Use Of A Segmented Electrode To Control Current Distribution In Electrochemical Systems, Barry Van Tassell Jan 2010

Use Of A Segmented Electrode To Control Current Distribution In Electrochemical Systems, Barry Van Tassell

Dissertations and Theses

"The goal of this project was to investigate the use of segmented electrodes to control the current distribution through an electrochemical cell. To achieve this goal, the project was separated into two parts, designing a scalable piece of hardware that could create a current distribution, and then using that hardware to create noticeable changes in a system by changing the current distribution within the system. Prior to building the current distribution device, a basic 3-electrode galvanostat was built in order to test its fundamental design characteristics. The design stressed a simplistic hardware, relying on software to control the current. A …

The Effect Of The Study Region On Gis Models Of Species Geographic Distributions And Estimates Of Niche Evolution; Preliminary Tests With Montane Rodents (Genus Nephelomys) In Venezuela, Ali Raza

Dissertations and Theses

Various niche-based techniques exist to model a species' potential geographic distribution in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) framework. These models compare the environmental conditions of localities of a species' occurrence versus those of the overall study region. In addition to uses in areas such as macroecology and conservation biology, this approach has been applied recently to studies of niche evolution and historical biogeography. Definition of the study region is critical for all of these applications but has not been addressed previously. Here, I examine the effect of changes in the extent of the study region on potential distribution models of …

The Critical Reception Of Richard Wagner's Tristan Und Isolde In The English-Speaking World, Thomas Rizzuto Jan 2010

The Critical Reception Of Richard Wagner's Tristan Und Isolde In The English-Speaking World, Thomas Rizzuto

Dissertations and Theses

Few operas have sparked as much controversy, in as many places, as Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. History shows that during the latter half of the 19th century spirited discussion and outright debate follwed the work to every new city that dared to produce it. This paper will focus on the critical reception of the Wagner's historic music drama in two such cities: London and New York. By examining newspaper reviews, journal articles, and other musical writings of the time, we will develop an understanding of the divergent reactions to each premiere. We will examine the cultural and musical factors …

Qualitative And Quantitative X-Ray Diffraction Analysis For Forensic Examination Of Duct Tapes, Rebecca E. Bucht Jan 2010

Qualitative And Quantitative X-Ray Diffraction Analysis For Forensic Examination Of Duct Tapes, Rebecca E. Bucht

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Duct tapes are an increasingly important class of forensic evidence. This research has studied the value of using x-ray diffraction (XRD) to extend the ability of evidence examiners to gain additional information about a duct tape specimen.

Duct tapes are composed of five different layers. Starting from the non-adhesive side, these layers are the release coating, backing, scrim, primer and adhesive. The release coating assists in reducing unwind tension and preventing the tape from sticking to itself when on a roll. The backing layer serves as a support for the adhesive, and is usually based on polyethylene. The scrim is …

Estandarizacion Linguistica Y Construccion Nacional: La Norma Espanola Y La Norma Americana (1823-1857), Laura Villa

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation analyzes five salient moments in the history of the standardization of the Spanish language that took place in the central decades of the nineteenth century: first, the reformed spelling system proposed in London by Andrés Bello and Juan García del Río in 1823 in order to promote Latin American literacy; second, the simultaneous officialization in 1844 of two different orthographic norms in Chile and Spain, both of them surrounded by intense ideological debates, the former led by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the latter by a teachers' association established in Madrid; third, the publication in 1847 of Bello's grammar, which …

Selective Adsorption Of Dibenzothiophenes On Activated Carbons With Metal Species Deposited On Their Surfaces, Jakub Lison

Dissertations and Theses

"The objective of this thesis is an investigation of influence of porosity, surface chemistry, material composition and effects of metals oncarbon adsorbents in desulfurization of liquid fuels. Materials are derived from poly (4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) salts (sodium or transition metals). They are investigated in a dynamic breakthrough process using model diesel fuel containing dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4, 6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (DMDBT). The performance of adsorbents is evaluated in terms of the capacity and selectivity. Differences in performance are investigated considering the porosity, surface chemistry and the type of material used."

Synesthetic Landscapes In Harold Pinter’S Theatre: A Symbolist Legacy, Graça Corrêa Jan 2010

Synesthetic Landscapes In Harold Pinter’S Theatre: A Symbolist Legacy, Graça Corrêa

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the light of recent interdisciplinary critical approaches to landscape and space, and adopting phenomenological methods of sensory analysis, this dissertation explores interconnected or synesthetic sensory "scapes" in contemporary British playwright Harold Pinter's theatre. By studying its dramatic landscapes and probing into their multi-sensory manifestations in line with Symbolist theory and aesthetics, I argue that Pinter's theatre articulates an ecocritical stance and a micropolitical critique.

Chapter One explains the dissertation's theoretical framework (landscape theory, Symbolist theory, ecocriticism, phenomenology, and sensory analysis), while arguing for an ecophilosophical reading of Pinter's landscapes that engages not only with spatial patterns but …

Discrimination Of Tone Contrasts In Mandarin Disyllables By Naïve American English Listeners, Shari Salzhauer Berkowitz Jan 2010

Discrimination Of Tone Contrasts In Mandarin Disyllables By Naïve American English Listeners, Shari Salzhauer Berkowitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The present study examined the perception of Mandarin disyllabic tones by inexperienced American English speakers. Participants heard two naturally-produced Mandarin disyllables, and indicated if the two were the same or different. A small native Mandarin-speaking control group participated as well. All 21 possible Mandarin contrasts where the initial syllable varied but the final syllable stayed the same were tested. Acoustic analysis was performed on the stimuli under study. Mandarin subjects scored at ceiling on all contrasts. American English subjects performed poorly on contrasts where the difference in mean F0 was small, or where the difference in the offset F0 of …

