Good Grapes - Good Wine., Meilin Chung Curtis
Good Grapes - Good Wine., Meilin Chung Curtis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Good grapes are required to make good wine. Quality wines start in quality vineyards. Vineyard design, installation, and operation, including site location, trellis options, vine selection, and canopy management, along with when to harvest are discussed. While winemaking is the final phase in the pursuit of the winemaker's passion, it is but a simple formula. The beginning of a good wine is in a good vineyard. This study includes a financial projection for a 10-acre vineyard as well as for starting an onsite, complementary sized winery. Even though many small-to-medium vineyards-to-wineries have started over the last decade, the reason to …
Integrated Conflict Management Systems As Cure And Cause: How Leaders Address Cultural Change And Conflict In Their Organizations, Brian S. Beck
Integrated Conflict Management Systems As Cure And Cause: How Leaders Address Cultural Change And Conflict In Their Organizations, Brian S. Beck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Organizations experience the bottom line impact of internal conflicts daily. Conflicts between employees simply drain organizational resources. The idea of Integrated Conflict Management Systems (ICMS) has been introduced to help minimize the impact of these conflicts. ICMS, through the development of policies and procedures to address conflicts, are actually attempting to change the organization's culture, and when organizations attempt cultural changes, conflicts are likely to occur. The primary component of cultural change is the organizational leader.
The study interviews organizational leaders about the conflicts that occur when organizations change cultures and the methods that leaders use to work through those …
Competitive Actions Of New Technology Firms The Red Queen Effect And New Firm Performance, Robert L. Porter
Competitive Actions Of New Technology Firms The Red Queen Effect And New Firm Performance, Robert L. Porter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The competitive strategy used by a new firm may be the most important strategy it ever employs (Covin & Slevin, 1989; Ferrier, 2001). A well-chosen and executed firm strategy is essential for a firm to realize its potential competitive advantage (Porter, 1981). A firm‘s strategic intent and resulting competitive actions are especially important when firms are new and vulnerable as they strive to learn which strategic actions help them adapt to their rivals actions and to their environment (Stinchcombe, 1965). Further, the competitive actions that new firms choose to take with rival firms affects the overall competitive dynamics of their …
Essays On Corporate Governance, Tih Koon Tan
Essays On Corporate Governance, Tih Koon Tan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is composed by two essays that explore corporate governance issues in S&P firms. The first essay examines changes in corporate governance after a firm gets added to the S&P 500 index? Using firms added from 1994 to 2007, this paper examines how governance mechanisms change for these firms. Specifically, I look at both the overall governance and details on how each mechanism changes. I find that governance improves after being added to the index. Controlling for firm size, leverage, prior firm performance, and growth opportunities, the market reacts positively to governance improvements as a whole. In addition, changes …
Resource Accumulation Dynamics During The New Venture Formation Process, Amy Gresock
Resource Accumulation Dynamics During The New Venture Formation Process, Amy Gresock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As described by the resource-based view, resource accumulation is a key concern for new ventures. Although we know that getting the right resources is a critical issue to organizations, we know far less about how fledgling firms assemble these resources over time. The purpose of this study is to examine the dynamics of resource accumulation and their effect on performance and growth during new venture formation. In particular, I examine the constructs of financial capital, human capital, and performance, and will test relationships using a sample from the Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS) that provides the necessary data to test my …
Two Essays On Product Design And Consumer Evaluations, Sangwon Lee
Two Essays On Product Design And Consumer Evaluations, Sangwon Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper is about the central role of product design on consumer evaluations. While the design literature has articulated two different types of design, i.e. form-based design and function-based design (Khalid 2004), most extant marketing literature has mostly focused on the impact of functional design on performance (see Chitturi, Raghunathan, and Mahajan (2007) for a notable exception). In this paper, I examine the individual and joint effects of the two design dimensions: form design and functional design on consumer evaluations of new products. In the first essay, employing theoretical underpinnings from processing fluency theory, I investigate four major research questions. …
Three Studies Related To The Institutionalization Of International Financial Reporting Standards., Anna Alon
