First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place Dec 1972

First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

NASA satellite OSO-6 carried as part of its payload a proton recoil telescope capable of detecting neutrons between 40 and 200 MeV with directional discrimination. Sixteen months of data from this instrument were analyzed with a view to determining properties of the earth albedo neutron flux above the atmosphere.

The variation of albedo neutron flux with geomagnetic latitude was found to be 1:4 between 0° and 40°. The angular distribution shows that about 40% fewer neutrons come upward from directly beneath the satellite compared to the number coming from a direction tangential to the top of the atmosphere. These results …

The Dacites Of The Washakie Needles, Bunsen Peak, And The Birch Hills, Wyoming, And Their Relationship To The Absaroka-Gallatin Volcanic Province, Linda Lou Anderson Love

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

ABSTRACT

TI1e Washakie Needles, Bunsen Peak, and Birch Hills dacites are three of many plugs which intrude the Eocene flows and volcaniclastic rocks of the Absaroka-Gallatin volcanic province. The dacites contain phenocrysts of plagioclase (oligoclase to andesine), biotite, and resorbed quartz. The dacites of the Washakie Needles and Bunsen Peak also contain phenocrysts of hornblende. The rocks of Bunsen Peak and the Birch Hills have two feldspar phases (oligoclase to andesine and sanidine) and quartz in the groundmass. The Washakie Needles dacite groundmass is composed of one feldspar (andesine to anorthoclase) and quartz. The fission track ages of the dacites …

Acidities In Ethanol/Water Solvents; The Pka Of Hf., Raymond M. Merrill Dec 1972

Acidities In Ethanol/Water Solvents; The Pka Of Hf., Raymond M. Merrill

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The acidity of hydrofluoric acid in mixed ethanol/ water solvent systems was studied by determining the pKa of HF in a number of different ethanol concentrations. The effect of changing temperature on the acidity of HF in these media was also examined.

The pKa's were determined using a lanthanum fluoride membrane Fluoride Specific Ion Electrode and a glass pH electrode versus the same reference electrode. The method eliminates the need to determine liquid junction potentials. By determining the pKa for HF in each ethanol/water mixture, at a number of different temperatures, thermodynamic parameters, such as free energy, enthalpy, entropy, and …

Gravity Survey Of The Mogolion Plateau Volcanic Province, Southwestern New Mexico., Douglas Hugh Krohn

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A regional gravity survey has been conducted over the Mogollon Plateau, a mid-Tertiary volcano-tectonic complex 125 km in diameter located in southwestern New Mexico. The complete Bouguer gravity map (3 milligal contour interval) shows gravity values ranging form -167 milligals over an outcrop of Precambrian rocks near Silver City, on the southern rim of the Plateau to -251 milligals over an alluvium filled graben east of Reserve, in the northwestern part of the Plateau giving a maximum relief of 84 milligals. Gravity data show that in general the Mogollon Plateau is an area of low density rocks: gravity values within …

The Structural And Metamorphic History Of The Oakhurst Roof Pendant, Mariposa And Madera Counties, California, Lee R. Russell Dec 1972

The Structural And Metamorphic History Of The Oakhurst Roof Pendant, Mariposa And Madera Counties, California, Lee R. Russell

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Oakhurst roof pendant, near Oakhurst, California, consists of three pre-Cretaceous clastic metasedimentary rock units, surrounded and intruded by rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith. Two zones of probable "sheared granitic" and "ultramafic" rocks trend northwesterly and are approximately aligned with the Foothills fault system farther north.

The dominant mesocopic feature of the pendant is a northwesterly striking foliation which forms a downward converging fan. Earlier-formed hornblende lineations have been transposed into this foliation plane, as shown by Schmidt-net projections.

Rocks comprising the three unites show three textural stages:

1) Early amphiboles and diopside overgrown by later static amphibole pophyroblasts. …

Linear Estimation: The Kalman-Bucy Filter, William Douglas Schindel Oct 1972

Linear Estimation: The Kalman-Bucy Filter, William Douglas Schindel

Graduate Theses - Mathematics

The problem of linear dynamic estimation, its solution as developed by Kalman and Bucy, and interpretations, properties and illustrations of that solution are discussed. The central problem considered is the estimation of the system state vector X, describing a linear dynamic system governed by

dx/dt = F(t)X(t) + G(t)U(t)

Y(t) = H(t)X(t) + V(t)

for observations of Y (system output), where V is a random observation-corrupting process, and U is a random system driving process.

An extension of the Kalman-Bucy filter to estimation in the absence of priori knowledge of the random process U and V is developed and illustrated.

Morphologic Time Series From A Submarine Sand Ridge On The South Virginia Coast, John F. Mchone Jr. Oct 1972

Morphologic Time Series From A Submarine Sand Ridge On The South Virginia Coast, John F. Mchone Jr.

OES Theses and Dissertations

Submarine sand ridges several km long locally merge southward into the U. S. Atlantic coastline. Shallow (< 8m) observations of -such a ridge at False Cape, Virginia, favor a modern hydraulic origin. Time series maps show the ridge to be paralleled by a landward trough of approximately equal volume. Ridge flanks are usually steeper on the trough side.

