Creating Capacity To Accommodate Additional Cardiac Catheterization Procedures, Kristin Anthony
Creating Capacity To Accommodate Additional Cardiac Catheterization Procedures, Kristin Anthony
Operations Transformation
Patient access to diagnostic outpatient (OP) cardiac catheterization is limited by a perceived lack of capacity. Outpatient cardiac cath pts flow through the ACU for pre/post procedure care. Current schedule limits pts that may be scheduled through the ACU to two OP procedures/day. Cardiologists request the ability to schedule beyond the two procedures/day allowed. Significant variation in pre/postoperative care orders exist amongst cardiologists resulting in variability in length of stay. Cardiac procedures are booked either as 60/90/120 minutes – Epic case averaging technology is not active in the cath lab. As a result, the case minutes in the cath lab …

Organizational Methods Of Reducing Burnout: The Impact Of Self-Rostering On Work-Life-Integration, Cory Authement
Organizational Methods Of Reducing Burnout: The Impact Of Self-Rostering On Work-Life-Integration, Cory Authement
MSN Capstone Projects
With burnout being at an all-time high, organizations must find new ways to prioritize staff wellbeing and promote work-life balance. According to the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) turnover in emergency departments ranges from 15-30% within the first year of nursing, and 43% within the first three years (Roncallo et al., 2020). These turnover rates cost a 300-bed facility approximately four million dollars in annual expenditure (Hesse, 2016). This level of loss and expenditure is unsustainable for the future of nursing and diverts resources away from our patients.
In recent studies, it was shown that burnout leads to difficulties for nurses …
Multitasking Scheduling With Shared Processing, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Multitasking Scheduling With Shared Processing, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recently, the problem of multitasking scheduling has raised a lot of interest in the service industries. Hall et al. (Discrete Applied Mathematics, 2016) proposed a shared processing multitasking scheduling model which allows a team to continue to work on the primary tasks while processing the routinely scheduled activities as they occur. With a team being modeled as a single machine, the processing sharing of the machine is achieved by allocating a fraction of the processing capacity to routine jobs and the remaining fraction, which we denote as sharing ratio, to the primary jobs. In this paper, we generalize this model …
Improving Opportunities For Students By Creating Pathways For Taking Art, Denise Hingst
Improving Opportunities For Students By Creating Pathways For Taking Art, Denise Hingst
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
According to research, art education has gone through a decline, causing a lack of opportunities for students to experience the development of creativity in the general classroom. These opportunities for students in the schools in this study become even harder at the secondary level. With these small schools, it falls on the leadership of the administration to solve the scheduling dilemma for all the students. A school improvement plan is put into place to help increase the pathways for taking art by extending the day at one of the schools and changing the schedules to better help both schools work …
Dynamic Scheduling With Uncertain Job Types, Zuo-Jun Max Shen, Jingui Xie, Zhichao Zheng, Han Zhou
Dynamic Scheduling With Uncertain Job Types, Zuo-Jun Max Shen, Jingui Xie, Zhichao Zheng, Han Zhou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Uncertain job types can arise as a result of predictive or diagnostic inaccuracy in healthcare or repair service systems and unknown preferences in matching service systems. In this paper, we study systems with multiple types of jobs, in which type information is imperfect and will be updated dynamically. Each job has a prior probability of belonging to a certain type which may be predicted by data, models, or experts. A job can only be processed by the right machine, and a job assigned to the wrong machine must be rescheduled. More information is learned from the mismatch, and job type …

Passenger satisfaction is extremely important for the success of a public transportation system. Many studies have shown that passenger satisfaction strongly depends on the time they have to wait at the bus stop (waiting time) to get on a bus. To be specific, user satisfaction drops faster as the waiting time increases. Therefore, service providers want to provide a bus to the waiting passengers within a threshold to keep them satisfied. It is a two-pronged problem: (a) to satisfy more passengers the transport planner may increase the frequency of the buses, and (b) in turn, the increased frequency may impact …

Streaming Approximation Scheme For Minimizing Total Completion Time On Parallel Machines Subject To Varying Processing Capacity, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
We study the problem of minimizing total completion time on parallel machines subject to varying processing capacity. In this paper, we develop an approximation scheme for the problem under the data stream model where the input data is massive and cannot fit into memory and thus can only be scanned a few times. Our algorithm can compute an approximate value of the optimal total completion time in one pass and output the schedule with the approximate value in two passes.

