An Indigenous Commentary On The Globalisation Of Restorative Justice, Juan M. Tauri

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

The study and impact of the globalisation of crime control policy and related products have recently begun to receive significant attention from critical Indigenous scholars. The reasons for the increasing focus on this issue include the restorative justice industry's increasing utilisation of so-called 'Indigenous' philosophies and practices in the design of its various products; and the increasing global popularity of supposedly 'Indigenousinspired1 restorative justice initiatives, not only in settler colonial contexts, but throughout Western jurisdictions, as a response to crime control issues relating to minorities. The purpose of this paper is to provide an Indigenous critique of the globalisation of …

Globalisation: Before And After The Crisis, Sharon Beder

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

So-called »free« markets are becoming the new organising principle for the global order. The idea that governments should protect citizens against the excesses of free enterprise has been replaced with the idea that government should protect business activities against the excesses of democratic regulation. What business leaders seek, and to a large extent have achieved, are »business-managed democracies«, that is, democracies where the politics and cultural life of nations are managed in the interests of business.

Globalisation And Enterprise Culture In Developing Economies: A Preliminary Assessment, Roshni Narendran

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

The global environment has been susceptible to changes for centuries. In recent years, the process which have moved the world towards "global interdependence and exchange' have been known as globalisation (Mazuri, 2002). Globalisation led to changes in the social and economic environment, and in both developed and developing countries experienced opportunities for economic growth. This was an uneven process but provided opportunities for new entrepreneurial activities. According to Schumpeter (1934), entrepreneurial activities are the result of combinations from discovering new markets, new raw materials, new suppliers and new production methods. These entrepreneurial activities would enable opportunities to be exploited and …

Neoliberal Globalisation And Women's Experience Of Forced Migrations In Asia, Ruchira Ganguly-Scrase, Gillian J. Vogl, Roberta Julian

The world is now characterised by extensive and rapid movements of people. An increasingly important issue for industrialised countries, such as Australia, is the rising number of people who are becoming displaced within their homelands as a result of a multitude of interconnected factors. The majority of displaced persons and refugees in our region are women and children. Yet, they are severely underrepresented in refugee determination processes, claims for asylum and settlement. This paper will examine women's experiences of forced migration and the nee-liberal global context in which they occur. Over the past two decades the implementation of neoliberal policies …

Globalisation, Liberalisation And The Transformation Of Women's Work In India, Ruchira Ganguly-Scrase, Diane Vandenbroek

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Globalisation has set in motion large-scale population movements that render meaningless distinct categories of displacements. Yet, in recent years nation states have increasingly emphasized the distinction between ‘economic’ migrants and political refugees. This paper interrogates the overlapping processes of cross -border and internal displacements in postcolonial states. In particular, I argue that gendered complexities of internal and international displacement require urgent attention. Based on recent and ongoing ethnographic research among poverty induced internally displaced women in India and cross-border forced migrants, this paper considers the context of their experiences. Focusing on some of the shared spaces of ‘economic’ and ‘political’ …

Globalisation, Federalism And Legal Pluralism: The Challenges Of Diverse Legal Cultures In Federal Systems, J. M. Marychurch

Faculty of Law - Papers (Archive)

Australia has recently had to address the structure of corporate law and regulation as a result of decisions in two High Court cases, namely Re Wakim; Ex Parte McNally (1999) 198 CLR 511 and R v Hughes (2000) 171 ALR 155. The constitutional problems posed by these two cases have currently been resolved using a referral of powers by the states to the Commonwealth. However, this agreement was not reached without difficulty, and uncertainty persists due to a five year sunset clause. The intense debate surrounding these events shed light on the continuing diversity in political and legal culture in …