Northeasterly winds and waves generate a coast-parallel current which funnels southward into the trough scouring it out and providing sediments for ridge aggradation. The current may be organized as a helical flow cell or cells. Bottom currents converge southward along the ridge crest causing landward transport of traction load along the crest. The trough current eventually breaches the confining ridge at the head of the trough, cutting saddles with steeper seaward slopes and producing outlying sediment fans.

The ridge and trough rest obliquely …

Magnetic Nonequivalence In Higher Alkyl Groups, Philip Anthony Reitano Sep 1972

Magnetic Nonequivalence In Higher Alkyl Groups, Philip Anthony Reitano

Masters Theses

The phenomenon of magnetic nonequivalence has been growing in recent years. Unequal populations of the various conformers in such molecules are normally accepted as the cause of nonequivalence, but nuclei which are stereochemically nonequivalent are not necessarily magnetically nonequivalent. This nonequivalence has been demonstrated for molecules of the type ABDC8CHR1R2, where R + H, F, and Me. Although in principle the effect is quite general this has not been previously observed in "freely rotating" systems for groups larger than methyl. The role of steric factors, the size of the substituents and the distances between …

Lasing Conditions Of Elemental Sulfur In A Gas Discharge, David E. Egbert Sep 1972

Lasing Conditions Of Elemental Sulfur In A Gas Discharge, David E. Egbert

Theses and Dissertations

The partial pressures from heated sulfur crystals and helium, and sulfur and nitrogen required for ionic sulfur laser action in a gas discharge were determined. Previous work with sulfur lasers is reviewed and population inversion mechanisms are presented for the ionic sulfur laser lines. Possible excitation mechanisms are presented for both electron and ion or atomic collision excitation. Transition diagrams for all the known ionic sulfur laser transitions and an approximate potential energy curve for the diatomic sulfur molecule are presented. Laser action was achieved only when a spark gap pulser was used with a laser tube especially designed to …

Health Status Of Emergency Department Patients, Marjean J. Horning

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to help nursing develop a comprehensive care system for patients in selected emergency departments. To develop such a system, it was necessary to know the characteristics of and the health needs of that population.

The problem of this study was to describe the characteristics and health needs of patients in selected emergency departments.

Patients were interviewed using the Kisch Health Status Proxy (KHSP) and the Health Habits Inventory (HHI) as a guide. The KHSP listed acute and chronic conditions that an individual experienced. It gave a numerical score which rated the respondent in good, …

Measurements Of The Mössbauer Fraction In Chromium, B. Frederick Brace Jr. Aug 1972

Measurements Of The Mössbauer Fraction In Chromium, B. Frederick Brace Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

Precision measurements of the Mossbauer fraction of Fe57 in chromium were made using the black absorber technique over a range of temperatures from 78K to 792K. Because of uncertainty in corrections at high temperatures, only the data collected from 78K to 600K was used in analyzing the results.

The f values were analyzed in terms of a Debye approximmation. This analysis of the data yielded a theoretical fit which was based on two adjustable parameters (a Debye temperature of 438K and an anharmonicity parameter of 2 x 10-4K-1).

The f measurements were also analyzed using a …

Mössbauer Studies Of Electrostatic Hyperfine Interactions In 238U, 236U, And 234U, Joyce Anne Monard

Doctoral Dissertations

The nuclear gamma resonance (NGR) for 238U, 236U, and 234U in the compound (UO2) Rb (NO3)3 has been established at 4.2°K following the alpha decay of PuO2 sources. The ratios of the electric quadrupole moments of these isotopes have been determined and the electric field gradient at the uranium site has been calculated from the data. The isomer shift in 234U has been measured for both PuO2 and PuA14 sources and the change in nuclear radius between the excited and the ground state has been calculated.

Principles Of Control Theory As Applied To A Thermostat, Joseph Peter Stidham Aug 1972

Principles Of Control Theory As Applied To A Thermostat, Joseph Peter Stidham

Master's Theses

The recent development of solid state electronics has opened new possibilities in instrumentation design. One development has been the availability of compact, low cost, high gain, D. C. amplifiers which can be used in the design and construction of sensitive laboratory instruments (11). Using these amplifiers a thermostat capable of precise control can be constructed and its performance compared with the performance expected by an analysis of the closed loop control equations.

The Dimetalation And Subsequent Functionalization Of 1,3-Dimethylnaphthalene By Means Of Amylsodium In The Presence Of Certain Tertiary Amines, Atilla Tuncay

Masters Theses

I. Introduction

It is well known that the hydrogen atoms of a methyl group directly attached to an aromatic system are sufficiently acidic to be abstracted by suitable bases to generate the corresponding α-anion.1,2 These monoanions have frequently served as suitable intermediates for the formation of a large variety of a-condensation products in good to excellent yields2 On the other hand, attempts to obtain α,α-dianions from various dimethylaromatic systems have met with limited success.2 Due to the lack of sufficiently strong bases, dimetalation products were obtained only in poor yields even at high temperatures and prolonged reaction …
