Sheri Anne Melton Jan 1997

The Effects Of Hypoestrogenism On Rest And Acute Submaximal Exercise Metabolism Using A Gnrh Agonist Analogue Model., Sheri Anne Melton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During menopause, many women experience weight gain which is mostly in the form of abdominal and upper body fat deposition. This phenomenon has been recognized as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease in females. Other disease processes, such as diabetes, hypertension and some cancers, specifically, breast and esophageal have been linked to obesity. Thus, the occurrence of increased body fat is placing the postmenopausal female in jeopardy of a potential life-threatening position. The connection between the lack of estrogen seen in menopause and weight gain remains unclear, but studies have shown that estrogen status may affect carbohydrate and fat metabolism. …

Inflammatory Responses Of The Jird To Brugia Pahangi: Parasite Stage Specificity And Role Of The Macrophage., Carmen Nasarre

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The host systemic and peritoneal inflammatory responses against different stages of Brugia pahangi were compared in intraperitoneally infected-jirds. Systemic inflammatory responses were assessed by measuring the pulmonary granulomatous response to B. pahangi antigen-coated beads (PGRN). Peritoneal inflammation was characterized by enumeration of different cell types in peritoneal exudates following infection. Further, the toxoplasmacidal activity and TNF-$\alpha$-like production of peritoneal macrophages were also characterized. Infection with L3, L4, male worms, female worms, microfilariae (MF) or dead adult worms induced a rapid PGRN. This response decreased to levels of controls in jirds inoculated with living parasites at the chronic time period, indicating …

Conditioning The Auditory System With Continuous Versus Interrupted Noise Of Equal Acoustic Energy: Is Either Exposure More Protective?, Ruth Ann Skellett Jan 1996

Conditioning The Auditory System With Continuous Versus Interrupted Noise Of Equal Acoustic Energy: Is Either Exposure More Protective?, Ruth Ann Skellett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Prior exposure to moderate-level acoustic stimulation (conditioning) can reduce and/or prevent the deleterious effects of subsequent higher level exposures (Canlon et al., 1988; Campo et al., 1991). Both continuous and interrupted schedules of moderate-level noise have been used as conditioning exposures, and both schedules have been effective in providing protection against subsequent noise trauma. However, there is evidence to suggest that continuous noise exposures are more damaging to the cochlea than interrupted exposures of equal acoustic energy (Bohne et al., 1985, 1987), and moderate-level continuous and interrupted noise exposures differ in the pattern of auditory sensitivity change that they produce …