Moderator Effects Of Working Memory On Symptom Stability In Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder By Dopamine D1 And D2 Receptor Polymorphisms During Development, Joey W. Trampush Jan 2010

Moderator Effects Of Working Memory On Symptom Stability In Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder By Dopamine D1 And D2 Receptor Polymorphisms During Development, Joey W. Trampush

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Background: Developmental changes in dopaminergic pathways in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) that are important for working memory have been hypothesized to play a central role in the trajectory of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but not the initial onset of the disorder. This dissertation research examines whether dopamine receptor D1 (DRD1) and dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) gene polymorphisms moderate the association between improvements in working memory and declines in attention problems in ADHD from childhood to adolescence/young adulthood. Methods: Participants were 76 racially/ethnically diverse youth diagnosed with ADHD in childhood and followed prospectively for almost 10 years. Stability of ADHD symptomatology …

Colombian Artists In Paris, 1865-1905, Maya Jiménez Jan 2010

Colombian Artists In Paris, 1865-1905, Maya Jiménez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation brings together a group of artists not previously studied collectively, within the broader context of both Colombian and Latin American artists in Paris. Taking into account their conditions of travel, as well as the precarious political and economic situation of Colombia at the turn of the twentieth century, this investigation exposes the ways in which government, politics and religion influenced the stylistic and thematic choices made by these artists abroad. For those who were pensioned artists and who were restricted by a defined political agenda, their artistic experimentation was limited, while the more radical artists were typically wealthy …

The Impact Of Mood Disorders On Cognitive Function In Post-Menopausal Women Undergoing Treatment For Early-Stage Breast Cancer, Margery E. Frosch Jan 2010

The Impact Of Mood Disorders On Cognitive Function In Post-Menopausal Women Undergoing Treatment For Early-Stage Breast Cancer, Margery E. Frosch

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

PURPOSE: Many post-menopausal women who are treated for early-stage breast cancer report experiencing cognitive difficulties following adjuvant chemotherapy. However, the generalizability of the results of a number of studies that have attempted to document the association between adjuvant chemotherapy and cognitive dysfunction has been limited due to inconsistencies in the investigative methods used, thus introducing the possibility that other factors are contributing to reports of cognitive problems. The current study examines the possibility that a history of mood disorders in post-menopausal breast cancer patients predisposes them to cognitive difficulties following adjuvant treatment. METHODS: Sixty-five postmenopausal women with non-metastatic breast cancer …

Evaluating The Deterrent Effect Of Capital Punishment On Crime, Permiterio Leocadio Jan 2010

Evaluating The Deterrent Effect Of Capital Punishment On Crime, Permiterio Leocadio

Dissertations and Theses

Many researchers, academics or philosophers see capital punishment as a deterrent to crime. Several states in the United States apply the death penalty to try to reduce crime. Other states do not agree with the application of this repressive law arguing that a crime should not be solved with another crime. From a theoretical view, the principal point of analysis about capital punishment in this present work is to state that capital punishment can reduce crime. Here also it will be examined some of the collateral consequences of the application of capital punishment, and its implications for the Criminal Justice …

The Impact Of Microclimate On Branch Colonization By Neotropical Cerambycid Beetles, Christina Lee Jan 2010

The Impact Of Microclimate On Branch Colonization By Neotropical Cerambycid Beetles, Christina Lee

Dissertations and Theses

"Vertical stratification contributes to the great diversity of insects found in tropical rainforests. Due to differences in both biotic and abiotic factors, different strata of the forest provide different habitats for insects. A previous study in French Guiana revealed that wood-boring cerambycid beetles preferentially colonized branches at ground level in the dry season, but shifted to canopy level in the rainy season. The current beetle-rearing study was conducted to confirm the occurrence of this seasonal shift, explore possible causes, and to determine if similar microclimate conditions occurred at ground level in the dry season and the canopy level in the …

Role Of Drosophila Rap/Fzr (Cdh1) In Retinal Axon Targeting And Its Interactions With Loco, Liprin-A And Ras, Marta Gronska Jan 2010

Role Of Drosophila Rap/Fzr (Cdh1) In Retinal Axon Targeting And Its Interactions With Loco, Liprin-A And Ras, Marta Gronska

Dissertations and Theses

The development of the wild type Drosophila compound eye involves stereotypical targeting of photoreceptor axons to the specific layers of the optic ganglion, medulla and lamina, in the third instar larvae. To test the hypothesis that ubiquitin ligases play an important role during retinal axon targeting we have examined the patterns of axon targeting in the developing eye of the retina aberrant in pattern (rap/fzr) mutants. Rap/Fzr is a homolog of mammalian Cdh1, an activator of anaphase promoting complex (APC), an E3 ubiquitin ligase. Previous work has shown that Rap/Fzr is required in cell cycle regulation, glia differentiation and pattern …

Acceleration Of Monte Carlo Value At Risk Estimation Using Graphics Processing Unit (Gpu), Wei Wu Jan 2010

Acceleration Of Monte Carlo Value At Risk Estimation Using Graphics Processing Unit (Gpu), Wei Wu

Dissertations and Theses

"Value at Risk (VaR) is one of the most popular tools used to estimate the exposure to market risks, and it measures the worst expected loss at a given confidence level. Monte Carlo simulation is one of the best methods to calculate VaR and it is widely used in financial industry. Unfortunately, it is time consuming especially when the simulated samples and the number of assets in a portfolio are very large. The graphics processing unit (GPU) is a specialized multiprocessor which has highly parallel structure supporting more effective than general-purpose CPUs for a range of complex algorithms. In this …