Three Studies Related To The Institutionalization Of International Financial Reporting Standards., Anna Alon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three separate, but related, studies on the institutionalization of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The first study examines the relationship between the national variables and the level of IFRS adoption. Theoretical insights regarding the level of national IFRS adoption come from the world-level institutional theory (Meyer et. al., 1997). Archival data are utilized for the study. The findings indicate that countries with weaker national governance structures and lower economic development demonstrate the highest level of commitment to IFRS. Nationalism was found to influence the extent of adoption. The study contributes to IFRS adoption literature by recognizing …
Two Essays On Bidding In Multi-Unit Common Value Auctions, Minjie Shao
Two Essays On Bidding In Multi-Unit Common Value Auctions, Minjie Shao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two essays on the topic of bidding in multi-unit common value auction. Essay one examines the role of capacity constraint on the auction results and bidding behavior. We consider a general case where bidders are unconstrained, and a second setting where bidders are capacity constrained. We document downward sloping demand curves for individual bidders. Bidders shade their bids by submitting quantity-price pairs and spreading their bids. The winner's curse is strong in the unconstrained treatment, but we find no evidence of the winner's curse when bidding constraints are imposed. Unconstrained bidders shade bids significantly more and …
Three Studies Investigating The Legal Liability Implications Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Jillian Phillips
Three Studies Investigating The Legal Liability Implications Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Jillian Phillips
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the litigation and legal liability exposure of auditors related to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). Three separate studies were conducted to examine how auditor's litigation exposure is evaluated by potential litigants (lawyers), and how auditor liability is evaluated by jurors, following the bankruptcy of a client. The first study examines whether the auditor's SOX Section 404 reporting decisions influence lawyers' assessments of their litigation exposure. The second study investigates whether voluntary disclosures of significant deficiencies in internal controls within the SOX Section 404 report, and the subjectivity of the internal control judgments made by the auditor, …
Trends In International Compulsory Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals Since The Institution Of The Trade-Related Aspects Of Intellectual Property Protection (Trips) Agreement, Reed F. Beall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement went into effect for World Trade Organization (WTO) members in 1995. The agreement defines minimum standards of patent protection that must eventually be observed by all signatories. TRIPS includes "compulsory licensing", a policy that allows for states under certain conditions to permit the use of a patented innovation without the consent of the patent holder. This paper considers instances of compulsory licenses (CLs) aimed to increase access to pharmaceuticals during urgent public health scenarios. The WTO maintains no registry of CLs; therefore, this research is an effort to catalog as many …
Tiered Market Structures: An Empirical Examination Of Nasdaq, Kevin D. Broom
Tiered Market Structures: An Empirical Examination Of Nasdaq, Kevin D. Broom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two essays examining tiered market structures. We focus on the June 2006 restructuring of the NASDAQ Stock Exchange where the listing environment changed from two to three tiers, creating a top tier with the highest listing standards for any exchange in the world. The first essay examines market quality. Theoretical motivation indicates that different listing and disclosure requirements could result in different levels of information production across tiers, and thus different market quality characteristics. While we do find cross-sectional evidence of market quality differences, we do not find evidence of market quality changes when firms change …
The Role And Effectiveness Of Proactive Behaviors As Coping Strategies In The Stress Process, Laura Anne Williams
The Role And Effectiveness Of Proactive Behaviors As Coping Strategies In The Stress Process, Laura Anne Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within the organizational sciences, researchers have examined the stress process in an effort to identify the antecedents and consequences of strain as well as moderating variables which exacerbate or ameliorate the negative effects of strain on individuals and organizations. Limited research has considered the role proactive behaviors may play as neutralizers of the negative consequences of stress. In this study, I seek to expand our knowledge of the role and effectiveness of proactive behaviors within the stress process. Using a job crafting framework, three categories of proactive behaviors (task-oriented, cognitive-oriented, and relationship-oriented) will be examined and are hypothesized to be …