Rate-Monotonic Scheduler For Lora-Based Smart Space Monitoring System, Preti Kumari, Hari Prabhat Gupta, Sajal K. Das, Rahul Bansal
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Smart spaces system equipped with sensors to collect data that can be used to generate insights about its environmental conditions. Those collected data is then transmitted to the applications to enhance the comfort, quality of life, and security of the space. Long Range (LoRa) technology provides long distance coverage and consumes low energy which makes it suitable for smart space application. There are six virtual channels to transmit data in LoRa, however network faces the interference problem when nodes transmitted data at the same time. The interference problem makes LoRa less suitable for time-critical applications. To mitigate the interference problem, …
The Solution To Safe Patient Handoffs & Improved Patient Flow: Creation Of The Admission, Discharge, Transfer (Adt) Nurse, Kelsey Tavs
Nursing
Background: The 2021 Culture of Safety Survey demonstrated patient handoffs as the greatest opportunity for improvement; specifically, the transition between the Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient (IP) units. Barriers to safe handoff included workflow between theunits, nonadherence to bedside report and lack of telemetry boxes in the ED, delaying patient transfer, and creating increased risk for patient safety.
Local Problem: June 2021 data
- Three ED patient elopements, two left against medical advice, 15 left without being seen after triage, and three left without being seen prior to triage.
- Average disposition to admit time of 112 minutes (goal < 39 minutes)

The Investment Chapter In The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership: Enhanced Rules Without Enforcement Mechanism, Henry S. Gao
The Investment Chapter In The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership: Enhanced Rules Without Enforcement Mechanism, Henry S. Gao
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This Chapter examines the legal rules in the investment chapter in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). It starts with an overview and summary of the main provisions in the chapter, followed by an assessment of the rules by comparing established free trade agreements (FTAs), especially the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership. In particular, it notes that the chapter, whilst largely following the established approaches to investment in other FTAs, also includes important twists to the common rules to favour the host states. The last part discusses the conspicuous absence of an investor-state dispute settlement mechanism, its pros and cons, …

Reinforcement Learning Approach To Solve Dynamic Bi-Objective Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Problem, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau, Jonathan Pan
Reinforcement Learning Approach To Solve Dynamic Bi-Objective Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Problem, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau, Jonathan Pan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Police patrol aims to fulfill two main objectives namely to project presence and to respond to incidents in a timely manner. Incidents happen dynamically and can disrupt the initially-planned patrol schedules. The key decisions to be made will be which patrol agent to be dispatched to respond to an incident and subsequently how to adapt the patrol schedules in response to such dynamically-occurring incidents whilst still fulfilling both objectives; which sometimes can be conflicting. In this paper, we define this real-world problem as a Dynamic Bi-Objective Police Patrol Dispatching and Rescheduling Problem and propose a solution approach that combines Deep …

Hybrid Tabu Search Algorithm For Unrelated Parallel Machine Scheduling In Semiconductor Fabs With Setup Times, Job Release, And Expired Times, Changyu Chen, Madhi Fathi, Marzieh Khakifirooz, Kan Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This research is motivated by a scheduling problem arising in the ion implantation process of wafer fabrication. The ion implementation scheduling problem is modeled as an unrelated parallel machine scheduling (UPMS) problem with sequence-dependent setup times that are subject to job release time and expiration time of allowing a job to be processed on a specific machine, defined as: R|rj,eij,STsd|Cmax. The objective is first to maximize the number of processed jobs, then minimize the maximum completion time (makespan), and finally minimize the maximum completion times of the non-bottleneck machines. A mixed-integer programming (MIP) model is proposed as a solution approach …

Today, planning and scheduling problems are the most significant issues in the world and make a great impact on improving organizational productivity and serving systems such as medical and healthcare providers. Since operating room planning is a major problem in healthcare organizations, the optimization of medical staff and equipment plays an essential role. Thus, this study presents a multi-objective mathematical model with a new categorization (preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative) to minimize operating room scheduling and the risk of using equipment. Time constraints in healthcare systems and medical equipment limited capacity are the most significant considered limitation in the present study. …

Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work
In this paper, we study the scheduling problem for a customized production system consisting of a flow shop production line with a parallel assembly stage that produces various products in two stages. In the first stage of the production line, parts are produced using a flow shop production line, and in the second stage, products are assembled on one of the parallel assembly lines. The objective is to minimize the time required to complete all goods (makespan) using efficient scheduling. A mathematical model is developed; however, the model is NP-hard and cannot be solved in a reasonable amount of time. …

Assessing The Impact Of The Lead/Lag Times On The Project Duration Estimates In Highway Construction, Mohamed Abdel-Raheem, Jennifer Reyes, Xiaohui Wang, Grecia Silva Sanchez
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The literature mentions multiple factors that can affect the accuracy of estimating the project duration in highway construction, such as weather, location, and soil conditions. However, there are other factors that have not been explored, yet they can have significant impact on the accuracy of the project time estimate. Recently, TxDOT raised a concern regarding the importance of the proper estimating of the lead/lag times in project schedules. These lead/lag times are often determined based on the engineer’s experience. However, inaccurate estimates of the lead/lag time can result in unrealistic project durations. In order to investigate this claim, the study …

A Matheuristic Algorithm For The Vehicle Routing Problem With Cross-Docking, Aldy Gunawan, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Pieter Vansteenwegen, Vincent F. Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper studies the integration of the vehicle routing problem with cross-docking (VRPCD). The aim is to find a set of routes to deliver products from a set of suppliers to a set of customers through a cross-dock facility, such that the operational and transportation costs are minimized, without violating the vehicle capacity and time horizon constraints. A two-phase matheuristic based on column generation is proposed. The first phase focuses on generating a set of feasible candidate routes in both pickup and delivery processes by implementing an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm. A set of destroy and repair operators are …