The Economic Impact Of The Gulf Opportunity Zone Act Of 2005, Randall B. Bunker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The economic impact of the gulf opportunity zone act of 2005 politicians utilize tax policy investment incentives to foster economic growth and stimulate investment. On December 21, 2005, president bush signed the gulf opportunity zone act of 2005, otherwise known as the go zone act. The go zone act provided tax incentives to stimulate economic growth and assist in the recovery and rebuilding efforts. This research evaluates the economic impact of tax policy investment incentives provided by the go zone act of 2005. Congress continues to use tax incentives to stimulate economic growth even though empirical research on the impact …
A Method For Developing Churchmanian Knowledge Management Systems, Lars Linden
A Method For Developing Churchmanian Knowledge Management Systems, Lars Linden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Some problems confronted by managers include ill-formulated wicked planning problems, a type of problem that is difficult to solve because, in part, it is difficult to know what the problem is. The Churchmanian Knowledge Management Systems (CKMS) (Richardson & Courtney, 2004) is comprised of design principles for aiding system designers, managers, and clients who make decisions pertaining to these ill-formulated wicked planning problems. Problemography theory is proposed as a method for developing a CKMS. The method aims to measure CKMS development by using development tools that enables stakeholders and theoreticians to clarify CKMS development. A study was conducted to test …
The Accounting Profession Goes To War: Accounting Contributions To World War Ii, Mark Ernest Jobe
The Accounting Profession Goes To War: Accounting Contributions To World War Ii, Mark Ernest Jobe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
the World War II era ushered in a period of dynamic upheaval in American society. To safely navigate the stormy seas of commerce and governance, men of integrity, ability, and leadership were essential. Time and again, the nation turned to accountants to chart the proper course. And the accounting profession responded to the war and all its concomitant demands in a most splendid fashion. While the accounting profession was actively engaged in promoting the war effort, the war was exerting its own influences by shaping the duties, demands, and prestige of the accounting profession. The profession responded to the war …
How Business Climate And Political Climate Influence Economic Growth And Economic Development In The American States, James H. Black
How Business Climate And Political Climate Influence Economic Growth And Economic Development In The American States, James H. Black
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Economist Joseph Schumpeter’s examination into the relationships between business cycles and periods of economic expansion defines the government’s role in markets as limited. However, he viewed government intervention as a precursor to improving the levels of economic growth and expanding an individual’s quality of life. This study examines how measures of business and political climate might explain variations in the level of economic growth and development across the states. Economic growth is gauged from the microeconomic perspective of the individual (per capita income) and from the macroeconomic viewpoint of the state’s economy (gross state product). Economic development is defined by …
Exploring The Association Of The Attributes Of Self-Service Kiosks, Customer Check-In Satisfaction, And Customer Commitment In C, Gary Deel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research regarding self-service technology and its integration into the traditional service environment is relatively limited as it applies to the lodging industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the customer check-in satisfaction and customer commitment impacts of self-service hotel kiosks as implemented in convention hotels by examining perceptions of kiosk users. It has been theorized that customer perceptions of self-service technology attributes are positively related to satisfaction and subsequent commitment. A model was employed in this study that had been previously supported outside of the hospitality industry which demonstrated support for a universal standard of investigating self-service technology …
Cripping The Workspace: Performing Physically Disabled Professional Identity In Personal Narrative, Julie-Ann Scott
Cripping The Workspace: Performing Physically Disabled Professional Identity In Personal Narrative, Julie-Ann Scott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is a performance of identity analysis of 26 physically disabled professionals‘ open-ended personal narratives. Through adapting Riessman‘s five steps to narrative analysis to a performance methodology and applying Bamberg‘s narrative positioning, this study crystallizes the ongoing formation and re-formation of physically disabled professional identity in time, space, and discourse and the possibilities to reiterate, dismantle, and transform these meanings in future interactions. From a performance perspective, a story not only reflects reality, but is its own reality, constituting meaning and understanding in time and space. Physical disability is at once a personal experience and a shared cultural creation …
